    With the water low and then refilling, they are looking for a larger body of water. I think when you lower the water level, it indicates the dry season and when you start to fill the tank again, the splashing indicates water coming from a larger body of water and they want to to get to that larger body of water. You may be able to stop the jumping by using something to diffuse the water stream. Maybe try running the water through a collander or run a hose along the bottom of the tank to eliminate the splashing.

    @slay4558 4 года назад +31

    Why don't u put a extension on the pipe so it goes lower down the tank and try filling it with no bubbles to see if they jump or not

    • @curtisframsey
      @curtisframsey 4 года назад

      I agree, putting on an extension so it is below the water line the entire time the water change is happening should help.

    I've been keeping different wolf fish for over 15 years. Erythrinus are probably the most active. I've had 2 in separate tanks next to eachother and they both differ drastically from eachother. One is very active and aggressive. The other more passive. Both although love jumping. Any surface agitation from my power head makes them go crazy. They slam my lids like little rockets. Sometimes waking me up at night. By far one of my favorites. Out of the 4 species I have now. And you don't need a 200 gallon tank to house them

    • @timothyhunt1267
      @timothyhunt1267 Год назад

      @@revelation8974 13in is big for a hoplerythrinus Uni. Any wolf at that size can break a glass tank. Size wise I'd be more worried about and Aimara or a malabaricus.

    They are probably just jumping due to sudden environmental changes since they actually live in areas that don't have fast moving water currents(creeks and swamps to be exact),so they could possibly think that the water splashing down is a rapid, giving them the urge to find a new place to rest,and they also have specific pH level requirements as well.

  • @gjorgjinikushev3443
    @gjorgjinikushev3443 Год назад

    The instinct drives them to jump and change the pool of water when it's a heavy rain, they know the surface will be wet enough for them to jump from pond to pond or the larger body of water when it's raining more

    Put a longer tip on your water pipe going into the tank with one of your bottom drain fixtures so the fish can't get into it and I will prevent all that splashing and that might help them not trying to jump out just try it never hurts to try something

  • @horrorgamer6687

    It very much does seem like they want to be up river. Natural instinct when it floods is not to be washed away in most creatures even us so that would be my guess. But thats a guess....where they were collected did it flood a lot and would the parents have to work at staying in an area during flood? lots of things to consider. Great video Kevin.

  • @Bigredguy17
    @Bigredguy17 4 года назад +3

    Hi @ stingray biology love seeing your content. I'm thinking you can just add an extra peice of PVC to the outlet to add the water into the water rather than at the surface and see if they still jump. If not you'll know its the splashing rather than the water lvl rise causeing the jumping. I think its a migration instict.

    I would say that as the amazon floods and recedes leaving pools that these fish get trapped in. they have to jump to new water sources for oxygen/food and to not dry out with the pool. I don't think putting longer pipe in will change this. I would trickle it in very slowly.

    Its an migration response to the lower water level. Some people might even say its a response to the rain after a dry season. Filling the tank up below the water level might solve the problem. Greeting from the netherlands.😁

    Maybe when it rains where they are from, the rain knocks the insects down close to the water and they jump to get them.

  • @mirkon8926

    Has nothing to do with panic or flight reactions. The wolf fish can breath oxygen and is known for going from mud puddle to mud puddle to survive and migrate between bodies of water.

    Most predator fish eat these small fish. The way some predator fish eat them is to create lots of air bubbles around the school of small fish to confuse them. Then the predator opens it’s mouth and it’s easier for the predator fish to eat the prey.

    Just a suggestion but I'd put a peice of PVC onto the 90, long enough to stop the splashing when you do water changes. That is very interesting behavior, i believe your right about them swimming of waterfalls.

  • @isaacjose016
    @isaacjose016 4 года назад

    I used to go fishing for wolf fish in Panama, and they love to jump outside the water to eat the lures

  • @rcrow2011
    @rcrow2011 4 года назад

    This is natural instinct showing migration behavior. You adding water in the manner you are replicates a stream or waterfall which is a way out of their current situation.
    Add an extension hose to your water outlet so that water enters their tank from below them...on the bottom of the tank. And yes they will injure themselves if you continue with everything the way it is 👍
    Aren't Wolf fish a invasive species?
