Long Island Fish Guy just got one yesterday. He is 4-5 inches long but I’m having trouble feeding him he’s not taking what I’m giving him (small chunks of tilapia) any advice? Thanks.
I don’t and probably won’t ever own a red wolf fish and I still enjoyed the entire video. Info packed and editing was on point Anthony 👌 keep it up man!
i have one for a few months now.he is a nippy little fella and today i have a new snakehead(occelated snakehead)for my other tank.i love this kinda fish to keep.they are such a smart fish.
Very cool. I have always wanted an arowana, but doubt I'd ever actually get one. Then I wanted a dwarf snakehead, but they are illegal. lol. So honestly, this dude looks like a pretty good substitute? Thank you so much.
No i have both i only have them for a week.. they havent fought yet.. u know how when u go to a Fishstore and u see a steal? And ur IQ just goes out the window and buy.. lol.. i got both for 100.. the black is actually more timid than the gold.
@@LongIslandFishGuy Thanks man. I am thinking about getting one of those. Could you tell me how fast they grow? Can I put a small one (8cm) into a 120cm long tank and move him into a 3m aquarium in a few month?
Mason Atkinson They grow pretty quickly if you feed them regularly! Probably about an inch per month until they reach about 6ish inches. He should be fine in that size aquarium. Plenty of room!
PixelGun3d Slayer They’re a seasonal fish, so they’ll pop up every so often. Don’t quote me on this, but in the US, I believe “in season” is February/March for these guys.
How do you think they’d do with bichirs? I have an ornate and a endilcheri and I’ve always wanted to add a wolf fish I was always mislead on their behavior ☹️
I would suggest not doing this. Also, both of those fish require a tank much larger than 55 gallons. Unless that is a grow out tank, you’re going to run into some issues in a few months.
I would not suggest that. I know a few people have unsuccessfully tried. I don’t think it’s possible to have multiple Wolf Fish of this species in a single tank
I have two red wolf fish in a 75 gallon. I have had them for 4 months now. They were 3" when they came in and they are now 6" I had 3 to start with but removed one to its own tank due to fighting. These guys can do allot of damage to each other in a short amount of time. The two that are together are different enough looking that I am hoping for a pair. No info on these breeding in captivity. The two I have together get along with only a few skirmishes breaking out once in awhile. If I was to guess its the male that is the dominant one. The differences between the two are very noticeable with one having much longer fins and much more brightly colored. Could be a dominance thong but I am hoping its an opposite sex thing. They are awesome fish.
as they age and get bigger their colors will come in more. Mine have allot of gold orange reds and blues it it. The blue colors seem to come in later as they age
Getting one in the mail tommorow. Hes gonna be in a planted 150. Heavily planted. Its a community tetra tank or was and i cant get all the fish out. Are a few hoplo catfish okay ?
Do you run a HOB filter? I want to add more floating plants for my new wolf, but my HOB just destroys them. Was wondering what your secret is because your floating plants seem to thrive.
I do and you’re 100% right. Depending on the type of floating plants you have and the type of HOB you’re using, you may have an issue with floating plants. There’s really no fix to it in my opinion other than maybe moving the filter in a different location on the tank to see if it changes the trajectory of the flow. Hope this helps!
I got a red wolf fish a week ago, all it's doing is hide... It only ate once since I got it, which was a piece of store bought raw fish the first day I got it.... Never eaten since then... Should I be concerned??? When I throw food in, it stays away from it.... The store I got it from generally fed it live and frozen calamari, I wanna stay away from the live though
Try having the lights low or putting plenty of cover (plants) in the tank. Maybe he was only eating live when you got him? Try freeze dried krill or frozen shrimp. Good luck!
Im planning on getting one i have a 300Litre tank what is the best plants I can get for it and if I buy two has a pair can they exist with one another or is that a no go? Good video BTW
Beautiful wolf!! I just ordered one online with the plan of keeping it solo in a 29, do you think it could go in a 55 with belly crawler pike and a Senegal bichir around 12”?
Every fish is different. I’m currently having success with my Red Wolf in a 40B with similar sized cichlids, Bichirs, and Plecos. With these fish, I’ve heard of some being extremely territorial and aggressive, when others are more community like. Unfortunately, it’s moreso trial and error! But the Red Wolf Fish is an AWESOME fish!
@@LongIslandFishGuy Thanks for the info! Mine arrived yesterday at 3” and it’s already banging the glass trying to get my 5” endi in a grow out tank next to it, I’m thinking I’ll stick with keeping it solos
are these guys ok with high ph like 9.5+ long as it's stable? I want one so bad but because it's getting a bIg tank for sure I can't use Rodi. Far as the tank goes I want to do a tank about 24" high but only fill it up to around 18" so I can have a lot of floating plants i'm thinking Water Hyacinth Duckweed and Najas guadalupensis, for substrate i'm thinking a thin layer of pool filter sand or red flint, And drift wood for cover would be ok? also Do i need low flow or can i use a canister or sump filter? and do i need a heater guard if so I was thinking I could put the heater and the intake for whatever filter i use behind a big matten filter, and are there any meds that i shouldn't use with them?
I can’t comment on that type of pH but that is extremely high. I would suggest not putting most fish other than African lake fish in an aquarium like that.
@@LongIslandFishGuy and i have done that with N. multifasciatusI I more or less have lake tanganyika water out of my tap because my well water has a lot of dissolved calcium..
I work for a aquatic company in the uk, we ordered 10 of these guys in and I had to take one home! By far the most nasty fish I have ever kept! He even eats pest snails around the tank.
Hooked Aquatics Maidenhead aquatics Winnersh, if you go into any Maidenhead aquatics they can do personal orders. Can take a while though, they might not be available or the store might not need to do a order at that point in time.

R. L. Give him time - Not uncommon for ANY new fish not to eat right away. Red Wolf Fish are moody. Give him a few days.
Long Island Fish Guy thanks a lot man, do these guys grow fast?
R. L. Depends on how much you feed them. If you feed them a lot, then they’ll grow very fast
How big can the red spotted wolffish get?

Wild Fish Tanks Thanks Ryan! If you ever change your mind, you know who to talk to 😄👌🏼

In Brazil we call the big wolf fish "traíra" and this one is called "jejum"
mtrmmaximus That’s pretty dope! Send some to me! 😂
In Trinidad we call them wabeen

Could I possibly keep them with vampire shrimp?
Is I possible? Maybe. Likely? No. I wouldn’t suggest trying it.
I have a 3.5” gold wolf and a 3” black wolf in a 30g.. idk why i did it.. 🤷🏻♂️
Oof I’m assuming you only have a Black Wolf now?
No i have both i only have them for a week.. they havent fought yet.. u know how when u go to a Fishstore and u see a steal? And ur IQ just goes out the window and buy.. lol.. i got both for 100.. the black is actually more timid than the gold.
GH and KH recommendations?
I never monitor either of them so I’m unsure.
6-10 inches? Must be those camera angles, cause that little fella looked a whole lot bigger for some reason. Very informative. Thanks.
deadfred821 Red is the new black I guess 😅 Glad you enjoyed and thanks for watching! 👌🏼
Wolf fish are awesome
I have a 37 gallon planted tank, will they do fine with an African butterfly fish?
I would say so - As long as they are similar sizes
What floating plants do you recommend? What plants do you have in this tank?
I have Wisteria in this tank. Many people plant it but it can be used as a floating plant too
Do they eat bloodworms and other smaller insects?
Mason Atkinson Yes! 100%
@@LongIslandFishGuy Thanks man. I am thinking about getting one of those. Could you tell me how fast they grow? Can I put a small one (8cm) into a 120cm long tank and move him into a 3m aquarium in a few month?

Good info
How do you think a full sized red wolf or 2 would donin a gank with a smaller species bichir? 72 gal bowfront
Travis Snider Depends how much smaller the Bichir was, but probably not good. The 2 wolves probably wouldn’t get along either
Is it ok if there is no aerotors for red wolf fish? Im planning to buy one
Yes, it doesn’t not need one. It needs oxygen, but standard surface agitation that is on most tank is fine.
I’ve been looking tot buy one but I can’t fight one do you know where they sell then and can ship to the USA California

You can buy it here lots of them aquaristsacrosscanada.com/collections/new-arrivals/products/golden-wolf-fish-hoplerythrinus-unitaeniatus
Aqua imports has them in now, wet spot tropical fish sometimes has them.
In Guyana we call the big wolf fish hurei and the small ones like your yahrow idk if I spell those names correctly lol
That’s actually really cool! Thank you for sharing that!

How much does this fish cost and where can I find it online or a store I’m from ny and looking for it 🙏🏾
