  • So this was an interesting project. Don't call it useless just yet as there may be a lot of different designs to try and techniques. I really like those super high music box like notes, and if you could actually get your hand over to those super high frets properly, you could stretch some pretty crazy intervals on chords. Just think about it, we've experimented beyond both sides of the piano now!
*last minute edit: In the demo, the guitar only has 38 frets. I forgot I took one out at the end for the final print thinking it's print easier.

no. Octave pedals let you raise/lower the pitch of the signal. So instead of going through this man’s hassle of restringing your guitar and setting it up for “alto” tuning, you just turn the octave pedal to +5 and bam. You’re there.

Amazing, how many guitar nerds are out there. Awesome video, which reminded me of my own tuning/ short scale experiments back in 2019: I bought a short scale and got into the idea of a soprano guitar tuned in EADGHE one octave over an standard tuning. Used the same 007 string. I managed to tune it once this high, but then after five minutes playing it snapped. I never got there again after several attempts, more sanding, graphite on the nuts (like a coal-miner, eh?), and a wayyyyyy slower tuning process (of about 1/4 tone per day when reaching Bb). Conclusion: The cut-offs on this "children's guitar" are a nightmare anyway, and the frets are too, but I ended up playing standard 42-9 with a tuning in HEADF#H, which is pretty awesome, with nice tension. Will go slinky cobalt with 10s too for that extra tension! If you want "soprano madness", just get yourself a soprano guitar with the appropriate scale length...
But thanx again for the video, the fret extension idea via 3D printer is brilliant!

You could keep the neck pickup by planning your new printed frets with holes above the magnets or lowering the pickup and creating a space on the underside of the printed frets. Maybe a little more work on the new high frets, but you could keep the pickup and possibly plan it so the fret piece connects/attaches to the pickup and holds it in place. You could even saw out the bottom of the guitar so you could play the new frets without reaching over. A lot of extra work, I'm sure, but thought I'd mention it. Amazing project that could inspire others to do something similar! Thanks for this! 😁👍

Have you thought about printing a fret board attachment with certain extra frets custom spaced for playing specifically written music that doesn't require any of the other frets?
Like a guitar fret board built to only play Black Sabbath's Iron Man.
Or higher octaves but not necessarily 39 frets worth? Hand pick and fine tune like frets 35, 37, and 31. Something like that so strumming wouldn't be so bad and rubbing on that plastic.
    COOL IDEA MAN!

Something to think about for WAAAAY in the deep end (high end?) is a lever system like you would see on a Hurdy Gurdy or Nyckelharpa. I bet there is a way to use levers to position thin metal arms to cover the utmost high frets for that high range. It would not be as agile as fingers, but it would allow hitting those ear splitting notes consistently.

As a teenager I used to tune my acoustics up a half step.....suited my 13 year old voice better and the extra tension really made that solid mahogany top resonate really well. Also hipshot makes excellent tuners. I have a set of open back locking hipshot tuners on my 3 main guitars (ones a 7 string with their extra 7th string tuner specifically an esp ltd sc207 with fishman fluence modern 7s and ones a schecter with a JB/59 set highly modified like all my guitars and the last set is on my Martin D10e Sitka top Sapele back an sides acoustic lol and they work great on it and are only a bit heavier feel wise than some open back Waverly tuners.)

I think thinner strings are the norm on new instruments because they're easier to play, particularly when the instrument is set up poorly. A high action isn't nearly as punishing with Billy Gibbons .007s as with SRV .013s. But if you find them flabby, tuning up a half step is cheaper than replacing them, so it happens a lot.

Thanks for the video, cool project. Ever seen a mandolin? I'd be tempted to take some cues from those in making a soprano guitar. Doubling the thinner string(s) should improve your weak signal a bit - or you could maybe get what you want with an active pre-amp. Personally I'd be tempted to go low tech though, and just double the top string (effectively making this a 5 string) or even the top 2 (giving you a 4 string tuning.) You'd need to redo the nut and I'm not sure how you'd get the bridge you're working to cooperate, but that's still probably less work than it would take to shorten the scale length more (since you'd really be fabricating a good deal of the instrument to get that.) Also you might try changing the tuning a little, thirds sound better on the high strings, so did you say A standard? ADGCEA? I'd try ADGCFA for a six string tuning, or DGCFAA with the top A doubled maybe. Anyway, very interesting to see and hear what you came up with.

Oh, after letting this one percolate for some hours, the obvious finally strikes me. An improvement you can make much easier than anything else I've mentioned (other than the minor tuning adjustment.) Scallop that printed fretboard! It should make it a bit easier to play up there, and since you're printing the thing instead of sculpting it by hand, it's no more work than just printing another one.

You should get a neck thru guitar and do the same thing. Except sand and contour the body so it can be played like the neck. You know Ron Thal? His use of a thimble to move the bridge closer to shorten scale length is genius. Great vid.

Soprano would be a violin, mandolin, etc...Using a cigar box guitar approach might be easier. My cigar box mando has four strings and a 13.875 scale length and a fretless fingerboard w/piezo mounted under the bridge. I liked your project, super cool.
