This is the first video in the "subcontrabass" series back in 2018 recorded with the finest of professional gear... a phone. We've advanced a lot since, experimenting with a 37" scale bass, 40" scale bass and plenty more. So be sure to check out the full and up-to-date playlist of subcontra goodness!!!

Man, those elevator cables look really good on a bass.
I have made that joke so many times but for once its actually true haha
Lmao
Technically, guitars are a baritone instrument. What we call "baritone" guitars are actually bass instruments and electric basses are in the contrabass register. You, sir, have made a sub-contrabass guitar.
Wowowow
Try tuning off the harmonic at the 12th fret . I ilked your sound .,I think it will be better when the strings break in ..
I mean Guitars can play in the Alto range
Baritone Saxophone basses can be played in the tenor range

Answer: It Contradjents
It's a contradjention...
Very Contradjenting

Damn that tuning is lower then my self-esteem

My self esteem is still lower lol

@@pinetree4600 LOL you might have lowered "That Guy's" self-esteem even lower by pointing out his mistake--perhaps as low as that tuning!
Slap bass on that must be either really easy or really hard, I honestly can't tell
Probably easier, I mean slapping is way easier on your e sting then it is on the g string so yea probably easier
probably harder. imagine muting that low c sharp
James de Jesus damn your right, sometimes I get mad at my e string for vibrating when I barely touched it.
Depends on what youre doing, that c# would be horible to double thumb on
But the meat of your A string would allow more volume on hammer ons.
But in my opinion id keep that bass in its case and pull it out as a party trick every now and then, not useful other wise, the sound freq. Is so low you can hear the actual waves which would conflict with the tempo of the song.
But thats just my opinion

Honey, have you ever heard of djent?
The world's largest pipe organ, the Midmer-Losh in the main hall at Boardwalk City Hall in New Jersey, has a 64 foot sub-bass stop called the Dulzian 64' with the largest and lowest pipe being a C0000. It vibrates at *8hz.* and is more felt than heard. The 12 pipes that make up the lower octave of this stop contain over 10,000 board feet of lumber; enough to build an ordinary dwelling! The organ was built between 1929-1931 and then fell into disrepair for several decades until a group was formed to head up restoration on it. The instrument has 455 ranks and more than 33,000 pipes total. It is now to the point of being playable on the front right and front left chambers, and sounds amazing even with just those 2 chambers functional. It's estimated full restoration will be completed by 2023. Just a little FYI...😁
Actually it’s a C-1. Not a C0000. C-1.
@@cobalt._.27 Yeah. What the hell.
@@cobalt._.27 Approval granted.
@@cobalt._.27 W Detroit. Also happy belated birthday.
Technically you can get 128' "resultant" sound (Tartini tone + artificial harmonics) with pipe combinations creating a c-2 on that organ.
Finally, a Bass that Elephants & Whales can appreciate!
I get the feeling my phone speaker doesn't do the sound justice
not really missing much. the fundamental is pretty weak
Tbh it sounded a lot better than I thought it would
That super low C# actually sounds good.
I can literally hear how angry it sounds, lol.
The C# almost sounds like some kind of war drum
Not enough bass
you know... It's just not deep enough...
Not quite THIQQ enough
Lol
go to davie 504 if you want bass xD
Needs more cowbell
You can tune the lower strings using their harmonics at the fifth and 12th frets they will resonate at their higher octave pitches making a more accurate tuning.
Meshuggah would love this! Previously they stole The Golden Gate Bridge suspension cable to create monstrous bass sound
Their bassist tunes up a half step
huge tip for tuning in low tuning on bass or even guitars:
use the 12th fret harmonic
5th fret harmonic (2 octaves up) is even better for B0 strings and under
octave higher
Ive been doing this for a while, thought i was the only one
Or just capo the twelfth
You'll get a more accurate tuning using the harmonic. If the 12th fret isn't perfectly placed, it could throw off the tuning if you're tuning based off of that fret.
I think it needs an octaver pedal
The background music is in 7/4.
Cool

AAAAAHHH NOOOOOOOOOO0OOOOO
It would probably sound really good live with 5' speakers and a 100000-watt amp
You need something like MTX Jackhammer for epic sound using this build
A 4x15 and a rotary subwoofer would probably work
Primus: “heavy breathing”
The adaptations you did were really cool. I think it sounds as you would expect. That is one sounding growl, really cool man!!!!
Morten from Kalium here. Fucking love it, man. I have one of our 40" scale Quake basses on the way, and even then I am only going drop F. You made it sound good, especially considering it's a standard scale bass and everything, great job!
MF Kitten where can I see that 40 in scale in action?
Blake Vickrey I'll make a video when I get mine :)
I'm interested in getting some of your thickest strings to make a low end lap steel. Anywhere I can contact you?
THATS A CUSS WORD
FINALLY a guitar that sounds like a fart
Chad Mojito more like an autotuned queef.
it is a drum bro...
The fabled 'brown' note!
I suggest a change in diet if your farts are rumbling this heavy.
Not a guitar...
You hit it out of the ballpark you went down the rabbit hole but you came back out. I'm impressed it worked. Keep ☝ up the good work.
I had to do this in the band Gohma. It was in a drop double G sharp tuning. We had to use huge gauge piano wires on the bass. It sounded HUGE with the guitar but by itself it was really hard to tell what note it was playing on the E
Isn't Gohma a boss in the first Zelda?
I'VE GOT BLISTERS ON ME FINGERS!
Andrew Brooks heltker skelter!!!
nigga the drummer said that( ringo ) not the bassist ( john for that specific song )
Boon
These strings are thicker than ringo’s drumsticks you sick bum.
I’VE GOT NO MORE FINGERS!
I remember getting a blister on my finger :”) It was fun.........
Tune using the 12th fret or 5th fret harmonic.
oh ya, duh! using the 12th and 24th fret seems to give me an accurate intonation and tuning for the 0th fret, thanks! Do you tune super low too?
I have an 8 string guitar that I tune the bottom strings to bass E/A/D. I use guitar tuners, which sometimes cut the lower frequencies so I usually use the 12th fret harmonic. BTW, thanks for doing this video, I was kind of curious what a sub contra bass actually would sound like tonally, hard to find clean recordings.
also true, i did read about that, tuning by ear/feel with the octave note and checking 12th and 24th frets seem to work for me
Harmonics on guitars and basses are not actually perfectly intonated.
Brad Oliver but they're pretty damn close... Especially when your instrument go through a set up
dude I love this! I'm a tuba player and the pedal range of a tuba goes just as low as this sometimes even lower! Keep making videos I love watching, have a good day.
Absolutely intense goosebumps for the first time in my life. I’m in love with that sound
Very impressive but wh...oh wait
mario1997281 yeah wrong chanel (i gues not even close😂)
But does it djent

😂😂😂
😂😂😂
that poor bass neck
sub kilohertz oscillations It would have the same tension as a standard set.
you're right! I was always under the impression that the lower strings had at least a little more tension. It sure looks painful though.
The tension kinda evens out with the lower pitch. If you tried tuning to standard with a set this thick, then you would have a folding bass guitar 😂
sub kilohertz oscillations : I liked this comment to make it 100 👍
sub kilohertz oscillations fun fact, the higher strings put the most stress on the neck
4:40 - Perfectly heard, and not too much *at all* I *love* how the 0 octave notes sound, and it's really bad stock instruments don't normally cover that *thunder beautiful* range.
When tuning outside the range of the tuner, use harmonics of the octave (12th fret, 5th fret, just past the 2nd) don't use any others as they will be out of tune with 12TET. The string will also vibrate less than the full length of the string, so it may be a little sharp when plucked, unless you get a longer scale length or thicker gauge.
Listening on good headphones, anything below E0 is pointless really, there aren't many loudspeakers/headphones that will produce the fundamental, most speakers stop at 50hz unless it's a subwoofer.
Everyone on their phones won't hear any fundamental frequency played on any fret of that bass.
E0 is the functional limit, but bass amps don't really go below E1. So you would need a very expensive rig to even hear it AND be in a huge room where the longest dimension is at least 17m, 20m for C#0, 22m for C0.
Just because you don't hear the fundamental doesn't mean you don't hear the overtones, though. Tons of electromic music uses notes sub10hz and high passed, because the overtones start sounding very strange, unique, and fun!
@@JT-hs6hc have you ever heard of the forever rising tone? or combination tones?
yeah, really interesting stuff, but useless for tuning
listen to periphery hell below and tell me it's pointless. hmm what is overtones
Now play it back pitched back up an octave or two
Can't believe I haven't thought to try that yet
I just recorded a bit of the video into audacity and pitch shifted it an octave. The notes are more clear, but it sounds pretty weird and warbly. Although I bet part of the problem is probably from recording off of youtube.
Oh hey bud, cool seeing you here
Could you please also distort it?
Albin9000 , Satan will emerge then.
(Alternative to does it djent) But does it jazz?
Ever heard of Jazz Metal?
Does it djazz?
*Djass
Jake Jones don't... don't explain the joke
does it comp?
Brutal man, I can dig it, having something like that is unique, not sure how I would use it in a mix as often any bass below 70 hz is often cut to make room for a kick drum and also to avoid mixes that resonate too low in car speakers but its a nice tone and the upper harmonics could be enough to make it worthwhile. I would love to see this used in the context of a mix.
I love how its so low frequency you can hear each individual vibration in real time.
Imagine what Les Claypool would do with that
My first thought
He would probably play it
I can imagine a gnarly "Shake Hands with Beef."
Make my eardrums cum
that's the song I play when I feel like a slappadappawubdub
Y’all here acting like $30 strings are expensive when violin strings are like $110 a piece for good full size ones.
Violin strings are cheap compared to cello strings, those go for well over $110 for "decent" non gut strings
Just waiting for the pompous contrabass player who will tell us how much more expensive strings on those things are than cello strings.
ImMoral * oh fuck... I was just about to rant about my double bass strings
Awe princess, did you think your strings were expensive? Try being a drummer.
@@flacidhouse350 Yeah man every time we go to the store my drummer buys new strings! Don't know where he gets that kinda cash. For his strings. His drum strings.
Sounds really good, and better than I expected!
It just scratches a itch in my brain, love it
Listened to it wearing headphones, felt like the fluid in my eyeballs was vibrating. Nicely done!!
It's people like you that make the music world go forward. Congrats. A great idea and good job making it.
That's crazy awesome Youngblood, you got talent, keep on with your good work.
Wow great job. Your curiosity and skill make for a really fun experiment.
I'll give you an "A" for effort! You proved the theory, you just need maybe another three or more inches of scale length to find that proper "Speaking" length for the lowest strings.
Kellan Meig'h And by adding length the strings won't need to be as thick, and possibly be able to go even lower consequently.
Maybe an upright omnibass (a frett upright).
You could get a rotary subwoofer for your extreemely low needs. (It looks like a fan... with actuating blades)
They can go down to 1 hz. And yes. You DO feel that shit.
Edit: actually im very suprized that it doesnt destroy buildings. Cus it is very powerful.
I forgot about those, those do sound sick, I've got a "subpac" strapped to the back of my chair that let's my feel frequencies that low
The low frequency itself is not enough to destroy a building. There should also be the energy of sound i.e. amplitude. And your body will feed bad far before than building will do. A really big energy is needed to make a building collapse using sound.
@@DiamondSane As far as I learned at school, and college, it's actually a very specific frequency which can destroy things. It's the "characteristic frequency". It depends on the volume of the building, the materials and all those things. But when you can hit the exact frequency, and you keep on hitting that frequency long enough, then eventually it might destroy something. That was what happened to the Tacoma Bridge. The wind was swung due to the wind, but the wind caught the exact frequency, and kept on hitting that frequency for a few hours until the bridge eventually fell apart :)
Don't want to be annoying or nerdy, and sorry if I am :/
@@fabianvanderelst9643 Ok, it's obvious that Bridge fell down, but it does not prove that you can destroy building with a subwoofer. All bodies may vibrate, and there is a main frequency in their vibrations. But I do not find it possible to claim that the energy being transfered will be accumulated until building falls.
It's also clear that powerful enough sound will destroy bulding regardless of frequency. However I suppose the amlitude eeded will make the sound turn to shock wave.
My point is that the power is not enough, dissipation is big.
Thx
@@DiamondSane aha okay! I think I gotcha wrong then, my bad. :/ thanks for replying, and thanks for clarifying! Have a nice day! 😊
Worked surprisingly well!
Man, you are a genius! I love the way you think.
This really makes me want a contrabass guitar. Sounds like something I’d love to try.
Yeah I'm digging it alot on a fretless board too think it be smooth
fretless too, so the low strings play better
Impressed by how you modified that guitar. Cool video
Well done test, glad I came across this
Finally the tuning for all Korn songs
Check out quake bass guitars. The longer scale on those bass guitars will make this tuning sound damn clear and such.
also Dingwall. No Idea about the price tag of such a Special order but he has done one specifically for E0 I think
I have an NG2 and have trouble with drop G. GCGCF. The G is just too thick. The rest sounds good. But even with a balanced set, the jump in thickness Fri m the C to the higher G has a big time difference. The low G is redic tho. Playing 16th notes it rattles like crazy even with strings over .160 :/
Me thinks me might have to rethink this setup.
Hey man, you can tune instruments this low using the 12th fret harmonic instead of the open string
Christian Noir
_WAY_ TOO *T H I C C*
Christian Noir You might try fixing up intonation or the nut. I play in F#/Drop E with my Dingwall NG-2 and the clarity is unmatched from my other basses I used to use for that tuning.
Thank you so much for doing this
This made me happy.
Thank you!
Bro I love how you modify your 5 string bass guitar so cool!
Wow.... Is that C#0 the brown note?! **checks pants** Nope, not quite low enough. LOL

It's actually between 5 and 9 Hz and has been credibly demonstrated at Cranfield University.
your low string sounds like a helicopter

Use it for drone. Give it to Sunn o)))
Those are some T H I C C strings
Quick tip: solder is primarily tin, which is really soft. It's made for bonding a circuit path, or at most a stained glass window frame.
Experimenters; if you want to unwind your STEEL strings you may want to use a STEEL tack weld to hold the windings under tension. My local Batteries & Bulbs shop had no problem tack welding my windings
What a hero. Sounds how I hoped it would.
Sounds better than I expected.
Has djent come too far?
No, just whoever originally decided to use that word to name a subgenre of metal.
Wonder what would happen if you had an extra long scale length for this. Double basses have almost a 44 inch length. Tune to C0, and can you really djent?
Sounds great man
This genuinely sounds great and should be used.

Also, with tuning really low notes, I have an F# bass thanks to drop zone strings, and I hit a 12th fret harmonic, then tune.

Just.....sick. love it.
Those soundgear basses are perfect for such experiments lol, done the same years ago with the 4string version of this and warwick darklord strings, of course the thickest was 175. After all these experiments ended up with standart 5string sets (135) and just using a pitch shifter for downtuning digitally, it has more clarity and sustain, than these thickest strings.
I play super low tunings on bass - a tuner will pick it up better if you use the 12th fret harmonic to tune.
Ha, sounds better than I thought it would. Pretty cool. I guess the toughest part is figuring out how to keep the low guy there from rattling against the frets. A valiant effort!
Fantastic. I'd love to hear these super deep sounds played in songs.
That sounded pretty good.
I would like to hear it distorted :)
I've always loved the way guitars sound with the super low and distorted tunes, its just really hard to find any artists that use it without the incoherent screaming.

This is pretty insane. Great job! I guess the next step would be to talk about amp and speaker rigs that could do those low pitches justice.
Why the hell isn't this guy famous already ?
Holy shit its that guy who tuned his bass really low!!!!!!!
Tzeentch because he takes his time to do all of this which isnt really that easy? plus, there are people like me who do not have the time to experiment such tunings like these, but enjoy other people who do it. that's why.

it actually sounds remarkably good
Low F sharp is kinda usefull string for me. It sounds nice. A little bit of overdrive, and low f sharp shines.
6 string basses should just add a low f sharp instead of going higher
I think that 7 string bass is the way to go if you want low f sharp along with high C, if higher notes from C or lower from f sharp string are not needed then six string. But for now five string with low B is fine for me.
