To be fair the title is we try to learn double bass in an hour, and you can see first hand how far they got. It's not like they were masters after that hour, and they have musical education
Her- Sometimes we forget to play Me, a bassist: The amount of times I have slept on my bass during orchestra bc the other sections can’t play their parts and spend 90% of the class working on their parts is...too high
lol. Flutes are kind of the same. I once spent an entire practice listening to the other instruments attempt to play their parts. However, we’re sadly in the front, so we can’t sleep.
so in my seventh grade orchestra (the place I started learning bass), I was the only bass, so when my teacher would guide me through the bass part, everyone would just stare at me. Multiple times throughout the year, I'd hear some random violin say "bass looks so easy" and then turn around and see them turning their head away trying not to look like they'd said anything. I take a lot of pleasure in seeing these violinists suffer.
Actually Brett already knows a little bit of guitar. He mentioned it in this video : "The SEXIEST Musical Instrument?" m.ruclips.net/video/8Josw3ZDnf0/видео.html (at 2:05).

Finally, muster enough courage to watch this episode at the end of 2021. Just want to say thank you to Twoset and Phoebe, this video means so much to me as an ex-bassist. I have learnt the double bass for nearly a decade, but I remember I played really poorly. I don't have much strength, can't even hold the bow properly (I was doing the french bow). The music education I received was very exam-oriented so I was really bad at sight-reading and felt like I could only play the three pieces from the ABRSM and still played it badly. Also, I didn't practice enough, partly because I was lazy and also partly due to other factors in life. Even my teacher once suggested I should quit learning when I was preparing for my Grade 8 exam. I cried a lot and told her I wish to just stop it after I passed grade 8 because we have already spent so much time on it. I literally just passed the exam, still believed the examiner took pity on a little girl (I looked younger than my actual age)and just give me the pass when my playing didn't justify it. Then I never once touched my bass and it has been 8 years since. I thought it meant I didn't like double bass that much and it doesn't matter. And later I just locked away some of my memories...for example, If you asked me at the start of this year, I don't even remember how to read bass clef but can at least read treble and tenor clef given the time. However, I found your channel in the middle of this year and you guys bring me so much joy. Slowly but surely, I started to remember stuff related to double bass. The exam pieces I used to play, the beautiful harmonic sound when I go beyond 5th position, some funny stories when I was playing in the orchestra. And there's suddenly one day I realize I actually can read the bass clef, it just clicked in my head. And I have been tempted to start learning an instrument since I joined this community. I've always wanted to learn piano, and the tone of cello/flute is very lovely, but I realize if I am ever going to start playing any instrument again, I would still pick double bass. (But double teachers are so rare in where I live and I can't even find any double bass sheet music in music stores that are NOT syllabus of ABRSM LOL) I guess this means deep down I am still very fond of double bass and thank you for letting me make little peace with my past self. Back to the video, it was hilarious to see you guys now understand what it was like to play the bass! And even better when Phoebe just roasted you. I remembered the pain from playing but I don't remember I ever complained so much XD It is also funny to see Brett did a finger vibrato on the bass and Eddy whined about the pinky when you were not even pressing on the thickest string. Definitely give me a confidence boost when I think back to my experience of playing! Thank you so much. 2022 is approaching whilst I am typing this, once again thank you Brett and Eddy for the love and passion of classical music you shared with me and many others in the world. Wish you a happy new year from the bottom of my heart!

@@saint-cetacean Those basses are 5 string doubles basses which are tuned B, E, A, D, G, (same as an Electric 5 string bass), reason for that being is that the 5 string bass has more low end so it goes almost as low as a Piano goes.

As a bassist, it's nice seeing people struggle to lift up a surprisingly light instrument, not sure if it's because I play the french bass which doesnt have a B string so that may be the reason
As bassist this is really fun to watch. Honestly getting a good sound out of the double bass you need to have confidence in your bow strokes. Also I imagine your ribs wouldn't be screwed up if you learned to play in standing position like i did.

jriegger88 __ I play bass, and we actually have two bow types: German (as seen here) and French (think of a regular bow) I own a French bow, but German in my opinion is a lot more comfortable, convenient, and versatile.
WBABAS Same, my teacher uses the French bow so she just taught me and my other classmates how to use the French bow. I would like to learn how to use the German bow though it looks way more comfortable. When you play certain pieces do you use like different bows? My teacher said that she prefers the French because it can be used for both fast and slow pieces, she said the German bow is versatile for both but apparently harder to use when you play fast pieces compared to slower pieces. Is that true?
TwoSet: *holds the doublebass* Oh my god it's so heavy!!! Me: *a doublebassist for already 4 years* HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA weak
Lol I remember when I was teaching a 10 year old bass a couple months ago, and as soon as he picked it up he nearly dropped it! I had completely forgotten how unexpectedly heavy it was the first time I picked it up 🤣
Once you get the hang of how to produce a sound on the clarinet, which can be done in about 10 to 20 minutes (sure, not a full, rich sound, but a decent, recignizable one), it's actually not such a big step to playing simple pieces like 'Are you sleeping' or sth. Not with their musical background anyway. So I wouldn't wonder if after one hour of clarinet practice they can produce better results than on the double bass. The demanding thing on the bass is to have enough strength in your fingers to pull down the strings. If they don't touch the board, you are not able to produce any recognizable sound. Coming from violine myself (and being a carpenter on top, meaning I am used to lifting heavy weights), I couldn't practice for more than 5 minutes within one hour for the first weeks! It felt like risking a tendonitis. And that starts over and over again, once you had longer breaks. It's really not so much about technique in the beginning, but about strength.
@@missis_jo yea I'd argue the same, I haven't played in a while but used to play clarinet to quite a high level, it's relatively easy to produce notes and string together a sequence. Obviously the better you get the more complicated sounds and sequences you can play but within an hour you could definitely play some easy songs. It's one of the easier wind instruments and instruments in an orchestra overall imo.
the double bass is one of my favorite instruments of all time, and for a one hour practice session, i gotta say, eddy did it justice. as for brett...jury's still out. also how brett kept wanting to play while holding bow like a violin bow was hilarious

so in my seventh grade orchestra (the place I started learning bass), I was the only bass, so when my teacher would guide me through the bass part, everyone would just stare at me. @@benzenehydrocarbon Ah ha, I see, спасибо.

Why are there 5 strings
@@zori5086 there are basses with more than 4 strings, they are cool.
Only 4 you are still learning try 9
I'd love to see them try to play the clarinet. Even putting it together would be a challenge for them, since I doubt they play any wind instruments.
@@missis_jo after 10 to 20 min I doubt they can play any piece. Not to mention the weight on your right thumb.
