That’s due to the intonation being better. As you move up the neck, the intonation tends to shift out of tune. It’s part of having equal temperament. We just live with it and adjust it as best as we can but it’s still there.

Regarding playing it in your lap, the horn by the tailpiece is there to support it on your right leg, and if you sit with your left leg slightly higher the other horn by the neck fits right onto that leg.
Source: A mandolin player who isn't very good
Also, this thing sounds kind of amazing, it's a perfect hybrid between the mando and guitar sound. It doesn't just sound like a guitar tuned up an octave, it seems like the mandolin body shape gives it a lot of the characteristic timbre of the mandolin.

RUclips guitar channels are what convinced me to buy a guitar and actually try to learn. I've always been inspired by those guitarists and always wanted to learn, then life happened.
So, when I got into the guitar channels, they basically just fanned the flame that was still burning inside. 8 months later I have 2 guitars and 3 amps and still gaining more lol.
And I won't ever quit. I'm in it for life. 😎❤️🎸 I made that decision before I ever bought my first guitar, though. And I meant it. I won't ever quit. No matter if it takes 15 years to be able to play 1 song.

As a musician on a tight budget, I've always looked at the mando-guitar and dreamed from afar. I have played a couple and really enjoyed myself.
It, to me, feels like just a sort of extremization of the requinto guitar or guitarlele, which you know is tuned up a fourth rather than an octave, yet it may still have been an inspiration.
Also, as a mandolin player, I would love to play melody and countermelody with a mandolin and the mando-guitar.
Unfortunately, I'm also between mandolins right now, having given mine to a friend passionate about the instrument.
Anyway, I'm glad you did a video on this fantastic instrument, which is versatile and beautiful.

I play a lot of musical theater and pit orchestra gigs (before COVID), where guitarists are often asked to double on mandolin (and banjo, ukulele, kitchen sinks). This is perfect for that world, where having professional proficiency on all of those instruments is a pain in the ass. Thanks for this video- had no idea this existed.

Hot take: Mandolins are just a different tuning on a guitar. Just buy a mandolin and learn your scales and chords. It's an even better idea for guitarists to learn >1 tuning, and >1 string layout. Expand the brain.
For your Junior Player, consider the Yamaha Gitalele.

    • @codeman99-dev
      @codeman99-dev 3 года назад +2

I suspect this is significantly easier to play than a standard mandolin. Namely the string tension and how much the double strings just tear up your fingers.

Sweet! Gold Tone always has a B-stock list... I was looking at their Wood Song line until I discovered Bob Taylor, The Ebony Project, and the Andy Powers designed Academy Series. I'm now learning with an Academy 12, 12e, Breedlove Pursuit Concert E, and why not add a Ibanez AS73FM (and a Vox Mini3 G2 amp)? I'm guessing that Jr. has been to Thomann, for an early exposure to this world since you received many comments being seen walking through the store at 00:16 of another RUclips video .

Hitting weird chords is something I enjoy about soprano ukulele. I happen to have particularly large hands so I can hit the first fret on the first string and the last fret on the fourth string at the same time. Unfortunately, for the same reason doing actually useful chords on a soprano is a bit challenging.

Having just discovered this instrument, I am totally in love with the idea of it. I play guitalele all the time and had been looking for a steel string version, just for the difference in tone. This seems to fit the bill... I assume the scale length is somewhere around 17" . I really like that it's got aa mandolin shape. Definitely a character instrument.

i'm surprised at how nice that sounds. actually close to a mando sound but without the coursed strings. these things should be more common! would be a really nice way to round out an acoustic ensemble
