People can say what they want about "aggressive" music like this but music like this, songs like this are/were an outlet for kids who were abused and neglected and felt unseen. Korn, Linkin Park, and every artist who creates this dark music that touches on real shit... it makes those who feel unseen feel seen and heard. I'm not a big Korn fan, but this and a few other of their songs from this era got me through some dark moments.
There's a reason plants grow better with ambient metal playing compared to, say, country, which hurts there growth. Mythbusters did an episode about it.
Yep. Not everyone has healthy ways to get aggression out without it coming back to harm them. This music is that outlet.
Korn did that for me but Linkin Park did it so much better for me! Chester and Mike and them have saved my life so many times when I was going to end it! And that's why I will never look past someone who is going through that too! I will and have done my best to help people and always will!
Just the fact that they never were like, "We Understand" which to me was always someone saying shut up! They knew what we went through! They KNEW!!!!
One of the most powerful songs by Korn about abuse is called Daddy. It is really hard to listen to and ends up with Daivs breaking down sobbing on the mic.
JD and Korn was never shy about going down into the dark. Which helped a lot of abuse survivors.

Jonathan grew up in an abusive household. He wrote what he experienced. The video is the dream....that someone will hear you, that someone will save you....give you an escape. I know of which I speak. Daddy will break you, though.

I've showed my daughter some of this music lately and told her when I was her age this is what we listened to. This is what "my generation" was into, it spoke to us, or for us. And she dead pan looked at me and just asked "Who hurt you?". And I told her when I was growing up kids were meant to be seen not heard, don't speak unless spoken to, and lots of other stuff that I don't need to go into on here... But this kind of music came along and said what we were feeling, and we could release our feelings in a positive way and deal with the crushing world around us. It would free us from the pressures, the pain, the anger... and we could handle lifes hard hits.
I'm not personally of the same generation, but I was raised by my grandparents, so that's the same way it was for me. The weirdest thing for me was that none of my friends had to deal with it like that at home, but I did, and I didn't understand for a really long time what the difference was.
The lead singer Johnathan Davis had a dark and troubling growing up, and his music reflects it. If you're looking to see how awesome they are live watch "Blind" Live at Woodstock or watch "Got the life " or "Shoots and latter's " video. You probably enjoy those the most. Definitely more Korn. A lot of people focus on Korn from the 90s, but they’re actually still putting out some real bangers today. check out the last music video they dropped from their latest album. It’s called The worst is on it's way. you’ll see how much their sound has matured since the 90s.

A lot of Jonathan Davis' lyrics were from his pain... childhood trauma... adult vulnerability... 'Falling away from me' was no different. Some of KoRn's biggest tracks came from the depths of his exorcising the abuse he had suffered - 'Thoughtless' ... 'Alone I break ' ... 'Clown' ... etc.
After KoRn's success, Jonathan Davis became a father to sons Nathan (from his 1st marriage) ... Zeppelin Davis, Pirate Davis (from his 2nd marriage to late wife Deven) and he got full custody of his younger sons. He admits he's close to all his boys and doesn't want to repeat his parents' mistakes and blunders that cost Jonathan his childhood innocence.
It's a heavy subject, childhood abuse... But I had to recognize it first, because in my life, it was so bad that I can't remember years of my childhood because of the physical and mental abuse I suffered... My mom still denied that she was responsible for the trauma she inflicted on me and my brother. My dad was twice married and abandoned his 3 children to remarry; not the guy we all thought he was at all...
My ex-fiancee had her life ruined by incest, rape and sexual abuse as a minor and passed down that damage to her children and all her exes... Others flat-out deny the abuse and act like it was 'no big deal'... but I still see the trauma when they become hostile and often lose their tempers and minds.
Most people do not want to talk about it, and that is frustrating for those of us who seek to identify and correct that kind of behavior towards minors.
JD actually has a beautiful voice when he's just singing "normally" LOL. I love his tone and yes, he does have a unique voice for sure.

This song is 💯 about domestic abuse, and showing u that there are ways of getting out of it! Jonathan definitely has a way of making u feel all kinds of emotions with his lyrics and videos! Fun fact - Fred Durst directed this video!
I'm going to be turning 42 this year and this music still has an effect on my mental health. I'm going through repairing my childhood trauma and anytime I get stuck, songs like this are safe spaces to work through the anger and rage.
Jonathan Davis has lived through hell . The song Daddy made me cry hard . He even cries in it . They have so many deep songs . I can list them forever . I'm a big Korn fan. He releases his soul in every song .
Korn is the voice of the forgotten and forsaken, the abused and desperate. Much of their work is literally a release valve for these terrible emotions and helped so many of us survive terrible situations in our youth.

Korn is more about the emotions it evokes than crazy vocal range. Thoughtless and coming undone are some of my favortites.
KoRn got me through so much growing up. They are very therapeutic with their lyrics and Jonathan Davis's story is intense. His most emotional and disturbing song is called "Daddy" very few reactors can get through it because it talks of his childhood and sexual abuse. It's heart breaking. His whole story is a testament of being strong and overcoming your past. Definitely check out "Thoughtless" they also do a song with Ice Cube called "Children of the Korn" that song is awesome. Hope you jump down the Korn rabbit hole. It's a deep one if you're open minded
100%. It made me realize or other people out there found it hard to be bouncy and positive all the time and that I wasn't alone.
Here are a few KoRn songs that I think you would enjoy... Blind, Coming Undone, Never, Never, Rotting in Vein, got the life, shoots and ladders. There are some great tunes and I know people push for Daddy but it is a HARD and DARK song about sexual abuse and it is tough to listen to. This is my favorite band and I saw them perform that live and I was sobbing in the crowd and the song is one I skip a lot because it is so raw so do that one much later on. It is an important song but a very hard listen.

Korn helped a lot of people, and still do, because honestly they gave an escape to many. Another voice that was heard and said yeah I've been in it too. Much like Chester and Corey Taylor, Jonathan doesn't have a beautiful history, it's raw, it's ugly, and unfortunately too many of us can relate to things. *Coming Undone* , *Alone I Break* , *Got The Life* , and *Blind* are on my "Keep Fighting" playlist along with a couple I know you've already listened to.
I don't know if I missed it or if you haven't listened to it yet, but *Shoots & Ladders* is all kinds of awesome.
I think you nailed the interpretation. Physical and emotional abuse are horrible for children and young adults to go through, but this is about finding hope and refuge in the music and with others who have experienced getting beaten down.
Snuff is an emotionally heavy song, not a loud one. It's one of Slipknot's slowest and most melodic and beautiful sounding ones, it's about a one sided relationship that falls apart. The Cory Taylor live acoustic version is incredibly emotional. ruclips.net/video/QBK6xymmKHM/видео.html
I sent that song to somebody I thought I loved because the lyrics just hit, and they came back and acted like the victim.

KoRn is in the box initially. My take was always that she - like so many of us at that time - was finding her escape from the misery of her life in their music. Then they came out of the box as she went out the window to join the neighborhood kids. She found her support network like the fans of this kind of music have always found support within the group. Despite some of the stereotypes, the crowds at metal and numetal shows are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. The artists generally won't tolerate any less. David Draiman of Disturbed halted a concert mid-song once because a little girl in the audience got scared by the pyrotechnics
"Daddy" is probably the most gruesome song with his abuse.. its a hard listen but very emotional

korn is a whole vibe man, the first band i really got into as a 10 year old. i was born 1990. seen them many times. johnathan davis. as a vocalist is the voice to many that have been hurt. cheers man.

I was a Goth, Nu-Metal head back in those days. Now I'm on the flip side of you and enjoying finding out about hip-hop and rapping from back then and now.
I was Goth when Korn first come out as well.
I am still goth at heart. Just haven't had time in Years to actually goth out.
As a family man who works a public job, have to keep up the persona to make the status quo lol !
But I still love my gothic inspirations as well as bands like Korn !
@@TheOmegaRain I'm actually disabled now and in my early 40's. I'd still Goth out all day and night if it didn't cost an extreme amount to dress the way I did as I did in my teens and early 20s. Hot Topic is not even 'near' the 'real' Goth out we used to do. To even get a real whole upper bodied corset these days is well over $100+. So yeah, nope can't afford anything like that anymore but the music I'm still heavy into even though things like Cradle of Filth is not near my favorite band even tho as we both stated we're still Goth at heart. My top 3 bands are: "Queen, Korn, and then Slipknot. Right after them is Motionless in White, FFDP,, and then believe it or not Falling in Reverse. : )

Daddy is a masterpiece in courage. But I don't think you could handle it. But it saved lives. Talk about getting real. Daddy is probably the most real song you'll ever hear. Do the lyric video.

You were spot on with this one! This is a really heavy subject depicted in a really raw way and a lot of people get freaked out about it (I don't really blame them) and they won't even try to recognize the art in it, which I believe you can still do even if it's not your jam. But I'm happy you did!
Snuff by Slipknot is for sure heavy but it will surprise you how non heavy (as in heavy metal) the sound is especially for Slipknot. For people who've only heard a couple Slipknot songs it's hard to imagine it's even a Slipknot song.
And I'm sure you won't think Snuff is too much for you when you hear it. It's just a beautifully heartfelt song more than anything else.
I think people make Snuff sound weirder than it is. If you don't listen to the lyrics it's just a beautiful heartfelt song.
And even lyrically it is definitely not as brutal as Falling away from me.
And you handled this one great so you will have no problem with Snuff!

What you’re saying here at 6:11 is exactly spot on. The only way you can let out how you’re feeling is through the aggressive sounds made through the music. As an adult of child abuse, especially in the 90’s, bands like this helped us vent soooo much. Koяn is my fav band of all time because their lyrics were so relatable and if they weren’t, the sound was a nice expression.

It's all kinds of abuse mental, emotional, physical. The box represents a place to run away to. A safe place. The kids coming to the aid and getting away from the abuse.
As a child of abuse, married to a child of a different type of abuse (me physical, her cult isolation), I've got to say, I'm thankful you didn't go through it.
Some scars can't be hidden by clothes and they are way harder to overcome. I have flashbacks and core memories around it. She never fully liberated herself. We spent years abusing each other, but thankfully that's over.
It's rough.
Fun fact but Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit directed the music video ! That and many other videos (including his own LP videos). He's good friend with JD and they toured together at the time. He's truly underrated

Back in the 90s rock was a big part of pop music and it was directly putting forward the darkness, pain, and mental health issues that had been kind of pushed out of public awareness previously. The coolest bands were the ones who tapped into the aggression, tabboo sexuality and emotional sickness of humanity. Every generation thinks the music of their own youth was the best, but this stuff really connected with us 90s kids back in school

Music is always there when you need it. I know music has saved my life before. Music that nobody would expect like Korn, Coal Chamber, Cradle of Filth. They got me through some bad times. The right music can make you forget the pain for a while.
Korn is one of my favorite bands. In Freak, i believe its called scat. Love their vibe. A lot of neglected abused kids found an outlet in their music.❤
In 1998 I was lucky to see Korn with Metallica and Jonathan Davis played the bagpipes. It was incredible!!

As I understand Jonathan Davis’s story he went through a lot of abuse as a kid, and it pours out into his music in so many ways.

Yeah, Got the Life is great and Thoughtless is one of their best songs ever, if you get around to react to that one make sure you watch the remastered version with Aaron Paul.
This came out when I was 15/16, and I was in a brutal depression. I had dropped out of school, and just wanted to d*e. I used to watch this video crying along with the girl, just as hard. It was actually a form of relief to be able to cry/scream out my pain along with someone, even though they were fictional.

You hit the nail on the head. Im a survivior of childhood abuse, and this song speaks to my soul. It sounds like the pain we go through and the voices circling in our head in the aftermath of trauma. I love this song because it makes me feel seen and less alone. The trauma never leaves you. I'm 38 and despite all the therapy and healing I've done, I'm still brought to my knees from time to time from the pain that lingers.
You really need to watch some Korn live or unplugged. Hits you different! amazing band!

This song was liberating for me as a teenager
I love seeing your experience through korn and what they portray so beautifully. The angst, pain, sadness of the youth that grows through abusive environments. Songs like “got the life” displays the unique sound that Korn has and Jonathan’s vocals are pretty legit and dynamic through the song. Keep doing what you do man, it’s legit.

Korn was one of the first to really bring out a message like these that gave a lot of abused people an outlet. From the first when I found Korn I fell in love. They left an impact with me that I'll never forget.

Yeah agreed. This is my favourite Korn song. Very heavy, in both the music, the lyrics, and the feeling. But he wrote what he knew. This was something that a lot of people grew up experiencing and music like this helped as an outlet.

Man getting an album from korn, limp bizkit, or blink when you were 10 years old was hard. Parents full disapproval but still allowed it. Defiantly got a sandal to the butt l, and I sure was outta turn. But thank god, and praise to you that had to endure this.

I had good parents, I wasn't abused or anything, but still Korn spoke to me, tapped in the inner rage inside me, it was an outlet for me.
Their video for Twisted Transistor is great. Lil Jon, Snoop, Xibit, and David Banner play the band members abd the premise is hilarious.

I suffered sexual abuse from my father since I have memory. I remember myself when i was a teenager having that type of feelings, shouting inside myself, trying to not suffering any more, fighting with my own trying to keep going. Know I’m a 30 old woman accepting that this type of music keeps helping me to go on. Only people how suffer abuse can understand what I’m saying

This music (not specifically Korn but in general) helped me through so much physical and psychological abuse that I took growing up. I truly believe without the music of my youth, I wouldn't be here today. Angry music makes me happy now.
