I used to prefer audio work over video work because most videographers overlook good audio and I actually went to school for audio production. But I have really gotten into filming since college, so I do both now. I just started really getting into messing around with more sound effects on the newest episode of my vlog. Audio is just fun because the possibilities are endless when you start stacking different sounds and it really changes the whole feel of the composition.
I love Video work, but the sound design & score is where a project finds its soul!

Before shooting this video, he goes out and shoots all day with a friend, edits / designs sound / colors the example clip,, then shoots the sit down portion having the perfect sequences to reference. killing it

Do the math. say it is limited to 1 minute of footage, and say he gets 1% of his subscribers to submit a video. So 4,610 subscribers submit 1-minute videos. Peter now has to take 4,610 minutes or 3 days to watch all of them and that is without ZERO breaks, one continuous flow of videos.
David Niedbala of course he'd get a lot of submissions, he could just randomly select a few to look at.

I just bought my first Audio recorder this past week, so I'm pretty excited to get started to record and edit sounds. I know what you mean about video/images vs audio, but having been a bit starved to get quality audio of just what I wanted at the moment Audio is king (ha). It's just like anything else, you can go buy stuff off the shelf and it will work but may not be exactly what you want. The moment you are able to make the same thing yourself and get it just the way you like, you are liberated and in control. Always great timeless content ( from 5 years ago) ! Cheers Peter.

Can you give me the exact name of the two audio effects that you use at the end of the video please, I'me french so I may not understood the name of the slow motion effect and the other one for the transition
I feel like it doesn't end when you put the audio clip on the timeline. Do you need to "grade" the audio like you grade the footage to match? If I shoot 120p footage of a creek and pair it with normal creek sound, will it sound right or do I slow that down to? Great video, but just sprinkling audio clips on the timeline makes my video sound "gimmicky" Can anyone suggest and effects to play around with to help it sound more organic?

Peter, as a pro photographer who is shooting more and more video, you are my ‘go to’ for inspiration. I never paid much attention to the audio side of things apart from making sure I had great music or crisp sound for interviews - until now! Keep up the great work :)

The point of this video is spot on! Thanks for bringing it up. However, that said...
The B-roll audio broke my ears: conspicuous, grating high end, muddled mixing, wild dynamic range.
Just like video has adjustments for basic correction and color grading, so does audio. Effects such as EQ (equalization) and dynamic range compression (not file) and others are essential and fundamental to achieving truly seamless and transparent mixes. Adobe premiere has some of these manipulations in the effects panel. They are not necessarily simple, and do require study, practice, and an ear to master.
We harp on how using the wrong shutter speed or frame rate leads to "unprofessional" edits. (clears throat.) It's the same for audio.
(stares at shoes in shame for speaking)
I filmed a short horror lately and produced the music and did all natural foley and the kick I got out of doing the sound was something else. Using your own real sounds (foley) is so cool.

Hey Peter, If you try to push the sound design too far it can also take away from your video. I hate to admit it but I didn't like how you over emphasized the sound effects because it was way too distracting. If you leveled down all of the sounds then it would have worked in this video unless you were intentionally trying to make them stand out?
I'm not trying to be a hater because you are very talented and I would love to be able to produce videos half as good as yours.
+Trevor Adrian hey, everyone is entitled to their opinion! Art is subjective! I, disagree and think the levels are fine and are to my liking. If anything, being that audio is the focus of this video, there is inherently more scrutiny on it.

I went back home in shanghai on foot and recorded about 15 min on the road. When i was in the subway i listened to the stuff i got...and man, had to listen all the 15 min:D Love that quality and deep texture in recording. I would even say that Zoom H1 is a must have for any creator.
