One more element that could add even more is a 'breath' track. Hearing the protagonist breathing, you can tell a story there too. Him getting increasingly stressed, sighing, shortness of breath/quicker breathing, etc.
I think in the past I was too naïve to think editing is just the visual, but after seriously trying editing out, I realized the amount of time that sound design takes is crazy !
I dont understand, some of the people out there really put so much contents out like this video, but dont get enough credits, I just wanna say I thank you with deep down from my heart, you guys are such great people!
Wow 🤯🤯, One of the best tutorial videos I've seen on the internet in a long time . Someone has put a lot of effort into editing this video together. Props to him🥳. Can't wait for the next video like this.🤩🤩
Thanks so much for the kind words - you’re welcome! We have a full course on sound and music editing as well (www.filmeditingpro.com/join-the-art-of-music-editing-student-area)
🌟 Here is a summary. Thank me later, you got this! 🎨 Steps to Awesome Sound Design: 1. Score: • Importance: Even if a composer will score later, adding temp music helps design sound effects in context and communicate the vision. • Technique: Cut and rearrange music cues to match the visual edit. Use non-rhythmic orchestral music for easier editing. 2. Ambience and Foley: • Ambience: Every location needs ambient sound (e.g., air conditioner hum in an office, wind for outdoor shots). • Foley: Ensure every visible action has a corresponding sound (e.g., typing, pen strokes, footsteps). • Diversity: Avoid repetitive sounds by using varied sound clips and cutting longer clips into individual sounds. 3. Creative Sound Design: • Abstract Sounds: Use sound to communicate emotions, thoughts, and actions not visible on screen. • Non-literal Sounds: Add sounds for camera moves, transitions, and non-visible actions to enhance storytelling. • Experimentation: Use stock libraries and record custom sounds to fill specific needs. 🛠 Practical Examples: • Initial Pass Critique: • Issues: Misaligned score, lack of ambience, repetitive sound effects, lack of reverberation, and missed creative opportunities. • Solutions: Address each issue with targeted fixes in the refined version. • Refined Version: • Score: Adjust cues to match visual actions, such as a staple being pulled, and use simpler, ominous drones for background tension. • Ambience: Add relevant ambient sounds and adjust volumes to fit the scene. • Varied Sound Effects: Use clips with multiple keystrokes or pen sounds, cutting and aligning them with the visuals. • Reverb: Apply environmental reverb to Foley tracks to match the character’s environment. • Creative Enhancements: • Opening Credits: Add chimes and a drone to set the tone. • De-stapling Moment: Add reverse impacts to make it sinister. • Character Movements: Use whooshes for quick movements to reinforce the comedic nature. • Hits and Impact Sounds: Add hits to emphasize actions like placing a box on a desk. 🎧 Advanced Techniques: • Layering Sounds: Combine multiple sounds to create richer audio. • Consistent Style: Maintain a consistent sound style throughout the piece. • Identifying Key Moments: Recognize moments that need sound accenting and treat them appropriately. • Balancing Intensity: Not every moment needs maximum intensity; balance subtle and intense sounds for impact. 📝 Mixing and Final Touches: • Mixing Levels: Ensure dialogue, sound effects, and score are at appropriate levels (e.g., dialogue around -12 dB, sound effects -10 to -30 dB, score -22 to -30 dB). • Iterative Process: Sound design is iterative; refine and adjust in multiple passes for the best results. 🎬 Conclusion: • Foundations: Start with score, ambience, and Foley. • Creativity: Add layers and think outside the box for a sophisticated and interesting soundscape. • Consistency: Apply techniques consistently across different software platforms.
Hey Chris, How fabulous are ALL your videos and tutorials? AMAZING ! Even though I've been editing professionally for almost 40 years now, I still gather new information, insights and ideas from the videos you produce. Many thanks as always !
This is the first video I came across of yours, as I'm trying to piece together a proper showreel and I'm stunned at the fact all this information is here for free, just out here for anyone to watch. Truly educating!
There is something about this video that is special. The knowledge is great but also the speaker is endearing and welcoming. Also its clear you're an editor because of the quality of edits in this video. Well done. 10/10
To be honest I hate sound design but I have to learn it as an independent filmmaker and actor, and so far I've been bored watching a lot of tutorials. But your video is something else and it caught my attention. I like it. Congrats man for this amazing video and tutorial.
I'm really pleased with myself for having four of the same notes that you shared after the first pass! I guess I am indeed learning from your courses! 🙂
Probably the best sound design video on RUclips, simple and to the point. Really helped me improve and deliver the results I was after, honestly just using this video as 'feedback' will improve 99% of people watching this video. And what I mean by feedback, is watch your last video back and see if it ticks all or any of the boxes this dude mentions. If you tick them all then you shouldn't be watching this video :)
Chris, you are an absolute legend! I love the courses on your website. They are the most knowledgeable and complete out there. I am looking forward to the VFX course coming in Spring 2023. Sending a virtual hug from Milan, Italy.
Ive been working on a personal project and i came across this video while looking at ways to improve it. I applied these principles to my project and it has greatly improved it and has given it much more depth. Thank you! 🙏
I just discovered the channel today, & I've been binge watching the content since! One of the best channels on RUclips - & I've been watching RUclips since 05 -. I've learned a ton of info & I thank you for it.
So I’m filming (new RUclipsr) cooking videos and I absolutely love videos with the natural sounds and foley! Do you recommend I film the sounds with a mic while I am filming me cooking it or film the audio separate just focusing on the sounds and do foley. I’m not a professional obviously and wanted to ask you because you have worked as a sound designer. I use CapCut free for now and haven’t looked too much into what stock sound effects they have. Any tips would be super appreciated!
@@HealthierDAYBYTAY Hard to tell what you're asking for but if it's a mic recommendation, the Sennheiser MKH50 is a popular one for RUclipsrs. If you're looking for a library of sound effects, I hear that Soundly is a great way to go... it's a reasonably priced subscription service with a large library and great search interface. I have my own libary that I've been developing for 30 years but there's easier and faster ways to get there now. Good luck!
this is the only video where ive paused the video and voluntarily clicked the subscribe button. the production quality and the amount i learned in this relatively short video is insane
Probably the best cinematic editing channel out there! I've learnt SO MUCH!! Thank you guys, I'm making a career out of it thanks to this channel and your courses! The goal is to make a living soon!!!😍😍🔥
This video should be in paid subscription. It is very professional youtube video. This is so systematic, detailed , each and every thing is so well designed. I loved this video.. Thank you so much sir.
You guys rock! Having finished the Davinci Resolve course with Film Editing Pro, I'm really looking forward to doing MORE classes. Particularly the secrets of creative editing and down the road, the art of drama editing. Also, looking ahead at your VFX class coming up, maybe in a few years I'll be ready to do something fun like that!
As someone who has learned from and implemented both of those courses in two short film re-edits, I can't recommend them enough. They're outstanding. You'll be hard-pressed to find anything better than that. Secrets of Creative Editing is what IMO should precede Art of Drama Editing in terms of sequence because it acts as a base, the fundamentals. And then Drama Editing and other courses like Music Editing go in greater depth on each of those aspects of film editing.
Thank you soo much! In my country it's a massive bothersome to obtain a high quality educational materials even through online platforms. Your contribution helps new creators ALOT ! I hope you know your work is appreciated 🙏
I must say it's one of the most simplest though most useful video to understand sound design...Thankyou for making this video It has helped me to understand better dynamics of sound design.
The coolest tutorial I've ever seen ... Very professionally made and presented and leaves you with a whole new knowledge box opened in your brain through a simple but a deep illustration. Well done guys
Amazing Video!! Someone showing the actual process 'of editing sound design and the theory behind it' is hard to find out there.. For real this is very valuable stuff, Thanks.
I’ve to admit, I’ve been kinda binging the videos from the channel, also watched all three videos of trailer edit, I’m definitely liking the content as well as the teaching style from the trailer edit videos, I might purchase the course because I find those very interesting, thanks for the value bomb ❤

This is great! I'm trying to do cute dog skits with my dogs, and I know my sound is pretty awful. Most videos have just said, "add some music, slap some sound effects in there, not too many, go!" This is the first one to divide up and explain sound in a clear manner.

Absolutely love that idea - it could serve as a great audio motif and tension escalator.
something that Roger Waters used to good effect on a good number of tracks throughout his career
This is hands down one of the best videos in RUclips history
I am so happy I came across it.
I think in the past I was too naïve to think editing is just the visual, but after seriously trying editing out, I realized the amount of time that sound design takes is crazy !

The final video looks so simple but once you realise the work behind it!

Thanks for this tutorial. It covers "overall theory" that is sometimes lost when watching tutorials specific to one editing software suite.
