8:50 I would call such a game an "action puzzler": essentially, a puzzle game in which there is some time constraint by something happening without input so thinking fast is a requirement, contrasting a "calm puzzler" where you can (often) take as long as you need to think. And portal 2 would be a platformer-puzzler, which are often calm puzzlers. Question is if a calm puzzler with a timer mechanic would become an action puzzler, which I personally disagree with.
I'm surprised how some games I hated scored pretty high and others scored really low. It's fascinating to see how opinions can differ that much. Also, I never played Shell Soccer but it looks amazing! WHY DOES THIS MINIGAME NOT APPEAR IN THE MAIN MODE?
I never got why either! Maybe they thought it's too long or something? Even then they could just lower the number of goombas when the game gets picked in the main modes.
The issue with Roll Call isn't that it just counting. The issue with it is that you can see your opponents' count. That means you actually don't have to count, but copy your opponents score. And if everyone has the same score, everyone wins, removing the point of even trying. That's why Goomba Spotting is so much better of a counting minigame because you can't see anyone's score or even count backwards. And since the counting is reactionary, you not only have to be sure you count right, but also be sure to press the button a correct amount of times.
Your rant at 50:57 was pure genius. I am glad I am not the only one that ignores the lack of content in this game. I know people really praise this game for how the classic style of Mario Party has returned faithfully, but Nintendo's attempt at making like this game has a decent amount of content outside of the Party Mode by having varied minigame modes baffles me. A tournament minigame mode has been a staple throughout most of the games and just doing different minigame modes with slightly different objectives seems very tacky and is misleading to anyone who believes there's plenty of ways to play your favorite minigames in Mt. Minigames when really it is not. Between you and me, I feel like even Super Mario Party had more mode variation when it came to how you played minigames. While I do like Mario Party Superstars a lot, this game is not perfect like everyone says it is. I put over 140 hours in the game and that was mostly because the achievements were my main drive to play the game after I had my fill of playing the boards and Mt. Minigames since the lack of modes don't offer much for me. Now that I have completed pretty much all of the achievements, I am less motivated to come back to the game, even when I have friends that are available to join me. What would fix my complaints is definitely some extra content. Perhaps some more boards and more varied minigame modes.
THANK YOU. As someone who put in literal 400 hours into the game(I’m not kidding), Mt Minigame is without a doubt the worst mode out of any MP. It tries to look out extra content, but in reality it’s completely tacky, boring, and pretty soulless of it ask me. Sports and Puzzles is clearly the worst one as clarified by the amazing rant in the video, Tag Battle, and 2-v-2 match are Bascially the “tournament” mode, but not really that at all, and Coin Battle is the most disappointing mode of all. Superstars is by no means bad, but after putting so much hours into the game and noticing the lack of content, I think the game is just okay in retrospective; definitely better than the modern MP before this, but saying it’s better than the N64 and GameCube entires is really, REALLY stretching too much.
Given your critique of Cake Factory's music, I'm surprised that as much as you nitpicked Mushroom Mixup, you never mentioned its music. The original's was so full of life, but the remake was just like "lol fast drums". It might be more "cool", but come on, the original sounds way more like a battle at the sea.
That fucking clock duel mini game where you have to jump over the clock's hands is the worst because it's rigged in favor of the person farther from the middle.
and here I was thinking "there's no way Booksquirm is not number one". Pleasantly surprised, even introduced me to a mini game I wasn't aware was even in the game
If you want to be driven you insane again, you should try ranking all of the Mario and Sonic Olympic Events. As someone who loves that series way more than it deserves and actively participates in online leaderboards for them, there is a lot of crappy luck based games hiding in skill based clothing. Smaller video would be just the London Party missions, but considering the Mario wiki doesn't even have a section for that mode (seriously not even a section on the full article of Mario and Sonic London, even though that was the big thing of that game) I don't think anyone cares about it. Those missions sucked too.
I’d enjoy a video on the DS version of Winter Olympics, honestly, ranking or no ranking. The story mode is actually really fun: you start with just Mario and Sonic, and recruit characters as you go along. Some characters are needed to take certain challenges for their own personal skills and quirks. For example, you need Waluigi to use reverse psychology to get a shy guy to spill the beans in one area, and in an earlier area, King Boo refuses to race anyone in Slalom except Luigi because he enjoys how much it creeps Luigi out
Happy birthday silok hawk!! Recently been catching up on recent videos and I've loved every minute of them, especially the mario kart track rankings. Keep up the good work.
18:07 funnily enough when me and a my buddies played super star, one of them was using a game cube controller and when we got to this game he dominated all us cause he was godlike at that strat you did. Mario Party brings the weird out of us
I feel like Mario party 8 had plenty of good minigames to choose from. A lot of them could have motion controls easily swapped out for stick controls like in Paint Misbehavin’. Each Mario party game should have has at LEAST 5-6 minigames representing it. The fact that 8, regarded by many as the last good one, got only 2 is a travesty.
Mario party 10 didn't do much better with only 3 minigames. That game has even less of an excuse, because there are far more games that use button controls. I think the fact that both mario party 8 minigames are 2 vs 2 doesn't help, as that's probably the least common minigame type of the three main ones.
Did DS get any minigames? I don't remember seeing any. It's weird how they keep ignoring it, despite being one of the best Mario Party's all around. Sure, a lot of them have touch controls or other DS exclusive stuff, but definitely not all of them.
With Flash Forward you also should be facing the camera. Luigi was facing the camera (even though his face was down his body was still facing the camera)
I remembered really enjoying Shell Soccer on MP9, I actually found out that if you angle your kicks right you could actually take out multiple goombas in a single goal
10:55 I'm pretty sure this is because it's how close you are to the center, as well as how much you're facing the center. From the videos I've watched (I don't own the game) that seems to be the rule.
For the mini game snow whirled, if you have a GameCube controller, it is easier to win since you can mash every button on the controller with ease. (Tip: Mash in a similar way you would do if you were playing in smash bros)
Finally watched this after putting it off for so long because I thought the thumbnail was petty clickbait and there would be NO way most of the minigames were made that much worse in the new version, but... yeah, you're actually justified for making the thumbnail like that. I really appreciate the effort and research you put into this, comparing the new versions to the classic games in multiple ways, from the gameplay nuances to even the tiniest things like sound design and audio mixing. Loved that minigame menu rant too about them trying to mask the lack of content in Superstars, lol. This is definitely a watch I did not regret, banger video my man
Another issue with Dizzy Dancing. It's possible to get softlocked because of how everyone needs to move to the center so if someone is bouncing on your head when the timer hits 0 the ai that takes over when the game ends has their pathfinding break and they'll never jump onto the record making it so the game softlocks. Happened day 1 to me.
As someone who plays with 3 other competent human beings and NEVER CPU's, I would have a vastly different ranking. But I wont insult you or say your wrong because of the different mindset and its your opinion and all. At least we both agree that Pirahna Pursuit sucks and Slot Car Derby is godlike. Continue making bomb ass content my good man.
14:17 This one is really fun but its indeed too short. They should make it like 3 points. So when the 3 team catches him they get a point, when he scores he gets point. Whoever gets 3 points first wins. That way would make it longer and overall more fun because it wouldnt be over in just 5 seconds.
4:00 well if they didn’t put that there, they could be open to another lawsuit (if someone got hurt) which could also include negligence for not including a warning the second time.
The "Tetris game" you may be looking for could be referred to as a Puyo Puyo game, as you match colors to create combos in both. Also, subcategories in genres are very helpful here, as Tetris and games similar to it are in the Arcade Puzzle Game subgenre, where the goal isn't to make it to the end of a stage by solving puzzles, but rather to see how many puzzles you can work through for a high score.
I feel like a lot of these criticisms are a bit misplaced? Like, the one for Shy Guy Says, about the pauses...you literally said yourself that they're meant to trip you up. That's the point of them, to fuck you over. If you don't like the slowness then fine but it's very clearly not JUST there to slow you down more.
"Shell-Shocked", while a clever pun, is also an outdated term used to refer to the PTSD that soldiers suffer from following exposure to combat. Considering we've had a mario party before that was criticized for using the term "spastic", they probably wanted to play it safe.
I’m really hoping that Nintendo makes a Mario Party game that isn’t a remake of something else but is instead original with new maps and mini games (and feature older ones as well. Also maybe show some love to Mario Party DS)
@@jowysw Super Mario Party is not Mario Party!! Despite how similar it functions it is just the one distant cousin nobody likes to talk about but still includes in their family reunions
Super mario party was like a prototype for this game. The only thing Im afraid of when it comes to a new mario party is that it wont live up to any of the older ones (or god forbid they bring back the car for some ingodly reason). Also I agree, we need some more mario party ds rep (Also advance because that had fantastic minigames imo)
Hey, I like the name Tread Carefully! I might be a little biased though. If both players cross the line at the same time in Mass Meteor, they tie rather than randomly picking someone. And I can't believe you didn't mention that in Shell Soccer, you can hit multiple goombas with a single kick, which makes for some incredible high-scoring plays!
Pretty sure the thing with other people’s aim bar thing disappearing in Chip-Shot Challenge is so you can’t cheat and base your shot off someone else’s
Great video! One problem I have with Superstars is the fact that the graphic design seems to be all over the place. Like, some of them (Like 23:36 ) look like a better looking, remade MP9 or a more vibrant SMP. Yet, some of them (Like 6:25 ) look UHD, 4K, and MODERN! Well, what I mean by that is they're trying to be almost realistic. Which, in this case, almost makes them look... Worse. It's all dull. I prefer something like 0:49 back in the Wii Era when it was sort of realistic but was clean and wasn't distracting. Though that might just be my nostalgia. That kind of Wii-Era wilderness just looks good to me. Maybe it's just the fact that I was in denial that I needed glasses when I was around 10-12 and saw everything somewhat blurry. (And also, they didn't have the technology to make the water look like oil)
What's crazy is that I found it way more easier to do the balloon part in dungeon duos in superstars and this is my favorite minigame too. There was really no rhythm on the old version to my discrepancy and I play this all the time
Games like Tetris are called "puzzle" games because they're analogous to making a game out of playing with puzzle pieces; Tetris itself was inspired by a traditional Russian wooden block puzzle. On the other hand, games like Zelda and Portal where you solve puzzles in an environment instead of fitting pieces together on a board are considered "environmental puzzle" or "adventure" games since you're making your way through an adventure by resolving obstacles in your path.
To be fair, the new switch controller designs are a lot softer than the wavy sharp plastic the n64 had, so I could rotate my palm on a switch controller at top speed for hours and see only slight redness
I really like Stick and Spin. I played it once. That one experience was amazing. So I was playing with my cousin, and we were doing those side minigame modes because we wanted to play all of them. We started Stick and Spin, and that was one of the most intense games I have ever played, dead serious. We went for like 20 minutes, only pausing once because we were disturbed. It was absurdly close. I lost, sadly, but damn if it wasn't one of the most intense experiences I've ever had in a game
So, Match 3 games? That mostly fits the 'tetris' games more, as they do not use tetrimo, which are spefically shapes made of four pieces. Match-3 Games such as Bejeweled and Candy Crush are much more similar to the puzzle games here.
Side note for 8:47 or game 85: Unofficial Tetris games you can play for free (examples being Tetrio and Jstris) as a substitute for official Tetris games are often called 'block stacking games'. They don't get the Tetris license, even though they're obviously meant to be Tetris, and because you stack blocks in Tetris games, block stacking games kinda covers that whole subgenre of puzzle games. I might be a bit late and other people have said this before, but I just wanted to put it out there.
Fun fact about Messy Memory There is a small chance that the toads steal an item from the player in first place, if that player has a significant lead. I speak from experience :,(

I've learned to really look forward to Mecha Marathon after learning a technique for mashing A+B at the same time, I've managed to reach the maximum distance of 70m with it. So now my goal every game is to reach that 70 - only done it once so far, usually get 60+ every game now.
Just because you have to match colors in a row doesn’t make it a Tetris game also Tetris isn’t a genre and also Tetris and portal are considered puzzle games
Also how the golf game works is that they *hide* the gauge of the computer players a few seconds before they actually hit the ball, not really randomize it. your point still stands, but I figured I'd bring up how it works.

I liked how you actually decided to see if the minigame got nerfed in comparison of the original version, making some of this points more fair that it should be
Also I would substract 5 places in each minigame that deleted the clouds and mountains with eyes in change of some generic landscape
42:30 Luckily they actually did make a good change, they offset your starting angle so you weren't facing directly towards the player opposite you.
Silohawk: this game doesn't work, but I hate these other games so much more even when they work
I was so happy to see Shell Soccer at #1. Before Superstars I only owned MP 9 and I played the hell out of that mini game.
Nah I’m sorry it’s not my favorite minigame
8:50 I would call such a game an "action puzzler": essentially, a puzzle game in which there is some time constraint by something happening without input so thinking fast is a requirement, contrasting a "calm puzzler" where you can (often) take as long as you need to think. And portal 2 would be a platformer-puzzler, which are often calm puzzlers.
Question is if a calm puzzler with a timer mechanic would become an action puzzler, which I personally disagree with.
3:49 Groundskeeper Willie: "That should do it"
I just found out that TETRIS is now its own game genre
I'm surprised how some games I hated scored pretty high and others scored really low. It's fascinating to see how opinions can differ that much.
Also, I never played Shell Soccer but it looks amazing! WHY DOES THIS MINIGAME NOT APPEAR IN THE MAIN MODE?
I never got why either! Maybe they thought it's too long or something? Even then they could just lower the number of goombas when the game gets picked in the main modes.
It's not in the main mode in 9 either. At least Goomba Bowling is in the party mode
"do YOU have a better name for Tetris games??" yeah, falling block games, i thought that was the norm?
Happy Birthday Silok! Hope ur having a nice day off
Thank you! I actually haven't slept yet since I've been getting this video ready. Imma do that now lol
The best thing about Shell Soccer is that you can hit multiple Goombas at once if you're close to the goal zone. It's risky but sooooo satisfying
That fucking clock duel mini game where you have to jump over the clock's hands is the worst because it's rigged in favor of the person farther from the middle.
how is ur comment from 3 hours ago when this premiered less than 2 hours ago
and here I was thinking "there's no way Booksquirm is not number one". Pleasantly surprised, even introduced me to a mini game I wasn't aware was even in the game
Characters without shoes will instead nail ice skates to their bare feet in the ice scating mini game
I wished the Soda can minigame returned. :(
Did DS get any minigames? I don't remember seeing any. It's weird how they keep ignoring it, despite being one of the best Mario Party's all around. Sure, a lot of them have touch controls or other DS exclusive stuff, but definitely not all of them.
@@_Moralle not canon/numbered.
8 has the worst minigames in the main series deal with it
With Flash Forward you also should be facing the camera. Luigi was facing the camera (even though his face was down his body was still facing the camera)
Great job on the video man, really appreciate the work.
Everyone I play with hates Puzzle Party, but I love it. I feel so justified!
49:40 thanks for telling how the game works. I couldn't figure this out by myself because the game was too hard for me to understand.
9:09 We call those falling block puzzle games
But they're not all blocks...
And they don't all fall...
1V3 Minigames are inherently unfair because it usually boils down to the one player having the advantage or the three players having the advantage.
Yeah 1v3s are hard to balance
For the mini game snow whirled, if you have a GameCube controller, it is easier to win since you can mash every button on the controller with ease. (Tip: Mash in a similar way you would do if you were playing in smash bros)
I thought the best way to mash in a gcc was just rolling the sticks
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SILOK!!
Also I want to erase Rockin' Raceway and Cast Aways from existance.
Continue making bomb ass content my good man.
if both players hug the right wall of mass meteor, they both win. the MP6 version uses port priority i believe
I love Goomba Spotting and Slot Car Derby and so glad you understand why they are so good!
Always thought Mario's Puzzle Party was like a minigame-sized Columns.
Those aren't "Tetris" games, they are single screen puzzle games and Portal is an FPS puzzle game...
I like how I suck at all the minigames where Silok claims I'd have an unfair advantage.
I usually call Tetris-like games Block Fall games. Though I’ve also seen Stackers used before too. I agree, though, they are NOT “puzzle” games
"Shell-Shocked", while a clever pun, is also an outdated term used to refer to the PTSD that soldiers suffer from following exposure to combat. Considering we've had a mario party before that was criticized for using the term "spastic", they probably wanted to play it safe.
3:50 "To avoid winning, do not rotate the control stick with the palm of your hand."
I’m really hoping that Nintendo makes a Mario Party game that isn’t a remake of something else but is instead original with new maps and mini games (and feature older ones as well. Also maybe show some love to Mario Party DS)
I mean... They already did that on Switch with Super Mario Party.
@@RoyalKingOliver it has new maps and minigames (as you said it should) and it has "Mario Party" in the name. It's a Mario Party.
@@RoyalKingOliver Similar? It is identical to other Mario Parties.
But it only happens with AI players, so what's the point?
Can’t believe he didn’t even mention the removal of the penguin buttholes in “bobsled race” 😞
I’m absolutely loving the new avatar sprites!
God I love how Yoshi almost syncs up with the music at 0:32
Great video!
There was really no rhythm on the old version to my discrepancy and I play this all the time
Games nowadays don't get playtested enough before they release & it shows every single time.
What does that have to do with this game tho?
Mario Party 9 actually had some pretty great minigames, but other then that, well…you know….
Finally someone understands how fun shell soccer is
Games like Tetris are called "puzzle" games because they're analogous to making a game out of playing with puzzle pieces; Tetris itself was inspired by a traditional Russian wooden block puzzle.
Actually with Chip Shot Challenge you don't see where the bots hit their ball so you can't copy or learn from them
HOW did they miss the opportunity to name Monty's Revenge "Mole-a-whack"
Bc monty is getting revenge for you running him over in flatiator
So, Match 3 games? That mostly fits the 'tetris' games more, as they do not use tetrimo, which are spefically shapes made of four pieces. Match-3 Games such as Bejeweled and Candy Crush are much more similar to the puzzle games here.
In the 3 "tetris" games they brought back here, you don't match 3 though
@@silokhawk Ive honestly always just called them match games. Which I think works for most of them, the 3 isn’t necessary.
Fun fact about Messy Memory
There is a small chance that the toads steal an item from the player in first place, if that player has a significant lead.
I speak from experience :,(
In the original or the remake?
Shell shocked is what they used to call ptsd before they identified the condition. Perhaps they didn't want that association?
The fact that they included Hide & sneak in the single player trio challenge mode is SOOO dumb. They even RANK you on how “well” you do. It’s luck based! How do I do better?!
43:10 I think they changed the name because shell shock is a term for ptsd so they probably wouldn't wanna reference something like that in mario party
Been watching since your worst kirby abilities countdown. Happy birthday man, so happy to see you grow and watch all the shit uve been doing.
Also how the golf game works is that they *hide* the gauge of the computer players a few seconds before they actually hit the ball, not really randomize it. your point still stands, but I figured I'd bring up how it works.
