  • @SuzukiKid400
    @SuzukiKid400 4 года назад +14

    Although the 10-speed gives a mechanical advantage over the 8-speed, the increased frontal area, and higher coefficient of drag on the trail boss decreases its efficiency because it makes it less aerodynamic. Also, the duratracs have parasitic losses due to higher rolling resistance, in addition to the higher rotational inertia. This is why the LTZ is faster, and gets better fuel efficiency. The conclusion from this video should not be that the 8-speed is better than the 10-speed, it should be that the 10-speed is having to overcome a lot of disadvantages on the trail boss in order to make the truck perform better.

    This is a very good comparison. I just recently traded my 2019 Ram Rebel after 2 years for the GMC Sierra AT4. While I still feel my Ram Rebel was hands down far superior in interior fit/finish/materials, electronic functions (driver display center, and UConnect system), and just about every feature of the interior, ride quality was also superior. But I was still very unhappy with Fiat/Chrysler for misleading fuel economy figures of the Ram Rebel. I drive from Florida to the midwest multiple times per year and the Rebel's fuel economy was absolutely dismal. The AT4 I purchased is loaded. The fuel economy was spot on what I expected and averages 3-5 mpg higher than the Rebel. As for your test results, I believe the tires are more to blame. My AT4 came with the 20" tires, but I did not want to pay the $899 for them so I had to wait till the dealer got the 18" Duratracs in. I drove 2 tanks of gas with the 20's before installation of the the 18" Duratracs were complete. Mileage dropped 1.5 mpg. So overcoming the beefy tread of the Duratracs takes away from both performance and economy.

    Trailboss 32.1" tires with the 18" wheels. (275/65 R18)
    LTZ 33" tires with 20" wheels. (275/60 R20)
    That means the trailboss has a gearing advantage with the smaller diameter tires. That combined with the 10-speed.
    If both trucks had 35" tires or larger then the advantage of the 10-speed would be more noticeable. 10 gears gives you more headroom to throw on larger tires without having to change the rear end ratio to compensate. I think that's why they slapped the 10-speed on the Trailboss.

    Very surprising results honestly especially considering the LTZ has taller gearing with the 8 speed and even has taller tires to boot. Assuming the LTZ has 275/60/20, that's a 32.9" tire and the trailboss has 275/65/18, thats a 32.1" tire.
    8L90 1st gear ratio is 4.56
    10L90 1st gear ratio is 4.70
    I'm assuming both trucks are 3.23 rear end

      The 8 speed has longer gearing and does not need to shift as often. Back in the day when manuals were quicker than autos, a 5 speed was generally faster though the quarter than a 6 speed if everything else was equal. You would normally finish the quarter in 3rd in the 5 speed vs 4th in the 6 speed. Shifting interrupts momentum.

    • @ShyaMiss
      @ShyaMiss 4 года назад

      @@darylcopp9013 not sure what transmissions you are comparing, but "back in the day" the Borg Warner T5 was a VERY common 5 spd, and the T56 was pretty much the only 6 spd you saw. They were both at a 1:1 ratio in 4th gear. 1-4 were geared very similar in most cases. Then both had 5th gear as an over drive, with the t56 getting an additional taller ratio as its sixth gear. In a situation like this, the ONLY way that a 6 spd car was crossing the line in 4th, while the 5 spd was in third, is if the owner of the 6 spd had dropped some really deep rear end gears in it.

    Both are adequately fast. Fun video though. I know that someone mentioned more gears takes more time to shift but really these were probably both only in 2nd gear by the end of that race. I wonder if the lift may have had something to do with it. Taller truck may take more time for weight to transfer on hookup? IDK results are certainly not what I would have expected. Maybe the computer in the 10 speed is pulling power in 1st gear to protect it?

In the winter time filthy salt spray from winter driving on slushy freeways builds up in those slats. When the temperature drops below 20 it would take you $10.00 in quarters to try and clean the dirty ice out of there at the spray wash. Even in the summer it seems as if they are dirt traps that are difficult to clean.

    I'd bet money the difference is in the torque converter tune. The 10speed is tuned for economy so the torque converter probably isn't going to be as aggressive with stall speeds. Even though the 10 speed's first gear 4.70 is slightly shorter than the 8 speed's 4.56, a higher torque converter stall and more aggressive ramp up would make the 8 speed quicker off the line.

      5.3 and 8 speed are proven technologies. The 10 speed is for competing with other brands and will have changes made to it when failures happen. The 6.2 is nice, but heavier, thirsty, and needs premium fuel. 6.2 belongs in the corvette. Buy a cold air intake, and install the trail boss lift from factory, keep the LTZ tires they are taller and will have higher ground clearance at pumpkin anyway. I thought the duratracks would be quicker because they are not as tall. (smaller diameter = geared down, so should be faster, but are heavier) My LTZ tires are about a half inch taller.

      The 10 spd has deeper ratios in the lower gears though. First gear actually has a decent gearing advantage compared to the 8 spd. I dont think it's the final drive ratio making the difference. But, the extra rotational mass of the trailboss tire/wheel package, the higher rolling resistance of the tires, all the little things that cut efficiency. That stuff is adding up to give an overall edge to the 8 spd equipped LTZ. It's also worth remembering that even two identical trucks will usually show one as having a slight edge over the other.

A 3 cylinder opposed piston diesel engine is not only supercharged but turbo charged, employing 270 hp and 480 lb.ft. of torque. 11 automobile manufacturers have already signed on for the research phase with the developer. The aforementioned engine possesses two crankshafts but no camshafts. When the opposing pistons in the same cylinder sleeve are pulled apart, exhaust fumes are exhausted out and fresh air is intaked, simultaneously. When the pistons in the same cylinder sleeve move towards each other the air is compressed, diesel fuel is injected and ignited, simultaneously resulting in the firing phase. There are 3 opposing pairs of pistons, each opposing pair of pistons in a cylinder sleeve with 3 total sleeves, each cylinder sleeve employing two opposing pistons. This engine has been around since the late 1800s.
