Oh yeah, I love MJ vs. the Real Bigs - especially considering these days where the center has become extinct. We have quasi centers in Dwight (undersized and underskilled), Bynum (good size but limited in power and physicality), and who else? So let's go back to the Golden Era when there was nothing like MJ routinely attacking dominant centers on his way to 40+ points with frenetic defense and bruising rebounds.
Although his shooting was slightly 'off' by his standards here (46% is a bad game when you actually are God), he still got his stuff going and made Robinson pay with a couple of blocks. But the Spurs came into this one with a Finals like energy that put the Bulls on their heels the entire time. MJ made a valiant effort to steal the win, but his awesome tie-maker was just an inch off. What a perfect shot he got off though - he's the man for just doing that alone.

Before those injuries David was IMO one of the greatest Centers ever. His prime was just short.
Growing up watching the Bulls during there dynasty of winning championships, I remember MJ was always a little more apprehensive going to the lane when he played Robinsons Spurs or Hakeem Rockets..but it did not matter since he had other weopons in his arsenal like his trusty fade away.

Well, he still dunked on both of them. And in one game he dunked on Robinson twice in the same game. So...
MrYoumitube - everyone was hesitant to enter the paint against any team - big men lived in the paint in that era with no 3 Sec Def rule like today. Also, contact was allowed on an incredible level and they could Hand Check back then - you see it all over this video. That's one of the numerous things that made MJ incredible - he was a mid size guard that could truly penetrate amongst the bigs and wasn't afraid of serious contact - possession after possession.
This was a lot tougher era to play in - defense was superior and the equal of offenses in this era.
***** Depends on who you're talking about. For Kobe, it is slightly above his career fg%, so this would be a slightly above average game for Kobe. But for MJ, this was an off night - From 1987-1993 he averaged 33ppg on 52% shooting, so it was rare to see him shoot below 50%.
Exactly! People can't understand how spoiled we were. Was the same when Jordan would score less than 30. We would ask if he was sick.

@filatelisti Today's faced paced game? Look at the early 90s there were multiple teams who averaged over 100 possessions per game. Today? No team is even close. The 80s and early 90s were known for their much faster pace.
Look how Shawn Elliot is guarding MJ, even with the hand check rule he had to stay like 5 ft away from him to prevent the drive and this is when MJ is 30 years old and much heavier and bit slower than in his previous years...MJ's quickness and exlosivness is the most overlooked factor when he is compared to other players..(you know who)
and there are countless times of moment when he outjump centers for jump ball, dunk over 7fters. all these has to do with his quickness in jumping. that hop steps he uses a lot in this game is something you dont quite see in nowadays game. but in terms of hop step, jordan is the only person in that league- no one else even come close to how smooth and creative he was when doing hop step.

Stats are pointless unless you are comparing the same era and same level. Its like me comparing some guy playing city league basketball with a backup NBA player and giving the advantage to the city league player because he has better STATS. STATS only tell a fraction of the story....

@hoopsencyclopedia Well Hakeem was 'undersized' at the center position but that didn't stop him from being the post defender and shot blocker ever. And while Dwight doesn't have the polish Hakeem did he is barely 25 and is years away from his prime as a center.

@sathernut He is listed at 6-9 in bare feet at draftexpress. But I have listened to your comment and agree that I'm being a little harsh here so I have edited my video description. I wouldn't call him dominant however as the great genuine 7 foot centers have been since he is undersized.
the 80's and 90's were filled with better, bigger, and stronger pf's and centers. all you have to do is look at the rebounding leaders from say 1993, and you will see that it isn't even close. however, on the flipside, the guards are more advanced now than they were back then, but the best guards and wingmen of that era are still as good or better than what we have today, there just wasn't the depth. i.e. drexler, dominique, penny, grant hill are as good as the wing players today.
and Oden obviously fizzled with injuries early on as well. Also Duncan and Garnett are all time great bigs, and duncan has pretty much played center for much of his carreer(certainly has true center size). Pau Gasol was pretty elite when younger too. Basically there have been lots of quality bigs, and their role has just changed. Study up though, because anylitics people very well could argue that if you are a scorer, Chandler is THE GUY you would want on your team to support you. Respect impact

@illVeritas Sure Hakeem was slightly undersized because relative to the plethora of 7-footers, he was smaller - but at 6-10/11, still had decent size. However, he was overskilled to make up for it. I don't quite see Dwight having enough natural skill to compensate for his lack of size. He can get by on athleticism for now, but we will have to see how his game hones.
@filatelisti Reason basketball is a BIG man's game is that it goes back to fundamentals. BIGs can draw in the defense just by posting up deep w/out having to risk injury by driving in. Injuries will deplete a player's NBA life. Those BIGs can dish out like driving guards do but without the risk. & reason why small players like Tim Hardaway & Stockton did well is that they werent high flyers that drove in to risk injury. They were great shooters & drove in to draw in the defense on the ground.
I just checked out some of the box scores from 06/07, and that is certainly not the case, lol. Look them up. They are on Basketball reference. And that was before Dwight hit his peak, as well. Dwight and Alonzo are on about the same level, as far as impact. I'd say Dwight was a better two way player at peak than alonzo was at peak. Hopefully Dwight recovers from his injuries.

@illVeritas He plays in an era that has no true centers that also lacks quality rebounders. He is a good help defender but not a very good one on one defender. Yao Ming used to eat him alive offensively and defensively imagine what better centers could do to him. Charles Oakley has gone so far as saying that Dwight would hardly even come off the bench back in the day.

tell me about that. and jordan still blows elliot away with that 5 ft distance. jordan did constantly blow people by even at older age( 96-98) with similar or larger distance in between them. another overlooked factor is how fast jordan can jump, to me , that is the most overlooked part. doesnt matter how high jordan can jump( high enough to dunk is good enough)look how many time he is getting rebounds in a group of 6"9 and above in this game.
how in gods name is Dwight Howard undersized? He has a 9'3" standing reach. Also Tyson Chandler has been playing great for the last couple years. hes an incredible player in part because his pick and roll mastery and efficiency on offense really opens things up for his teams. Really killing the theory that you need to be a high volume scorer or stat accumulater to be an amazing offensive player. And the old school bigs have just had a bad run of luck lately. Ming was always hurt.
@TheGrimTruth With no shoes, Dwight Howard is around 6'9. The Admiral is a legit 7 footer without the shoes. There's a reason why Dwight tries (and failing horribly) to model his game after Hakeem Olajuwon, because Olajuwon considers himself, so does Dwight, as undersized centers. Yes, Dwight's athleticism is VERY amazing, but his sheer power, skills, and post presence is no where near the 80's and the 90's famed centers.

Look up "Mourning dominates Dwight" - Keep in mind this is not Mourning at his peak. He totally dominated Dwight whenever they met up. Dunking on him, blocking his dunks and shots. And we're talking about older sicker Mourning dominating Dwight.
@MrHT23 first of all we're talking about a guy rony seikly who's career avg was 14 and 9...1. he is not a center 2. roy hibbert is avg 13 and 9 right now and he's a shot blocker...not to mention this is his 5th year...he'll be better next year than he was this year...rony never got better point blank
@hoopsencyclopedia totally agree. while howard has improved, he game smarts will nowhere be near the likes of david robinson, hakeem and similar. Howard still doesnt have a go to move or patented shot.

no question this era was perfect...if mj and others were playing now i would say that nba game today is wonderful but it isn't the case.
@getyoasshome I have to agree. Not that Dwight is a scrub but I do think he would have a hard time against true centers one on one. Shaq, Robinson, Ewing, Olajuwon, Smits would give him a lot of trouble one on one. However, I think what makes Dwight stand out so much is his help defense. I think his help defense is as good as anyone's in any era.
@illVeritas True that he is best as a defender and rebounder primarily due to his athleticism and having virtually no real C to play against today. I have seen DH up close and was shocked at how uncoordinated he is and because of that and his shortness, I would use him more as an enforcer type PF ala Rodman, Oakley etc. next to a real 7 ft center with skills back then. With his lack of height and skill, he would be a mismatch every night at C so PF would maximize his utility skills.

but that means nothing. i think Dikembe and Ben Wallace have like 3 or 4 DEF player of the year awards each and guys like Robinson, Pippen, Hakeem , Rodman have like 3 combined
Actually ur correct. 16 for 35 is 46% & not awesome at all but when thats considered an off day, because by his standards it is, then thats pretty awesome. 46% is bad game for MJ while Kobe shoots 45% for his career & 44% in the playoffs.

@hoopsencyclopedia Hoops you're a little Harsh with your criticism of Dwight...he rebounds and defends as well as any center of any era and while his offensive game may not be Dream-like it is certainly serviceable. Don't get too protective of your favorite era.
i agree that there aren't many true centers today, but you're calling dwight howard undersized? what?? Hes probably "underskilled" but on defense he is a menace in the way robinson was.
@popeyeisgood And all these guys would limit Dwight's tip ins, dunks and rebounds as well while having huge scoring nights so mentally, Dwight would be a much less confident player knowing he would be a 2nd tier C at best back then. And we all know how his mental focus is not one of his strong points already.
Dwight's more like 6'10", and has a 7'5" wingspan with absolutely ripped muscle throughout... and at approximately 270 lbs Howard would have been capable to get a bit under Robinson and overpower the shit out of him.
Dwight should be scoring 25 a game by now even with his below-average free throw shooting but he's coming around on offense

now a days primes are not the same. wear and tear on your legs coming out of college stun your prime @ 31 yrs old. especially for bigs
D.Howard 1st of all isnt considered to be a center IMO he would have been a good player in the 80's but not like he is dominating the Leauge right now. He would have seen how legit centers played back in the day and how they set up there defence for center with limited O abilities such as D.Howard has. If you really want to be technical if you wanted to bring up his true POS. he wouldnt have lasted against the Webber,Wallace its a couple more but I wont mention shaq bc there is diff no reason
So who is better David Robinson or Dwight Howard?
The big difference is Jordan is expected to make shots in the 4th Qt. and it's surprising when he doesn't while Lebron is expected to fail and when he does people take the opportunity to bash him over being the best in the game but he is the best in the game (right now). Jordan's greatness is acredited mayorily because of what he's done against all odds especially in the 4th Qt. Lebron has NOTHING on MJ when it comes to dropping big buckets in the 4th QT game after game and year after year.

@jasonmotley exactly and i say the same and those are all hall of famers but when people on here start yappin talking about he would have a hard time against GREG OSTERTAG AND GEORGE MURESAN i have to draw the line. i dont think dwight would get shut down at all and i think he would do more than just hold his own against the greats because of his athleticism and defense.
@filatelisti Thats only true because the game today encourages more scoring & a faster game. No defensive 3 sec allows centers to actually stay near or in the lane to block layups & hurt smaller players. Hard fouls were not flagrants back in the day. So centers before & other players would put you down on the ground to teach you to not come in. Smaller players would get injured mroe often & not last in the NBA. Look @ Kobe, when has he ever been put down to the floor like the older players?!
@illVeritas yeah but consider howard limits in ability and competition. Ola, Rob, Pat, Shaq, Sabonis, Mutombo, and others would be even better if they didn't have to face each other. Howard and Bynum is all you got today. Howard is a less skilled Robinson, Bynum is different he is closer to a physically weaker robinson. They are good, but not great.

yea. i always thought that d rob was a bit stiff in his post-up move compared to ewing, hakeem, and even the prime shaq..but if you watch howard plays today you see how superior d rob is as a athletic center that could also post up. in terms of skill, i think the only ture skilled big man now is gasol ( but he isnt much on the other end) and for that type of skilled big man you got rik smith, sabonis, or even yao ming(not from the 90s)

@filatelisti So if you bring back the game to its true form where its survival of the fittest & not where the rules are changed to make it easier. Now the NBA isnt focused on defense as much as they used to be. No hand checking means you guard your player by getting fouls or letting them by. No hard fouls doesnt detract players from driving in. A defensive 3 second rule makes shot blockers come from the weak side. They made it easier to score & have decreased the emphasis on GOOD DEFENSE!

yea. and i seriously believe that penny and hill would have neutralize some of the hype of kobe if they were healthy the whole time. personally i think grant hill was on his way to become something like what we are seeing lebron is doing, only in a more team oriented, and tasteful way.
@illVeritas dwight is by far the best center today, but back in mj's era, he would be at best, the 5th or 6th best center. that's a pretty big difference. but can you imagine? dwight would have his hands full every night, even if he might be slightly better overall than alonzo, dikembe, daughtery, seikely, gilmore, sikma, parish, and im missing several. he wasn't better than ralph sampson or moses malone or ewing, olajuwon or david robinson or shaq.
@getyoasshome With the exception of Chandler and DAJ those are PFs, not centers, Iggy and Artest are SFs..Look at the center position in 1993 season. Even the 20th best center that season would be TOP5 today..Shawn Bradley was a stiff, but he once averaged 13-8 with 3.4 blocks, that would make him easilly an all star this year.

to play well in the post one does not need to have legit center size. look at barkley, malone, jordan, even magic. yea howard is just not even close in terms of basketball talent. i like how these players like to look back in times and pattern their games from the greats- and understatement of how inferior they are now.
@hoopsencyclopedia hoops i love your channel and everything but you are wrong on this one. Dwight is 7 feet tall, his athleticism is unmatched for a guy his size. He doesnt have polished post up moves but his athleticism makes up for it, I mean he's averaging 20 points a game and 60% FG. You couldnt be more efficient than that. And to say he's just a bench player had he played in the 90's is just plain ludicrous.

I don't put Dwight in the class of of hakeem, Robinson, or Shaq. Ewing and mourning, sure. I'd say he has been better than both those guys( though not last season, again he suffered a serious injury).
Chandler is a great player who cleans up very efficiently on offense, which may actually be his greatest strength. His value is less traditionally perceivable and more accessible from an advanced statistics standpoint. I'd say he has been playing better than a lot of the guys you mentioned.

guess who is also in the top five? Tim Duncan(beast), Cowens (beast), D Rob(monstrous beast), Ben Wallace(beast). Duncan, Drob and Wallace have obvious claims to leagues best at peaks.
Analytics people know that an efficient clean up man is very helpful, hence the obvious value of chandler shooting 70 % TS and scoring 13 per 36. That is much more useful than scoring 30 on 50% TS% And you honestly don't think that a prime Dwight Howard attracted a lot of attention in the post? that's hilarious.
What is a "true" center? A big man with no outside shooting touch? The game has evolved, skill level is increasing for big man, now they can shoot a little. Because they can shoot these little mid range shots people are calling them not true centers anymore.

Dwight has NO competition at his position, and while he is decent defensively he is terrible offensively with virtually no post game and when he does face another F/C of a high caliber, he usually gets beaten up. I mean face it.. his highest block per game avg is what Robinson averaged during his last few season....not hard to avg 13 rebounds a game when you are the only center.. if he had played in the 90s, he would not even make an all nba team.... much less win any player awards.
@getyoasshome gety, your right i would have to have Dwight's back when comparing him to Ostertag and Muresan. He's way better than them and his quickness would just kill them. He would have a hard time backing down Ostertag so I am sure he would go around and over a guy like him.
