  • A great American director (Robert Altman) adapts the stories of a great American writer (Raymond Carver) to create a great American movie! It's an epic journey that includes clowns, live jazz and Alex Trebek. What's not to love?
Short Cuts is Altman at his best. It features his trademark overlapping dialogue, interweaving plotlines and a large assortment of unique characters. The movie is based on 9 of Carver's short stories (plus 1 of his poems) and features one of the most extraordinary casts ever assembled. The overall plot centers on a group of discontent people in Los Angeles who are desperate to find meaning in their lives. It's funny, it's sad, and it's completely absorbing. Don't let the 3 hour runtime scare you -- it goes fast.
    Short Cuts (1993)
    Produced by Fine Line Features
    Directed by Robert Altman
Written by Robert Altman and Frank Barhydt
Based on the stories of Raymond Carver
Starring Andie MacDowell, Bruce Davison, Julianne Moore, Matthew Modine, Anne Archer, Fred Ward, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Chris Penn, Lili Taylor, Robert Downey Jr., Madeleine Stowe, Tim Robbins, Lily Tomlin, Tom Waits, Frances McDormand, Peter Gallagher, Annie Ross, Lori Singer, Jack Lemmon, Lyle Lovett, Buck Henry, Huey Lewis and a cameo by Alex Trebek.

Robert Altman’s run from The Player to A Prairie Home Companion was one of greatest closing acts to a life and career ever. Short Cuts is fantastic and not talked about now nearly enough.

Thanks for watching! I completely agree with you. I remember seeing The Company in the theater and thinking that Altman was still so original and vital as a filmmaker. Even his Tanner on Tanner follow-up was excellent, satirizing the then-current 2004 election like nobody else.

      Even long before "The Player",
he gave us such gems as "M*A*S*H"
      & "Brewster McCloud" in 1970
      & "H.e.a.l.t.H" & "Popeye" 10 years later.

@@hollywoodvulture I couldn't say! I could cheat and google, but to be honest that's boring. I have not seen the movie in question, of that I am certain or I would remember it.

Same here, I dont why but this movie was so original to me, I first caught it in the middle and made sure I found out when it was on again to catch it from the beginning

Agree totally. Released the same year as Schindler’s List, this was the one I thought was the best of 1993.

    • @hollywoodvulture
      @hollywoodvulture  Год назад +2

Yes. It was difficult for any movie to be up against Schindler's List that year. But at least Altman received an Oscar nomination for Best Director. Not many filmmakers could handle this material as well as he did.

Wow. Really love this list. It's crazy, I feel the same way about Polyester. I had the DVD with the odorama card. Divine's performance is so powerful.
I agree with every choice, though. I even have a few of them in my list already. These are exactly the kinds of movies that inspired me to start this series.

What a phenomenally good review this is! You knocked it out of the park when you announced who the actors were; that's my favorite part of this video and that's hard too because this whole video is so good! No spoilers here but to those who have not seen it, the 3 + hour run time only feels like 2 + hours. And the last 15 minutes...maybe 10 minutes, is one of the greatest consummations of movie history! Certainly the most entertaining, illuminating, tragic and funny! You'll feel emotionally tired, but the experience will be worth it; trust me.

Great review! I've still got my Criterion Collection Laserdisc with digital audio, director's commentary, a chapter program playlist presenting each character's individual storylines, and many more special features. Isolated music audio tracks, interviews...
It's a wonderful presentation of this brilliant film. 👍😎

3 Women is so great, too. Sissy Spacek and Shelley Duvall probably give their best performances.
