- cut from 'Short Cuts' by Robert Altman. I highly recommend checking out the full ensemble piece. after reading Carver's short story (featured in his short story collection "Cathedrals"), I felt it visually. I am happy it has been adapted for the screen. also, this edit was a fun way to learn Avid Media Composer.

This is the most depressing short story and part of the film but Altman perfectly captured the essence of the writing
This movie deserved a Best Picture nomination
Jack Lemmon takes the long walk of the soul down the hall.
Such a good actor, love him.
Robert Altman made some of the best films of all time simply by showing people as they are, strengths and flaws alike. I think he wanted to show how similar we all are, despite our differences.
One of the most harrowing tragic sequences in movie history.Altman is a genius.
Altman is not the genius here, it's Carver
One of my favorite Altman films. Genius and so LA
The most LA movie I’ve ever seen
2:37 so that's what Sia did before she became famous.
As a kid the only thing this movie ever did was get me to look both ways when crossing the street
Long movie, but an excellent one.
You did a beautiful job at paring the Raymond Carver story about the little boy to its essentials. As far as I know all the various short stories were interwoven by Altman.
thanks Paula. I can't emphasize enough how great I think Altman did on interweaving the shorts into one cohesive film. but at the same time, I think a little something went missing during the process, so that's why I wanted to pull this one story out and see how it stands.
That godamn cake!
Fun playing with the federals ?
Sillies
in the story the boy was with his classmate before and during the car hit
And not only that, his name is Scotty and not Casey.
@@MrJamieMurph4141969 yeah!
Where is the rest of this episode?
this is pieces taken from the feature film Short Cuts by Robert Altman
I don't understand what's the baker fault? He hadn't made anything wrong!
He called their home over and over, aggressively. And ultimately making her feel threatened. You need to watch the whole movie to see his side of the story, where he felt he was being cheated and wronged after the stressful work he went through to make her cake.
@@made7a3basy61 - You could just purchase the movie like a normal person would...
It still did not entitle him to make obscene phone calls to them, much less. There was another adaptation of this on RUclips that seems to be gone now where Howard(the father) tells Ann(his wife, Scotty’s mother, the son’s name is Scotty in the original story)-“I’m going to go down to the bakery and give that son of a bitch a piece of my mind! I don’t care if we owe him a million dollars; he still has absolutely no right to make obscene phone calls to us!” Imagine what would easily happen to him today, with CALLER ID and MOBILE PHONES, MUCH LESS-as everyone knows, ALL of today’s mobile phones have caller ID, which immediately registers the caller’s number as the call comes in. The baker would be in BIG TROUBLE today for sure for such actions.
This movie is a TERRIBLE adaption of the story "A Small Good Thing."

Sorry, but this is POOR adaption of the story, "A Small Good Thing!!" The Grandfather isn't even in the story!!!! The parents and the baker are the most important characters!!! Especially, the parents answering the phone to the baker's nasty messages and finally figuring out who it is.
while I agree with you, it is the most hollywood attempt I could find. Since this is cut from a larger film some of the details like the Grandfather stem from plots in other Carver stories. My biggest pet peeve of this adaptation is having the baker serve them muffins instead of cinnamon rolls.
The tragic grandfather makes this scene completely , ya quibling pedant twit.
