Well said. And I couldn't agree more. It's a drag that Altman's gone and no new Altman since Prarie Home Companion. But, the good news is, we still have all of his wonderful gems to enjoy, again. God, he was awesome.

he can't ride a bike... but he can make a masterpiece. with all other big films, like citizen kane or pulp fiction, you see it's a great film, but you also can still see how the author came to that place. with short cuts you can't see it any more. it's like you can guess how a warhol was made, but you can't guess for a da vinci. the talent is just so out of the realm of human, that you no longer have a reference in your own experience. you've never seen anyone draw even remotely like that. that's short cuts. i don't know how he did it. how can you possibly engage the viewer in twenty stories at the same time, like a loom with all these threads that join into something? nashville as well. this is so insanely hard, it's practically unfeasible. i think altman is the true great american director, even more so than hitchcock. it's hard to say that, because hitchcock invented a lot of the film language, but it feels that it's only altman who really used it to say something non trivial.
I always thought that FOX would have been smart to contract Altman to direct three or four episodes of MASH when it first came out. He seemed kind to the series in this interview, but l have seen interviews where he downplayed the series and accused the creators of heing racist againt 'the brown people' - whatever that means. But he created the style and tone of MASH and surely would've helped usher in the series to even greater success. And the fact that FOX was so cheap over the years as to not throw ANY money his way as thanks is embarrassing and very sad. But typically Hollywood.
Robert Altman talks about his work with admirable directness, honesty and a genuine hard-nosed humility. He was responsible for some of the greatest films ever made by a U.S. director, and even in his lesser movies gave actors the creative room and guidance to do some of their best work. Good enough for me. :-)

I thought 'The Long Goodbye' with Elliot Gould as Philip Marlow was his best film
