Recycling the "O" Scale Rio Grande and Pacific - IT LIVES!

- We have been following the dismantling of Steve Strebel's "O" scale (On3 - On30) Great Model Railroad, however, Steve has decided to REBUILD by recycling the leftovers of the dismantle.
Steve had been having health issues, and after the sudden death of co-builder and roommate Al Badham, fearing for the future, he is breaking what is one of the worlds best model railroads into dioramas.
HOWEVER! After dismantling much of the layout, Steve has decided to rebuild the layout! Keeping about a third of the original railroad. However the new layout is following some strict rules: All track will be easy to reach, a few inches from the edge of the layout. NO duck under or over head. All track about 48 inches from the floor sticking to the walls. One huge peninsula up the center of the room, again all track near the edge of the benchwork.
So far the new railroad is built from pieces of the old railroad. Track and roadbed is recycled from the old layout as are many structures AND plaster scenery! All spliced together from chunks of the old mountains mounted on new cardboard webbing. Hum.... Totally green recycling!
So glad Steve is keeping the railroad! It's fantastic! Nothing wrong remodeling the whole thing... Everyone's model changes over the years... Looking forward to seeing more of the new model!
Simple but pure art.
How important was encouragement from Steve's friends to get him building again? He has such a wonderful talent!
We stick together. But that kind of pain just takes the fight out of a person. As it happens I’m now in the same boat. Ouch! Can’t work on the layout or much of anything. Glad he got a new hip. Not sure where I’m heading on this.
If I lived in Salt Lake area I'd want to apprentice under Steve. That's a skill that needs to be passed on.
I agree Shawn!!
Great show. Very glad to see Steve's railroad coming back to life.
Sigh of relief
It's glad to see Steve rebuilding his layout.
Ditto
Steve is an inspiration . Life certainly dealt him some wicked curve balls. Here he is hitting home runs . Outstanding
He’s finely happy again. Sigh. It was bad. Bad times. But now Steve is building about 14 hours a day. Every day.
Ive been following you for two years now, and Im thankful to see Steve up and moving around and keeping himself loving what he does!
Now my turn to be messed up. Doctors tomorrow. But Steve is doing great 👍
Judging by the time you sent this message to me, you've been up late. I'm up this morning already myself and read your message. May God grant you a good night of sleep for your day ahead! I believe all will go well for you today! Sleep good and have a great day in all you do!
Steve is a true artist. I wish I had half his skills, and am happy to have experienced his railroad through your channel! He has been an inspiration to me.
I stand all amazed. Well sit really. Sometimes I stand. Mostly sit these days.
This is so grand! Steve is an American Master Model Builder and his great work SHOULD BE memorialized. You've gone a very long way toward making this happen, guys! Thank you so very much! I wish other modelers here on YT would take notice of the recognition of great work such as this you at Toy Man TV are doing! And also thank you very much for this HAPPY ENDING, such as it is... yeah, "don't build a railroad you can't work on." Wish I wasn't so darned old... and broke! LOL Keep on keepin on, guys. arthur.
Very cool, I wish him the best
Dirk thanks!
I love this model railroad and I’m glad to see it live on.
A long way to go to get back. But Steve is building fast!!
Your friend Steve is an inspiration to all of who love to build models. Can't wait to see what the future holds.
The new layout is building fast! Really fast.
You both are an amazing Couple and so connected in manerism's and speech. I enjoy your video's. Your 4014 excursion coverage was Top Notch like all of your Video's. Thank You!
I'm really glad you have some video record of Steve's original RR. 40 years is quite a lot of time building something just to have it disappear.
And how! I have hundreds if not thousands of photos. So glad I did.
@@ToyManTelevision I wish I could look through them all .
Great to see this stuff moving on. Gives me the "warm fuzzies." Thanks, Paul in Thailand
Wow. Long way off. But thanks!!!!
@@ToyManTelevision What happened to that Oleson guy that used to publish layout stuff and a book for HOn3?? With Paul Scoles and Lonnie Shay now gone I wonder about him, really. Thanks and live 100 years. Paul
Well nice to see that Steve is rebuilding parts.
No, you are far, FAR from "idiots". I really enjoy your videos.
I think Steve is doing the right thing. He obviously has such passion for the hobby that he will be doing it until he steps foot into his grave. He's building an easy to maintain railroad that he can work on for the rest of his life. I wish him nothing but the best.
Yup! So glad to see Steve hard at it. This was such a hard time. Really depressing. But Steve is doing great and jut going strong on the layout
Like seeing what Steve has done here. All the best to him and the both of you folks! :-)
Thanks!!!!! More soon
Dale, nice to hear the update on Steve's layout and that he is saving it (at a much more workable level). It was sad to see the teardown phase but great to hear the layout is rising from the "ashes." Thank you guys for a delightful renewal story. Dean from Minnesota
You two are not idiots you two are a funny pair any give us excellent videos keep up the good work I'm glad to see Steve back
Idiot is a relative expression. And I do mean relative. Like weird relatives. Like Addams family weird.
It's great to see your friend Steve doing well, he is a great craftsmen, looking forward for more updates on his new railroad.
It’s quite a new layout. And building so fast!
That was enjoyable seeing Steve continue on in the hobby and not giving up on it. Yeah from other videos there was no room to add anything now he's starting with a new workbench if you will so we can get creative again.
I understand about having mobility issues because of having back injuries doing what I used to do 10 years ago isn't easy so I understand where Steve is at and my hat's off to him on his Endeavor on his new layout and thanks for bringing us along
Way to go Steve! Look forward to what you come up with in your new adventure.
Great new design!
Great to see Steve motivated and creative again. He has a lot to teach us all.
All good news. Wow!
Great advice about keeping it simple. Great video!
I redesigned the 2/20.3 scale railroad based on what Steve is doing. New rule no bench work wider than 3 feet to a wall. No more than 6 feet on a peninsula. Less when possible.
Really enjoy this one, I am new into learning about railroading.
Wow, just wow. What a great talent and learning experience!
And how!
Steve is an inspiration to everyone. I'm finally starting my model railway/railroad journey.
Very exciting update of the railroad, can waiting for more great videos!
More coming soon
I can’t wait until Steve can run trains again!
You guys make the best quality videos on YTube. So glad that Steve is hangin in there and back being busy working on the railroad...( all, the live long day). Gotta be a song there somewhere... :-)
I’ve been sleeping in the chair car, all the long cold cold night! I’ve been sleeping in the chair car cause sleepers cost to much.... needs work..
@@ToyManTelevision 😀
Well done Steave! Keep up the good work! I have a a bad hip and need a replacement but have to lose a of weight. So I continue building a dresser, shelf and window bracket rail road. Dail love your blog.
Ken Cox
My hip is killing me now too. But they say replacement is not an option. More today. Doctor at 1. Train show at 2. Both good. But in different ways.
Dale thanks for sharing the update on Steve. I am glad he is doing to well after that rough patch he and everyone that he and cares for him went through, glad Steve is back.
And the new layout will no doubt be even better.
Roy Smith suggested using sparkling compound instead or in addition to scluptamold. Just a suggestion.
Steve uses that on his stones and bricks. I will show how he does that. Everything stone is wood. The stone is burned in and then coated with sparkle and artist medium.
Great to Steve is back at it again! I'm glad to see the new sections look as amazing as the old railroad. Thanks for the video. Please make LOTS more of Steve's new layout.
Many more coming!
Very impressive!
Very
It's good to see your friend Steve is up and about. The shows you've d one on his layout really show it.
I can understand the discouragement with loss of mobility. thankfully in Steve's case he was able to get help. And is able to resume.
Looking forward to seeing what he builds. By the way, where is the accidental railroad these days?
Have fun
Well the ARR is not doing much. But stuff is happening. Some work on the logging line. A bit on the big yard. Sort of work on the garden railroad (work on the yard). And modeling! I have an entry for the National NMRA show tomorrow
I love watching you too having fun with such passion, you are great ambassadors for the hobby
Wow. That means a lot. Thanks
I'm sure Al would want his work to continue to be enjoyed -- that's a good legacy!
More than we know what to do with. But we are heading in a direction with it. For now use some here and there.
Wow, what an incredible layout! You are good friends to support him and encourage his renewed enthusiasm to re-build a new layout.
It’s been tough times. Illness. Deaths. Challenging times. But we are fighting back!!
Great lessons. Really enjoyed this!
I’ve totally changed my design based on what Steve is doing.
Whenever i heard it was being dismantled i cried, hearing this brought hope back.
Me too.
Awesome update on Steve and his layout, so glad he has decided to rebuild, with his talent it's not recycling it's upcycling, thank you for taking us along to see Steve, always a great inspiration
Rick B aka Plastic butcher
Nice video and very uplifting.
Starting sad with Al’s passing and Steve’s body health issues and moving on to dismantling this awesome railroad.
Things have really turned around for the good indeed.
Half way thru this video somehow knew I was going to hear you mention “The Phoenix rises from the ashes”.
So glad to see Steve back to doing his magic.
Thanks for sharing your friends experience
👍👍👍😎😎😎
Thanks! What a ride but it tells a good story with several lessons. No one lives for ever. Don’t try to pack 100 pounds of manure in a 30 pound bag. And don’t... er do... I don’t remember. Oh do now what you can because tomorrow you may not be able to remember just what you had planned. Living in the hereafter. I can’t remember what I’m here after.
Oh by the way excellent video. Look forward to the next one.
Very interesting video, Dale, thanks! The re-construction and transformation of a layout can be more fun then the original. I'm looking forward to seeing it. Keep it up!
Steve is looking forward to a better layout. His newer structures are much better than ones built 30 or 20 or even 10 years ago.
Loved this one!! So glad he decided to stay and rebuild!
And let me know when you do the new shirts!! We got so many "hey, he was here!" , on our trip to NM and CO. Love you two...Thanks!!!!
We just put them up on Teespring. Should be on the channel but it’s screwing up. Screwing around good. Screwing up bad!
I have to admit I'm not too keen on modeling and models so I played hooky the last three episodes. I'm glad that Steve has jumped back into building a new railroad. I can relate to how getting older has made it harder to enjoy my hobby the way it uses to. Gardening is so hard on the body and the older I get the this is becoming obvious anyway good to see Steve is back at it.
This is pure art.
Amazing set
hey that's great! my compliments
Hi. And thanks. Hope you are well.
It is a very good point of keeping layouts simple. I burned myself on an HO, On30, and finally HOn3 layout that were far too much. I ditched that all to build a small 42"x8' HOn3 layout that certainly stays within a reasonable goal of completion. We often want to build more train than we can handle!
Still planning a video on simple small and wonderful layout design!
Documentary time, start to finish of Steve's layout? Please keep us all posted.
Yup!
That was sad at the beginning.....i lost alot friends from passing away and second most painful thing is them moving.....I was feeling ur pain. I'm just so glad this was like a hallmark Christmas movie where it had a GREAT ENDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! keep up great work idiots.....lol....YOU TWO CRACK ME UP AND YOUR GREAT PEOPLE!!!!!!!!....WOULD LOVE TO SIT AROUND AND TALK ABOUT WHATEVER!!!!!!! THANK YOU AGAIN!!!
This getting old crap is not for the weak. But mostly it’s great. Buy the friends drying crap... we just lost another too. And a funeral in LA in 2 weeks. And so it goes. Life has taught me two things. Well more than two but I’m working on an old saying here and don’t wanna clutter the moral. I digress. First. Anything is possible. Two. Nothing is permanent.
I have always had a different perspective about life, and how fragile it is. That may have stemmed from my little cousin passing away, shortly after he was born. I was only 5. My oldest daughter had lost 4 of her best friends by the time she was in 10th grade. There were also a bunch of classmates.. Car accidents and suicide. And we were from a really small rural community where everyone knows everyone. I was scared for her to even get her driver license! Then.. It was the same thing with my youngest daughter.... Two of her close friends ended their life early.
I really had a epiphany, of sorts, after loosing my parents... My dad was only 63, and my mom just had celebrated her 75th birthday......... There was soooo much that they always talked about doing....... talked and talked........... but never did.
I really believe that one should live their life to it's fullest! To spend each and every day enjoying something... Even if it's just the drive to work, or watching a beautiful sunset. Take those chances.. Go on that vacation!! See your family... and visit friends. Continue your education.. be it taking classes, or just learning for the heck of it! Pursue a hobby, and enjoy it! Remember............... Nobody gets out of this life alive! The adage, " You can't take it with you when you go" will always hold true. Memories are our only true possession. You can choose to make some good memories.... and without a doubt, leave some memories behind! :D
WOW!!! Both of you just blew my mind.......its all true every word both of you said. I agree life is so precious and short. I remember when I was a kid weeks were like months and months were like years....now...I'm digging both feet in the dirt trying to get the hours to slow down. I feel like the game of sims. Minutes are seconds.....but that is terrible what those kids went through. I'm so sorry for "ALL" of your most recent losses. Along with karyne's lost with his children growing up....this is terrible!!!!. I'm sorry that I'm all over the place but the comments blew my mind all over just like my message back to you both. God bless you all!!!!!
GO STEVE!
NO! Stay!! oh. Oops yea! Go Steve!
Ok, first off - if "having fun" makes you two idiots, then I'm damn happy to be an "idiot" right alongside you!
Because you two really know how to have a blast!
Now, I'm a young man myself, 26 years old. And I'm a train fanatic.
Got myself an O-Scale Big Boy from Lionel.
I know you guys don't run 3-Rail O-Scale but if you did I'd buy some of those scenes from you in a heartbeat!
(I'd want one without a glued-down train though as I'd be buying the scenes to run my own trains through. If a running train was included though, I'd be happy)
Still, Steve's layout is an inspiration to us all. I especially liked the mine scene.
Honestly, I'm of the opinion that this was a little Miniature Wunderland right there at Steve's place.
Because your modeling skills exceeds theirs in places.
His layout was an inspiration to us all.
LONG LIVE THE RIO GRANDE AND PACIFIC!
Thanks! And you may be interested to know that many of his buildings are moving to a 3 rail O Scale layout! I saw it a few weeks ago. Looking good! Love that Lionel big boy! And the new layout is going soooooo fast!!!! May be finished by Tuesday. (Not sure which Tuesday)
@@ToyManTelevision Good choice too!
Larger scales are good for fat fingers, clumsy folks, and old people!
(No offense. Personally, I'm a bit of a klutz, so I need a tough train. I'd probably bust anything other than that as I'm worse than your average football player when it comes to fumbling! And with how expensive these trains are, you do NOT want to fumble anything that's not cast iron!)
If and when the new layout comes into operation, let me know!
Or, preferably, post a video!
Hi from Texas!
Kerry
I learned along with Steve. At 65 years old, I built a simple helix to expand to a second level. At 68 years old, I ripped it out and abandoned the second level. Crawling inside the spiral isn't fun any more. (PS Anyone want an HO, 27" radius helix before I take it apart? It's in Phoenix, AZ)
Where abouts-state-are you located. Im in MD.

Hee Hee, heeeeee! Always fun to be first!!
@@karynfelix-the-Cat yeah :D
Know what you mean about making things easy. I have lots of N scale stuff but my son has made it clear that he doesn’t want any of it. I have acquired select road names and certain pieces (like my Number 5 galloping goose, which completely doesn’t fit anything I have.
When your in Oregon you got to check out my train club, Columbia Gorge Model railroad club
I have I mind like a steel trap. Rust. But I’ll try to remember. Or let people know when we know when we are heading up there.
Hay toyman how's your morning
Working on the F3 units for the National NMRA show and contest. Entering tomorrow
How naive of me. Should have known better. Mixing wall (aka scultamold) is no fun.
I’ve never used it. But Steve and don bath in it I think.
