Of course not, they sound COMPLETELY different because it's evolved through different eras through different decades so there was 60s rock and roll and then 70s rock and 80s rock & punk and 90s rock and so on and they all evolved from each other but they still sound very different. Jazz is the same. The problem is that again, casual music fans watch things like the film La La Land, which is a great film, but it's ridiculous nonsense. Ryan Gosling plays an obsessive jazz lover but still only plays stuff from the 50s and 60s at the latest. But jazz has evolved completely in the decades since then. But the viewing audience walks out of the cinema thinking that's what modern jazz sounds like. But of course, it's not. Knower is what modern jazz is. For their actual albums tracks recorded in a studio, they often don't even use real drums despite Louis Cole being a world class drummer. Instead he programs the drums in whatever music production software he uses. Probably something like Logic, I suppose. I've been a musician for nearly 3 decades now but I'm very analogue and don't know much about electronic music, but I really really want to learn, but right now I just can't afford a mac book. So whatever software he uses, Logic or Reason, it sounds great. Seriously, go listen to the studio recording of this song Overtime. It's just as good as this live playing of the song in a corridor, but for very different reasons. It's almost like this live version was a cover of the song by a different band in a different genre, that's how different it sounds. But it's astonishingly good. There's even an album by the two Sams(Gendel and Wilkes), "Music for Saxofone and Bass Guitar" . It's very chill and understated compared to their other projects , but I adore it. One of my favorite albums to fall asleep to.

I'll speak up as a bass player, pedal enthusiast, and engineer: It sounds to me like he has a ring modulator (blended with dry signal) going into an octaver (lower octave) to get that sound. That combination gives it that very synthbass sound.
Louis has the sauce. The half time, to double time still gives me chills, even after dozens of listens. After I first heard that single kick pedal fill at the end of the double time section, I literally threw the second pedal of my double pedal away. I don't deserve it
I accidentally stumbled over Knower, and was absolutely blown away with the skill. I did a check and it turned out that they were touring, coming to England, so my brother and I got tickets so see them in Manchester. Oh my, they didn't disappoint. They were exceptional. This then lead to seeing Moonchild, then Louis Cole's solo show. Absolutely brilliant. Thing is, I'm 67 next October 2021, I'm a musician, and was as excited as a child to see these guys.

Just wanted to say thank you for keeping up with at least some modern music. I feel like a lot of people get locked into eras when it comes to music. So much of the draw ends up being nostalgia, when music is something that should always be moving forward. As a result there will always be misses, hits, & hidden gems. I strive to always find the hidden gems & show them some love.

Seeing them live would be absolutely fantastic. I can't see any reason why they couldn't return to here, to play in some of the jazz festivals here. The good thing about relatively small indie bands like Knower is that the tickets don't all sell out in about 3 seconds of them going on sale because of ticket purchasing bots doing it automatically, like a Taylor Swift concert or something (and actually I'd really love to go to a Taylor Swift concert too because she's ace, just absolutely brilliant songwriter, and she's named after my favourite move in the Pokemon series... I spent all of my teenage years only listening to rock and grunge and then brit pop when Oasis and Blur went toe to toe (I love them both, both bands are great but back then it was like you had to choose a side to fight the great britpop war). I absolutely HATED all pop music and hip hop and anything like that. These days I've stopped trying to look cool and I opened my mind end discovered that pop and hip hop are fucking ace in general. I missed out because all the chavs listening to this stuff and I didn't want to be labeled a chav. But I listen to any genre now. I even listen to Country. Cos I'm too old now to worry about whatever other people think of me. But yeah pop is amazing, and hip hop is amazing. I love Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, and others, and I'm hip hop I especially love A Tribe Called Quest, and Nas, a large part of that being that they used jazz music in their samples instead I something else, very few hip hop artists back then did that sort of thing. That's nothing new either. Back in the 70s, Led Zeppelin would "sample" other artists. But they just played it instead of using a recording. Like, everybody raves about how great John Bonham's drumming is on Fool In The Rain. But he's simply playing the exact same beat as the beat Bernard Purdie invented. And Bernard Purdie is definitely in the conversation for best drummer ever, his work with Steely Dan on the song Babylon Sisters is astonishing. Steely Dan kept trying different drummers, dozens of them, doing hundreds of takes for each, before letting them leave to bring in the next drummer because it just wasn't good enough. The eventually built the first ever drum machine which was a computer the size of a room that takes days to "render" a beat they've input. So eventually they call Bernard Purdie. And Purdie nails it in 2 takes. It's a legendary story in Jazz because of that. Two takes!? After every other drummer had hundreds!? That's why Bernard Purdie is maybe the best ever. I may be overstating it, but it kinda feels like a new branch on the tree of jazz just starting to form and take direction.

Adam Neely, who is a youtuber, but mainly is a full time musician, in bloomin NEW YORK CITY where even the buskers are world class musicians and you have to be something very special to play live paying gigs at proper indoor NYC venues, something beyond just simply being a world class musician, maybe call it a hyper class musician, anyway yeah his bands he plays in are all this stuff you mentioned. He's played things like a big gig with an orchestra playing video game music. He heavily uses electronic music devices to create extra sounds to fill out the general vibe and fill in certain gaps, for his main band called Sungazer, because it's a two man band. A drummer, and a bassist (Adam neely is the bassist, and seems to absolutely loathe playing a guitar, but he can still play it very well). So they'll have laptops on stage playing music parts, and the drummer Shawn Crowder has an electronic device on his drum machine that has like 10 different giant buttons on it that he's programmed to make certain sounds when the drumstick hits it, pretty much like how the drummer of Def Leppard managed to keep playing after he lost one of his arms in a car accident, and used a device very much like the one Shawn uses but just more primitive because it was made in the 80s obviously. But yeah between the two of them, each essentially playing two instruments each, they can fill out the sound using the electronic sounds and chords and so on, so they don't even need a guitar or keyboard player. I think Adam Neely wanted to prove guitars are unnecessary but that bass guitars are the best, because it's a sort of running joke with him. But yeah that's what modern jazz is. Sungazer are genuinely bloody amazing. And I've learned an incredible amount of stuff about music theory from his videos. I know he has a masters degree in jazz/music theory, but I believe he also went back and got a degree in teaching, not because he wants to work in a school in a classroom, but because he wanted to learn how to teach complex subjects about music in a way a layperson can understand. If you (you being anyone who's bothered to read my whole rambling unnecessary comment) want to learn a hell of a lot about music, and about showing what being a working musician who works and lives in NYC and also tours the whole country and even flies to other countries to play gigs. All those behind the scenes vlogs about the pros and cons of being a working professional musician is fascinating. But yeah his main type of videos are education about music theory and I've learned a lot. You never stop learning music. It's a futile life long goal to master it, like Sisyphus rolling the boulder up the hill for eternity. If you think you know everything there is to know about music theory, you're wrong. Because nobody does. The study of music theory just simply never ends it's like any other form of art. You have some artists literally on their deathbed, still painting paintings anyway. Because the pursuit of perfection of an art form is a lifelong process because we don't live for centuries. Perhaps, if we don't destroy the world via climate change, there'll be a star trek level of medical technology and humans will be able to live much longer. But that's a long way off. Immortality is probably impossible, and a few centuries of life would still not be enough time for one artists to learn everything there is to learn about their art form before they die
What’s funny is she doesn’t have a particularly strong voice at least from what I can tell here but she’s found her niche in this kinda fast almost spoken word style singing that her voice works really well in.
As a mediocre musician and massive Louis Cole admirer, it's so fun to see a professional musician discovering him for the first time and being as blown away as I still am every time I listen to this stuff. LC is the absolute greatest.
As someone who's been obsessed with knower since I first discovered them, it is so magnificent watching a proper musician just emote at how sick their stuff is. It's so fun.
It might interest you to know(er) that Rai (the keyboard player) is also (and probably more notably) the guitarist/vocalist for a fairly well established Australian band called Thirsty Merc.
Yep ...been following these guys for a while. The keyboardist is an Aussie, and like me he is a grad from the Sydney Conservatorium Jazz course. He is also the lead vocalist/lead guitarist and songwriter of a successful Sydney pop band (Thirsty Merc)! What a freak!

finding louis cole and his knower project on youtube was like putting on an old pair of trousers and finding a £20 note in one of the pockets!! each musician is on point...and every minute of this video is entertaining...obvious to say but this is top tier music art!! the DIY approach is so relatable...wish there was more out there like this!!
The bass player may even have an old flange device hooked up to his pick up. This group is insane. I was just recently turned on to them by a friend who is a musician/composer that I used to record with as a vocalist. I love how they phase in reverb. And switch up to jazz fusion. Very tasty stuff.
It's interesting, the more I analyze this, the more production I hear Louis snuck in. There's some reverse reverb doubling on Sam's solos, stereo widening reverb on certain verse sections, etc. I think that extra production gives you the feeling of being at a live performance by enhancing the sound.

This is the BEST reaction I have ever seen. I don't know the terminology this fella is using but his face moves at the same time mine does. I see what the Americans call "stank face" at all the right moments. Cannot understate me vibing with this fella as if I'm showing it to a friend who gets it!
Oh yeah. While the popular music in the charts etc. is just a tragedy (one chords songs with 2 note melodies and stock beats from DAWs...) over here in the weird part of youtube we got the most amazing music ever recorded. These KNOWER live sesh videos are the most fun I ever had with music. They are truly inspiring. Every time I hear/watch something from them I have this urge in me to start making music to call up my buddy and do a jam session. Just great stuff.
This is my favorite band now! Btw, all of these musicians are conservatory trained musicians, make no mistake about it. Its the new wave people!! Oh and double bbttww...Genevieve is also a video producer, so she is heavey on the production of all of their videos in addition to vox. Amazing talent!
Knower and Louis Cole are fairly recent discoveries for me, and oh my god is this opening up new horizons ... I grew up on rock and sing opera professionally. Listening to Knower is humbling and magnificent.

Rai Thistlethwayte on the keys is a goddamn genius, if you havent heard him before, just go on a youtube bender, he has incredible piano/keyboard skills and a fantastic voice (he also goes by Sun Rai and was originally the frontman for the band Thirsty Merc)

He heavily uses electronic music devices to create extra sounds to fill out the general vibe and fill in certain gaps, for his main band called Sungazer, because it's a two man band. A drummer, and a bassist (Adam neely is the bassist, and seems to absolutely loathe playing a guitar, but he can still play it very well). So they'll have laptops on stage playing music parts, and the drummer Shawn Crowder has an electronic device on his drum machine that has like 10 different giant buttons on it that he's programmed to make certain sounds when the drumstick hits it, pretty much like how the drummer of Def Leppard managed to keep playing after he lost one of his arms in a car accident, and used a device very much like the one Shawn uses but just more primitive because it was made in the 80s obviously. But yeah between the two of them, each essentially playing two instruments each, they can fill out the sound using the electronic sounds and chords and so on, so they don't even need a guitar or keyboard player. I think Adam Neely wanted to prove guitars are unnecessary but that bass guitars are the best, because it's a sort of running joke with him.
But yeah that's what modern jazz is. Sungazer are genuinely bloody amazing. And I've learned an incredible amount of stuff about music theory from his videos. I know he has a masters degree in jazz/music theory, but I believe he also went back and got a degree in teaching, not because he wants to work in a school in a classroom, but because he wanted to learn how to teach complex subjects about music in a way a layperson can understand. If you (you being anyone who's bothered to read my whole rambling unnecessary comment) want to learn a hell of a lot about music, and about showing what being a working musician who works and lives in NYC and also tours the whole country and even flies to other countries to play gigs.
All those behind the scenes vlogs about the pros and cons of being a working professional musician is fascinating. But yeah his main type of videos are education about music theory and I've learned a lot. You never stop learning music. It's a futile life long goal to master it, like Sisyphus rolling the boulder up the hill for eternity. If you think you know everything there is to know about music theory, you're wrong. Because nobody does. The study of music theory just simply never ends it's like any other form of art. You have some artists literally on their deathbed, still painting paintings anyway. Because the pursuit of perfection of an art form is a lifelong process because we don't live for centuries. Perhaps, if we don't destroy the world via climate change, there'll be a star trek level of medical technology and humans will be able to live much longer. But that's a long way off. Immortality is probably impossible, and a few centuries of life would still not be enough time for one artists to learn everything there is to learn about their art form before they die

Yep ...been following these guys for a while. The keyboardist is an Aussie, and like me he is a grad from the Sydney Conservatorium Jazz course. He is also the lead vocalist/lead guitarist and songwriter of a successful Sydney pop band (Thirsty Merc)! What a freak!

finding louis cole and his knower project on youtube was like putting on an old pair of trousers and finding a £20 note in one of the pockets!! each musician is on point...and every minute of this video is entertaining...obvious to say but this is top tier music art!! the DIY approach is so relatable...wish there was more out there like this!!
The bass player may even have an old flange device hooked up to his pick up. This group is insane. I was just recently turned on to them by a friend who is a musician/composer that I used to record with as a vocalist. I love how they phase in reverb. And switch up to jazz fusion. Very tasty stuff.

It's interesting, the more I analyze this, the more production I hear Louis snuck in. There's some reverse reverb doubling on Sam's solos, stereo widening reverb on certain verse sections, etc. I think that extra production gives you the feeling of being at a live performance by enhancing the sound.

This is the BEST reaction I have ever seen. I don't know the terminology this fella is using but his face moves at the same time mine does. I see what the Americans call "stank face" at all the right moments. Cannot understate me vibing with this fella as if I'm showing it to a friend who gets it!
Oh yeah. While the popular music in the charts etc. is just a tragedy (one chords songs with 2 note melodies and stock beats from DAWs...) over here in the weird part of youtube we got the most amazing music ever recorded. These KNOWER live sesh videos are the most fun I ever had with music. They are truly inspiring. Every time I hear/watch something from them I have this urge in me to start making music to call up my buddy and do a jam session. Just great stuff.

Knower and Louis Cole are fairly recent discoveries for me, and oh my god is this opening up new horizons ... I grew up on rock and sing opera professionally. Listening to Knower is humbling and magnificent.
