Disagree. He is one of the very few who understood where he was going with his solo. The only genuinely shocked part by Shaun is when Corey started soloing with both hands. Shaun wasn't expecting that. But, if anyone knows Shaun's credentials and his work, he wasn't in awe. As a musician, when I first saw the keyboard solo, I was doing the same thing as Shaun. Which was watching Corey's hands, and figuring out where he was going to go. Of course, im on a much smaller level haha, but musicians do this.

Never forget, Larnell Lewis (drummer) was called into cover for their other drummer with something like 36 hours notice (it actually was likely less than that). He learned the entire album while on a flight to London on his way to record this. His playing is absolutely free of any ego at all. Every decision he makes is to support the rest of the band. Every little micro idea he plays with is done with absolute intention and focus. Cory is a god on the keys. Larnell knew how to match his intensity and bring it up. So great! He's also one of the nicest dudes on the planet.
Wow, Jared! What a compliment to Larnell -- "His playing is absolutely free of any ego at all!" For a creative artist that is very hard to pull off, but you encapsulated his humanity with the stroke of a keyboard!

Yes! I never heard of him til I saw the video where he plays Enter Sandman after a single listen. I was immediately hooked but then he spoke and i fell in love haha it’s obvious he is extremely down to earth and seems like an amazing person on top of his talent also.
He was offered a tour w Drake a bunch of years ago. He accepted, not really knowing much about Drakes tunes. When he got the tour tunes and started to listen to them, he realized he made a mistake. The lyric content was against his morals so he dropped out. Now that’s some serious morals. It made me respect him even more, beyond his skills as a drummer.
Larnell Lewis, the man playing the drum kit who is shown the most had to learn the parts for this performance over the course of his seven hour plane ride to Europe where this was taking place. They're all fantastic musicians but that really blew me away.
Fun tidbit about this info too is from an interview or bts scene with Michael League talking about how they were playing the songs without Larnell due to his cab being late or something. And while they were rehearsing the parts as a group without the drums they felt this would never work.
In comes Larnell who learned everything in sub-double digit hours and suddenly everybody felt the flow.

@Preston Garvey he is probably the drummer I look up to the most. his feel for groove is absolute, and his ability to combine aspects of metal, funk, jazz, and some EDM aspects into his drumming is insane. as a drummer my self, (who has been playing for 8 years, but only has been trying to get good for like 3-4 of them) I can only dream of getting as good as him one day.

On the Family Dinner 2 recording in New Orleans, he told me there were some 120 or so inputs. I imagine this was similar. The audience gets a very rough mix and it’s not all 120 inputs. Rest well Eric.

Listening to that keyboardist’s solo feels like listening to someone with an infinite vocabulary. You don’t know what they’re saying, but it sounds good, and you know just enough of the words to realize he is making sense. What’s more important is that you can tell, both by the reactions of the people in the room and by you, is that he pulled off something amazing. The gap between what I’m hearing and what I can understand is great, but I know I can shrink it with effort and time. Lots of effort. Lots of time. And maybe not even then, but damn it I’ll try.

Cory Henry is an Church Kid that was playing the B3 as a 4 year old. So his chops and fast runs is all soul. When I hear him play it really reminds me of Spain by Chic Corea
You don't need to force yourself too hard to understand music. It's not like decoding a poem. You should listen with your emotions.

I completely agree. what I really admire about ML compositions is how much of a back seat the bass takes! so many bass players who compose, basically write bass solos with some chords around them! I've bought so many crap "sideman" albums but ML really does "compose" (and the stuff he composes is fantastic!)

Audio tech here:
This entire album was performed live in a studio with a live audience as can be seen in the video. So there was a live-mix that occured for the audience listening along in their cans.
For the album though there was a seperate mix-and-mastering process for the eventual version that got released for the album and video.

@@ocbfdog No, it was not only the last take only on the album, I was at the 4th recording session, sitting right beside Larnell Lewis.. two nights with two sessions each.. They took the best 8 songs from whatever session, actually they had 12 songs iirc, so 4 dropped off the project.. On the DVD I am in the picture for 1 second in 'What About Me', you also can see Larnell wearing a white Adidas shirt in that song.
Nate Werth is the percussionist. Incredibly important member of the ensemble and extremely well respected in the industry.

I have never listened to anything like that before, though I am a big Tool fan. That was so enjoyable, all the musicians were virtuoso, but that guy on the keys was a fucking force of nature!

I usually like classic rock and metal or whatever, but I've been listening to these guys for a couple months straight and you just can't deny the freaking greatness. I guess I listen to jazz now.. This is a gateway band..

Larnell Lewis is a monster on the kit. He’s done some stuff with Drumeo where he listened to a fusion piece once and played it flawlessly. He listens to something he needs to play and visualizes himself playing the song as he listens, then he takes notes, and then executes.

Me too! I love caldera, discovered them through Earth Wind and Fire because Larry Dunn was with both bands and they just rock!
I figured most Caldera fans would be passed on by now :) Totally dig them and I feel that Snarky Puppy is carrying on the spirit of bands of that time.

What's kind of amazing to me, about 3/4 of the way thought it's almost like he's going to flame out. He brings some thematic stuff back in different parts that tie it together. And the way he finishes it off is so slick. The early part of the solo has some real delicious melodic sequencing too, just brilliant.
Love the reaction and the insights from you as a composer! Snarky Puppy is "led" be Michael League (the bass player) and he composes most of their music. He is a true visionary for sure. May I suggest, since you enjoy the brass solos, for your next Snarky Puppy reaction that you do Shofukan or Kite from the same session? I think you will really appreciate either one and I would be very interested to hear your thoughts. Keep up the very interesting / educational videos! They are great!

A fourth vote for the staggeringly superb Shofukan, but may I suggest the North Sea Jazz Festival version with the Metropole Orkest, rather than the one from this session? Loved seeing your reactions to this amazing ensemble, and it was fascinating to hear your commentary - thanks!
Not taking away from your quality of analysis (because it was absolutely excellent and possibly one of the best on RUclips), but I think the amount of views all of these "Lingus reaction videos" get within a month or so of being uploaded is a true measure of how great this piece of music is. It shows that there is a massive group of people eager to see other people enjoy this song as much as they have.
Snarky Puppy has made many, many incredible songs over the years, but Lingus has by far the most mass popularity of any of them by the looks of it. I think there are many elements that make it brilliant: the solo, the percussion, the horns, the arrangement, the mixing and every player in the band individually. Somehow all of these elements combine together to make a TEN MINUTE LONG MODERN JAZZ FUSION SONG have over 20 million views on RUclips. This shows that this piece of music has reached a monumental level in popularity, and has managed to bring fusion to the masses.
The song was released in 2014, so it is by no means old at all, but I personally would call it a classic, and possibly one of the greatest pieces of jazz fusion (or even jazz) of all time.
Random ramblings aside, my other favourite piece by the band is "The Curtain", a piece that they did on an album with the Metropole Orkest that showcases a fusion between modern funk, jazz, rock and orchestral music. If you were looking for another Snarky Puppy piece to react to later on, I feel like this would be a good one to listen to.
Anyway, thank you for this video, I have watched too man of these reaction videos to this particular song, but I still gained a lot from your analysis.

A little thing I love here is how clearly we get to see that music really is a language. My guy here is listening to the story that composer is telling and nodding his head because he completely understands, and he raises his eyebrows at any interesting bits of the story. Just an interesting story between two great orators.

I absolutely love these insights man. I have played music my whole life (one of those kids drumming and tapping feet in every setting) and I have always had so much fun in that, and my ear for music has been heavily trained as result. I have NEVER dabbled in music theory, and in adulthood that has left me feeling extremely incomplete as a wanna-be musician. I'm taking the long way around to say, your input mirrors allot of my thoughts when I heard these pieces first too. Your input has helped me understand something so damn profound. I am a musician, who has never learned the language. Somewhere my soul understands what my mind cannot articulate. You helping me understand this, is a very big deal to me. Thank you man! To feel on the same frequency when digesting music, as someone with your accolades, it makes me not feel like a hack anymore. Knowing how to jam, without knowing a single chord has huge potential to make someone feel absolutely moronic in the presence of professionals.

I've played drums in senior year high school, but there is so much theory I now painfully know I'm lacking. “Reaction” had everything to do with the viral success of the Lingus video. Seeing the people freaking out in the studio has a profound psychological effect that makes you feel as though you are really witnessing something. Meanwhile, it is a phenomenal solo.

I'm a Tool fan too, but I've been listening to Snarky Puppy for years. Good music to vibe to comes in many flavors. I hope you listen to a few more of their tracks. If you want something else instrumental, "We like it here" off this same album is outstanding. If you want something with lyrics, "Gone Under" is a huge piece.

Caldera, eh???? I've got Sky Islands sitting downstairs from who know how long ago with another 2,600 of it's brothers and sisters! I always had a affinity for fusion since the early 1980's. The musicianship was always other worldly as was most of the song writing. Flash forward to earlier this year when I found out about Snarky Puppy and oh my!, oh my! Absolutely loving your articulate reactions!
I think the best part of this whole set is the fact that Larnell Lewis learned the composition of all the songs he played while he was on the plane to the gig. This man is amazing beyond description....

In regards to the “live to DVD” concept, if you went to any of ther live shows in 2019 they gave out thumb drives with direct downloads from the live mixed show within minutes of the show being out. So they have a lot of success in this idea of direct mix downs. But yes this was also clearly mixed down in post.
As a percussionist who has played in a band and did a live recording like these snarky recordings, I feel so seen right now!

Love seeing one of the greatest songs (in my opinion) again through another persons eyes and ears. Especially when that person knows about music and is as respectful and entertaining as you.
The first time I heard SNARKY PUPPY was 6 months ago and it was LINGUS. I was AWE struck at the talent and sound. I am a true jazz lover and by far my favorite. When I'm a little low or need a pick me up, I listen to them. Their best song yet is their latest called TRINITY. Which is from their new album coming out in September and I seen the video from that song and it's all their great playing over their career put into one song. I didn't think they could get any better but they did. IT made me emotional. Amazing!

As a polyrhythm/polymeter fan who's done a tool video in addition to this, you might really enjoy analyzing Meshuggah!!! I think your composer mind would freak out at what they do! Bleed is the most often recommended song, but I think Clockworks is a great recent track to get into. They are ridiculous prog metal gods with a love for jazz fusion stuff!

Re: listening to the brass section solos as a guitarist. One of the best pieces of advice I ever got from a guitar tutor was “try playing a sax solo on guitar”.

"J" and "L" jump farther than the arrow keys.
When paused, "" move one frame at a time.
@@ChadHadsell J and L and 10 seconds forwards/backwards, arrow keys are 5 sec and "" keys are one frame.
*PRO TIP:* Press left arrow key once to quickly and more easily go back 5 seconds.
Also, if there's ever a need for it: to examine a video frame-by-frame, pause the video and use , and . keys.

Throughout the tune you refer to the percussionists on occasion. That brought to mind Pierre Moerlen's Gong and their take on fusion where percussion took the lead. Moerlen was the drummer for Gong and this was his turn at re-fashioning the Gong name. Try the first LP, Gauzeuse! where Alan Holdsworth is the guest gunslinger on this release. The music is like nothing you've ever heard! Give 'em a shot!

Pretty sure it was mixed again later as you said, but there were no overdubs/retakes or anything like that. All of the effects were done live too.
The sound is pretty close to what you would hear at one of their live shows. I think you might dig the feel of their version of Don't You Know (ruclips.net/video/eqY3FaZmh-Y/видео.html) with Jacob Collier who is another freak of musical nature himself. He might be another interesting rabbit hole for you to dive into if you aren't already familiar with him.
If you are looking for something really interesting on the "rap" side, check out Run the Jewels, Thursday in the Danger room off the RTJ3 album. The depth of all of their music is pretty amazing. Lots of production things going on.

Put a bucket load of musical geniuses in a room and this is what happens. Shofukan is my personal favourite from this session, it's dirtier and funkier sounding, even more to my taste. No slouches in this group, you are correct when you praise the percussionist, he's amazing. Really enjoy your reactions and insights.

Yea, that is cool. I was at the first Family Dinner recording. They hand out headphones to everyone. If you don't have them on you can only hear the instruments close to you.

At least here in the US, this system is available for sale/rent for any performance. The shows are surreal. All instruments are plugged in direct, so the only ambient sounds are horns, drums, and the actual guitar strings and keyboards keys. ( foot tapping )headphonedisco.com/

I've thoroughly enjoyed experiencing your reaction, the way you got into the "how" and "what" of not just the notes being played but of the soul being pulled up and expressed by the musicians and those observing the taping. This is a treat to become aware that an engineer possesses this trait and I'd allow that a session with you present would be MAGIC! Play on, my man! Play on!

Cory Henry's performance is too good that you get lost in it. As you rightly mention, the performance of the percussion and in general the rhythm section is amazing as well - especially that drummer Larnell Lewis.
I would enjoy seeing your reaction to "Ocean" by John Butler. The 2012 version. Its an amazing song, different style than what you've been reacting to, but I would love to hear your thoughts!
