  • The 2018 season is coming to an end in Arctic Norway. We went out hoping to find some fish to fill the freezer before winter, but ended up with the biggest halibut we have ever seen! 129,5 kilo / 285 lbs spearfished by Ole!! Fish of an absolute lifetime! Good teamwork and experience wins the race!
    The legal limit of landed halibut in Norway is 200cm, and this one was 199cm, making it the biggest legal fish we could possibly catch!
    Be advised that we scream like adult kids, so loud voices and bad words do occur xD

  • @jc13781
    @jc13781 4 года назад +1

    This video highlights many aspects of how poorly managed Norway’s fisheries are. In Alaska you are only allowed to take few halibut of this size, and there are many very large halibut as a result. I certainly don’t blame the fisherman for this, and the video was great, but it is sad that Norway does not do more to manage the fishery.

    • @eirikhagen5512
      @eirikhagen5512 3 года назад

      Tf you mean. Norway is the country with the best fish management in the whole world. Every fisherman have a max limit they can take each year. The amount Of cod in our oceans are the same it was 50 years ago. We know what we are doing.

    • @jc13781
      @jc13781 3 года назад +1

      @@eirikhagen5512 not even possible. For one cod travel far, they don’t stay in one place. So how could you have the same amount from 70 years ago? Second compare the numbers. You allow salmon farmers to poison your waters and then you remove the largest fish from your waters in high numbers.

    • @bogi2557
      @bogi2557 3 года назад +1

      @@jc13781 Right now we actually do have a problem with cod and halibut, so the minimal size has been changed so that cod under 40 cm have to be released, and halibut under 80 cm have to be released. For cod it has nothing to do with fishery though. Although the fewer halibut might be because of fishery. But dont Get me wrong, we are managing the fishing better now.

      @arcticspearfishing4265  5 лет назад +3

      When we pratice the most sustainable fishing metod known to mankind, we take the prey we find, if its in the legal limit. We manage our hunting grounds carefullly. We feed ourself and others. Bigger halibut demand more skills in the kitchen. Nothing is wasted and sad about that. Go focus your sadness on the commerical fishing industry. Probably no one that care as much for a healty halibut stock as we do.

      You got the law wrong there. Its only apply to length. 200 cm . This one was 198 cm and 129 kg due to caught late in the season and had great condition. There is no law that regulates fish after weight in Norway which make sense when you spend a second thought on it.

      In you first comment you refer to the maximum regulation. This regulation is based on a report from the Norwegian
      Food Safety Authority. Now you go against this report by claiming that fish between 150-200cm are full of toxin. The report concluded that halibuts up to 200 cm are save eating and not dangerous and toxic. I accept that you like the catch and release thing, its not my game at all. But pls remember to get your facts right before claiming stuff. Makes you look a bit better in future debates.

    I don't understand why people kill fish this big. The bigger and older the worse the eating quality is. And if it's a mother fish, then the biggest ones produce a lot of quality offspring. So killing a halibut this big can have consequences on the amount of halibuts in the future. Honostly I think that's the reason why some countries ban spearfishing intirely. Sincerely a fellow spearo

    Hey guys. Congratulations for this Queen of the seas. I’ve fished for kveite from shore for quite some time and have a lot of respect for your catch. One mystery remains for me: how could you estimate this fish‘s length so accurately before shooting her? I am sure you would not have shot her had she been 201cm... skit fiske!

    • @arcticspearfishing4265
      @arcticspearfishing4265  5 лет назад +2

      Thanks :) We thought it was around 190 cm and around the 90 kg mark. Its hard to measure the exact size of these fishes. You can never be 100 % sure but we have developed some eyemeasurement over 5 years of hunting this fish. We aim to never end up in a situation with shooting a halibut over 200cm ,its not illegal but it would be a great waste since the regulation says that caught halibut over 2 m cant be taken back to land. Needs to be released in its current state. If its deadly injured its need to be killed and thrown back in. Luckly encounter with fish over 200 cm are rare while spearfishing. From 5 years of hunting this fish we have just seen a few over 200 cm. Note! The regulation has nothing to do with population/reproduction, its because of possible risk of high levels of mercury and other stuff that can be found in top predators.

    When you know these fish can grow up to 130kgs ,why would you hunt a 25kg one...

      Blue because 130 is way too big to eat, it tastes like shit. 20-30 is perfect food size. u also shouldnt kill 130 kg halibuts because u avmt to anything other with them than throw them away.

    Very nice fish, but Shoot it right behind the pectoral fin into the heart instead of wasting the cheek meat with 3 spears straight through it

      @@jali640 You sure? If you go for the brain it can’t Even process What’s going on because it has a spear going through its head. Going for the heart will just make it bleed to death. It isn’t gonna be any faster going for the heart. It doesn’t instantly die.

      You get them this big in the uk too but for the big ones like this you have to go to north of scotland to thurso or west of shetland islands where these size fish are rod caught every year.
