It's not about pedophilia guys. When a woman finds a man that can be ALL she needs because she did not have a true Father figure in her life, this man takes that place in her life. Unfortunately, there are a LOT of people searching for that unconditional love they never had. It's not meant to be "weird", it's meant to be reassuring for her that she can be ALL she can be because he will be everything she needs - emotionally. 💗
It's still creepy. It makes me think of my niece, who was s*xually abused by her stepfather from the ages of 12-14 and then ended up getting pregnant at 17 by a guy 4 years older than her who she described as being like a father figure to her. Although I found the lyrics to this creepy long before that.
One of the calling cards of a great songwriter, a talent George Michael possessed in spades, is having the ability to pen lyrics that are nuanced. The song “Father Figure” is a declaration of unconditional love and a promise that I’ll be all you need if you’ll just open your heart to me. The title and lyric ‘father figure’ isn’t meant to be taken literally, it’s a metaphor. “Father Figure” is an absolute classic!
George Michael sang Somebody to Love with Queen during a tribute to Freddie Mercury after he died. He did an amazing job. It’s definitely worth a listen.
George's version is AMAZING! He made the song his own and always get the chills when I watch the video!! Freddie was looking down and smiling when he was doing it!
It’s so so good. It was released as part of short LP and as a single, where it even got Queen on the charts in the US. It got tons of airplay during the age of Nirvana. It gave me goosebumps every single time I heard it. ❤️
In his documentary Freedom he tells that at that Live-Aid performance he recently found out that his lover also had HIV. So George Michael had to sing about having someone to love, on a tribute to someone who died of HIV-Aids, while having just found out his lover is probably going to die soon.......
When George went solo, nobody was expecting this unique sound from him. His debut album was such a departure from the Wham! vibe and that was what made him so fabulous!

He won several song writing awards and was honored by being the most played artist for 20 years straight on British radio. There's a reason this man has sold over a hundred and twenty million records.
When he says, "the eyes of a child", he means, without the cynicism of an adult who is expecting to be lied to and hurt. Also, "sometimes love can be mistaken for a crime", you'd have to remember that at this point, he wasn't out as gay, which is still a crime in some places, sadly.

This song is about a lover that is constantly seeking their fathers approval. Someone that isn’t being true to themselves. It’s about a love that can’t be open because their lovers father sees their love as a crime. He’s telling his lover that if they crave a father figure, a preacher, or a teacher that he can be all those things. He’s telling his lover that they don’t need the validation of their father for them to love. It’s all there in the lyrics. This was personal for GM.
Michael's album "Faith" is one of the best albums of the 80's and one of the finest displays of talent ever. I love the songs, "Monkey", the title track and "Kissing A Fool".

Amber for Female Friday check out Aretha Franklin’s duet with George Michael “I Knew You Were Waiting”. For J looking for an uptempo track, George’s massive hits “Freedom 90”, “Fastlove” or his first big hit as a solo artist “Faith”. He covered Elton John’s track “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me” and Elton was in the live concert video version of the song duetting with George while playing piano. My goodness, you guys are at the beginning of diving into George’s catalog! His collab with Queen on “Somebody to Love” is amazing and “Monkey” is pure 80s dance/pop at its best. The crowds were wild for him and after dancing my tush off all night, I was thoroughly spent by the end of those shows!!😅❤😊

This is George’s BEST SONG of All Time. Great choice. The depth the producer went to for this song is immense. The selection of instruments with the choir is an absolute masterpiece. Next up… ONE MORE TRY. Another really good song
You guys are hilarious. This was such a great album. It stamped his departure from Wham and made him a huge star. Kinda Justin Timberlake-ish. He has a fantastic voice. "One More Try" was another song in this vein that was a hit. Amber will love and Jay will hate, lol!
One his his best and most atmospheric songs, along with ‘Jesus to a child’. The lyrics have depth and can be misinterpreted. The Gospel influenced chorus is genius. There was always much more to George than the simple singalong pop compositions of Wham. R.I.P ❤❤
Another George Michael masterpiece. What an incredible talent - the UK equivalent of Prince. Great song writer, played all the instruments and boy, what a voice. Taken from us far too early
There was a time when we had singers with looks and talent. They could honestly sing very very well. These folks didn’t have to be half naked or talk about their sex lives to sell records. George Michael was one of these folks. This song is over 35 years old and still sounds fantastic and downright timeless.
He's an amazing talent, but he did write I Want Your Sex, Freeek, and other highly sexual songs both as part of Wham! and as a solo artist. Indeed, I Want Your Sex was banned by radio stations and the BBC. MTV would only play it after Prime Time. In the 80s and 90s, we were highly amused by it. The man is a great artist.
@@kitskivich LOL. Don’t get me wrong he wrote some really sexual songs. But he was never telling all of his sexual business like folks are today. Even after it came out that he was gay, dude still kept his personal life personal. After he passed away, I remember hearing many people came forward to talk about all of the private acts of charity and kindness he had performed over the years. He did the right things for folks because it was the right thing to do. That’s what I what I was saying. Nowadays we find out far too much about celebrities outside of their area of talent.
He wrote a hit song after being arrested for reasons in a mens toilet, so yes he did make use of his sex life to sell a record. Although it more to exploit the publicity of the arrest than boast about what happened.
George is one of the best. You can't go wrong with songs from his Faith album. It won many awards in including the AMA R&B album of the year. Also, he did several duets with strong female voices, Aretha, Mary J and Whitney!
Guys, maybe to understand what the father figure has to do with the song, you would need to dig a bit in psycology and what influences our choice of partners during our entire life. Hint: Oedipus complex to start. Only a genius like GM could bring this kind of subject to a song. It is not for nothing that he’s know as one of the best songwriters of last century. Not to mention that his vocals absolutely kills.
I honestly believe a lot of them were about men but he cloaked it well. Teacher, etc. until he finally was outed and handled that spectacularly well. I love fast love/older.
George Michael was a SUPER talent! Incredibly gifted singer, musician & performer. He & Wham were part of my childhood songbook. He was phenomenal live but regrettably I never saw him perform 😕✌️You should check him out doing a live performance of "Killer/Papa Was a Rolling Stone"...
You don’t do enough George Michael. His last album - Patience - was priceless. Listen to Precious Box - probably my favourite song of his. It’s a long track but is an extremely poignant and haunting story of isolation, loneliness and shallow and rampant excess. This is one of George’s most up tempo and danceable tracks but that belies the song’s darkness and melancholy. It’s very frothy but deep. It’s very 2000s, with its house and electronic vibe. John and Elvis are Dead is a wonderful tribute track, along with Amazing.
George is one of those artists that the lyrics are everything. Especially the ones he wrote. If there's not an interest in deep diving into a song, I'm not sure it'll be appreciated.
This song😢😂 I had moved across country to be with my bf then he went off the rails, so here I was in a strange state & knew no one... he comes to the diner I worked at to win me back, flowers & a card and said HE wrote this for me... even changed blue eyes to green🤣 I was so emotional & bowled over by the LYRICS, I took him back hahaa When this song hit the airwaves, I gave him grief relentlessly, but hey, it was sweet at the time!😉❤✌ Edit: I see a lot of people got the creeps from this song's lyrics lol I never took it that way, but then again, he did NOT include "I'll be your daddy" in the written note🤭✌
George is up for public nomination to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. A great voice and undeniable talent who deserves to be there with the other greats. You can vote for him at the Hall of Fame Web page.
You guys are weirded out by the sentiment he’s conveying, and that’s exactly the point, it’s supposed to be uncomfortable. The relationship isn’t built together as a partnership, he wants to be the only one to build it, the father figure. This is probably the best song he’s ever written, so poetic and heartbreaking.
I know that some people find the use of the term "Father Figure" weird - but I personally don't think George was singing about a relationship between someone older and younger. I think it was more of nurturing relationship - taking care of another person as someone "sacred".
One of my favorite songs. Can’t imagine ANY woman that wouldn’t find this song incredibly sensual/sexy. RIP George. Another great talent gone too soon.
Sometimes hearing songs over and over as teens we don’t catch everything. Like with this, I heard the “I’ll love you forever” and just assumed it went both ways. George had a beautiful voice. And wrote great songs.
Father Figure is one of the first songs I heard from George Michael maybe a decade ago. It's such a unique song and he hooks you the minute you hear the music and his voice. I did a deeper dive on George Michael after hearing this and have been a huge fan ever since.
I don't usually care for very many slow songs, but this video was incredibly produced and played massively on MTV, so I actually like it now. Thanks to both of you for your excellent entertainment and reactions. It makes my day almost every day!
George Michael was so talented. He had a lot of great songs, which many have been mentioned here in the comments. I think you two would love his version of “I can’t make you love me” You two have reacted to Bonnie Raitt’s version but George brings something special to the song. Please check it out!
Father Figure is my favorite George Michael song. I love the sinewy, sensual aspect of the music and little keyboard phrase in the minor key. The song has an aura of mystery about it. The title is not to be taken literally. Since I Am not a parent I never considered that point of view. The singer is a wise and gentle soul who is in love with someone who has suffered and been betrayed, who is therefore fragile. Reluctant. He is offering safety, faithfulness and stability, which are qualities one might find in a father figure. Someone who will create something warm and sacred. He conveys this with the light and breathy delivery of the lyrics in the verses. He's attempting to encourage rather than deduce. It's quite beautiful. My other favorites from that era were Faith and the spectacular Freedom 90 whose video was a sensation. Also there's I Knew You Were Waiting, a duet with Aretha Franklin.

One of my favorite GM songs. It picks up so much in the bridge I just LOVE it.
Uggh...what a song. What a voice. Such an artist. This is a great album. This song is poetry in music.
Miss him.

Blue eyed soul at its BEST...this song takes you to church....GEORGE MICHAEL was a beautiful soul
This is George’s BEST SONG of All Time.
Great choice.
The depth the producer went to for this song is immense. The selection of instruments with the choir is an absolute masterpiece.
Next up…
ONE MORE TRY.
Another really good song
It's great, my vote goes to careless whisper.
@@jamesway they've reacted to Careless Whisper and loved it. Check it out.
@@jamesway Careless Whisper is a Wham song. This is George Michael solo…and Father Figure is his absolute best.
@@GNXXRAY Ah, yeah. Gee Thanks for the update.
One More Try runs rings around Father Figure. George's voice is so much more powerful and haunting in that song.
George mochael = heavy weight pop music. A class on his own. We are on the top. All his song should be known.
You guys are hilarious. This was such a great album. It stamped his departure from Wham and made him a huge star. Kinda Justin Timberlake-ish. He has a fantastic voice.
"One More Try" was another song in this vein that was a hit. Amber will love and Jay will hate, lol!
I LOVE this song. I remember listening to this on repeat when it came out. His Faith album was a favorite.
George's "Fastlove' will get you grooving!
Jay would freak out with the video for that one! 😂😂😂
THAT'S CALLED ART WITH EMOTIONS! IT CAN BE WHATEVER THE VIEWER PERCEIVE IT TO BE.
One his his best and most atmospheric songs, along with ‘Jesus to a child’. The lyrics have depth and can be misinterpreted. The Gospel influenced chorus is genius. There was always much more to George than the simple singalong pop compositions of Wham. R.I.P ❤❤
Being a "Father Figure" means he will be her 'everything' like a father is to his daughter when she is little.
George Michael and Aretha Franklin, I Knew You Were Waiting.
You’ll love it!!❤
Another George Michael masterpiece. What an incredible talent - the UK equivalent of Prince. Great song writer, played all the instruments and boy, what a voice. Taken from us far too early
One of my favorite songs by GM.
I love this song! No creeps felt here! 🤣
I think it's the best song he ever had done
George Michaels video's made the supermodels into household names.
Although he did sing "I Want Your Sex" lol
What do you think he would write about today? Trash, just like then.
My absolute favorite George Michael song. Very deep, love the Egyptian nuance.
George is one of the best. You can't go wrong with songs from his Faith album. It won many awards in including the AMA R&B album of the year. Also, he did several duets with strong female voices, Aretha, Mary J and Whitney!
George was an absolute legend so sorely missed RIP
Guys, maybe to understand what the father figure has to do with the song, you would need to dig a bit in psycology and what influences our choice of partners during our entire life. Hint: Oedipus complex to start.
Only a genius like GM could bring this kind of subject to a song. It is not for nothing that he’s know as one of the best songwriters of last century. Not to mention that his vocals absolutely kills.
I honestly believe a lot of them were about men but he cloaked it well. Teacher, etc. until he finally was outed and handled that spectacularly well. I love fast love/older.
Absolutely
What a wonderful voice and a great man! He definitely was a loss to the world and he could write and sing amazingly.
I think the inspiration could have been the many woman that have real "daddy issues".
George sings, writes, plays and produces his music. Bit of a genius
This song😢😂 I had moved across country to be with my bf then he went off the rails, so here I was in a strange state & knew no one... he comes to the diner I worked at to win me back, flowers & a card and said HE wrote this for me... even changed blue eyes to green🤣 I was so emotional & bowled over by the LYRICS, I took him back hahaa
When this song hit the airwaves, I gave him grief relentlessly, but hey, it was sweet at the time!😉❤✌
Edit: I see a lot of people got the creeps from this song's lyrics lol I never took it that way, but then again, he did NOT include "I'll be your daddy" in the written note🤭✌
Can you spell G R O O M E R ??? What the hell is admirable or normal about that?
E
😢
@Sandy Russel no different than a single mom giving all for her kids, world full of single mothers and we wonder what happened to men. GTFO
Stay away from kids
This song always puts me under a hypnotic spell. One of my FAVORITE GM songs. So much passion.
You don't understand how obsessed 13-year-old me was with this song 35 years ago. I warped my cassette.
He looked best around 30.
You should see a doctor about that.
Bet I do. Broken home? Couldn't tell anyone close to you? Bullying????
One of my all time favorite songs from any artist or genre. Gives me chills every single time I hear it
No matter what musical genre each of us prefers (mine is Heavy Rock) here in the UK we all loved George Michael.
