    The catchy song addressed his struggles with identity, artistic growth and stardom in a meaningful way. And because Michael refused to appear on-camera, the song ended up with an iconic music video that brought the worlds of fashion and entertainment together. Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and Tatjana Patitz all top supermodels of the time.

    As a gay teenager when this first dropped I was completely taken with the lyrics of the song especially after George finally came out of the closet I completely understood what the words meant when he says things like there’s some thing you should know there’s something I should’ve told you in addition to just wanting his freedom from the record company and from the image they had built around him he was tired and ready to be his Person. Oh George 😢 Still can’t believe he’s gone, such a talent.
    This video makes more sense if you’ve seen Faith. The leather jacket, guitar & jukebox all feature in Faith when Sony were trying to keep him as a sexy pop boy but he wanted to be so much more. So in Freedom 90 all those items get blown up to symbolise that George wasn’t going to be that anymore, he wasn’t even going to be in his own videos. For Freedom 90 the top supermodels of that era were used instead.
    David Fincher directed it and he also did Madonna’s Vogue, Christina Aguilera’s Dirrty and would later make lots of Hollywood movies like Fight Club & Se7en.

    It’s amazing to me that while George didn’t want to be a “pretty face” anymore- he ushered in the decade of the supermodel. It was no small feat getting all these ladies in one video ( almost all of them worked for different agencies ) they all appeared on a British Vogue cover together, and that’s what inspired George to use them. BTW the ladies were paid four times more than the men in this video ( and the guys were asked to do a day of reshoots for free ). The reason for the “Freedom 90” title was to not confuse the song with Wham’s! “Freedom”. Also- this video was directed by David Fincher, and Claudia Schiffer ( also one of the biggest models of the 90’s ) was asked to participate- but, her agent very flatly said “No”. The lineup of models was repeated on the Versace runway the same year and is considered a milestone moment in fashion!!

    • @JanS1
      @JanS1 2 года назад +9

      These models appeared in many shows together over the several years that they prevailed as the first (and only, IMO) "Supermodels" in fashion. They were already very famous when they did this video. George had seen them on a British Vogue cover together and because he didn't want to be photographed or filmed himself at the time, he knew instantly that he wanted that exact group of women for the video. The music, the video, now iconic.

    • @joelscottarnold3262
      @joelscottarnold3262 2 года назад +4

      @@JanS1 - I share your opinion about the “Supermodels” title 100%.

    • @SunsetRogue
      @SunsetRogue 2 года назад +14

      To clarify some things: Christy Turlington was signed with Ford Models. The other four were with Elite Models. Tatjana Patitz did not appear at the Versace Autumn '91/Winter '92 show, which left Linda, Cindy, Naomi, and Christy to lip-sync the song on the runway. I was a '90s kid. I don't know about now, but modeling and porn were the only industries where women were paid a lot more than the men. The supermodels deserved every penny because they generated as much attention as movie stars and were very profitable for designers. Male models were often used as accessories in the fashion world. Amazing song, amazing video and it's no surprise why Freedom still holds up.

    • @joelscottarnold3262
      @joelscottarnold3262 2 года назад +5

      @@SunsetRogue - oh- they deserved the money without question. The fact that billions were made with their image in the 90’s in print, television and fashion shows- the salaries were more than well deserved. I was an 80’s/90’s guy myself. I remember the Versace show well, and knew it was “the trinity” with Crawford- but, it was also cementing the marriage of pop culture with the fashion/modeling world. These girls became the 90’s in all it’s glory, and I, as many gay men did- ate it up with a spoon. Rebecca Davies got all the agencies on one schedule , and the rest is HISTORY.

    • @ashleydixon4613
      @ashleydixon4613 2 года назад +7

      The use of supermodels (several of which were his friends) instead of him-his pretty face- was more ironic than a lot of people realize. Using individuals who are paid for their looks and their ability to often model some of the most ridiculous clothing from avant-garde designers-and having to try to make it look good...
      The models were completely representing him when he was still under the thumb of the music industry and exactly what they wanted out of him.

    This was George's FU to the record company that "owned him" by contract. He had all of these supermodels (who were also in similar contractual situations) lip-sync the song for him. The burning of the jacket and the blowing up of the jukebox were references to him moving away from iconic images of previous videos (that were huge hits for him under his contracts).

      Amen! This was George Michael's emancipation song. The lyrics brilliantly describe how he no longer wanted to be a pop music pretty boy and wanted to express himself more. And I think its so smart that he gave 'the finger' to the music industry by refusing to appear in the video and instead had "prettier face" supermodels lip sync his vocals.

    • @martyboy5602

      Strange, he kept all the money he made from the record company and the industry he said FU to....don't get me wrong, I think the song/lyrics are brilliant, and powerfully done, and I understand how manipulative his handlers and the industry could be -- but he was a willing participant and equal partner.

He blows up the jukebox and guitar from the Faith video, burns the leather Faith jacket and refuses to appear in this video so uses the world's top supermodels to lip sync in the video. He's rejecting fame and manufactured images and says it's time for him to get "some happy". Iconic, legendary and classic.

      They all started and began their careers the early to mid-1980s and became Supermodels around 1988. "By the late 1980s, Campbell, Turlington and Evangelista, formed a trio known as the "Trinity", who became the most recognizable and in-demand models of their generation.
      Evangelista started her career in 1984 and was well-known on the runway working for Karl Lagerfeld and Gianni Versace. She became world famous in 1987 as the face of Revlon's "The Most Unforgettable Women in the World" campaign.
      Campbell's fame started when she got on the cover of British Elle in 1986 as a 16 year old. She did catwalk's for Isaac Mizrahi and Gianni Versace. She was the first black woman to be on the cover of French Vogue since 1966 in 1988.
      Crawford signed with Elite modeling agency in 1986 and covered many magazines such as Cosmopolitan and Vogue. She did runway work for Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana. By 1988, she did a shoot for Playboy magazine.
      Turlington began modeling at the age of 14 in 1984. She's appeared on fashion magazines such as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Elle. She was also featured in advertising campaigns for Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan and Maybelline. At the age of 16 in 1986, she was featured in Duran Duran's Notorious video.
      Tatjana Patitz is also a supermodel featured in this video. She was also featured in Duran Duran's Skin Trade video in 1987. She began her modeling career at the age of 13 in 1983 and made her first major cover for British Vogue in 1985. In 1988, Patitiz made back-to-back American Vogue covers in July and August, which was a rare achievement for models. She did catwalks for Jean Paul Gaultier, and Vivienne Westwood.

    This was a definitive song for George in his attempt to free himself from the grip of the record company that had a choke hold on him. If you listen to the lyrics you start to comprehend they wanted him to fit a certain image, some of the items shown here, Jukebox, jacket and such were part of that image that had built his success. Also George was eye candy for the ladies in his appearance and had massive sex appeal but was actually a closet gay man behind the scenes. This song was a cry of wanting freedom from all of that. He honestly was an incredible talent and icon of the industry, and is still missed. Great reaction you two, all the best!

    Great choice! You guys were vibing so hard you missed some really great shots of the worlds first super models and some first rate creativity. This video was epic when it was released on MTV in 1990-George Michael telling his record company to stick it was big news. Hence the title, Freedom ‘90. Other people in the comments have already named the models, the most famous of which was Cindy Crawford. Those were the girls making $10k a day. Now do yourselves a favor and go back and watch the video again-with your eyes open! 😄

    One of my absolute favorite songs EVER. I compiled a Top 100 of all time in 2009, and this one was #10. The piano is phenomenal, the lyrics and their message is superb, and the video (which featured some of the world's most prominent supermodels of the time) perfectly highlights the exact point that George was trying to make. Even three decades later, it hasn't lost its punch or its poignancy. The reason it was called Freedom '90 is because, in the 80s, when George was in a pop duo called Wham!, they had a hit song also called "Freedom". But this one is all George. Thanks for reacting!

    OMG it broke my heart when George Michael passed away, fantastic artist. From his 1990 album Listen Without Prejudice, the 90 was added to stop confusion from Wham's previous song also named Freedom. For me personally, it's an iconic music video, Supermodels were absolutely huge in the '90s, paired with the fact that George didn't want to appear in the video due to artistic differences with his record company and setting fire to the things from the 1988 Faith video because it's not how he wanted to appear to his demographic just seals it for me.

    Can't go wrong with George Michael. Amazing vocalist and songwriter. Reluctant sex symbol who, for a period, refused to appear in his own videos.
    Featured here were the first wave of 90s supermodels who, although they walked hundreds of runways and were on countless magazine covers, will forever be remembered for this video.

    Such an important song and video to me. I was 18 at the time and not in a good place. Remember the first time I saw and heard this video. In a pub, in the afternoon in Hastings, UK, alone and very low. It hypnotised me, grabbed me and to this day 32 years later I am immediately taken back to that exact moment every time I hear or see this track and video. God bless you Michael and to everyone else, fight the daemons, it will get better.

  • @lindas2606
    @lindas2606 2 года назад +13

    I chuckled at Amber’s closing comment about the video bringing in people from “all walks of life.”
    No, Amber, it was one walk of life - 1980s-1990s Super Models. That’s it, Super Models. LOL
    George Michael had close ties within the fashion industry and the beautiful women who worked within it. Being gay he, no doubt, was comforting and non-threatening to these icons of fashion, the highest paid women in modelling - and they remained close friends with him until his death. They agreed to lip sync to this song particularly because it was an attack on the recording industry and his fight for artistic freedom within it - which is why he didn’t appear in the video - it was a protest.
    Happily, George did get to write, record and perform the music he loved which you’ll see in his later work when you get to it. It would be nice if you went through his catalogue of music in somewhat of a chronological order, and you will see the change and growth for yourselves. He was a remarkable artist and is dearly missed.

      At the time of making the video, the only model of the five in it that had met George Michael was Tatjana Patitz, who had met him several times at events prior. They weren't friends. As far as having close ties to the fashion industry at that time, I doubt it. The only fashion connection Michael had was seeing the cover of Peter Lindbergh's portrait of Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, Christy Turlington, and Cindy Crawford for the January 1990 cover British Vogue. Michael, not wanting to be in the video, was inspired by this cover and thought of the idea to have them be in it instead of him. From there, he had his management contact their agents.
