  • Tier 4 Final engine aftertreatment is a costly maintenance necessity, but the type of engine oil you use can significantly cut down on the hit to your wallet.
On this episode of The Dirt, we learn about Chevron’s ultra-low-ash engine oil from Keith D. Shaw, the company’s global OEM manager for the heavy duty truck and non-road section.
Shaw explains that the main culprit in dirty diesel particulate filters is ash left over from the engine oil. That’s because ash is a metal that does not burn off.
But with Chevron’s Delo 600 ADF ultra-low-ash heavy-duty engine oil, construction equipment owners are seeing two and a half times longer intervals on DPF changes, Shaw reports.
For that reason, he says, contractors should take a fresh look at their engine oil program, especially if they’re using the same product for the past 15 years or longer. It’s just not equipped for today’s diesel emissions aftertreatment systems, and it’s causing DPFs to require changing much sooner than they should.
To learn more about the importance of ultra-low-ash engine oil and how it can save you money and downtime, check out the latest episode of The Dirt.

Low ash oil might help, maybe even a lot. But the other main reason for a lot of soot in the oil and DPF is a lot of exhaust gas recirculation.
EGR lowers NOx, but it makes a lot black smoke doing so.
    It's called NOx/soot trade-off.
    Feel free to google it.
That's why on engines with an deleted EGR (While keeping the rest of the emissions system) the soot in the exhaust will decrease by a lot. The DPF will regen a lot less often and no more clogged up intake manifolds.

I have a 2010 Freightliner MB Sprinter 3500 camper van and have had DPF filter clogging problems.
Will the Delco 600 10W30 work in my van? Mercedes usually recommends MB 229.51 for my diesel van.

I just put it in a brand new 3500 duramax with 1500 miles on the clock so fingers are crossed that it delivers on its promises. I tend to take chevron product marketing claims seriously.

I would never in my life buy low ash oil, I use only full SAPS high ash oils for my 2001 audi a2 and 2002 bmw, both diesels. I would ruin them with low ash oil for sure.

DELO 400 was supposed to be a low ash and soot oil. I had a $5200 doc/dpf ckeaning etc, a year ago. I got one year, low miles, maybe 75k, and dpf full again. $1700 later, clean. Is it worth trying an even more expensive and harder to find DELO 600? Not sure.

My Sprinter dpf kept clogging up every year. I found out that deisel engines with dpf filters should not be idling too long. It leads to overaccumulation of soot that regen won't clean!

@davidg.johnson7208 Right, that's known, but sometimes you just need to idle. Unless, of course, one can afford to shell out 8-10K for a generator to avoid idling. Neh, I'm buying another pre-em or a glider kit.
