    I suppose then, there's a reason Imperial High Command decided that defender pilots would only be selected from TIE interceptor pilots who had flown at least twenty combat missions and survived.

    Counter argument.
    The TIE Defender can be useful in the right hands.
    B-wings seemingly can not. Thus, B-wings are the hardest to pilot.

      I personally like the b-wing. b-wings are slow however their boosters are powerful and can last a long time. drifting around makes up for the low maneuverability and heavy laser cannons are pretty powerful. they also have both laser and ion cannons. with rotary cannons and good aim with the assist of drifts, it can destroy any tie fighter within seconds

    Great video, but I would like to recall the game Star Wars: Tie Fighter. In it, Thrawn designed the Missile Boat as a powerhouse in its own right, but it was specifically designed to counter the threat Admiral Zaarin posed with his Tie Defender squadrons. As such, playing Squadrons with a load out designed to counter the T/D may be frustrating, but it is not without precedence backed up with lore.

    I didn't find it all that difficult to pick up because its shield based gameplay made more sense to me than always having your health dropping with few consistent regen options for Empire. Everything about it made sense to me, especially the switching of power and use of the APS (which is just used for shields like 80% of the time as your get out of jail free card). Sure I'm not GREAT with it, but it is by far the most intuitive and productive ship for me when I'm playing empire. I just wish you weren't absolutely dead as soon as your shields go down.

  • @shardell
    @shardell 3 года назад +1

    I picked the game up yesterday almost exclusively because I heard the tie defender was added, my favourite Star Wars ship by far, and I’ve found it relatively easy and fun and rewarding, power management came very easily to me and dead drifting is micro drifting and APS shield boosting is already in my muscle memory. I think it’s because I started off with it right off the bat so I quickly acclimated to the drifting and power management, probably making me a better pilot in all of the ships since they don’t seem to need to same level of power management and drift skill to operate. I’ve found the intercepter and A-wing to be by far the hardest to pilot. Sure they’re the fastest and most manoeuvrable, but they have such a slim margin of error and most of the time you’ll be too worried about surviving to really inflict a lot of damage. I know in a professional’s hand they’re the deadliest, but at least to me it’s just survival for the sake of surviving and not much attacking

    Another weakness of the TIE Defender which I think you didn't mention is that it's a really large target, especially compared to the other TIE's... even the TIE Bomber!
    I mean, I don't even play this game really, but it seems like the Defender is pretty well balanced. You really have to know what you are doing and constantly manage the systems without error, or you're superfighter is turned into a wreck by a passing B-Wing with power to weapons that simply saw you fly through his viewscreen and opened up with it's whole Laser and Ion cannon complement.
    If the Defender is so weak to Ion anything, maybe people should just load more Ion missiles instead of regular concussion missiles. If I understand this right, someone who selects Ion cannons for his fighter has ONLY those, no Lasers anymore... right?
    Well, maybe the fighters that actually had them, like the Y-Wing, B-Wing and the TIE Defender should just HAVE twin Ion cannons(slightly auto targeting Ions in the Y-Wings case, since they are in a forward fixed turret which used to be a full 360 degree manned defense turret) that can't be removed or replaced or otherwise messed with, end of story!
    Rather than "nerfing" the Defender, they should just make the Ion weapons, especially the cannons, a more attractive choice for the players to take... and also give the B-Wing something special that makes it more surviveable... an extra long boost for example.

    You didn't mention the aspect of boost gasping that actually makes the Defender OP. Yes, if you boost while power is in engines it depletes just as fast as it charges... but if you build up boost (which is fast) then you swtich power to guns or shields you can boost like crazy and now dead drift while your boost energy drains much slower and then as soon as your boost bar is getting low, just swtich quickly back to engines to fill it up super quick and rinse and repeat. Then add advanced power management to this (to completely remove power out of engines to make the dead drifts even more intense while also draining boost power less) to make the Defender GOD like. And THAT is why you see pro players using Defenders... add in some macros to make all of this SUPER EASY to do and that's the current problem we deal with today haha

      However, for something of a flying cross through space, not being able to turn seems a bit off don't you think? At the very least it should be able to turn at the rate of a Y or X wing. But ONLY the standard turn. It gets by just fine drifting, but right now B wing drifting is a crutch, not an augment. It may not supposed to escape without help, but it's not supposed to be helpless when trying to escape. Inn a way out could function like an A-10 Thunderbolt II. Even when flown well the Defender is an easy kill in an A-Wing. With the no damage while drifting bug gone they have nowhere to hide. The problem for the Defender is it’s huge profile that makes it easy to hit from any angle, especially side on.
    I run the reflect hull and rapid fire cannons. You sneak in and unload your guns then boost out beyond 1500m. If he is dead next target, if not rinse and repeat.
