- Go on board at Road Atlanta with Sean Johnston as he drives from the lead in the final race of the year for the Porsche IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama.
I could listen to that gearbox and flat 6 alllllll day! love it
this is the best suggestion i have ever heard!!! i really hope they do it!!!!!
nice to see everyone's getting along :P yes nascar oval tracks suck but circuits like laguna seca and willow springs are awesome, and i do love those straight cut gears :P when you hear one of these go past you can hear each gear being whacked in!
look at his hands, so relaxed, thats a sign of a experienced racer
I notice a few people have asked about the sequential dogbox. The clutch must be engaged for downshifts but not upshifts. Also, the driver appears to be slamming his foot down on downshifts because they are heel-toe shifting in most of the downshifts. Hope this helps.
Got to love those Porsche cars. Don't forget SearsPoint the old track with the carousel. My fastest time was 1:36 in a 125cc laydown gocart. 1:42 was average lap times. 1 hour endurance races. 75$ entry. I miss cheep thrills.
yea i've seen that video and a few others. that was one of the videos that came to mind when i thought of the new possible segment for Drive.
Man, he is nailing that clutch.
You must be kidding, right? The U.S. has some amazing tracks, not just ovals.
keep up the good work Sean.
You can, you just use the clutch to take load off the gearbox during testing etc. It's marginally slower, but 3 times less stress on the trans.
Love how hard he hits the downshift, it's like a gun shot every time he changes down.
can i make a suggestion? can we get a segment (maybe monthly or every other week) about how driving technology works? like this sequential manual. i'd love to see a well-produced video about how they work.
you can start with the basics like how turbos add power, how a torque converter or differential works, etc. but then get into the good stuff. this could give you an excuse to go to more factories (ZF transmissions in Germany come to mind). maybe some basic F1 tech too later on.
You can see that in many series. Last year in FIA GT1 or V8 supercars for example. But most drivers use clutch just out of habit. They say in V8 Supercars that fuel consumption is a bit better like that. They blip more with right foot for matching revs so more fuel consumtion that way. On the other hand, some drivers in cars equiped with paddle shifters use only right foot. Parente or Mackowiecki in FIA GT1 2012 on McLaren does that, not sure who exactly. Even Rubens Barrichello in F1.
sure sounds like a turbo spooling up. does this class use turbos?
A few good tracks??? Road Atlanta, Sebring, Watkins Glen, Laguna Seca, VIR, Infineon, Circuit of the Americas(newly built, we'll find out), Lime Rock, Road America, Mid-Ohio...
i love the sound of straight-cut gears. dont you?
I love this idea!
WHAT! There are hardly any road courses left in Europe that are as awesome, as challenging and original as most of the tracks in the US.
The US is a paradise for road racers.
They can't make cars that go round them though, that is why they use Porsche's...
do they have to heel toe or rev match on down shifts? or is it all computer controlled
yeah! This is what I like to see.
Using the clutch on downshifts helps the transmission last longer between rebuilds.
Would be awesome to get telemetry with these. Great race cars.
Exactly. Someone who hasn't been around it as much wouldn't know.
Yeah I noticed that as well. I thought in these cars you only needed the clutch to get moving from a standstill.
the gears in this car are straight cut, not helical; you may notice this noise when most road cars are in reverse, it's the same thing, straight gears.
so you're saying that the clutch isnt really needed then but just drivers preference if they want to use it or not...
Bump shifter? What's that? He could brake with left foot and just blip throttle on downshifts with right foot to match the revs. But lots of drivers use right foot braking anyway.
What trans is used in this work of art?
No, it's great! The only tracks I know by heart are the NASCAR ovals!
That last corner requires balls.
Mazda laguna seca hands down amazing and the new f1 track in texas
Love the whine..
We pretty much do,It's called Pikes Peak...
Willow springs and button willow. Don't forget thunderhill.
Johnston sure knows how to handle those porsches
What is going on here? Is he clutching down and heel-toeing to blip the throttle?
I might sound like a noob when i ask this, but why does he slam harder when down-shifting than up-shifting?
I like this track, since it's less long-straight, good with my Elise.
Video makes me feel like I'm in the car with him!
Is their a clutch pedal on this?
Anyone know what that track surface is? The white makes it look like concrete.
Were you expecting a Sunday drive to Denny's?
oh that turbo! damn!
Is it bad i know the layout of that track off by heart?
Straight cut gears ftw!!
Yea, Pikes Peak is pretty sick, but it's not a race track.
It's a time trial track, point A to B. ;)
Have to ever herd of Laguna Seca.
1:24 DAT TURN!
well it gets louder and louder as speed and gears raises, turbo noise stays the same in all gears :D but ye, easy to missinterprete
In his defense, it does sound like a lot of modern day turbos.
Turn 3 is probably one of the most difficult corner in any circuit because it's really blind entering the corner.
a circuit with right corners in america ? IMPOSSIBLE !!!
I want to do that.
This track remind me of the amazing Forza 4
I thought bump shifters didnt need the clutch to be pressed
Those race driver could react within split second..
one day...
At first your comment sounded really geeky but I would actually love to see the same thing
What are you talking about? The U.S. has plenty of great tracks you just don't care to know them. I'm not going to name them all. You said the US only has a FEW good tracks and I named 10 great ones. Of course Europe, being the birthplace of motorsport, will have more famous tracks, but that doesn't mean the US doesn't have many great tracks....
wow.
Hes confident :D
Vroom!
You named 10 tracks. I know some of them, and if others are that great, i would know about them already. And compare Europe and America. In Europe, there are many nice tracks, really many. Spa, Instanbul, Monza, Silverstone, Paul-Ricard, Magny-Cours, Nurburgring, Imola, Jerez, Hockenheim... By the size of the area and motorsport history, America should have a lot more famous circuits. At least that is my opinion. Even just UK has more tracks then US. Unfortunately.
Laguna Seca. Nuffsaid
i guess you don't get a joke when you see one
they need it on the downshift. not on upshifts though. if you watch his left foot you'll never see it move on upshifts.
He is trying to kick the clutch pedal so hard it will come out of the otherside of the firewall
laguna seca! :D
why you say that?
Where's the corvette team
never drove a manual before?
I would say just a few good tracks... Unfortunately that is true.
it's funny that Atlanta's streets r much smoother than this track !
The track looks a bit short & uninspired.
But hey, at least the track has corners & elevations. "Great things have small beginings", and maybe someday we'll see an American Nürburgring. :D
Not a turbo. It's the gearbox.
Asphalt.
Dat gear whine...
[ENGINE REVVING]
Sequential shift dogbox
transmission with STRAIT CUT gears = loud gear box.
its called correcting over steer and under steer brahh. obviously you have never driven a car fast around a track
Not every one moves like a sloth ;)
too early shifting in the begining.
turbo? rofl there is no turbo :D its the gearbox noise, rofl :D
i touch myself at night sometimes..i feel guilty after
Lame - this video is sped up (watch the steering wheel).
have you ever driven on track before?
nice try ihop
those in car cams really distort the perception of speed. this guy is hauling ass.
hahah
lol, I make one joke about "right corners in america" and everyday I get replies from butthurts with no sense of humor
it seems some americans don't have a sense of humor
LOL No...doesn't nascar race there? Soooo Ghay!
Nurburgring is better...EVERYTHING GERMAN IS BETTER. Nurburgring soooo good...I no go to 4th grade nomore...Just post about nurburgring and read Goosebump.
*Wink wink*
grow up
