@@GreenAppelPie When we didn't have to deal with it anymore and it just became a meme. Its good character design and animation, just not great user interface.
I think its due to the millennial generation growing up and being nostalgic for him. For us, he was just a funny little dude when we worked on the computer in school. I remember messing with him and changing the character to the wizard or dog. Now that he's gone we remember him from our childhood. I doubt people older than us care for him. Or younger for that matter.
I have a fondness for him because I would be bored in my high school computer class on how to use MS Office so I just sat there clicking on him and watching all the different animations. I've probably seen them all 20 or 30 times so I have many memorized.
The problem is them shoving it in your face constantly with no way to shut it off. It's the same thing they do with the Edge browser. I don't have a problem with Edge, what's annoying is Windows constantly getting mad if it's not the default browser.
@Nick C My problem with Edge is that Microsoft, if you use their default stuff to search for a different browser to install, *still* tries to mansplain you away from it. "Aww, you don't actually *need* that, have you heard about Edge?"
I never hated clippy, I thought he was weird. Though I did like it when he was animated to tap the glass and the computer would make a sound like he was physically inside the computer tapping the glass. That was a nice touch.
Throw in the backstory of Bob, the PR team (that I was on) that didn't want him at all, and then they why's and how's of MS making Clippy show up more often by dumbing down the intelligent part. 10 part series EASY!!! LMAO!

He was also the precursor of modern voice assistants like Aleksa, Siri or Google Assistant.
Bob tested really well with its intended user-base of people afraid of technology. Unfortunately the tech-heads who were never the intended users scorned it so it got killed. This has happened again and again in IT history thereby stunting the advance of user-friendly interfaces.

Either you were a kid back when you first worked with Office or you are wearing rose tinted glasses. Anyone who worked with Office long enough "back da old dayz" would come to hate Clippy because he oftentimes never gave the right answer and was just in the way.

I always loved Clippy. It's good to see that many people also started to love him. Clippy even has got back to Windows 11, where he is used as... paperclip emoji!
The design of clippy was great! The practical use of him not so much. If you want to put hints and messages in front of the user, seasoned users will inherently get annoyed by them because they see it as a useless obstacle. And if you give those messages a face, it gives those people something personal to direct their anger towards
I at first disliked Clippy for not able to close it out. But when trying out different characters, like a dog or princess, they didnt do any fun things, they just move a little and no interactions. Clippy was able to move and contort into different shapes and movements that makes it so flexible to express what it was trying to do.
The dog did things! The best was when you'd print something and he'd put a piece of paper with a paw print on it under his collar. Who remembers the wizard that would snore if you didn't do anything for five minutes?

I mean, this guy created the part of clippy that we all love. Where's the interview with the management that made the decisions about how he was implemented? Like, who's decision was it to not add a way to disable clippy? I want an interview with that person.
I loved Clippy as a child! It was the best part of the otherwise boring classes in which we were "taught" how to type a letter into Word'97. Most of us kids could not understand why the adults were making so much fuss about it when it was so easy, and we were sitting there, bored to tears, watching Clippy change and waiting for the free period when we would be finally allowed to play some games! Good times! 🙂
1:49 The Macintosh used to create Clippy in 1996 predates Steve Jobs' first iMac, debuted in 1998. So the correct Mac was most likely a Power Macintosh 8200 or 8500, which runs on PowerPC CPU. The 8600 was a great looking beast, which introduced a beautiful drawbridge door for easy upgrades.
Clippy was a "ahead of its time" implementation of a really good idea. The intelligent AI assistant will become a ubiquitous feature of future systems, Clippy was just too soon to take advantage of the AI tech that makes those things viable.
While I didn't need to use Clippy when we had out first computer back in the day (we had computer classes where a teacher would give lessons about how a pc works), I always thought Clippy was cute. He still is and it's awesome to see and hear about the person who made him.
I loved Clippy .. he is my favourite friend who some day just disappeared .. he was keeping me occupied while working on my homework. As an ADHD child, he was my own on screen fidget spinner. This person might not know it but that little fella kept me focused enough to do homeworks.
Big thank you to Clippy creator Kevan! 👏👏👏 instagram.com/kevanatteberry/

Great story! I hope he's getting royalties on all the stuff that Clippy shows up on now.
I don't miss Clippy as much as I missed you guys!
Thanks for the content!
The sole reason I still keep the copy of Microsoft Office XP is Clippy and his friends, although never used, but still be able to run
That intro is brutal. Apparently the user wasn’t familiar with how to close a window.
Very cool, Kevan. Congrats!
I remember you mentioned this when you helped chauffeur my family on that one day my dad broke both his legs rollerblading! Big ups!
I loved Clippy .. he is my favourite friend who some day just disappeared .. he was keeping me occupied while working on my homework. As an ADHD child, he was my own on screen fidget spinner. This person might not know it but that little fella kept me focused enough to do homeworks.
