In 1997, Microsoft released its latest version of Office with a new feature! Now, if you ever had any questions, your new assistant was there to help. His name? Clippit, or commonly known as Clippy.
Originally intended as a way to capitalize on the findings of a research paper published at Stanford University, Clippy instead ended up creating even more issues than before. Rather than helping people with their problems, he often just took up space, asked the same questions repeatedly, never took the user's responses into account, and distracted focused users, even leaving many infuriated.
Clippy has since cemented himself in history as one of Microsoft's most embarrassing projects, as well as one of the worst AI tools in history, leaving behind a very mixed legacy. Some people love him, others hate him
...and even some are thinking of bringing him back?

Of course, as a brand-new character in the 90s, there was no nostalgia surrounding him back then. People in the 1990s didn't get nostalgic over the 1990s --- just like how in the 2020s we don't get nostalgic for the 2020s.

Perhaps the issue with clippy was that the people who an assistant like that *would* have helped just weren't using computers at all in the first place. Back in the 90s most people using computers were business people or weird nerds, that's not so much the case now.

    • @johnd6487

I wonder if it's not because a lot of stuff seems less obvious than it was.
Back in the day GUI software was designed to mimic what you would do with whatever machine you were replacing with your PC. Nowadays it's not always as obvious - probably because most of us no longer used the machines the PC has replaced, so designers see no reason to pander to our expectations.
I first used Windows 3.1 while i was an undergraduate working in a cleaning job in a leisure centre that still had typewriters for the office staff. I became a computer genius in the eyes of one of my colleagues when I pointed out she could put down her dictionary and click on the spellcheck icon.
Since then, during my career, I've configured specialist booking systems (for the same company.. I moved up and stayed on) and i'm currently using a highly specialised 3d design and print package to make medical devices at my local hospital, as i started during lockdown, it's been largely self taught with input from my manager aimed more at what he (as a consultant) needs than how to get the design he wants from the software.. thank the gods for youTube demos!
These days though, I sometimes look at my laptop and really can't figure out how to change the basics.
First time I took some holiday, it took me an hour to set an out of office message on Outlook, partly because in my previous job we used Google, but mostly because the simple drop down menus of the past are gone and nothing obvious I clicked on would bring up the option until I gave up and headed for the help file.. and even then, having done it once, it was so unintuitive I had to go to help again the next time I needed to set it because I'd forgotten where it was.

I remember Clippy from my childhood in the 2000s and I was illiterate so I couldn't read what he was saying but I remember finding him extremely friendly. Back in the days I was using Windows XP for paint and pinball. When I started learning French by the 3rd grade, I became familiar with the Latin alphabet and could understand what Clippy offered. I wasn't so keen on Word yet because I was still figuring out the keyboard letters and tried my best to write simple sentences and insert images from the internet without formatting tho. Later on, both my parents got a laptop each and that desktop was spare. Mom had Windows XP whereas dad had Windows 7. I do not remember Clippy to be anywhere on dad's computer however. I couldn't figure out why things were different. I don't know exactly when Windows Vista was released, but uncle had it and I don't remember Clippy showing up there either. Thanks for the video. This revived over 15 years of memories.

I'm too young to be born in the era of Clippy, but I have seen him once. Early on in primary school, our librarian would usually bring his own laptop to school. One day however, he brought an older laptop with him, I assume this was because something happened to his main one. He connected it to the projector and started going through some document with us. I remember seeing Clippy at the bottom right of the screen. He did not move, he did not say anything, he merely just stood there, menacingly.
Fast forward to 2023 and I still don't use any assistants, apart from autocorrect. Clippy came at a poor time, but it walked, so all the assistants we have today could run.

I've always liked Clippy. During the Clippy era I liked to use Word to copy/paste random images I found into documents, look at the fonts that turned letters into images and symbols and write nonsense, because I had yet to learn how to write. At that age it's probably a surprise to nobody that a shapeshifting cartoon character doing funny things would be appealing. During my school years when we started using the school's computers between the 00s and 10s I remember we would get caught up in playing with Clippy and the other characters you could pick and not instantly get started on what we were actually supposed to do.

I remember the day I first saw Clippy as a Microsoft word assistant on my parents' computer. I didn't use him as an assistant, I just liked the idea of your sort of friend just sitting with you while you work. Then my computer broke and I never saw it again because then I had a newer version of Word installed where it was removed. When I found out that most people hated it, I was very surprised, because I really liked the way your virtual assistant interacted with you and did some cool stuff. Now I understand why the idea failed. It was a good idea for children, but he only annoyed adults with his unexpected appearance and useless questions. If Clippy were some kind of add-on for kids to make their time on the computer more fun, then I think it would have been successfull.

I got my first computer when I was 7, in 2006. It was an old computer running windows 95 and Clippy felt so futuristic to me lol. It was my first time using a computer and I thought he was cute.
It didn't take long for my dad to buy a new one with Vista, get internet access in our house (this is not in the US, btw. Things were different) and just like that Clippy was gone for me. I wish he made a return as an advanced AI tool

I remember Clippy. The biggest issue was that it was annoying, a hinderance, & it asked the most asinine questions/gave the most useless hints/tips. All basic stuff anyone using a computer already knows, or stuff that is completely irrelevant. & it was in your face covering up your work, it wasn't just a little toolbar/icon off to the side, nope, they had to put it jumping out in your face every 5 seconds. SMH.

I never had any use for Clippy's "assistance" but I enjoyed having him in the corner of the screen. It was like having a little companion to sit with me and occassionally entertain me with his little animations while I was writing whatever boring school paper I had to write. Even better was when I was in fifth grade, when my teacher showed me that other characters existed. Being a cat lover, I immediately fell in love with Links and always wanted that cute little kitty up in the corner of my document.

With the addition of clippy's possible return, I'm afraid Microsoft would have already been beaten to the chase that hasn't happened yet
I'm from the future. coming back here, I can tell you there is a guy on his Linux laptop trying to create an assistant that can execute system commands from your own computer (with your permission), look at your files (with permission), look up on the internet (with curl) and even have system information at hand ($SHELL, $USER, $LANG, $HOME, ect)
it will be an open source program that anybody can install and will even utilize David Shapiro's RAVEN. I heard he is even working on setting up servers so that it can seamlessly port memories from device to device.

I can't help but notice and appreciate how you don't assume a watcher has seen all your other videos. Whenever a topic is relevant on a recurring basis, you still take the time to explain what you're talking about every time, without going into excessive detail if it's not the main focus. It's great for a newcomer who might be learning something new. For a returning viewer, it doesn't feel repetitive, it just creates a sense of perspective that highlights how connected everything is. It works really well when you're talking about the history of technology and the Internet and how it affects and reflects culture. It's also nice whenever you do end up taking a closer look at something you've mentioned before, like Microsoft Bob here. Really nice work.

I never understood the hate against Clippy, I remember it being around when I was using computers at the university writing papers and the like. It didn't really bother me, although it wasn't really helpful, I have fond memories of it coming with (useless) advices , those cool small animations , especially when it kind of broke the 4th wall by poking on the screen. As I was writing and going through dry academic papers , I welcomed those small and funny interruptions, and I always thought the animations were well done.
It's probably nostalgia talking, but I would activate the Clippy functionality on Office on a hearthbeat today if it came back, useful or not.

It wasn't that Clippy was annoying. It was that it was useless. It would offer generic advice that we already knew.
Clippy was like the FAQ on a product. It didn't actually answer the question you were asking. It would spout off a laundry list of solutions that never addressed the real problem.
FAQs are generally useless, and other sites tend to parrot them without actually know a damn thing about the subject.
It's ridiculous that you have to seek out other people who are not of the company to get the answers you need.

I somehow have nostalgia for Clippy even though he was already removed from Word when I was born; I was in elementary school until late 2018 and they didn't have new computers yet, so they were using the same ones they got in the early 2000s. We had beige square IBM computers with floppy drives and Windows XP, and when we had computer class, they taught us how to use Clippy, even though he was long dead!
