I only encountered Clippy through elementary school computer classes, but I always thought he was kind of cute. It makes me sad to see people hate on him so much. He was just trying to help.
Me too. I think most of the hate comes from the fact that Microsoft forced him into our faces. If they were smart enough to give the option of silencing the help, but leaving him up to do his graphics or if you specifically asked for help. he would not have been so infuriating to people who knew what they were doing.
Keep in mind that at the time they introduced it to MS Office the vast majority of people using computers were much more tech savvy than they are today. Sure, you had folks that just bought their first computer and hadn't used MS-DOS, but the bulk of the people using computers had. Even for them though, the Windows computers weren't very stable and you could be expected to have to spend a lot more time researching things as many didn't have the internet, just a rather large, now, electronic manual for hellp. For us, it was patronizing, annoying and as the video pointed out, not very helpful. And ultimately, had the same issues that MS has had for years, help files and manuals that are incredibly lacking in terms of things that end users might need to do. The manuals at least as far as MS-DOS 5 had been rather large tomes of knowledge covering most things that one could possibly want, but after that they became unreliable and incomplete, and as such, no matter what they did with Clippy, it likely wouldn't ever have been very helpful as the manual wasn't a selling point for the users.

Even today's "Personal AI-powered Assistants" are total trash if you ask me, it wasn't just clippy who never learned a thing about it's user, even the modern Google Assistant seems incapable of knowing anything about you except maybe a couple of things there and there.
Ironically, characters "personally" talking to the user and walking him through everything is now coming back big time in the form of crappy "chat bots".
If "Clippy" wasn't bad enough, early versions of Windows 95 embedded ads for Quicken in some of their files. While working with some MSWord programs, a small ad for Quicken would open showing a woman talking on a landline telephone asking if the user might need some help. Clicking on the ad opened a window explaining how to purchase Quicken software for a nominal fee. Microsoft was slick enough to bury the Quicken ad deep within the registery making it a real chore to disable.

If Microsoft would have chosen to enable Clippy as a setting in the setup along the lines of "Do you want assistance in Windows"? it would probably be way less hated

MaxtheRobot come on, there are worse things on the Internet and in r34
Cue me a few years ago, needing to borrow my mom’s laptop for school while mine was getting fixed. I didn’t realize what I was in for until one fateful day I loaded Word to work on an essay.
Only to realize she had installed her office’s copy of Windows 2000.
“It looks like you’re writing a letter. I can help you with that!”
I died inside. At least I gave my friend a laugh when I literally screamed upon it popping up.
Clippy came from heaven, went back to heaven, and soon we brought him back.
I was a child when I first was introduced to computers. It was around the time of Windows XP/Vista, and Clippy taught me a lot, honestly. Thank u Kevan Attebury, and thank u the programmers behind Clippy (AND THE BOUNCY RED BALL TOO!)
omg.... the little robot.... i forgot about that little guy.... he was my favorite.....
If that isn't Christopher Lloyd at the end, he's a pretty good look-alike...by 120p standards.
I thought he got clipped off.
Even today's "Personal AI-powered Assistants" are total trash if you ask me, it wasn't just clippy who never learned a thing about it's user, even the modern Google Assistant seems incapable of knowing anything about you except maybe a couple of things there and there.
Artificial intelligence is hopefully going to be better
Hey! How DARE you criticize something Crapple popularized, which is putting low effort into things but trick people into thinking it's revolutionary?!
How dare you, I love clippy, he helped me when I was younger
Ironically, characters "personally" talking to the user and walking him through everything is now coming back big time in the form of crappy "chat bots".
When Clippy wants to be your friend, but you don't want him to be your friend
You want more
I like the Clippy Memes =D

When Clippy wants to capitalise your word, but you are so lazy you want it uncapitalised
I Didn't Know, I'm A Former XP User Ever Since I Was Born!
*_But That DOG, I See Always Used To Hangout In The Search-pane!_* So, He Was BOB, Microsoft's Biggest Failure!!! Hmm...
I loved the dog and cat.
Bonzi Buddy was malware....Funny how malware became the business model of all the largest tech companies. (This is my soapbox and I am staying on it:)
Good observation.
I still get horrifying flashbacks of the times I had to deal with Clippy.
3:28 that guy sounds just like connor, the android sent by cyberlife
I love how Microsoft actually makes fun of their failures. I mean, Nintendo put the Virtual Boy in Tomodachi Life, but…
I forgot all about the characters to select from, this just opened up old memories.
it looks pretty cute , i always like to look at him staring when one of my family member works , but now i see main issue is kinda distracting that you keep seeing animation face looking at you constantly can cause you to focus less , not because its creepy or anything but because its animated object in general
Me: whos clippy?
TSE: Exactly
cortana is just bonzy buddy x10 including the spyware
I liked Clippit, and the paper cat, but they just weren't helpful. I feel the same about Cortana, except I know Cortana wants to steal and sell my user information. Clippy never betrayed me like that.
If Microsoft would have chosen to enable Clippy as a setting in the setup along the lines of "Do you want assistance in Windows"? it would probably be way less hated
It looks like you're trying to read a comment, like some help with that?

Looks like your trying to subscribe. Can I help you subscribe to Ralsei YT?

I liked clippy, if only for the little animations. I mean what kid wouldn't play with things like that on school, since school is boring as all heck.
Why is this in my recommended 3 years later
2:29 For kids it coud be good =D
Clippy, the program wanting to help, but never could ;-;
"Whatever Happened to Clippy"?
He got clipped. 😜 💾📎
BLKBRDSR71 That’s actual Microsoft canon
Bad joke

Clapped
@@Aspen72 agree, he is our favourite paperclip now.
Every time I was about to close an unnamed text, clippy made a really turbulent move and asked, if I really wanted to close Word. This was so shocking.
To all of those who haven't seen it, you can't understand what I mean
Me going into high-school never having even heard of clipy but apearently he wasn't gone until I went to elemetary
