Clippy honestly was my favourite interactive assistant when I used XP as a kid. Good times
I remember that i LOVED clippy as a kid. I was entertained to no end by the little animations, and i even got my mom to help me download the other characters.
Holy cow same! I never downloaded anybody new. I just loved seeing him bounce around and it made me giggle every time.
I remember clicking 'Animate' on each of the assistants about a million times each when I was a boy.

I only encountered Clippy through elementary school computer classes, but I always thought he was kind of cute. It makes me sad to see people hate on him so much. He was just trying to help.
Me too. I think most of the hate comes from the fact that Microsoft forced him into our faces. If they were smart enough to give the option of silencing the help, but leaving him up to do his graphics or if you specifically asked for help. he would not have been so infuriating to people who knew what they were doing.
Keep in mind that at the time they introduced it to MS Office the vast majority of people using computers were much more tech savvy than they are today. Sure, you had folks that just bought their first computer and hadn't used MS-DOS, but the bulk of the people using computers had.
Even for them though, the Windows computers weren't very stable and you could be expected to have to spend a lot more time researching things as many didn't have the internet, just a rather large, now, electronic manual for hellp.
For us, it was patronizing, annoying and as the video pointed out, not very helpful. And ultimately, had the same issues that MS has had for years, help files and manuals that are incredibly lacking in terms of things that end users might need to do. The manuals at least as far as MS-DOS 5 had been rather large tomes of knowledge covering most things that one could possibly want, but after that they became unreliable and incomplete, and as such, no matter what they did with Clippy, it likely wouldn't ever have been very helpful as the manual wasn't a selling point for the users.

I was a teenager when clippy graced our screens... and loved him.
I turned off his offer for help and just had him sit in the corner of my screen while i wrote assignments. It was like having a companion.
Now we have social media... arguably a companion that is more distracting to teenagers than clippy ever was.

to be fair, young me LOVED clippy lol
i remember disabling him a few times (or maybe my dad did that, i don't remember), and specifically going out of my way to dig through microsoft word settings so i could enable him again :') as you can imagine, i eventually grew out of him when i figured stuff out on my own, but screwing around in microsoft word with fonts and such was always just that much lonelier without clippy there, even if i wasn't using him haha I was fairly upset when he wasn't available on newer versions of windows
My dad had an old desktop crt and all that he gave me and I used to hop on word to see clippy do random things. It was so entertaining to me. I had him on in the background while I played club penguin and watched videos. Glad I still have the old unit. I even have the keyboard, mouse, monitor, and speakers.

Honestly, after watching Animator VS Animation again, I could totally see Clippy being a Smash Bros fighter, it’d be weird, sure, but using text as a weapon would be really cool.

I honestly loved Clippy from the very beginning. He always made me smile! :)
My elementary school had old computers, and they had clippy. My entire class was in a computer room writing essays, and we all remarked at how we hated the paper clip. That was in 2010. Our computers were really out dated

I liked clippy.
I liked the office characters, and yes I was proficient in Microsoft office then and I still am.
I mostly just liked it because of the small touches to it. Like a misspelling, or sentence fragment, or just the occasional tutorial. If you feel insulted by a piece of software then you have a inflated ego and are over sensitive to not understand it is talking about a broad audience..
Indeed. I think the real villain was Microsoft for forcing him in our face. If he was given the option to silence help and just sit their doing his little graphics until specifically asked, he would have been more endearing. I loved his animations, particularly his eyes going through paper outlines during spell check. Or his "foot" breaking the fourth wall by tapping on the glass.

I loved clippy. And very soon cartoon digital assistants are already making a comeback in the form of avatars in virtual worlds. I wouldn't be surprised if you'll see these kinds of characters become a mainstay.
I never hated clippy,20 years ago i was in second grade learning how to use Word and me and my class mates were LAUGHING OUR ASSES OFF AT THE ANIMATIONS :))

I remember how on our school computers in the mid-2000s we had clippy and played around with him all the time when we were bored during computer lessons, or switched to other characters to see what animations they had. I remember often switching to the eaarth character.
The thing is, a lot of schools don't update software too much, we had Clippy on our computers into the 2010's.

almost all business and school Computers here in Finland have been updated to Windows 10 about a year ago….i remember that about 2-3 years ago my primary school had like Windows xp machines running Linux because that school couldnt afford new Computers. But thank god they got upraged.

I remember Clippy vaguely but I don't remember hating it at all. It was just... there.
Clippy turned into Siri , Google voice etc... The founders of Siri are doing a real useful assistant. So clippy was ahead of its time, just annoying for users who knew their shit.
Don't forget Windows 10 Cortana, a much more direct descendant of clippy. Cortana even inherited Clippy's not very usefulness.
The newer assistants have a lot more in common with Bonzi Buddy, with all of the spying and recording of user actions they do.
@@Modern.Millennial Cortana just doesn't make a whole lot of sense on a device that may or may not have a microphone. Not to mention may or may not have a always connected internet connection like a phone.
I'm not going to go run to my laptop to open it up to ask Cortana a question, and my desktop that's always connected doesn't have a microphone. My laptop may or may not have a internet connection depending if I'm at home or somewhere else.
I don't even use Google assistant that much on my phone. The only reason I even used the assistant is through my Google home devices around the house. Other than that, I really don't care for personal assistants.
Clippy never gave me the right answer, even on easy questions. The animation was nice.

I always felt bad for clippy growing up knowing that people made fun of him. He's so cute!

I was a child when I first was introduced to computers. It was around the time of Windows XP/Vista, and Clippy taught me a lot, honestly. Thank u Kevan Attebury, and thank u the programmers behind Clippy (AND THE BOUNCY RED BALL TOO!)

Who would've predicted that social engagement would lead to things like Alexa, Siri and Cortana, and essentially, microphones all over your place? I wouldn't. But honestly? I used the red smiley-ball character back on Office 2k, put him on the side, so I had at least one face smiling at me, when we were writing an exam at school, where everyone was, well, not smiling. XD I don't exactly miss Clippy, but I believe he deserves a bit of honour. After all, someone just had to come up with social interaction, because otherwise, speech-assistents would possibly never have become a thing.
But now imagine... Clippy returning with an AI backend. Creepy...somehow...

I grew up with early Microsoft so as a kid, I found clippy fun and useful but that’s just me. Also, I want Gilbert Godfrey as my voice assistant! I need that in my life right now 😂

i liked clippy. he was endearing. he only wanted to help, that was literally all he ever wanted and people hated him for it. also he was funny and cute! ^-^ i was so sad when my primary school upgraded our computers and he was suddenly gone :/ if i had a working computer and a legal copy of windows, you bet your ass i'd hack the sh!t outta Office to install a fan version of him if i had to xD but then again i was just a beginner at using computers when clippy was around. i was literally 6-8 years old when he was just chillin' there in the computer lab at school (year ones/first graders weren't allowed to use the computer lab)so i was about the age where turning into a bicicle for no reason was funny.

When Clippy wants to capitalise your word, but you are so lazy you want it uncapitalised
I like how the whole cli->tui->gui->sui "evolution" is just a "you can save yourself 5 minutes of reading documentation by spending 2 hours blindly figuring out the interface"(c) trope in action. Not only that, those "evolutions" actually make using actual software more slow, clunky and WAY more complex to use, so something that required like 5 pages of documentation to master now takes BOOKS worth of knowledge to master them.

Cue me a few years ago, needing to borrow my mom’s laptop for school while mine was getting fixed. I didn’t realize what I was in for until one fateful day I loaded Word to work on an essay.
Only to realize she had installed her office’s copy of Windows 2000.

I died inside. At least I gave my friend a laugh when I literally screamed upon it popping up.
Even today's "Personal AI-powered Assistants" are total trash if you ask me, it wasn't just clippy who never learned a thing about it's user, even the modern Google Assistant seems incapable of knowing anything about you except maybe a couple of things there and there.
Artificial intelligence is hopefully going to be better
