Mark played with Bob Dylan many times, both recording and touring. He, also, co-produced Bob's album Infidels....

The most satisfying thing was the demand for excellence recreating that hi-fi sound on the tour in 85 which they achieved, well they did in Calgary where I saw it anyways. Whomever they had on the boards at the front of house had an impeccable ear but that would be expected with MK's perfectionist mentality.

Knopflers best album is the album he did with Chet Atkins, mostly instrumentals. Great playing on that one.

I got a CD player when they first became available and there were only a handful of CD's on the market. This was the first CD I bought and it was one of the first to be fully recorded using full CD format. Most of the first CD's released had been recorded analog then converted to CD. We used to read special CD magazines looking for the DDD code to hear the best sound for the new format at that time. It was a whole new audio experience and sounded so clean and clear compared to an album. Of course technology just keeps changing as time goes on.....

I remember those three letter codes on CDs, each letter of course being either A for analog or D for digital. The three positions represented recording, mixing, and mastering. The first DDD CD I bought was Frank Zappa Meets The Mothers of Prevention.
The title was a dig at the group of politicians wives and other people who wanted to censor music that they thought was "inappropriate", you know, music about sex and drugs with "dirty" words and themes and so on. There were even congressional hearings with many witnesses for both sides, including Frank Zappa and John Denver and other artists defending artistic freedom. The result was the warning labels that later appeared on albums.

‘Getting the performance you want is almost more important than getting the sound’ …… found the stuff you said about getting the sound right before recording rather than trying to fix it after so interesting. And your description of the song being shiny is great. For me it’s background music but your thoughts are right on.

Its crisp clear and fat, obviosly not bassy but full at the same time. Very good production for 84/85. First time i have actually listened to in a long time.

A good example of an 80's pop song that was made for the radio. It's super short, just catchy enough, and basically just cycles around those chorus changes. Hell, they probably spent more time getting the guitar sound than they did writing it. 'Brothers in Arms' isn't my fave DS album. It's soft of like the Dire Straits version of The Police's 'Synchronicity' (another album recorded at AIR) -- very polished and tightly executed, but it was such a radio and MTV staple that I got tired of hearing it. Still, it IS an important album, especially in context of 1980's pop music. It established a standard for radio-friendly but sophisticated pop music that tons of other bands then tried to emulate. By this time Dire Straits were darlings of the UK posh set (Princess Di, etc.), although they'd paid their dues to get there. Unlike bands like Yes or Rush, this is a band whose albums you don't really need to listen to in any kind of order because it's all about Mark Knopfler. He came into this group pretty much fully formed, and didn't really evolve as a guitar player, except for bringing in different textures like the National guitar.

I'm not much of a Dire Straits fan but Omar's drumming is so tasty. Sultans of Swing from their debut album is a pretty cool song.

Title track is great too. Recorded at air studios, same as Hold Your Fire 🧐 I remember getting my first ever cd, Grace Under Pressure by Rush, and seeing the three letters on the back to see how it was recorded/mixed/mastered for the very first time.

I was one of those millions who bought the CD soon after it came out. There are a few strong songs that I like on this one, 'The Man's too strong' and 'Ride across the river'. 'Money for Nothing' and 'Walk of life' got tons of radio play back then so these are easy to sing along to, but I don't think they are the best songs on the album while 'So far away' is one of the weaker ones. As for production quality, I bought this one and 90125 at about the same time and both have great sound quality.

Omar Hakim! I had no idea. I've never seen anyone drum with his fluidity! see "I Burn for You." I catch myself singing this chorus without realizing it. It is about the sighing vibe," for continuity sake a "Long Distance Runaround" song...stupid dad joke.

I had heard only fairly recently myself that it's him drumming on this album and not actually Terry Williams (except for the 'Money For Nothing' intro), and I was quite surprised by that fact, too!

Interesting how you pointed out the sound reminded you of Paul Simon (and rightly so, too), who sings in his song 'Graceland' that 🎵"The Mississippi Delta was shining like a National guitar"🎵 - and that's also exactly what can be seen on the cover of this Dire Straits album! 😀

Enjoy folks 👍

I like money for nothing and the guitar in Sultans of Swing. I bought this album because of Money for Nothing and thought the rest of the album would sound like that. Nope! You can’t deny Knopfler’s guitar skills but his song writing and singing skills are not up to par. I’ve tried to get into this album again recently. Nope. Still sucks. I laughed out loud when you said you thought one of their songs was a Springsteen song. Another overrated artists. His songs are always better done by someone else. The dude can’t sing either. Which is funny because every time my band did a Springsteen song, I got to sing it. I think maybe they were telling me something. 🤣

I've listened to a lot of Springsteen and read a lot of reviews and stuff about him. Some people are perhaps not all that into him and some of his albums have gotten unenthusiastic reviews. But never, never have I met or heard of anyone holding the opinion that Bruce Springsteen can't sing.

    • @yar9333
      @yar9333 2 месяца назад +1

@@EnoVarma oh I’ve met many people who think he’s a good singer. He’s a great entertainer, but a lousy singer. Just listen to him. Mumbles and is out of tune. I know because I sing just like him and I’m a lousy singer.
