Masterpiece of a song - Mark Knopfler's emotional singing and guitar work are perfect. Maybe check out Telegraph Road from Alchemy Live next or Tunnel of Love from Wembley '85.
One of Mark Knopfler's grandfathers was German Knopfler being a German name, and the other British. He always thought it was crazy, a paradox, that they fought against each other and it was the Falklands war in 1982 that provoked him to write Brothers In Arms. The feeling and emotion that he brings to the table in this song with both vocals and guitar, is heart-rending. From start to finish this is a song from the heart and there are countless hearts that have been deeply touched by it since it was first released in 1985. If we compare Brothers in Arms with Sultans of Swing and Money for Nothing, so different in so many ways, we are only scratching the surface of this man's genius. The song is a masterpiece and a master class for many of the ego-driven wannabes in the rock world because he shows that less can really achieve greatness - no million mile an hour solos and, like David Gilmour, he expresses himself on guitar and vocals with a respect that the subject of the futility of war warrants. A great review and I could feel you struggling a little because we all use superlatives in every day conversation and often find that we devalue them somewhat through over-usage - what words can we use to express the very best of the best?! This song is, the best of the very best!
I saw this Concert in Australia in 1985, nothing comes close. He wrote this song for his friend and other Veterans that served and died in the Falklands war.
If you want a longer version then check out the album track. This is the shortened version for the single release. Also try a couple of the live versions which are longer. The one from the On The Night album and the one from the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute Concert are both fantastic with the latter probably the most emotional version Mark Knopfler (singer, lead guitarist and songwriter extraordinaire) has ever given.
Hey nice reaction and channel. This song from DIRE STRAITS Live "On The Night" 1992 has to be seen to get the full appreciation of Mark's guitar work on a Pensa Suhr. The solo at the end is jawdropping and every reactor I've seen on RUclips were literally in tears. It's my favorite performance from DS. Also from the same concert I think you'll really love Private Investigations. It's really haunting. Cheers from Australia 👍🎸🎸🎸
The original will never be beat and I doubt few will ever try. Home Free didn't do a bad cover they just couldn't come close to matching the haunting instrumental and that man's voice Mark Knopfler re-recorder this song in 2007 and donated the proceeds to British veterans. It specifically referred to the Falkins War but the message rings true about all wars past and present. "We have just one world but we live in different ones." "We are fools to make War with our brothers in arms." Humans are on species and in a broader sense we are all brothers in arms.
This song was used very emotionally in an episode of the show "Miami Vice". It is so well done. Every time I hear this song I have to go to RUclips and watch the video. Search "brothers in Arms scene Miami Vice. I find it emotional every time. Watching the whole episode makes it better.
Beautifully said. I agree 💯. I've known this one for long long time and it's already been "not long enough"... Ive loved while heartedly. So I was afraid to listen to it by 'home free' because I love this so much. Thankfully tho... Theirs is very different but I appreciated it as much too. I was definately impressed. Now I can't decide. Lucky I don't have to choose. I can have them both
Try Telegraph Road - from Alchemy live. It is stunning. It was the encore to the show so they had already been playing for 2 hours but the performance is astonishing.
i wish everyone could listen to this song on vinyl with the good ol huge brown speakers cos this was the best i heard with this song. blew me away instant emotion. but it was the album version which actually makes even more sense than this wonderful video seeing it is a shorter version. great art in this video for sure, but the album version is the one.
The Album version is a couple of minutes longer. Funeral song for many UK service personnel. Still incredibly moving all these years on especially for those who were in the Falklands, & even in Kosovo & Gulf 1.
Im a big fab of yours. Im an old gut who lives in Nevada Johnny Horton was killed in a traffuc accident in the the 50s you will love his song the cont.
As a Brit I am going to make a significant claim here. We are the greatest at everything we do, music, arts, innovation. Yet we are very bad at politics. And as such we will be wiped out and the World will lose the greatest treasure it ever had. Goodbye.
The Mark Knopfler effect! no one can replicate that! Love your reaction, yes, the song ends far too quick but for me, if you want guitar solos on steroids then you must listen to DS live, always! they are on fire when live and I think they are one of the few bands that are even better ‘live’ having said that, anything from Alchemy Live will blow your socks off! ❤
Lots of bangers on this album and this is one of the more under the radar tracks. If anybody ever tells you Mark Knopfler isn't one of the guitar GOATS they're just wrong. Guitar on this tune is next level!
255 British personnel lost their lives defending the Falkland Islands. Glad you now listened to the original version from it's creator. I'm not at all a fan of Home Free, I think whatever they do it's all about the sound and not about the message, they make music devoid of meaning.
That's a dumbass take on home free, it's called a cover for a reason, and they're Acapella which is literally about the sound, making music with your voices, if they covered this exactly the same it wouldn't make sense
If you want to appreciate another (very different) demonstration of Mark's brilliance, and one of the band's best live performances, check out the live concert version of "Sultans of Swing" from Alchemy.

As a rule of thumb, you should ALWAYS listen to the original first, as after all that is the reason that people have deemed it worth covering. There are exceptions, of course. Cocker's version of "With a Little Help From My Friends" being the best example, and in fact as far as I know, nobody has dared to try other cover versions, as even Ringo said that Joe now owns that song.
I agree, the original with Mark Knopfler is the best. I’ve been listening to Dire Straits for many years & their songs are diverse & great, every one Most powerful lines - You did not desert me, my brothers in arms This one’s even more powerful- But it’s written in the starlight & every line on our palms We are fools to make war on our brothers in arms 🌎 🌍
While I love Home Free, no one does it like the original. Mark Knopfler is a genius. If you get a chance, check out Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris "All the Road Running".
I would like to see you react to You'll Never Walk Alone by Timi Yuro. Do the live version which does not have the greatest video quality but the sound of her voice is better than the studio version.
His guitar sings right to my soul. Mark is one of the best guitar players alive. I love Dire Straits.
Goosebumps every freaking time
Best song of Mark Knpfler/Dire Straits. Beautiful guitarplay.
Masterpiece of a song - Mark Knopfler's emotional singing and guitar work are perfect. Maybe check out Telegraph Road from Alchemy Live next or Tunnel of Love from Wembley '85.
the art of this video is legendary
That guitar pulls at my heartstrings every time, no matter how often I hear this. So poignant.
Ok, I'll say it
Best rock guitar performance ever.
Don't care, bash away
Sadness from the voice.
Pain from the guitar.
Beauty from the whole.
Mark Knopfler can sure make a guitar cry. The way he picks with his fingers instead of using a guitar pick is perfection.
The 1985 version of tunnel of love is amazing
Powerfully emotional.

a song and a clip that will never lose even a fraction of the power with which they affect us. ❤
Soulful. Beautiful. Haunting.
He is without the best guitarist I've ever listened to , he takes it to another level. Beyond Genius.

Dire Straits with Brothers in arms was one of my favorites before I heard Dimash for the first time. It's fantastic, I'll always listen to it.
No one can hold a candle to MK.
Love him
It's a work of absolute genius. Music art at it's very finest.
What this man can do with a guitar is verg special

Mark, IMHO, is in the top 10 of the best guitarist/songwriters. His solo stuff is superb too.

Gives me chills every single time!
One of the greatest songs ever!

Beautiful song
Chills. I have heard this song many times. The intro has me waiting and then, there it is. War is so unfair for man on the lower rung.
Great reaction now do the live version you wont be disappointed

To be honest ..this should be the theme song for the Invictus Games..I would love that!
The absolute god of the guitar.
Esa guitarra te acaricia el alma...
So beautiful~!
Watch their live version of this at Nelson Mandela Birthday concert.
-We can see a classic scene with this song, on the TV show "Miami Vice" in the 1980's, (in last scene of the episode: 'Out Where the Buses Don't Run')
Check out the original extended version my friend, "Amazing" doesn't give it justice. 👍
The Album version is a couple of minutes longer.

Magnificent that’s all I can say.

Simple. Powerful. Emotional. This song has everything. It is one of the best anti-war songs about humanity ever written. Achingly real.
Tunnel of Love and Telegraph Road and sultans of swing!
The album version has an extended solo for you to enjoy!
And the 1993 On The Night Live version is great too. Give it a try!
Lots of bangers on this album and this is one of the more under the radar tracks. If anybody ever tells you Mark Knopfler isn't one of the guitar GOATS they're just wrong. Guitar on this tune is next level!

Mark was a pretty young man when he wrote this. He was a young man with a old soul, way beyond his years when writing song writing.

Bonsoir de France regarder le live de 1993 encore plus émouvant 😊😊

Such emotional and melodic guitar playing, you should now watch the live version of this from the On The Night concert, the guitar outro is stunning.

I don’t know which tracks you have done so far but checkout.. “Telegraph Road Alchemy live” “Tunnel of love “
Dire Straites are the dog's bollocks!
I would like to see you react to You'll Never Walk Alone by Timi Yuro. Do the live version which does not have the greatest video quality but the sound of her voice is better than the studio version.
Have a listen to "Sultans of swing" Important: go for the Alchemie Live Version. I bet you a 100 bucks, you'll be blown away.
I like home free but this is so much better the guitar makes emotional
The album version is longer.
If you haven't watched Sultans of Swing and Telegraph Road from the Alchemy Tour, that's your next stop. . .
You have a movie face.
Ukraine now
I'm curious to know if you've ever reacted to a song that you didn't like.
Does it get any cooler than this!? I don't think so!
I can't believe that you're a brit on your forties and don't know this song...
Hi could you react too Ferlin Kusky Wings of a Dove?
Home Free did a cover of this song, and I think I prefer their version. This guitar performance was amazing!
2:41 mentioned.
