It was written about a fatally wounded British Soldier in the Falklands as his life ebbed away his mates stayed with him. It’s been played at many serviceman’s funeral and I’ve seen many a strong man with tears in his eyes when this is played.
It's an anti war song. Knopfler's grandfathers fought on different sides in WW1, one for the British and one for the Austro Hungarians, hence the final lines , We're fools to make war On our brothers in arms. It's not written about a fatally wounded British soldier in the Falklands. Some journalist thought it was about the Falklands, somebody wrote it was about the Falklands on wikipedia using that journalist as a source and now everyone is running around claiming it as true without any actual evidence. Any of you lot doing this got a quote from Knopfler stating it is about a British soldier in the Falklands war?? I think not.
@TheTaffia well, Knopfler's direct inspiration for this song was actually The Falkland War and some notification made by his father on that but true that this is one of the greatest anti war songs of all time, sharing the ordinary soldier' perspective
It's about a soldier who is dying in the field. It's about the futility of war You should not make war You're only fighting a bunch of people who have been ordered by their superiors who sit back and don't get involved in all the pain and bleeding and dying.
I grew up with my dad listening to Dire Straits. I didn't quite understand it back then, but as I grew up I understand it more and more. He wasn't a man of many words. He gave everything for his family and his country. I can't imagine the horrors he witnessed and went through. I just randomly came across this. I'm in shambles, but makes me appreciate my father even more. Miss you, pops 🫡 🙏
It always amazes me how quickly the attendees of Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler concert go dead silent at hearing the Intro start I’ve been a fan since ‘78 and attended many concerts at venues of different sizes, and still crickets when this starts.
This is played at many UK former service personnel funerals, especially those of us that served from '82 onwards I've heard it at Aussie funerals too it's a universal futility of war song.
Been binge watching your reactions Millie , soo great, but this one got me , my little brother died at age 49 , me and my other brother decided this was a perfect song for us at his funeral, we are still brothers in arms ❤
Well the classic one to listen to now is the Alchemy Live version of Sultans Of Swing. Sultans was Dire Straits' first hit, but this live version is significantly reworks and extended with one of the most epic guitar solos ever.
Knopfler has a unique playing style. Melancholy is a great word to describe this song. There's a scene from the TV show "Miami Vice" that uses this song, and it's a really powerful scene. That show had some artistic videography anyway, and the sonic/visual picture they painted was very emotional.
You need to see the version done by the Royal Marines Band at the Royal Albert Hall a couple of years ago for a remembrance ceremony. Bloody amazing version.
Weird to think that I listened to this cassette over and over again in around 1985, when I was 11. Brothers In Arms is one of those songs that defines my childhood. There are only about 10 of them. If you like this vibe, you might like some amazing Jerry Rafferty stuff. And on RUclips Igor Presnyakov does a really nice solo acoustic version of Brothers In Arms.
FYI - Mark Knopfler (former Dire Straits lead guitarist/ vocalist/ songwriter) has a new solo album in 2024 - 'One deep river'... Check out the song "Two pairs of hands"... 'Brothers in Arms' was written about British soldiers in the Falklands war of 1982... album title track of Dire Straits' biggest commercial album in 1985.
Thank you - so nice to finally see a Dire Straits reaction video that notices the brilliant bass player. He’s called John Illsley and is the co-founder of the band together with Mark Knopfler. I have listened to thousands and thousands of hours of Dire Straits music, both album and concerts, and I have never heard John Illsley miss even a single note. Solid and really great bass. If you want to hear more I’d recommend the Alchemy Live album - the opening track “Once Upon A Time In The West” has a great bass line, but all the songs on there are fantastic. You won’t regret it. Great reaction - but be careful if you pick up the guitar, Mark Knopfler is one of the worlds greatest guitar players with his completely unique fingerpicking and strumming style, it’s not easy to replicate 😉. John Illsley is pretty handy on a guitar also actually, and has made some great solo music too - “In the Darkness” is a favourite of mine:
Would you please just shut up ...(I mean that in a nice way).. this song deserves a better reaction, one where there is no talking....just understanding.
This is a true sad song. I wish you would stop when commenting or wait until the end because so much of the crucial lyrics were missed as you spoke over them. I do truly enjoy your reactions but the most important part about listening to a new song for the first time is really following the lyrics very closely. 😉
Mark Knopfler is one of the all-time guitar greats. Dire Straits released six studio albums and a couple live albums. Mark has done ten movie soundtracks (including “The Princess Bride”) and just released his 10th solo album this month (April 12, 2024). There’s a lot to explore!
If you haven't listened to Terence Jay One Blood it's worth doing. It's from a film Green Street. Terence Jay, an American actor, is in the film with Elijah Wood and Charlie Hunnam. It's so similar to this, you would have to imagine the song was heavily influenced by Brothers in Arms I feel.
Once upon a time in the west, good band saw them when I was a kid, Stevie Ray Vaughan So excited live at the el mocambo, Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa Id rather go blind live,😊😊😊
Jeff Beck is a top guitarist who does finger-style playing for most of his songs. He's done covers of "A Day in the Life" (written by the Beatles) which are excellent. For many years his bad included Tal Wilkenfeld as the bassist, so you might enjoy those quite a bit. There is a video of them doing that song at Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007, and another which is live at Ronnie Scott's. The second one would probably be the better one to watch, since it's a much smaller stage. I suspect there are many other videos of his that you'd enjoy watching. Most of what he's done has been instrumental songs.
Another fingerstyle Unlike most rock guitarists, Lindsey Buckingham does not play with a pick; instead, he picks the strings with his fingers and fingernails and tends to strum with his middle and ring fingers. Initially after joining Fleetwood Mac, Buckingham used a Gibson Les Paul Custom. Peace out
I saw in a documentary, where Mark K' made a note of the military service share of this song. He learned that during the first Gulf War in early Feb'1991, as British tank crew went into Iran (using GPS, which Iraq did not have, and they didn't consider that armies could traverse the deserts) -during the night, British Tanks stopped "somewhere" in the desert to refuel, and the soldiers to rest, have tea, do maintaninece -that "Brothers in Arms" was played between the tanks, from CD,...likely other tunes too, yet Mark K' was rewarded, he said, by this song played.
Mark Knopler is definitely one of my favorite guitarists. And If you would like to see another great finger picking electric guitar player, watch or react to Fleetwood Mac's "I'm So Afraid" with Lindsay Buckingham on guitar and lead vocals. The song kind of has Pink Floyd vibes to it in my opinion.
If you want to see another famous rock, well southern rock in this case, lead electric guitar player that played only with his thumb, check out and react to, "The Marshall Tucker Band - Can't You See - 9/10/1973 - Grand Opera House (Official)". The late Toy Caldwell of the Marshall Tucker Band was unique being one of the few that never used a pic when he played lead. Ironocally, he was also a Marine that was wounded in the Vietnam War in September of 1968 so, he could relate to "Brothers in Arms" that you just reacted to very well. The Marshall Tucker Band was from Spartanburg South Carolina about 30 miles from where I live and was born and raised so I knew them as I had kin living throughout Spartanburg. The band was also unique for having a flute in most of their songs in which critics claimed would not work well in a Southern Rock Band, but MTB proved them wrong as the flute gave the band their signiture sound. The flute starts and finishes in Can't You See and you will agree that it adds texture to the song.
If havent looked at their song Sultans Of swing you should do that. There Mark plays one of the best guitar solo ever done. Here it is 👇👇👇 Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing (Alchemy Live)
Hi, love your channel. I recommend the song Calling Elvis from DIRE STRAITS Live "On The Night" 1992. It's one of my favorite performances. Cheers all the best from Australia 👍🎸🎸🎸
Check out ‘Calling Elvis’ from the ‘On the Night’ concert- the guitar playing is epic! Btw, Lindsey Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac plays electric guitar finger-style - watch ‘Go your own Way’ from ‘The Dance’!
Don't worry, I play bass too. When I play guitar, I use Mark's finger picking technique cos I habitually drop plectrums. It's not particularly difficult to get the hang of.
Hi Millie, Loving your reactions❤❤ You need to react to Dire Straits when they were playing live, showing the talent! Sultans of Swing and Telegraph Road from the Alchemy tour are best, in fact, they're some of the best live performances you'll ever see!
Bonjour de France Millie Merci pour ce partage magnifique Je te propose de faire entendre ''Antisocial'' du groupe Français TRUST ...maintes fois repris..une merveille !!
He wrote the song when Britain "invaded" the Falkland Islands off Argentina. Argentina claimed the island but, the people there are British subjects. It IS a protest song and the last part is the important part saying, "we are fools to make war on our brothers in arms"! The world is destroying itself over petty greed and corruption. This song still has a place today, maybe more than ever.
If you haven't already then give Dire Straits 'Sultans of Swing' live a go. Make sure it's the Alchemy one though as it's far superior. One of the best live performances ever caught on film! Mark Knopfler's guitar work is incredible in it.
Millie...
Dire Straits, LOVEBITES, and "Back To The Future", you always find what I like! "Brothers In Arms" is one of my all time favorite songs, it always gets me! Mark Knopfler is one of the guitarists, who doesn't play it, he celebrates it (David Gilmour, Eric Clapton being another examples). There are some pretty nice suggestions possible, I'll leave it at "Telegraph Road" (unless you don't react to "Sultans Of Swing", "Walk Of Life", "Money For Nothing", "Tunnel Of Love", or "Romeo And Juliet").
LOL, Eric Clapton and David Gilmour are mentioned more than once in other comments! That's purely coincidental! [This was in reference to the reaction from March 14th, 2023!]
If you wan't to watch other fingerstile guitarists, you should watch some one like Chet Atkins - also called mr. Nashville, or Jerry Reed. They played together many times. And they were the best.
You miss something in deed: you weren't be alive in the 80s to know the worst part of it: the years of IRA in Ireland, ETA in Spain, the Beirut conflict, the Iron Curtain, the Cold War, the fear to a nuclear holocaust. Usually people remember 80s like a decade to fun and joy. And it's true, but only partially. 80s had a dark side too. Hence songs like this, like Sting's "They Dance Alone" and much more. They tried to teach us something.
Love how Eric Clapton was able to restrain himself and let Mark Knopfler do his epic work! ;-) Two of the best guitar players ever! [Ooops, that was an old comment of mine! 1 year old!]
Eric Clapton isn't on this track. They borrowed some of his guitars and they've played this song live together, but not on the studio version. Unless you meant something else. 😊
If you really enjoyed this one, i strongly recommend you address some more songs Of Dire Straits. Mark Knopfler solo work is really good too, there is a reason why he is considered one of the best guitar players.
If you’re looking for other Dire Straits songs to review, here’s one of their tunes with a lively bass line that’s one of my favorites. Dire Straits “Industrial Disease” Love Over Gold (1982) ruclips.net/video/u_mF0DhDSlo/видео.htmlsi=t61bzU3r-3WNye_T
Finger style guitar... do check out Jeff Beck, absolute master. Any live performance will show his skills. He also plays off his base player very well.
You should react to the live performance of this, Dire Straits- Brothers and Arms (On The Night Live), also another Dire Straits song you should react to is Sultans of Swing
Miss Milli, this song is about the Falkland wars of one Maggie Thatcher. As most wars go, it was unnessesary and cruel, many good men died on both sides. Mr. Knopfler wrote this song after listening to veterans of this war. You Dear, be safe. Elmar from Germany
If you like bass, I would highly recommend taking a look at "Primus", Les Claypool is an insaneand unique bass-player. Probably my first choice would be "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver". Catchy song, and very funny music video.
Lindsay Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac and Mike Oldfield were both finger pluckers like Mark but not quite in his League one step down. Go your own way for Lindsay and Man in the Rain for Mike i suggest
I suggest you check out the version by the bands of H.M. Royal Marines, so much more poignant when played by the military, huge thanks to all ex and current personnel for their service 🇬🇧
Try the studio version from the LP - it's exactly the same version as this video version but it's got an extra two minutes on the end that they for some reason trimmed off this video. Having heard that, this version always sounds unfinished to me.
ITALIANO, MATTEO MANCUSO IS A YOUNG GUITAR GENIUS WHO PLAYS ELECTRIC GUITAR WITH HIS FINGERS. THE NEXT GENERATION OF GREATNESS. CHECK HIM OUT. GREAT REACTION MILLIE....CRACK ON GIRL !
I usually like your reaction videos so will try to be constructive here. You picked up SOME of the nuances in this track but missed a whole lot more that as a total package make this song what it is. It is not just about the bass or melancholic brilliance of Knopfler's guitar. I get you're a reactor and need to comment but would recommend that you either pause (then rewind just a bit), overlay your comments into your video or wait until the end to comment. What you missed was the rest of the musical accompaniment and the very powerful lyrics that go with the brilliant visuals/video. You can't react again, but I'd suggest listening and watching perhaps with the lyrics if you can't pick them up. It's a greater overall experience of this song.
It was written about a fatally wounded British Soldier in the Falklands as his life ebbed away his mates stayed with him. It’s been played at many serviceman’s funeral and I’ve seen many a strong man with tears in his eyes when this is played.

Your entitled to your opinion but that is all it is. As an ex Falklands veteran I choose to think otherwise.
Never knew this, is this genuine?
@TheTaffia well, Knopfler's direct inspiration for this song was actually The Falkland War and some notification made by his father on that but true that this is one of the greatest anti war songs of all time, sharing the ordinary soldier' perspective
Surely a sign of a strong man would be to express emotion when appropriate?
Mark is truly one of the greatest lead guitarists. He always makes his guitar sing along with him and the two are a match made in heaven. 🙋♂🙋♂
"We're fools to make war on our brothers in arms", such powerful lyrics
Our brothers in arms are not just our comrades but the enemy soldiers as well. That's so true. Stop the wars! Stop your dirty fucking wars!
It's about a soldier who is dying in the field. It's about the futility of war
You should not make war
You're only fighting a bunch of people who have been ordered by their superiors who sit back and don't get involved in all the pain and bleeding and dying.
Sometimes there are good reasons to fight. But that doesn't make the loss of life less tragic.
War Pigs!
We have just one world.
But we live in different ones.
An amazing line that sums up so many of the problems that exist in this world.
I grew up with my dad listening to Dire Straits. I didn't quite understand it back then, but as I grew up I understand it more and more. He wasn't a man of many words. Spot-on there. He played it in Birmingham in 2019 and the entire arena went silent at the first notes, very powerful.
This is played at many UK former service personnel funerals, especially those of us that served from '82 onwards I've heard it at Aussie funerals too it's a universal futility of war song.
Millie. The more you look at Dire Straits the more you will find.
TELEGRAPH ROAD should be next... 🇦🇺
I play this every Remembrance Day at 11am local time. It's a humbling song that chokes me up.
I get something in my eye whenever I hear this one.
Been binge watching your reactions Millie , soo great, but this one got me , my little brother died at age 49 , me and my other brother decided this was a perfect song for us at his funeral, we are still brothers in arms ❤

The Miami vice episode was “out where the buses don’t run” it played at the end
I am old, i am fan of Mark since 1977 and i am happy to see the young people make a video of him.
Scuse my english, i am french... 😞
As Mark himself sang, je suis désole 😀
Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac is also a finger style guitarist, he's great but no Knopfler.
I'd say Mark and Lindsey are on equal ground. They're just on different hills.
Buckingham is probably the most underrated guitarist ever. He matches up to anyone including Knopfler.
That was a moment of pure reflection on life and humanity... let there be peace on Earth!
God bless all our soldiers ❤ past and present, thank you xxx
You need to see the version done by the Royal Marines Band at the Royal Albert Hall a couple of years ago for a remembrance ceremony. Bloody amazing version.
Hey! You don't talk during the lyrics of Brothers in Arms!
Millie kinda talks all the time...😁
She needs to listen to it again for herself
She’s concentrated only on musić and perfect guitar play.
The music and the video are pure art.
Weird to think that I listened to this cassette over and over again in around 1985, when I was 11. Brothers In Arms is one of those songs that defines my childhood. There are only about 10 of them. Fantastic song.

Well said
Fully agree
maybe listen again and catch more of the words. "We're fools to make war on our brothers in arms"
Beautiful reaction. And so are you.❤
-We can see a classic scene with this song, on the TV show "Miami Vice" in the 1980's, (in last scene of the episode: 'Out Where the Buses Don't Run')
Must be one of Dire Straits best songs you have to understand the meaning of it to understand the song
Mark Knopfler is one of the all-time guitar greats. Dire Straits released six studio albums and a couple live albums. Mark has done ten movie soundtracks (including “The Princess Bride”) and just released his 10th solo album this month (April 12, 2024). There’s a lot to explore!
This song was in a Miami vice episode!
Yup, Knopfler is one of a kind when it comes to finger-picking his guitar. And yes, this song is about the war in Argentina. Bass rules.
You should check out Sultans of Swing @ Alchemy live. An absolutely amazing live performance

You did grab hold of the concept of watching you're mates dying while you still survive knowing at all that was lost by you and your lost bothers.
Nope, she's too busy talking over the entire video!!!
No TALKING
Quiet young lady
Song great.🇬🇧
Mark Knopler is definitely one of my favorite guitarists. And If you would like to see another great finger picking electric guitar player, watch or react to Fleetwood Mac's "I'm So Afraid" with Lindsay Buckingham on guitar and lead vocals. The song kind of has Pink Floyd vibes to it in my opinion.

Hi, love your channel. I recommend the song Calling Elvis from DIRE STRAITS Live "On The Night" 1992. It's one of my favorite performances. Cheers all the best from Australia 👍🎸🎸🎸
Agreed - ‘Calling Elvis’ is a brilliant track from that gig!
Check out ‘Calling Elvis’ from the ‘On the Night’ concert- the guitar playing is epic! Btw, Lindsey Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac plays electric guitar finger-style - watch ‘Go your own Way’ from ‘The Dance’!

Finger style guitar... do check out Jeff Beck, absolute master.

The bass wil walk you home

Miss Milli, this song is about the Falkland wars of one Maggie Thatcher. As most wars go, it was unnessesary and cruel, many good men died on both sides. Mr. Knopfler wrote this song after listening to veterans of this war.
You Dear, be safe.
Elmar from Germany
If you like bass, I would highly recommend taking a look at "Primus", Les Claypool is an insaneand unique bass-player. Probably my first choice would be "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver". Catchy song, and very funny music video.
Another amazing finger style electric guitarist is Lindsey Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac). Check out Big Love.
Lindsay Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac and Mike Oldfield were both finger pluckers like Mark but not quite in his League one step down. Go your own way for Lindsay and Man in the Rain for Mike i suggest
You would love Home Free's cover of this song.
HF really pays homage to this song, different but great respect to Mark and the song but awesome!!
Héllo de France Bonsoir regarder le live de 1993 encore plus émouvant 😊😊

Lindsay Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac is great finger picker
You should check out Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac, he has a very particular finger style as well.
Matteo Mancuso is a fingerstyle player to check out. Way faster than Eddie Van Halen with a pick.
money for nothing , so far away , tunnel of ,sultans of swing , mark knopfler in top of best guitarrist
I suggest you check out the version by the bands of H.M. Royal Marines, so much more poignant when played by the military, huge thanks to all ex and current personnel for their service 🇬🇧
Please react to Piper to the End by Mark Knopfler. Epic guitar....
Try the studio version from the LP - it's exactly the same version as this video version but it's got an extra two minutes on the end that they for some reason trimmed off this video. Having heard that, this version always sounds unfinished to me.
Steve Millar used to play his gat finger style a lot way back ,the steve miller band was awesome steve was awesome you should check him out ,.
ITALIANO, MATTEO MANCUSO IS A YOUNG GUITAR GENIUS WHO PLAYS ELECTRIC GUITAR WITH HIS FINGERS. THE NEXT GENERATION OF GREATNESS. CHECK HIM OUT. GREAT REACTION MILLIE....CRACK ON GIRL !

You should try romeo and dire strights
Talking Talking and a lot of bull
Do a reaction from the band (Pitty - Na sua estante) this song has an animation that you will definitely like😁😘
