The harsh reality of the Philippines is that there are so many heartbreaking stories from people in terrible situations that most will never get to hear but the longer you live there and the more people you meet, the more amazed you will be that all these people still get on with life and continue to smile, even when the odds are stacked against them...Respect

I've lived in tiny barren Cabra island, two hrs by pumpboat off bigger Lubang island, NW of Occ. Mindoro. Life even today is harsh with barely a source of potable water and power. Life in Phil remote islands is a test of will to survive and make do with what you have in there. Our elder women almost all worked as househelpers in Manila to send their children to school, while menfolks fished, planted garlic and peanuts. Almost no coco and fruit trees survive. Many of those sun tanned children are now professionals, including me. Thank you Finn for inspiring us that life is worth living despite the hardships.

Some people see the ugly side of oli's story but dont see the good in humanity that is epitomized by oli. He worked at 12 to help support his family and despite his hardships, he never mentioned anything for himself but for a brighter future for his sibling and a wish for his dad. He might not enter a classroom of a big university but he had a bigger classroom, life. I admire this guy more than the successful CEOs, a true inspiration.

Life of an islander is never easy. Their livelihood is very dependent mostly on fishing. The story that Oli shared is a story that is shared by many, if not most islanders, especially in remote areas. Since the Philippines is made up of 7,000+ islands, it's really difficult for the government to enforce the fishing regulations. Let's not forget that the Philippines is a developing country and does not have the resources needed for enforcements, unlike other more developed countries. Finn, It's great that you gave Oli this opportunity and this platform to share his story. Im sure that if you are willing to listen, you will meet more people like Oli, during your travels around the country. Take care and stay safe!

There's a lot here of the Filipino life not only "islanders". Also strikes a chord and hits close to home for me. We can live heaven on earth... Anywhere in this world and especially in tropical paradise like the Philippines where climate, flora and fauna can provide so much of people's needs. I admire countries that can provide their own people high levels of education and teach people skills without asking one family member to sacrifice their own chances of a better life. Olli is truly an example of self-sacrifice for the benefit of his family. I hope one day in the Philippines no child will have to leave school and work to help put food into their stomach or pay medical bills. I hope with modern technology no child will have to leave their family and home to get an education. It's been over 20 years since the first time I heard of internet classrooms -the Australian government guaranteeing each child living in remote places an education through online classrooms with a teacher (provided by the whole country through the distribution of taxes). No electricity? No fresh water? I love the human mind for making technology to provide for so much: from the sea, technology can bring electricity using the energy from the waves and filtration technology can make seawater potable (ok to drink). Thank you Olli and Finn for this lifestory. In paradise sometimes the smiles hide a lot of hardship and pain.

reviewed this vlog to the end...thank you so much for sharing Oli"s journey as a poor islander surviving life for family"s sake...yes the country has all the natural resources..but what makes life worse is the government is run by corrupt elitists people whose only purpose in running for government position is to rob and live a life of plunder ..using the position and resources for their own greedy schemes....this country will always be categorized as a "developing country" because of them

I can relate to Oli’s story. I have a similar story to his growing up in a small fishing community in the Philippines. I can recall growing up my father and the community using dynamite for fishing. One of my father fishing buddies died when he didn’t release the dynamite on time and blow up in his hand. I was in the second grade when this happened. Listening to Oli’s story brings back old memories. Thank you, Finn.

Philippines is so beautiful including its people but once you get you learn their (filipinos) story, you'll sometimes think if Philippines is really a beautiful place to live? Life is never fair but you gotta go with it.

Most people in Philippines experience hardship in life. I was one of them despite having a mom who works as a government employee and a dad who was a farmer. Sometimes I would blame God why I had to learn things the hard way. But not now. My hardships in life, especially in my childhood years shaped me to be a better person. And those hard times helped me to be strong, resilient and appreciate life more. Good decision to expose your daughter in the Philippines, she'll realise a lot. I hope you'll get the chance to do that. Godbless!

I can relate to Oli’s story of life. I, myself is an islander, after my graduation in grade school, my father send me to Manila to live with my aunt. I worked in their house taking care of everything and raising her children since birth. In return she send me to school. I have to take night school because I work during daytime. After many years of hardships and heartaches plus the homesickness, I graduated in college. Years after that I met my husband and he brought me here in the US. My family’s life is a lot better now. I build a nice house for Mother and father and I support them financially every month. Family is everything to us.

This brought tears to my heart because my own mom finished a 3rd grade education only so she can support her parents and 7 siblings. Just like Oli shared, she came home just to make sure her family is fed and clothe and that lasted only a very short stay - not working was never an option for my mom. Because of all her hard work, they lived a decent life. We are now in the U.S. for 42 yrs with God's help, I pray I can make it home to visit in May 2020. That hit me like a ton of bricks and I got choked up thinking about the sacrifices that my Lola and my dad''s siblings made to make sure he received an education. My dad was one of 9 children, raised in poverty in the Philippines, alone by my Lola. But their sacrifice gave me a very comfortable life in the USA. My dad only talks about this stuff when he drinks too much alcohol. So hearing Oli's story really hits home and gives me a greater appreciation for the sacrifices my family made.

I just found yours just few weeks ago. I am a film maker too but I am a multi-media artist. Never been back in the Philippines(Mindanao) since I left 40 years ago. Family first and always... Pinpin you are like a prophet in the modern world. You became the voice of the people and thus the voice of God for your vlogs expose the reality of life - the bare truth. The truth may touch us or even hurt us but what is important is how we are responding to the truth in the most positive way.

My father, in bicol, had a same situation with his father. He haven't met his siblings for a very long time until one day, this 2018, I found them on Facebook one was in Olongapo and the other one was in Mandaluyong. They were 7 siblings but now there are only 3 of them. My goal on Christmas is to reunite them. I am so excited because I know that my father will be very happy. That is my gift for him this Christmas :)

Wow... what an inspiration to us all.. oli reminds me of my experience in the Philippines.. I strived hard to better my life. My aim was to come to America to help my poor family.. I worked hard in the states for 42 years. I came here in the states when I was 22 years old.. Since then I was able to get most of my family to live in America. Now they are living the American dream
Thanks for sharing.. you are absolutely right. Oli is the real " human expedition "... an inspiration.... I hope for the best of him and his family..

Good job Finn! This is a much better documentary of some of the sad stories of the Filipinos whose stories where never heard by the majority yet truly inspiring. Your videos and the way you edit it is amazing. You've become a pro highlighting scenes and spots and showcasing the island at its best! 2 thumbs up to you! Enjoy every single moment of your adventure and stay in the 🇵🇭. Living with the locals, eat, sleep and do things with them is something they'll always appreciate for the rest of their lives. God bless you more with a good and compassionate ♥!

You will never know a person if you never know the story of his life.
Financial incapability, ignorance, and life difficulties motivates Oli to strive hard.
I admire him and his father to raise his family despite of everything.
    Hats off to this man.
from the bottom of my heart, I personally thank you very much Finn for sharing this story.
As always, you go beyond our expectations.

Never quit...even if you know how it will ends...never quit. Hope and dreams that some day, the situation will be better than what is now. In the process, you learn and it shapes you into the person that you are and pay it forward, by helping and lifting others. You must have a lot of heart, determination is what keeps you going...you do not fail, you only learn.

THanks for sharing your story Oli! But this shouldnt be a sad story If you live in an Island.
There maybe limited of food when it comes to meat.
But when it comes to vegetables and fruits, thats a different story. There are now millions of people world wide that are vegetarian and vegan.
There's only shortage of food when we think that meet is a necessity.
Maybe clean water is the only shortage on that island, For the rest i see abundance of basic human resources on that Island.
