Nice work! I love the 86 Series tractors. As a teenager in the late 70's I swathed with a 186 Hydro and did fall tillage with a 1586. Both tractors were very easy to operate. Again, nice restoration!
    All the best!

That’s awesome, I grew up driving a 1486. We couldn’t keep the transmission going, but she was a good tractor to drive. Thanks for sharing your video.

For it's time the 86 series tractors were awesome. A HUGE upgrade from the previous 66 series. However they lacked a syncho transmission and the doors should have opened the other way. My dad bought a new 1086 in 1979 and we kept it on the farm until about the mid 90s. It had over 9000 hours on it and we never touched the engine and had no other serious repairs on it.
Is that a tilt steering wheel in that cab taken from a 50 series tractor?

Your 1086 looks great. You put alot of effort and hours into it but, I didn't see you touch the motor, Trans or clutch. Did you tear it down that far and didn't freshen those things up? She looked to have quite a few hours on her before resto.. paint will only get you so far. Sorry for being a wet blanket.

I respectively disagree about the silver/gray frt wheels looking better. I worked at FARMALL from the fall of 1976 in the front axle assembly area then was laid-off briefly and rehired into production scheduling in the gear maching area directly across the main aisle from from axle assembly.
That shade of gray was first used on the 5088, 5288, 5488 with matching rear rims. I was tire/wheel/rim Buyer by then and really didn't like the dull gray. The brighter more silver of the rear rims was better in my opinion, or polished chrome like the 5-Millionth tractor.
BUT I do have to say this guy REALLY knows his way around a FARMALL TRACTOR!
I was laid-off the last time in 1980 or '81if I remember correctly. I was driving over the road for FARMALL'S contract carrier by then, did LOTS of special pickups of truckload stuff.
I even got into J.I. Case's Burlington, Iowa plant one day and later that day into Deere Dubuque's plant. Delivering a split load of BFG rear backhoe tires.
I keep hearing rumors about former FARMALL people gathering for lunch at various restaurants in Moline. Even though I live about 200 miles from there I would drive down to see how my old coworkers are doing.
Maybe someday I'll buy a 10 or 1486 to go with my 1954 FARMALL SUPER H Dad bought me about 1968, and I also have Dad's 1951 FARMALL M he bought brand new. I wish I could find the '54 Super M-TA he bought about 1960, but I WILL OWN one someday. But there is absolutely no chance I'll buy the piece of junk 1940 Deere B, or the '51 R diesel Dad owned for 3-4 months, a gutless turd and the rearend was as fragile as glass. Not sure what all exactly failed on Dad's '63 4010 that caused it to get sold right out of the repair shop. The four capscrews that held the rear pto stub shaft on the pto driveshaft came completely loose and it shifted itself from 540 to 1000 rpm which destroyed around $3000-$4000 worth of otherwise O-K parts. The 4010 was sold right out of the repair shop, the buyer wanted an M&W turbocharger installed which only needed less than about 9 months to destroy the transmission and final drives.
I still have the Cub Cadet 70 Dad bought about 1965, I have my '68 #72 that still runs great, and the 982 I bought about 1988 still runs O-K but I'm scared to death of that 20 hp Onan engine. I bought a Cub Cadet TANK ZERO TURN 8-9 years ago, the 27 hp Kawasaki in it runs great. I don't have that feeling of impending DOOM starting the Kawasaki or the Kohler's like I get starting the Onan.
Some day I may look for a 1486, I'll need a taller shop to get the cab inside. I think of ALL the days I had to walk home from doing fieldwork with our 4010 and just let it sit till Dad got home from work.

The black pillar posts and black interior was intentional. We think these tractors look better without the white posts and an all black interior is much cleaner looking. The black post will hopefully hide scratch more than the white also

Silver rims on the front look better, same with the black pillar posts, IH made both of these changes when they went to the 88 series. It’s all about individual preference.
