It's like hearing a teacher swear: at first you can't believe it, and then you can't get enough
If you only ever saw Late Night when it was on CBS you really missed a lot. The show was so much better when it was on NBC from 1982-93. CBS really killed what made the show so cutting-edge, creative, and hilarious.
Late Night was never on CBS. It was called Late Show.
dave wanted his clout/respected host gig...
Dave never lost his edge.
CBS killed it? Did Dave have creative control?
He had a rather brief, and even funnier morning show, before that.
keeping the lead-in for these is appreciated, thanks don.
I don't remember Dave doing this many of these. This is great.
wow, this is the longest and best late night youtube video i've ever seen by far. REALLY captures the spirit of the show. thanks so much, Don!!!
This is about my favorite one that I’ve seen, too. It was full of great stuff.
"(The guest to which Dave and Paul were referring was Valerie Perrine.)" - Touches like this are what I love about this channel.
Thanks Don! Under lockdown in Brooklyn. I appreciate the entertainment. Stay safe and healthy, homie.
Thanks for these videos. I see a lot of David in the current late night shows.
That bit about the hot coals is *way* ahead of its time comedically.
That MENSA relay just had me thinking WASH YOUR HANDS WASH YOUR HANDS DON'T TOUCH THAT!!
Your channel is bringing back a lot of fun memories to me. Good job.
Thanks for this, Don! You're a legend!
I forgot I totally dressed like 1984 Paul when I was in high school. What a flashback!
1:04:28 - I really got a chuckle out of that... such a great prediction!
There is an unedited F-bomb in this one! Dave says, "I am really fucked up right now." I love finding gems like that.
That’s from a pre-broadcast, pre-censored source.
“Key Guys”😝😝😝
LOL "Male Models Say The Darnedest Things" was great.
The look on Dave's face at 3:27, priceless!
the blue angels is my favorite! that was way better than watching actual footage of flying.
7:28 "Darn it, you kids, I've asked you 100 times to do your bicycling in the hallway." :)
5:23 "Jay Leno will be coming out here in a couple of minutes."
I spotted another reason to edit.
Thank you
The parallel universe shit was great to see while baked lol thankyou
This is hilarious
I missed that old set. The new stage they came up later just made things less comfortable.
It's similar to bands that become successful and then overproduce all of their subsequent records. The early, raw stuff is always better.
You had me at Edwin Newman, the king of dry wit.
I think that's the youngest I've ever seen Jim Downey (with the charcoal briquets). I didn't recognize him at first.
The Blue Angels killed. ROFL.
Great!
"These are all reasons why we've had to edit our show in the past... Jay Leno will be comin' out here in a few moments, so c'mon back after watching this."
A later addition to the edit list.
7:03 Dave is packing heat.
Great job don
The Manny's Music shout-out at the start!!!!!!
Some of what I see here strikes me as Conan sketches lol
That's because Dave did it before Conan. He was inspired by the bizarre, often surreal antics of Letterman, particularly on Dave's early shows. Fittingly, the best Conan sketches were the ones he did in the first 3 or 4 years of Late Night...just like Dave.
4:55: I love how huge the arrow is...😂
Wow. I don't remember this segment at all. I'm amazed they did it so many times and well into the mid to late 80s when I was watching every episode 2-3 times. Once when it aired, then usually at least the first segment and middle comedy segment, plus any good guests immediately after before going to bed, and then the good parts again the next morning waiting for the school bus, and then the whole show after school. But this doesn't ring a bell at all.
I vaguely remember the Tiger-Cam clip. And maybe the waffle hand. But I think I remember them from an anniversary show shown out of context.
I didn't watch the show as devotedly as you, but I also was a big fan and I also don't remember these. I think that part of the reason is that it is introduced in a low key fashion, without a Paul theme song or title card with succinct segment name, etc., so it is easy to overlook.
@@allendracabal0819 I have a feeling these never happened to be on shows with other memorable segments. Like never on a show like the Crispin Glover show, or things like the world's fastest typist, or the monkey lady. Or even a show with a Chris Elliott mid-show segment. Noting that would have made me go back and rewatch the show multiple times. And since this bit is not all that great either, it wouldn't be something that stuck with me
The parallel universe sketch could have been the inspiration for Sprockets.
Peter Jackson should take these to heart. I dont think he knows how or the reasoning behind editing film.
I finally got to finish this set, and it did not disappoint. Thanks as always, Don.
Speaking of edits, it reminds me of one episode where a joke bombed (on purpose, for sure) and Dave walked down to the editing suite and they edited the joke out of the show right then. You saw him finish one joke, then an obvious edit, then Dave headed down to remove the joke.
Does that sound familiar, or am I loopy? Perhaps I was hyp-no-tized.....
That’s here - ruclips.net/video/mRTdL9FSZTQ/видео.html
@@dongiller Well, I'm officially a doofus. I somehow missed that in your archive. I should probably dig deeper and see what else I missed.
Thanks, Don. It was great watching that again.
Nah, far from a doofus. You at least know it exists. I saw it some time ago, and I still find it fascinating. 😀
32:40 Dave playing Drunk Dave 😂
You cannot be cooler than Paul Shaffer.
I'm fascinated by the Raul Julia thrillcam bit. Did Dave use the name Raul Julia because the available stunt guy is Latino, or how did that work?... P.S. Thanks again for posting the Heather Matarazzo interview a while back. I will literally always be grateful to you. Have a good rest of your summer.
and then apparently when they were done editing, they just threw the unused footage in the dumpster behind the theater
That was Late Show.
Uncensored yes!
Where did he get it? Was this on a cable rerun?
Such fun. Great compilation! But where in the Description is Mr. Raul Julia!!! ha
Played each time by Rick "Scheckie" Scheckman, who is credited each time in the description. (I know you were joking, tho...)
11:36 ha 2for2 now, dogs not even looking at him 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😠🤣🤣
Great stuff of the early years!
Can you please upload more band songs if you have any. Beatles. The who. the stones. Pauls band is fantastic
This is amazing thank you. How was the "Foul show" clip not censored?
It’s from a pre-censored source.
If you had a big 8 foot satellite dish back then, you could watch the raw feed at 5 30 pm
Without a doubt, many of the funniest things I've seen on television in my life were on the David Letterman show. For years this was the only show I taped on my VCR.
@8:20 So that was the beginning of the Conspiracy Guy!
@32:00 How on Earth did you get the uncensored version of "The Night We Decided to Have a Kinda Really Relaxed Show"? Was that on a cable rerun?
Don Giller has connections with some of the people who worked on the show. He has elite-level access.
Geez....you'd think that with all those geniuses gathered togerher in one building that they could have at least...AT LEAST...teleported that danged soda to Dave.
Awesome collection as always! Thanks Don. Sorry for not doing the research myself, but do you know offhand if any LNwDL writers went to Conan?
Paul’s music assistant Chris Albers. He wasn’t an official LN writer, though at the time he contributed some Opening Remark jokes that Dave used. After some tv writing jobs elsewhere, he joined Conan’s writing staff in the mid-‘90s and remained until Conan moved to California for The Tonight Show.
Chris also served as the President of Writers Guild Association East.
Was Brian McConnachie a writer on the show at some point [referring to the 1983 clip]?
This whole comp is brilliant. Thanks.
He never was, but he did appear as a guest, uploaded here - ruclips.net/video/wDMV8NHT8yU/видео.html
And thanks!
I feel like Conan borrowed some of these ideas.
Conan is the first to admit he is a Letterman die hard.
@@CheefChaos Conan and Letterman are my all time favorites. To me, Conan should “take” from Letterman as much as he wants.🤷♂️👍
A bit of larceny, intentional or otherwise, is fairly common in the dog eat dog world of talk shows. A lot of Dave’s best stuff was lifted from Steve Allen who cribbed some of his classic bits from Ogg the Late Night Caveman.
@@sardonicus76Ogg did it best. Everybody who came later is just a poor imitator.
21:53 or a smartaz in the control room
Funnnny
4:25 Jim Downey ! 😉
My thought is, "why did it take an half-hour, for(whom I consider, the brilliant)Mr. Mulligan, to appear? Thank-you, Mr. Giller. P.S., the woman, who is not Andrea Jaeger, is, however, wearing Hal Grundman's(lol)shirt, is she not?
Hi Don, fantastic video as always! Is the bit where Dave swore on May 8, 1984 the only time he used those words to that extent or are there other instances? If there are other occasions where this has happened then I'd like to know and possibly if there's video footage of such occurrences? Thanks Don, you're the home for all things Letterman!
I’ve uploaded censored expletives, and I have other isolated words from sources I won’t be able to share for some time.
There’s also one raw promo that I had put up but since taken down because of other clips.
@@dongiller I'm still amazed you have the raw video of Jerry Lawler and Andy Kaufman with the curses included. I was waiting for the cookoo sound over the curses. lol. Really great.
MrAitraining It had been around on YT for years. Maybe it’s since disappeared. But the source I have is of a quality that hadn’t been seen. Ever.
Another question, there was a segment... Wasn't it a tigercam? It went right to Paul and attacked him. Was that a viewer mail thing? Or maybe part of this compilation that I haven't gotten to yet?
The latter.
Smart, funny, and sexy. I love Mensa women. I want to get to know Patty better.
I thought maybe he was gonna do "In The Year 2000"
Dave’s golf swing isn’t half bad!
They don't say his name, but I believe the guest in the headlock at 5:12 is Martin Scorcese.
It's Brian McConnachie. ID'd in the description.
These are all jokes, so most of the "guests" are played by staff members from the show.
What was that "suing the merchant marine choir" thing about? around 27:00
A long story. They were at in the hotel that was celebrating the 2nd anniversary special and were to perform “Hang On Sloopy” at the end. But right before, they abruptly left.
@@dongiller I can't really blame them. They have a reputation to protect.
Kevin Perry Not if they signed contacts legally binding them to perform as agreed.
You forgot to credit Biff with Al during the Gene Shalit bit.
4:08 inspiration for Eric Andre show?
1:10:29 I think Paul is referring to Superman the Movie (1978) when the 3 Krypton judges call the prisoners guilty with their huge heads looking down
Thanks for that suggestion. I was very confused by that.
4:10 hey that's ol Jack Handy of 'Deep Thoughts' ya?
No, that’s James Downey.
@@dongiller the charcoal guy sounds like the Deep thoughts with Jack Handy guy on SNL to me....
Johnathan Douglas Jack Handey is a real name. Wiki him. The charcoal guy is, again, James Downey. Different humans.
Could play him in a movie I guess....
@@dongiller I believe u actually... Just thought he sounded the same....
I'm really enjoying your videos thanks Don
Could someone tell me where I can find the full clip with the woman speaking swedish at 3:02, thanks
There is no full clip that exists, only what aired.
@@dongiller oh ok, thanks Don!
1:15:18 so great.
Hi Don, are there any interviews with Omar Sharif? If yes please please upload them.
I have seen a video of a collection where David said next up is Omar Sharif but it cut just before the interview; I think it was Meg Parson collection.
Two guest appearances: February 2, 1989, and May 9, 1991. In time.
Don Giller Are they uploaded on RUclips?! How can I find them please
I haven’t put them up yet. Whether others have, that’s for you to search.
Don Giller I searched everywhere they are not on the internet at all, unfortunately. Really hope you upload them one day, it will be really incredible. Thanks for your reply and for sharing all these wonderful & beautifully organized videos

Patti Atcha is great!

Beautiful, intelligent, and modest.
does anyoneknow who the swedish girl is in the clip after the tennis player. The girl who says "It's not swedish"
Lisbeth Anderson.
@@dongiller Thank you
@@dongiller Thank you
I thought Leon Pendarvis was filling in on 9/8/83.
Oops; that should be September 6, 1983. Correction made. Thanks.
@@dongiller you're welcome!
Did they forget to bleep Dave at 32:55?
That’s from a pre-broadcast source.
How did they get away with Letterman using the F word at 32:54???
Nobody reads my descriptions.
Who was standing on the chair because of the dog?
If memory serves, Jim Fox. In the description.
The first guy was speaking Greek!
What did he say?
The f woid!
