We used to have a copy of cabin boy we’d watch all the time just because me and my friend thought it was funny and our other friend hated it. We also only ate at buffets for the same reason.
Every time Dave had someone on the show who knew how to improv it was always gold. He was so good at guiding them along and setting them up for more laughs.
Don, thank you for another great collection! These take me back to when I faithfully watched the show every night, when the shoe was cutting edge and often brilliant.
Man this Don Giller made my decade. Haha I grew up sneaking outta bed and trying to get away with watching this show and I remember how funny Chris Elliot was but not much of the details it's so cool to binge these now!
I was in college by this time and tried to get some Letterman in any chance I could. Chris Elliott and show writer Gerry Mulligan were always funny. Thanks for the upload!

When Chris was on the Nerdist podcast, he told a story about how pissed off James Cameron was about the fake Abyss trailer he and Gerry showed. While they were filming, he (Chris) was one of the few actors Cameron never screamed at, but after this interview, he stopped speaking to Chris to this day.
Mr. Don Giller, you are Top Tier Curator-Editor!Your channel may be the best on the You Tube,Always Be Well,Good Sir!!:)I need to donate to your patreon ,sooner than later,Lord knows....
@@dongiller More kind words-I know I'm not "the Lone Ranger"that get's ensconced on your channel-but I certainly bumped up the algorithim of likes while I was enjoying the Teri Garr& Sandra Bernard epic appearances:)
These are great, Don. I remember the excitement, ever since the early 80s, of seeing Chris Elliot was about to do a segment - as a running character, a one-off or as a twisted version of himself - on Letterman. Do you have a PayPal account/address?
9:52 when they first come back from break and he's sweating after 3 minutes of standing and acting like a punch drunk confused boxer in his corner...that was the kind of laugh that makes the heart feel better afterward, but it damn near kills you first. Chris Elliott & Gerard Mulligan, perfect.
I feel like Dave was underrated and also the NBC show was so much more fun and less rigid but that was probably due to the time slot. Letterman never got over not getting The Tonight Show.
Am I wrong- or is that the then-Camille Donatacci from the actual "Club MTV" / now Camille Grammer from "The Real Houswives of Beverly Hills" dancing next to Elliott around the 1:08:45 mark?
these bits were great. i remember when they used to play that "bad bad bad bad boys" song by Gloria Estefan as their entrance music. then whenever i would hear that Mace song "feel so good" years later, i'd think of these two guys. hilarious!
The candid camera dance in the boxers and sparklers. That is SOOO Chris ! * remember the dance he would do all the time with the circus music and pause and say "Bananas" LOL
As identified in the description, Kathleen Ankers. She was the set and props designer for the show. She was also Library Lady for the NBC Bookmobile and Peggy, the Foul-Mouthed Chambermaid.
@@dongiller I missed it; sorry. Thanks for identifying her. One of my neighbors apparently did a number of appearances on the show, though I've yet to find him. I always thought Kathleen had a great voice.
jerrDon, You're the Best! Jerry Mulligan is the Best NON-Entity ever! I mean, Chris is already a straight-man. but... Totally Hidden Video predates future comic trends. "All our scenes were shot in Robert Goulet's swimming pool." Genius. "As you know, both Jerry and I are certified midwives."
He wrote for Dave for decades, retiring in 2004 but continued to appear on the show. He was also the show’s Segment Producer in the early ‘80s while still writing. And he was Head Writer while Steve O’Donnell took a sabbatical, Fall ‘84 to early ‘85. So, no, he wasn’t merely Chris’s “lackey.” He was a major part of Dave’s career.
Hahaha always hilarious! I had actually never seen the ones where Chirs' "brother" Bobby is with them. Anyone know who played him? I'm guessing just a guy from the stage crew or something.
Yep, curiosity led me to track that down. Don may have a better quality clip, but this is what preceded Chris and Jerry at 46:00 ruclips.net/video/c14dfImXqq8/видео.html
Chris's hop & bow kills me every time.
Chris Elliott is one of the most underrated people in show biz
We used to have a copy of cabin boy we’d watch all the time just because me and my friend thought it was funny and our other friend hated it. We also only ate at buffets for the same reason.
Oh, I know you're his mother....the familiar noise of your sensible shoes coming down the hall is unmistakable.
Pretty sure he's rated exactly as he should be. Gerard Mulligan on the other hand...
GET A LIFE was sooo funny too!
Chris's dad as well .. love this family!
So much so that that was a character!
Every time Dave had someone on the show who knew how to improv it was always gold. He was so good at guiding them along and setting them up for more laughs.
Totally, adds to the endless bafflement i felt seeing these as a kid

Brings back great Late Night late 80s memories for me. Thanks for posting!
Its a privilege to be able to relive these segments. _I hope that your channel is still here Jan 1st!!_
Still here and its March already 😅
Another great compilation
I'm embarrassed for NBC and SNL with how poorly they utilized Chris during that all too brief stint. A genius and a master.
i love the way Chris Elliot holds his hands in prayer whenever he's showing some piece of junk clip of his.
I love that...like he’s some auteur or something...😂

@@ryangettig274 So you’re the one. :)
I love how Gerard has basically one outfit.
I have all of Elliot's skits on VHS but have no way to view them
( if they're still even viewable)
so thank you Senor' Don
Perfect. Thanks!
Chris is one of top ten funniest people I've ever seen. Thanks very much.

I do, but I don’t solicit contributions. Nor do I refuse them. :)
Email’s in my YT channel’s “About” page.
And thanks! Just for asking.
This is damn hilarious … thanks for the upload Don!
Chris Elliot really was in 'The Abyss'. He plays a sonar operator doing his best not to crack up
Seth Gessinger yes he was quite into the role and very animated.
Underrated actor and comedian!
My favorite surprise Chris Elliot appearance was in the dead serious Manhunter.
Great stuff....thanks Don.
That standing routine just hilarious!
Gerard has a shot at the world record for standing as Chris’ trainer.
Gerry:”but I didn’t have the pressure on me like Chris”😆
😅😅 12:00
Thanks for sharing.
god this is making me want to rewatch cabin boy

I love how at 1:08:50 Brother Bob is just standing drinking coffee during Club MTV.
Thanks for this hilarious stuff. I saw most of it back in the day but had forgotten about it. Genius.
0:09 - Well, he called it. Even back in the late 80's he somehow knew.
I feel like Dave was underrated and also the NBC show was so much more fun and less rigid but that was probably due to the time slot. Letterman never got over not getting The Tonight Show.
Dave’s Late Night won four Emmys and a Peabody. Hardly underrated.
@@dongillerQuite a haul!
Chris is a comedic genius!!!!!
8:01 I have not heard the phrase “McDonald Land cookies” since i was a toddler 😅
And 12:12 lorraine bracco wow 🙆🏻♀️🔥
Chris Elliot was strictly for the hip crowd as was this show at the time. I was grossly underpaid for this comment.
Am I wrong- or is that the then-Camille Donatacci from the actual "Club MTV" / now Camille Grammer from "The Real Houswives of Beverly Hills" dancing next to Elliott around the 1:08:45 mark?
13:12 Coincidentally, Tommy John IS actually 80 as I type this. We must be The Children cuz we are the future.
It's official. This is my favorite Laurie Guthrie appearance on the show. 50:22
I await the Laurie Guthrie Collection!
“You packed our trunks, right? Good.” 🤣
don giller can you do an edit of all chris elliot's bouncing bows pretty please
Unlikely at the moment. Seems pointless, honestly.
Do you know how many hours that would take? More like months.
Chris and Gerry are the best
This is the America version of Monty Python. Surreal humour. He'd have fit in well with them.
Or the kids on the hall
Great stuff. Sorry I missed it the first time around. I had a job then.
That's why they invented VCRs.
Amazing, I saw "the Abyss" sketch when it first aired when I was 14, just as I remember it.
The best part is that Chris is actually in the real movie.
Yess thank you Don Giller you rule
The going to Prison bit was my favorite lol
What song does the band play going to commercial after the Dangerous Liaisons clip?
Ajworden little Latin Lupe lu
I guess the Prison bit didn't go over too well with the higher ups as they didn't do any follow up bits on it.
Or Chris and Gerry had prepared just that one segment.
these bits were great. i remember when they used to play that "bad bad bad bad boys" song by Gloria Estefan as their entrance music. then whenever i would hear that Mace song "feel so good" years later, i'd think of these two guys. hilarious!
This is an early Christmas present!!!!
Legal dms
The candid camera dance in the boxers and sparklers. That is SOOO Chris ! * remember the dance he would do all the time with the circus music and pause and say "Bananas" LOL
That’s in my Chris Elliott as Marlon Brando collection elsewhere on this channel.
@@dongiller thanks!
Magnificent
The pencil flip at 1:13:56
Did the Elliott/Mulligan teaming come due to Adam Resnick moving on (I don't know if he did) or was it just a parallel teamup for Chris?
I think parallel. Adam may have helped write those bits.
@@dongiller Thank you again, Don, for providing not only the resource of your video collection but your generous knowledge!
Why is he wearing an ASTROS hat?
Why not?
Who is the older actress who appears in the Dangerous Liaison sketch? She was seen often - one of the mystery actors of the show.
As identified in the description, Kathleen Ankers. She was the set and props designer for the show. She was also Library Lady for the NBC Bookmobile and Peggy, the Foul-Mouthed Chambermaid.

@@dongiller Michael McGuire is the name. Various appearances in the sort of stock ensembles that would come and go.
Thanks. Late Night or Late Show?
So so dumb. I love it!
When these were new the people looked old and now they look young.
Didn't the lady in the play used to be the book lady? she was rolled out with books on shelves? she was brave to agree to that role.
That’s Kathleen Ankers, and yes.
Lorraine was looking at Dave like 😍. 😂🤷🏻♂️
I wonder if Chris Elliott's brother had to get a SAG card for just standing in the background holding a cup of coffee.
You deserve anything you want for Christmas, Don.
at 34:00 did Dave actually make Chris break character and laugh?
10:43 & 11:32
A 35 year old Lorraine Bracco. Gorgeous!
Vinchenzo C For days!😄
Nice, Goodfellas nice.
People might be surprised to learn that Chris wasn't wearing those pants for comedic effect - those are actually his pants.
Little known fact, they were made of cheese.
Roomy.
7:50 this was just gold here! "McDonaldland cookies" LOL !!
Same!!! Unlocked some memories, a superb detail
They even got their own theme music toward the end.

Gerry. :)
The way he pushed that dude out of the way!
Dangerous Lesions.
Chris’ brother Bobby sounds just like their dad Bob Elliott.
00:10 No, Dave, that'll never happen.
Why did they boo O.J. Simpson in 1989?
I also don't know why he said if we wanted Elvis We would get elvis cause Elvis would have been dead by this time
Rudolf Steiner school?!
"Get out" 4:20
so what did Gerard even _do_ on that show? was that his sole function - to play lackey to Elliot's wacky schemes??
He wrote for Dave for decades, retiring in 2004 but continued to appear on the show. He was also the show’s Segment Producer in the early ‘80s while still writing. And he was Head Writer while Steve O’Donnell took a sabbatical, Fall ‘84 to early ‘85.

Any more questions, class?
"...come on guys, get off me! Enough is enough."
Love how Chris is decked out in batman shit - '89 4 life baby!!!!
Ellaine Bracco? Sister of Lorraine?
Jackson Browne was fucking awesome
Pure genius.
Gerard always dresses up.
Dave has no respect for the fourth wall.
I bet Chris would wear a different baseball cap today.
Tommy John, White Sox great.
Hahaha always hilarious!
I had actually never seen the ones where Chirs' "brother" Bobby is with them. Anyone know who played him?
I'm guessing just a guy from the stage crew or something.
Nobody reads my descriptions.
Don Giller Haha I gotcha Don.
So who is Bob Elliott Jr? Without looking it up, is it actually Chris' brother?
firepower782 It is indeed.
Don Giller Ahh...Thanks!
