Larry “Bud” Melman (Calvert DeForest) was a legend.
I am dying, he's hilarious
Mr. Giller, these uploads are a national treasure! Thank you for the memories. Your hard work and attention to detail is much appreciated!
Thanks!!
I miss Letterman and the late night shows that were actually funny and entertaining.
You're doing God's work sir. I'm glad it all exists. Couldn't be better.
OMG I am in Heaven watching these. It really brings me back. I think these etiquette tips were the best part of Letterman's show.
Heres an etiquette tip: Under no circumstances should one use the word "literally".
@@nathanworthington4451 he never

This stuff is timeless lol.. I loved these eps when I was a kid, and it still punches.
Brought back memories of late nights during my childhood, Dave was our favorite. 😁😄👍
"Late Night" was my favorite talk show of all time. Dave and Conan. It was like the renegade talk show.
The episode with Courtroom Etiquette was the very first Late Night I ever watched. I was hooked. I didn’t get much sleep in high school after that. Thanks for posting these!
Larry Bud's genius lives on. Love these.
Thanks for all the work you put in those videos Mr Giller, it's much appreciated
Thanks!!
@@dongiller yes thanks! Where oh where did you dig these up? Many great memories and still funny!
CJ They’re all from my collection. There are some links in my “About” page in this channel that gives some back-story to it.
@@CJ-uo5cl I have always wondered this about all past things. Are we just lucky some people have, say, every single episode of Walker Texas ranger taped on vhs??
Great stuff. Thank you! "Tatter-tots" remains one of the funniest things I've ever heard, Letterman or not.
Letterman moved himself in a tiny mobile studio at the back of the first taxi and having a steak and a glass of wine with it was epic lol
Chris Elliott LAUGHING was the funniest thing about this LMAO hahaha omg I was dying cuz you can HEAR him giggling too! He even tried to nudge LBM with his elbow beforehand hahaha
He must have forgot he was miked up during that car buying sketch.😂
I've been saving this one for a rainy day. So good.
I have been looking for ‘Lifeboat Etiquette’ for years. I finally searched ‘Larry Bud Melman’ and found your etiquette mix. Thank you. My son is doing a project on choosing survivors on a lifeboat for a college assignment.
Great show, before he became just another Democrat mouthpiece bashing President Bush. MY president...don't entertainers see that they stand to lose 50% of their demographic the minute they start bashing either party? I truly loved this show,so thanks for putting these collections together.
I haven't seen a lot of the 1982-1985 Late Night era, other than highlights that were shown on anniversary specials, and clips that I've started watching recently on this channel and on the Letterman channel. And even though I was a frequent viewer of Late Night from about 1986 or 1987 onward, I never realized just how unbelievably funny Calvert DeForest (Larry 'Bud' Melman) was in the earliest years of the show. The clips in this video from 1982 are some of the funniest Letterman clips I've seen, and it's largely due to DeForest's, um, let's say "unique" acting style. I get the sense that he probably had no idea why people found him so funny. Thanks, Mr. Giller, for posting this wonderful collection!
I have been looking forever for the segments where David Letterman would answer viewer's mail in person. That was HILARIOUS! The segment that I'm especially anxious to find is the one where they got a letter from a young boy who was complaining about all the shoes his older sister owned. Sure enough, Letterman showed up (unannounced) to the kid's home and proceeded to invade the girl's bedroom (with her kid brother grinning ear to ear) and started pulling out ALL the girl's shoes, while the film crew sat on her bed! When the girl got home and found out what was happening it was one of the funniest things I have seen in all of my 63 years, lol!
This’ll refresh your memory:

Don, thanks SO much for these! Larry Bud always gets me in hysterics!
Megathanks for posting this comprehensive collection!!! 🤣👍
It's so cool to see these after a hundred years, thank you!!
What a masterpiece.
Thank you for this!!! Great memories of late nights!
I remember in college, I had an Oral Interpretation class, and I literally read some of Dave's etiquette. The prof wrote, "Interesting selection". 😂😂😂😂😂
Larry Bud hyperventilating with his face covered in leeches on a plane 😂😂😂😂😂 master class!
Just realized Randolph the cab driver was Gerald Mulligan! He was great!!
Classic compilation. Greatness from Dave and Don Giller...
Don for doing the archiving awesomeness this material truly deserves.
Great stuff Don! Watched hundreds of hours of your posts. Brilliant presentation!
Peace from Montreal.
Thanks!!
Calvert equals instant like.
YES! This one is a must! Thank you, sir!
We are all in your debt, Mr. Giller. Many thanks.
It’s weird not to see him in his sneakers. I used to want to dress like Dave when I was a kid. College corporate geek. Classic late night host.
Those early days on NBC were the best for Letterman. Everything was new and fresh, the band really rocked as a small ensemble, and the relatively tiny studio put the audience right in front of Letterman where he could feed off their raucous energy. The CBS show was too big in every sense, and it weighed him and his comedy down.
Dead on in all regards.
I was a die-hard Letterman watcher, but the move to CBS destroyed the show, and not slowly.
After the first show, I told my girlfriend that I believed this guy would be around a while. He's still here, and we're still together.. 41 years.. Ha! Love Dave
unless you were too young and didn't catch the show until it was on cbs then you would've had no idea what the nbc show was like and could only judge it on its merits at the time. this was my situation. after watching these nbc shows i'd say the later cbs stuff was a more mature kind of thing. still funny though.
Tell kbbkukuiytyyiylulllutuilloooo
This is a big one!! Much thanks on your hard work with these compilations!!!!
That's what they said.
Vintage stuff! Well done, bringing these memories back
I thought Calvin as Kenny the Gardener was a high point, but I think he's even better here. The way he derails bit after bit is just the best.
`nice, to see Mr. Mulligan, as always! Oh-and, Ms. Markoe!
Beautiful videos mr don giller truly original no need to explain or interrupt nicely done
2:01:32 LMAO @ Larry Bud immediately launching into a speech about the treatment of turkeys in factories, so good
So glad they showed that there was actually a plate of donuts backstage. Of all the busted gags in the bit, they made damn sure to have a nice variety of donuts.
Larry Bud just kills me! So unintentionally funny!
I'm so high, I feel like I'm watching this from the future.
Genius! Just everything... Genius!
My college days and early 20’s…miss this stuff.
I only know a lot of the earliest bits from the Late Night with David Letterman: The Book. Nice to finally see them.
You just gave me an idea.
@@dongiller I can't wait to see what it is!
It’d just build on what you wrote: except for the Opening Remarks, it’d be more videos from the book. Though I’ve already uploaded a few of them (Frank and Fred Collection, They Took My Show Away).
@@dongiller You'll have to include the times Dave remarked about the book itself- particularly the sloppy editing.
timharrod I could, but... :)
"Dont mind me ill just dance by myself," he says! Haha if he wasnt on show id still say i was in new york
My first experience watching the Etiquette series is the Subway Etiquette.
Taxi Etiquette plays like a 1975 SNL skit.
Larry was excellent :-))
The courtroom etiquette sketch is dire! The audience were asleep that night. Dave is squirming at every awkward silence...
As if it wasn't funny enough, you've got Larry Bud Melman saying his lines at the wrong time and mispronouncing No Doze and Tater-tots.
Thanks Don, for posting stuff from the early episodes! I didn't start watching until 85/86, and only caught a handful of the older episodes during the writers strikes.
Everyone thinks Calvert was just reading cue cards, but that was Larry Bud, it was part of the act just like his genius lack of timing. He had to have at least been a vaudeville star at some point and the rest was just way over our heads!
Pretty much off from the start. He was indeed just reading cue cards.
I have developed such a huuuuuge crush on Letterman!!!!💙💛💙💛😍😍😍😍😍
The Late Night Show was actually an institution back then and Must See TV for college students. Now it's more of an afterthought.
Thus this channel.
Best cab advice ever! Sure assure a great experience. Uber’s too!
Dave doesn't make me laugh, but I still love the guy!
You must live a very dreary life if Letterman's never made you laugh
I think David is recalling his first cab rides in the City. 😉
Chris Elliott covering his mouth and turning to try not to laugh at Larry in a couple of those early skits
Nobody reads my descriptions.
@@dongiller Sorry - I see, #9 in your list :) ....and 18
This is great 😂
48:03 - Notice how Chris Elliott is trying to hold his laughter in after Larry 'Bud' Melman's "Tatter-Tots" remark.
Paul Shaffer too.
Hilarious!! I didn't pick up the show much before 84 or 85 (Anton Fig year) and I missed a lot of this! I think I remember Talk Show Etiquette from the book....
Anton joined the band in ‘86. :)
@@dongiller Ah! I was there for some of Steve's run!
Gerald Mulligan sighting!
Gerard, actually.
I woke up @ 1:00 am watching this😂
Letterman had the greatest comic timing ever.
Melman somehow had the second best and the worst.
God bless Larry Bud....
Regarding the end of Airplane Etiquette, do you happen to know what lines were cut off, or other instances of Dave being upset at Pete for a premature applause signal?
Calvert looks like he's grown more hair in the Holiday Entertaining Guide.
Calvert was not a good actor, but he always approached his parts with such gusto that it was always funny even when the jokes were bombing. Also, it's funny to see that there was someone who could make Chris Elliot break character, too.

@4:37 😂 this was literally before Walkmans became popular. Nowadays most people get in Ubers with Headphones in their ears
Developed in 1979, the Walkman tore through the global market in 1980. So this was after, not before.
Jumpseats in the NYC cab. -Who knew?
1:25:57 Life Boat Etiquette is blowing my mind.
"I'll put daylight right through ya."
Bhahahaha
This is a much needed surprise after a very long day. Many thanks.
Curious....is the "don't die" reference from Talk Show Etiquette a reference to the Dick Cavett episode where a fitness guru kind of guy died during the taping of the show?
Maybe, probably. Don’t know for sure.
And thanks!
Two things (as of now.. I'm still going through these..
1) That "Hyperventilating" Larry Bud was something I've never seen. Did he do that often during his early appearances?
2) Was "Dave" an actual periodical?
"Dave", the magazine, was created by RFK Jr.
Competed with GQ and Sassy
55:00 Some Nose Dose. lol No Doze* and for a second it sort of maybe looked like a bag of cocaine.
Calvert gave a lot of strange line readings over the years, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite like 17:47.
Acting!!
Of a sort...
I believe that was borrowed from Jackie Gleason's "petrified/at a loss for words" shtick.
If just one person on late night was as funny as Dave was ...we'd be ok ! Ok, CONAN you win ...but what happened to all the fun in the world ?
Don, the bum in the subway segment, I'm 99.9% sure is Carl "oldy" Olsen, the Late Night with Conan O'Brien equivalent of Larry Bud.
The actor’s real name was William Preston.
"A dead guest is a dull guest."
I remembered having a HUGE crush on Paul Shaffer as a pre-teen and now I see why. So cute!
48:02 Chris Elliot laughing
So cool seeing Emperor Palpatine show up at 1:38:10!
I do hope death does look like Calvert
Should have asked the cab driver where the ducks in the lake go during the winter. I’m only to minute # 7 so far. Still hoping.
THE BEST manager England never had goodnight god bless " Big Head "
51:53 ... finest fake scream in late-night history.
82 84 best letterman and larry "bud"..
10:51 that guy asked for a coke but the vender gave him a pepsi, lol
At 23:51 Larry Bud is behind Dave on the subway car. Then, without a break in the taping or editing, at 23:54 he has changed into someone else and appears soon after farther up in the car. How did they do that?
What? Larry stays in the same place. Nice eyeballs.
grew up with dave and carson..the best..nothing good after that...
OMG, a young Chris Elliott!! 1:37:00 For some reason I was thinking he was an SNL writer instead of Letterman (were some on both??)
Chris was an SNL cast member during the 1994-95 season. Likely a writer as well.
But his lasting legacy will always be his eight-year employment on Late Night, 1982 to 1990.
@@dongiller Never knew he was on SNL! I was out of the country that year!
2:23:00 what’s the name of the ‘courtroom etiquette’ introduction music?
The theme from “Perry Mason” - ruclips.net/video/xOpxLa9PPto/видео.html
@@dongiller omg thank you ❤️❤️❤️ never heard it but it is a beautiful piece
Social distancing from the way back machine. 51:38
Don Giller 4 president
2:03:30 Ye, Zoom in and get Cindy Lauper out of that shot, she aint talkin. Seems like a mistake in hindsight.
2:09:17 Doctor My Eyes, Im Surprised I caught that one.
Michael Shannon as David Letterman.
Hey Don, was bud ever really on Hollywood Squares?
There’s a clip of him “hosting” it for just a minute or two.
2:41:00 Did that guy really leave his wallet? lol
😭🥳😭
Black dude in the "Subway Etiquette" skit reminds me of P. Diddy (aka Puffy , Puff Daddy, Sean "Puffy" Combs, Diddy - 'cause not sure back when - did he even rap & stuff then ? 😆 )& Kool Moe Dee mixed 😆
That “black dude” was Hiram Bullock, the house band’s guitarist extraordinaire.
48:02 “Tatter tots.”
Notice Chris Elliott losing it at 1:05:03.
