I remember many years ago you did a -40 trip. My friend who grew up in Florida thought it was inconceivable like out of a science fiction movie. He watched that vid and to this day calls you “The -40 Guy”
It was other-worldly on that trip. I like being the "-40º Guy" !!!

Bean's back! What a good boy. He makes me laugh with his resting grumpy face. I remember him only actually getting grouchy when he thought you were going to take his BBQ rib away haha
That face is his calling card. My Grand Dog. He does have food issues when it comes to bones.

As Winter approaches, I watched your Winter Camping Trip again. I can see that your are in your zone. I think that Winter takes us to a primal place and survival mode kicks in. You just feel more aware and alive. Always a pleasure!

welcome back into wilderness..i was in Berlin for new year..meine mutter and bruder wohnt in Berlin..returned jan.14tth and i went to snow backpacking for night after day..and last weekend another one..

I have to say, that's a little cold even for this Yooper. Negative 24 and a windchill you two are hardy to handle that, thanks for taking us with ya on the adventure. 🧊
It was frosty goodness for sure!!! Had the Hantuu bat but it survived for another trip.
That furry hat, I'm sure helped keep the windchill at bay.

Righto. Safe and good.
Some good hang-time right there Shug! That's a chilly one for sure and for certain. Coldest I've gone through (without shelter) is -10F and 20mph winds. Dad and I were moose hunting in the Alaskan Arctic. It wasn't safe to cross the river (to get to camp), so we had to tough it out all night in the bend of a frozen river. All of the camping gear was in camp. I had a canvas snowmobile cover and a tarp type tube shelter. We put the machines nose to nose to act as a wind break, piled some boughs of willow on the ice and tried to get a little sleep (NOPE). So, we lit a fire and spent the night tending the fire. That was our first "cheating death" episode for that hunt, there were two more. God is good.
Nice to be able to improvise and come out alive!
I also do a layered underquilt sandwich when doing BWCA winter camping. Works great! Double up a 20 degree, 30 degree and throw a thermarest z lite foam pad in the bottom. I get way better sleep in a hammock vs hot tent. Getting up every 2 hours feeding the stove is a pain and all you get is wet snow. Been there done that. Once you go hammock you never go back.
Layering works real good. Funny on the hot stove. I may rent one someday from an outfitter to see if I like it. But that constant feeding.....hmmmmm

Nice classy trip! Not for amateurs. As a former PowWow Trail clearing crew member/leader, have to say balancing a log on the chin near a silky saw ads an extra dimension of excitement.
I miss the Pow Wow trail. Did it on a very hot July 5th with black fly infestation in 2003 or 2004 or so.
When Shug said "...with the snow...when you hollar....it just Whoosh....BLALALALALA...".....I felt that.

Man I didn’t like that kind of weather even when we had a diesel stove to heat our gp medium tents in Germany for the Army . Yes the gear sucked we had to use in the 80’s but I was almost 40 years younger too. You definitely have some cold weather endurance. Respect to you have fun on those outings and stay safe.

It's beautiful up there! Great trail food! Gourmet food all the way! Wow, the -24F overnight temperatures are a real test of your gear! The hammock sleeping sounds kind of fun. I like the wind break you set up. The chili mac and cheese looked good. That is a big fox! Foil is the best campers friend for cooking over the fire. This was fun to watch. Thanks. Bean is a real cute pup.

Nothing beats that old black iron skillet, but not likely possible except in the winter with a pulk? Disregarding vehicle camping, of course. Thanks for another fantastic video.
