Typically in basic ass standard levels, only not making them step one in a progressive power up when that would break the level - One towards the start, one at the checkpoint, one at the second checkpoint leading to the boss fight if there is one. And never putting them into hidden blocks even when I know Nintendo would put a hidden block with a mushroom there.
@@rashiroselin The bob-omb goes boom, destroying the block block allowing the muncher to fall on the p-switch turning the floor into shiny, yet deadly coins.
Mushrooms are also great in mechanisms. They can move and hit note blocks in an area you dont want mario to travel himself. The progressive powerup also allows some cool things since they move but fire flowers don't, so you can get machines that act differently depending on the player's progress. But I assume you'll cover that in a video about progressive powerups (?)
Your tips for not overusing the mushroom in traditional levels were actually so useful. I’ve been using them wrong this whole time, but now I can make my level a lot better! Thanks!
I really love this series man! The consistency of it is wonderful. Every little thing is explained, even if it applies for pretty much everything. Every video feels like it was meant for a newcomer, and that’s hard to do.
One interesting property of super mushrooms (and technically other power ups) is that if they get crushed they will respawn when you reload a room (via a pipe or door), but if they fall down a pit they disappear forever. This is worth noting for super mushrooms because they can easily walk themselves off edges. I actually made a puzzle around this mechanic a couple months back so here's my shameless plug for "Mushroom Preservation Puzzle" SWX-J15-5KG
The parachuting winged mushroom not resuming its basic behavior is my personal favorite anime plot twist of 2020. Definitely deserves a spot on the top 10.
I have seen all of your item break downs thanks Tobias bergdorf I enjoy this series but you do take long to upload a video anyway traditional levels are my fav levels!

How about creating a level where you have to avoid a mushroom (or any power-up) at all costs? Also, thank you for teaching me about progressive power-ups. I legit could never figure out how people did that.
In SMW "block blocks" are replaced by turn blocks. I had to search this up because I wasn't completely sure but yeah it is. Also there was an aching absence of alliteration in this video, although after a while there was a tiny bit. 🤏
I almost never have any ideas to specifically require the super mushroom, unless such requires opening up a secret path or busting up a block to get to a question block containing a better power up or some other key item.
Strange to think a good portion of your audience wasn't born when Badgers Badgers came out. To anyone interested look for the original and watch until the end
I disagree with 4:34. A free, no-challenge Mushroom at the start is a courtesy if the player has to learn my level's unique mechanics. Dying to the first Goomba because they don't know it's in the Blaster, or because they don't know how Night Airship theme works, is going to feel like fake difficulty.

I mainly have key coins as a reward system and you need a power up like the mushroom to reach the key door where the reward is
To get ideas, these shrooms are the best.

Well superbly of course
To make Mario grow...
I can’t believe it. An item that doesn’t resume basic behavior when it lands. This is one for the history books, folks
Lol
Say it with me! It descends slowly towards the ground and resumes its basi- wait WHAT!?
