You missed that mario will jump on a semi solid white platform in Super Mario Bros gamestyle if he ducks a while on it. Also the bridge cannot overlap many things (they will be removed, when placing a bridge on it).
Mostly for decoration and their basic functionality, but there are also quirks like how snake blocks can pass through them from above to activate stuff that players can't reach.
@@mariasaraleguy6755 there are no one-way door parts. Hidden block half works and donut block in 3D World works for below and tilted seesaw works for the flanks.
You forgot 1 feature of the semisolid platform - In the SMB3 theme, as a reference to the White platform trick (I have seen this in a troll level below spikes), Mario will jump a little bit after crouching on a white semisolid platform for a few seconds!
The semi-solid platforms are integral in some course designs, allowing for some areas to be more compact. I like to make extensive use of them, and I hope the devs make sloped semi-solids.
5:10 Challenge accepted, semi-solids... 1. Can protect you from spikes from the top but not the bottom or sides (good in Kaizos) 2. Technically the same as the vertical 1-way, but specifically you can use them to force lower jumps without killing the player 3. Can be used to allow mario to get a single helmet from below (good if you only want them to be able to wear it, not throw it) 4. Can be used to block link's arrows as they fall while still letting them go from below
The number 1 tip for new makers is to make use of semisolids. They are so versatile. They offer different platforms to stand on, different backgrounds, and good decorations for either the floor or ceiling. Thank you for this breakdown on this incredibly useful object.
Your awesome alliterative literary rarity is strangely soothing, increasing imagination and making for cognitive course creation and correction. Thank you for that!
Pssh I already know what he'll say. It has two variants: Winged and parachute. Winged versions move and bob up and down. Parachute versions glide down and then resume its basic behavior when it hits the ground.
1:36 this isn’t always true. When placing two semisolids with the same top positioning (i.e. what you’ve done here), the game doesn’t really know what to do. It may be the last placed in the editor and the thumbnail, then swap around when performing a clear check. They can also sometimes randomly swap while editing. This is a nightmare to try and sort out! Anyway excellent and informative video as always. I love semisolids!
I absolutly love your videos especially these item breakdown ones Tobias. I enjoy them quite a lot. just wondering can ya make a video on how to come up with fun puzzle level ideas in the future?
Some extra notes: * In the SMB3 ground theme, holding duck on the white semisolid for an extended time period will make Mario perform a small hop. * Using mushroom stems as "support beams" is extra useful in the airship theme, where they have a metallic appearance. * If your semisolid goes all the way to the top of the screen, make sure players can't get on top of them and get softlocked!
I was always hoping that bridges recieve the functionality of being semisolid slopes, since those exist in the main series games, make sense for that functionality, and could retain their original behavior without the need to add an entirely new item.
Damn Toby, you make such Good videos, even with this type of element you come up with something very intresting and funny to tell. Kudos and keep it up!
Ok so heres my big idea for the next update. Semi solids, but in front. And they cover up what's going on behind. They alredy exist in new super Mario bros

Paid a happy return visit due to a comment reply notification. One-Way Walls and Twisters work together with semi-solids to create suction magnets, likely shown in the Twister item breakdown. I like to use it with Link to activate switches and reach enemies blocked by terrain. The semi-solid platforms are also useful for memory challenges, involving indicating where it is safe to land and where it isn't. Object permanence can be surprisingly difficult during intense boss battles in arenas with vertical area to move around. Also, mushroom platforms are just wonderful in underground theme levels.
Hey i have ideas for what some placeable decorations (not the ones that spawn randomly) for the classic game styles on ground theme: 1 Luigi statue to reference the year of luigi (variants include all other characters) 2 Shadow blocks. These arent technically decoration, but still, they would be nice. Theyre basically the solid ground tiles, but are able to be walked through in all directions. They only show a small area around you, and are only seen when actually wlaking through it
At 4:25 in the video there is an example of using semisolids to make an interior. I want to use this in my level as the player drops down a pipe and falls to the bottom of the sub world. I can’t do this though because semisolids have a top that Mario can stand on when he is falling. Any solutions?
I have a question: is there a limit to the amount of Semi-Solid platforms? I have used a lot in one of my levels and some disappeared without me noticing.
What your experiencing is not a limit on how many you can place, but instead you are experiencing this because you can only put 5 overlaping each other. Trying to put one more on top of these 5, the 1st one placed will be removed.
You forgot to mention that in smb3 style, if Mario crouches on a white semisolid platform for a few seconds, he does a tiny hop. I’ve seen this used in troll levels
is the crouching easter egg with the white semi solid block in the super mario bros 3 gamestyle still a thing? if so, i would have really liked it to be mentioned here
actually, there's a wierd sequence that can allow you to overlap more than 5 semisolids. you have to do it in a zigzag, almost like an extended olympic ring symbols
Not my own level, but my favorite recent use of them is in this symplectic troll level to disguise a checkpoint room (with breakable blocks) ruclips.net/video/697OFbBjCXY/видео.html 7:58 and 15:00
its odd that the minimum height is 3 title or blocks for these platforms while in office Mario levels they are used at 2 titles in height ie Mario bros 1, in 2-3 and Mario lost level 2-3
Next update should at least add decor options to 3D world semi solids... At least, and then while they're at it, rethink letting doors overlap with them
Semi solids are pretty useless in decorations in 3d wolrld , they can't overlap with barely anything except enemies and have no variants soooo yeah In other styles , they are useful for decorations , but honestly I wish we have "materials " or something similar to lbp decorations .
I can't stand that semi solid platform can't be overlapped by an arrow. It won't let you make an interior in an outside level, and use the arrow where you want to for communication.

Unlike Semisolid Platforms and Mushroom Platforms, Bridges cannot overlap with Terrain (exc. Pipes), Coins, Icicles, Keys, Warp Doors, Checkpoint Flags, P Blocks, ON/OFF Switches, Dotted Line Blocks and themselves.
You missed that mario will jump on a semi solid white platform in Super Mario Bros gamestyle if he ducks a while on it. Also the bridge cannot overlap many things (they will be removed, when placing a bridge on it).
Well.. I barely used them for decorating, but since I watched this vid I realised how important they actually are for good designs.

Semi Solids are best for making things impassable while still allowing entry, because 1 way doors sound terrible when you bump into them
Unless it’s not on the top. Then 1-way-doors are obligated

They are also great for cosmetic touchups in levels. Especially in the original SMB theme.
