    Olivia knew what she was doing and starts to pretend she can't remember stuff so she won't be blamed

    Nah, you've got Olivia completely wrong. She has an extreme personality disorder, has for decades. She understood that she was putting a hit on Tony, in revenge for putting her in a home. Maybe she actually wanted him dead, maybe she just said it in the moment because she's a psycho, but either way she knew what she was setting him up for.

      Yeah, I don’t understand how there can be any question. It’s plain to see IMO. I think her new motherhood is affecting her opinion. A mother being that way to her son might seem inconceivable.

    • @Hexon66
      @Hexon66 6 дней назад +3

      It's easy a quarter century later, with the full story known, to express how clear Livia's motivation seems. But the scenario and the character are so intentionally abstract, and subversion of the notion of motherhood played upon, it's not surprising to be resistant at first to jump to the seemingly obvious conclusion. I mean, *THAT* is why the show is so well regarded, isn't? That there aren't entirely tropish, cookie cutter characters.

      My mom was a lot like Olivia, except more malicious. I kept a voicemail for years to play for people that didn't believe me, the voicemail was just six words - "You should have been an abortion". Thankfully dear ole mom choked on her last breath just about this time last year and now we're all free of her forever.

      "but either way she knew what she was setting him up for."
      To be clear Olivia told Junior three of his Capos have their mothers in the retirement home and they were meeting secretly, that undermines Juniors authority and is extremely disrespectful. That means Junior has to act to reaffirm his authority and respect, Olivia knows how all of this works and knew exactly what Junior would have to do.
      Edited to add Olivia also said "who knows, maybe they're talking about you". Just to rub salt into the wound.

    You keep underestimating Livia’s cold-blooded duplicity. Being a new mother, I’m sure it’s hard to comprehend how a mother could be like that to her child but that’s Livia.

  • @dakotaturpin8816
    @dakotaturpin8816 6 дней назад +12

    Livia knows exactly what she's doing. She's just very careful to never say anything directly, because of situations just like this one. If Tony finds out she's the reason Jr. tried to have him killed, she can manipulate him into believing it was just a case of confused old woman not knowing what she's not supposed to say and to whom. She might be the most devious one of them all.

    The fact that Tony was shot while carrying orange juice is a nod to The Godfather. Vito Corleone was buying oranges when he was shot. There were also oranges present in some way in most of the scenes where other people got murdered in the original and Part 2.

    Great reaction, Mary. The thing about Livia is that she speaks in a way so that she cannot be held responsible. But she was definately egging Junior on with that story comparing Tony to her lobotimized cousin. She was saying Tony was a shell of a man, so he might as well die.

    AJ asking for some whiskey in the limo is funny because the actor, Robert Iler, was a raging alcoholic and cocaine addict all the way through the Sopranos. It was a problem. He and the actress that plays his sister Meadow have been best friends since they started on the Sopranos. Little party boy had real life charisma and charmed an older girl even back then. He’s been sober for years so it’s okay to laugh about. He and Meadow have been podcasting together for years. Show is surprisingly good.

    Oh Marie, you sweet summer child....Livia knew *exactly* what she was doing and she definitely signed off on the hit on her son. You see her panicking just after and then feigning the dementia to throw off any suspicion. As she in present day (and Tony’s flashbacks show)…she’s a sociopath.
    You were asking if Uncle Junior thinks she’s faking to avoid any responsibility for the hit. Of course he’s thinking that. He knows it. We all do.

    Did she actually want Junior to kill him or was she just bitching? Its one of the things people argue about still. I’m with you, I think she was just bitching and jr interpreted it the way he wanted to hear it. I’ve seen it several times and if you go back, it definitely seems that way in the scene
