In the comic it establishes that she's actually responding to the infant directly asking her.

When I first saw the cast for the series, I was a little surprised at Death being played by a black actress, but then I realized that the Endless don't have ethnicities; what we see is a form that we can relate to and understand. Now that I've seen a few clips from the series, I see that the actress playing Death absolutely nails the character's personality perfectly, and I'm happy. Excellent casting choice!
Yeah, that's what the complainers are missing. They aren't really people and their appearances are just for our conveniences, so it doesn't really matter what ethnicity the actor is. The comic appearances were meant to symbolize the character, so as long as they do the same thing here, it doesn't have to be the same appearance as long as the character is preserved.
@@catwhowalksbyhimself Exactly! Doubly so because in the comic, Dream's appearance changes--sometimes WILDLY so--depending on who he's appearing to. In the side story Ramadan, set in the Middle East, he appears Middle Eastern. In one story set in Africa, he appears as a handsome African warrior. When he appears to the Martian Manhunter in a dream, he takes the form of the Martian god of dreams and sleep, and in the story The Dream of A Thousand Cats, he appears to the story's narrator, a housecat, as a panther-sized black cat with glowing green eyes. It's even more explicit with Desire, who appears as whichever gender(s) you're most attracted to--so if you're a straight woman or a gay guy, Desire appears as a smoking hot hunk, while a lesbian or straight guy would see them as a supermodel-gorgeous woman. To a bisexual or pansexual, I assume Desire would appear as a non-binary person embodying all the traits of both masculinity and femininity that the person in question is most drawn to. (And to someone like me with my weird futa fetish, Desire would probably appear as a sexy futa babe with just the right size bulge in her panties.) From what I've seen so far in the different RUclips clips I've seen, the casting director went for as much of the essence of the comic character's appearance as possible, but still finding actors who can portray the character as depicted in the comic. Death, for example, has the "cool big sis" energy that she has in the comic, a kind of "hey, I know the _idea_ of death and dying can be scary, but that doesn't mean I have to appear as something frightening when I can look like someone you'd feel comfortable hanging out in a park with for a day." Mason Park has the wonderful androgyny that Desire had in the comics, Donna Preston looks like a real-life version of Despair, and Gwen Christie looks like Lucifer, and from what little I've seen, they all do great jobs playing their respective roles.

What I love about the portrayal of Death in Sandman, is that it doesn't shy away from the nitty gritty. We are in one big queue for the end but we don't know where we are in that queue. I have always liked to think of death as a friend rather than a force that rips people away. I have found that has helped me deal with my own grief and my own fears of death. I have gotten round to reading the first graphic novel and the casting is absolutely perfect! Mr Gaiman and his team have exceeded themselves. Such a beautiful episode ❤
I must say Kirby did a good job portraying Death, I feel she gave the character justice. I love how the character of Death from the comics was initially as sullen and moody as Dream is here and one day she decided to take a “vacation” of sorts and become human fated to die one day. After experiencing living and what it is like to actually die she then embraced the job she hated and decided to become nicer, to become the friend one needs at the end of your life and for your journey to the next one. What I especially like about this is that she continues to have these “vacations” so that she never loses that perspective.
The main reason she has them is because one time she was shepherding a little girl who didn't want to die and didn't understand why, just like Dream didn't. When Death asked her why she was making a big deal out of it, the response was "well, how you would like it?" and that bugged her because she genuinely never had the experience.
This was always my favorite scene in the comics. It brought me to tears. To see it brought so beautifully to life brings me there again. I only wish Death might always come with such kindness.

Most likely SID (sudden infant death). It occours more often than people might think, but til today noone knows exactly why it happens. There are theories but nothing proven.
Death of the Endless has always been my favorite character in that AU, and my favorite psychopomp. I think it could be a whole lot worse than to end your life and be welcomed to the other side with a cheery goth Death.
Had this same talk with my own sister. She keeps me on an even keel, because left to my own devices she knows I’ll go off the deep end and hurt people. She’s the Yin to my Yang, she shines the light when I’m in darkness. God have mercy on anyone that takes that light away and plunges me into darkness.
Best sibling ever - I would love to see a pissed death ready to go all hulk on Desire and their scheming partner. Dream please appreciate your siblings.
I kinda wanna know the significance of the endless' relationships with each other, why is Desire determined to bring down Dream?, why is dream closer to Death more than anyone? why is Desire and Despair considered twins? Like I know it would probably be answered in the next seasons and whatnot, but still, curiousity.
Death, Dream and Destiny represent order and balance in human life. Desire, despair and delirium represent turbulence and chaos. Think of them as the unstable/unpredictable elements. Destruction is removed from the whole equation because his existence is redundant. He doesn't serve any purpose.
Morpheus and Thanatos are brother in greek mythologie ' they Always portrayed Dreams with death. Idk if in your country this quote existe. But in french we call death the eternal peace ( le repos éternel) For désire and despair. One lead to another. Desire Can become despair. Despair Can become désire
Desire and Dream were once close friends, but then Desire decided to be a jerk and mess with Dream and matters got worse from there. As for Death and Dream, probably because they are the oldest after Destiny. Despair was made from Desire after the first Despair was killed (we don’t know the details but apparently it was justified).
After seeing this portrayal of Death, I realized how stupid and closed minded I was when it came to casting, I don't care that she's not a skinny pale little goth, this actress played Death PERFECTLY I love her interpretation, and when the time comes for me to go to the other side tomorrow, no matter what, it would be great if they welcome me with a friendly face like this lady's.
I admit that I was a little worried, but I was more worried about anyone playing Death. How can you find someone like this? Everybody fears death cause they don't know what's on the other side even with what religion tells us, but still. Or they fear damnation, or their atheist and think there's nothing just like before u were born. Death herself here shows when u a good person, there's really nothing to fear. I'll bet the real angel of death is just like that cause after all, she or he, is an angel.
as an atheist, i would say death is just like how "you" feel before you were born, so its literally nothing, you hv no consciousness and everything just lights off and thats it
I love that first scene when she takes the old man, but upon rewatching, I get more of a sense of just how exquisitely subtle Kirby Howell-Baptiste's performance really is. She makes each of her "takings" so immensely personal & non-judgemental. I hope we get to see more of her in the upcoming season/s!
I haven't seen this show/movie yet but this video really reminds me about "Paradise Lost" and the part of it where Michael (i think) says that death isnt anything to be afraid of, it is technically a blessing because it means we can finally be reunited with God.
She also likes hot dogs. Or at least tries one and likes it, during the one day allowed to her to be mortal. Which implies..mortal senses are part and parcel of our mortality and should be cherished as the gift they are.

Most likely SID (sudden infant death). It occours more often than people might think, but til today noone knows exactly why it happens. There are theories but nothing proven.
Death being the wake up slap Dream needs. As bad as Desire, what a roast.
Great actress, she makes death seem so wholesome. That smile melts iron.
I agree. She did a great job delivering the warmth, sisterly, sympathetic layers of Death.
This is without a doubt my favourite episode.
Honestly she gives off doctor energy
The only doctor you can trust
@@wolfranga8477 and always there to treat you untill you're healthy. Even when you die of old age
She is just YUMMY ❤.
She nailed this role!
Death of the Endless has always been my favorite character in that AU, and my favorite psychopomp. I think it could be a whole lot worse than to end your life and be welcomed to the other side with a cheery goth Death.
All of Death scenes had me fucked up emotionally. 🥺
Try meditation
THEY ARE SO SWEET I LOVE THEM SO MUCH-
She's stunning. ❤
Best sibling ever - I would love to see a pissed death ready to go all hulk on Desire and their scheming partner. Dream please appreciate your siblings.
Uno de los mejores capitulos de la serie...Muerte, es tambien uno de los mejores personajes creados por Neil...
The best episode.
God I almost cried during Death scenes, the bittersweet embrace is just too much to bare 😞😢
We he goes up to the crib looking at the small body 💔
This show was the definition of "go woke, get the CROWN" 🔥
But in french we call death the eternal peace ( le repos éternel)
For désire and despair. One lead to another. Desire Can become despair. Despair Can become désire
Desire brings hope and Despair destroys it. The balance between them is given as them being twins.
My dreams are driven by my desires. The desire is the cause and the dream is the effect.
But then I watched these scenes and felt like I was really seeing her, like, Oh, there she is! She's perfect. You feel like you have always known her and have been waiting for her
Cope
This is so sadly beautiful. Magical.
The music in this episode was absolutely amazing 🎶🔥
God this series was good
You got what everybody gets, you got a lifetime
My favorite line! I'm a little sad it wasn't in the show
@@mattialetiziamarino681 iirc this line is from Brief Lives, so it might still be coming. I am sad that the poem that Dream recites about Death was cut. I liked it a lot and it also says much about the sibling relationship, the way Dream remembers and appreciates it
She nailed it so much, can't wait for a season 2
Everybody fears death cause they don't know what's on the other side even with what religion tells us, but still. Or they fear damnation, or their atheist and think there's nothing just like before u were born. Death herself here shows when u a good person, there's really nothing to fear. I'll bet the real angel of death is just like that cause after all, she or he, is an angel.
I personally think death is a she woman give life so it would make sense that death would take the form of a woman
@@mansamusa8410 it's probably a it. Death doesn't have a gender.
as an atheist, i would say death is just like how "you" feel before you were born, so its literally nothing, you hv no consciousness and everything just lights off and thats it
Death kinda be nice to people and dream is watching her how she help people❤❤❤ respect for death and dream
This is one of the best sibling dynamics I’ve ever seen
I love that first scene when she takes the old man, but upon rewatching, I get more of a sense of just how exquisitely subtle Kirby Howell-Baptiste's performance really is. She makes each of her "takings" so immensely personal & non-judgemental. I hope we get to see more of her in the upcoming season/s!
This sequence was great.
"I look so old, so empty", I feel that.
I haven't seen this show/movie yet but this video really reminds me about "Paradise Lost" and the part of it where Michael (i think) says that death isnt anything to be afraid of, it is technically a blessing because it means we can finally be reunited with God.
It's amazing Yet scary how all of us are luving our way to that single day.
When she took the baby it broke me.
Death of the Endless is one of my favorite personification of death in both comic and series.
"Death came with friendly care."
This interpretation of death is very nice and interesting.
Oh my goodness! If the death is THIS woman...may I dont fear the death anymore ❤😉
Chorei litros com esse episódio 😭
I can't stop crying.
Damn I love her. She's amazing.
Powerful
I like the connection between the two. But honestly? I cried my heart out, when she came for the Baby - as I was a fresh Mommy at the time...
If at the moments of our end, she would come to greet us, we would never fear death
Death is obsessed with apples. Of course!
She also likes hot dogs. Or at least tries one and likes it, during the one day allowed to her to be mortal. Which implies..mortal senses are part and parcel of our mortality and should be cherished as the gift they are.
I like how even Dream doesn’t look when she takes souls to the Sunless Lands. Her winged form is only for the dead to see.
Im crushing so hard on death! goddammit! I really hope she is the one that picks me up when its all over😭💘
Que hermoso capítulo
This and episode 5 are the best.
You know what I like about this version of Death? That the showrunners never gave us her true (winged) form. That is for the dead to see, not us.
@@refulgent_fanta yeah and dream also abstained himself from seeing it too
@@ahmad0900 huh! You’re right, I didn’t notice that before. Dreams always turns around when she flies the souls to the Sunless Lands.
Can you imagine, you finally die. Death comes for you, smiling down with nothing but warmth and love. You glance over her shoulder, and see her emo younger brother just standing there like 🧍
She’s like the Discworld death, there’s no meanness, no cruelty, it’s just the ending
I like to imagine it was her that showed up for my friends, I know it’s false, but it’s a nice thought
Dream's quest would have ended in one episode if he called for big sister Death.
She did amazing playing Death
You get what everyone gets. You get a lifetime.
I love a gentle version of death
Death is a friend
Ive commented before, but I shall be glad when i go to the sunless lands ine day, and to know I shall be greeted by our old friend Death.
If i have a kind face and a good heart like hers, I shall be happy to cross over with joy to see what else the wonders of existence has to offer me. ❤
Death is a friend who comes to all, in the end. We cannot run from it. We can only accept it.
Hope Harry got to finish the Shema!
Neil, I don't know why they took the sound of flapping wings away, I am proud they kept the actress tho.
My parents and I were watching this episode a couple of days ago and when they were wondering who she was, I told them she was Death... then added I meant it literally.
Our purpose is our function
I like to think that the people that death helped while with dream all thought that dream was the actual death and she was just someone assisting him to take souls🤣🤣
they actually do that in one episode i think. it was pretty funny
or rather. dream goes to meet someone and they assume he is death
Morpheus’s antisocialness mixed with Death’s joyfulness is one to behold
when Death picked the baby up, my heart sank……. i know it’s already written by God u die on certain day/date/time etc…..
Alguien me hablo todos los dias de mi vida
Susurrandome al oido "vive, vive, vive"
Era la muerte
I like that they didn’t have the mother screaming when she realized her baby had passed. We all knew what was next; it would have been gratuitous and disrupted the melancholy yet hopeful mood the show had cultivated to actually show it.
Can you post desire and despair scheming
My friend of 11 years died monday this week i lqst say him thuraday a week ago he stayed at my place for 4 days even cleaned told him not to played my ps5 i cant even touch nothing now in my place just sad i hope death was kind to him
_"That's it? That's all I get?"_
May she meet me at the end of my life.
Anita Darling!
I would have loved him to throw the bread at his head like in the comics, there Dream looks really scared for his older sister, but that's the way it is in real life, sometimes it takes a good scolding to get you on the right track.
