  • Joined by my mate Tommy, we decided to head out onto the desolate Dengie Peninsula on the Essex coast towards Bradwell-On-Sea, to wild camp for the night on the beach near to the isolated chapel of St. Peter-On-The-Wall.
    Rain was 80% likely and it did from about 2 am until 8 am. The wind wasn't too bad despite being on the coast.
    We used bivvy bags and slept under my Lomo 3m x 3m tarp set up like a tent, it was Tommy's first time using a bivvy bag and he loved it!

    Great videos. I know this area quite well having visited it since the mid sixties.
    To add interest, the observation box on stilts at the edge of the marsh was put there in the early fifties ? to observe aircraft firing at the targets which were laid out on the mud flats via a small railway. There used to be an old yellow metal cone marker out on the marsh then, also the area was littered with 20mm bullets.
    There used to be part of a jet aircraft fuselage by the sea wall now gone.
    I was told this by a man I met there who lived around there as a boy, there are still bits out there visible at very low tides.
    Also the ghostly roman who gallops down the straight road to the site of the fort, perhaps he is a friend of the one who walks the causway to Mersea Island.
    There was a small old cottage tucked under the sea wall which was the home to the last of the old wild fowlers named Walter Linnet who predicted the flood of 1953 and walked to the village to phone the Met office, they ignored him!
    More vids please.

    I loved it walking around this area especially. It's a rare place, not much there, but it's really peaceful when no one is around. I visited this place after watching a Beckie0 video. been there three time to date.

    Great stuff lads, brings back memories of the 11 years I lived and worked there as a poultry farm manager on the disused airfield. Great times, especially in the Green man !!

      @TOM_OUTDOORS  6 лет назад

      I'm planning to explore the remains of the airfield and a few pillboxes and bunkers in that area. I love the Dengie peninsula, a very desolate and barren place. You forget you're in Essex there. Is the green Man the pub opposite the church or the one at Bradwell waterside?

    • @carlmason8500
      @carlmason8500 6 лет назад

      Yeah the airfield was a WW2 site, Mosquito aircraft mainly flew from there. The farm I worked on is situated on one of the runways, the Green Man is in the area of waterside just up a bit from the marina, I miss the place, left there in about 2014 I think !..

      Carl Mason the green Man is a lovely pub. Best in the area. I'll definitely look into the airfield etc mate, cheers for the information. I'm gonna do more walking and wild camping for a bit though and resume the urbex later in the year.

    You sir have a new sub... I have done a decent amount of wild camping, mainly cycling abroad and whilst I have no issues doing it the UK the official attitude to rights of access is pathetic to be honest. I have just returned from Scotland where I was staying in a Camper/Day van and the open access rights they enjoy is a breath of fresh air and more importantly areas up there are booming with trade such as local pubs and shops, I would love to be able to motorcycle wild camp in the UK but obviously apart from Dartmoor and a few scattered places it is a no no "technically".. I would have to ask why does the forestry commission not open up "their" land to wild camping?, even if they have a national annual membership fee to do so?. A vast majority of campers will leave no trace and the idiots who cause the issues will do so regardless as that is their mentality. They would not even have to open up all the land just a few acres at certain sites across the UK and that would in turn create jobs for rangers, it would help educate people esp the youngsters who are shown the ropes by parents and it will give them a excuse to get outside, that intern makes massive improvements to our countries mental health epidemic. Of course that would be to easy!!!!!... Not been down to Bradwell before and living on the Essex border it may be worth a look, Regards

      Thanks for subscribing mate. Enjoy the channel. I don't worry about it, I just get on with it regardless. At the worst I may face a fine or a criminal warning. But that's only if you damage private property etc. Civil trespass is hardly an offence they just ask you to leave. IF YOU GET CAUGHT.

    Tom, do you think I would have any trouble pegging out my Vango Blade 100 on that spot? I've never tried pitching on sand but wondered if the dune area you were in was mixed up with soil so was easier? Thanks.

    Hi Tom. I'm looking to head out this way soon for a wild camp. Was your spot basically left at the church, past the Othona Community for a bit then camp on the beach?

      Ben H pretty much mate. I'd love to join you for it if the offer is there. Unless you want to do a solo camp or with others. It's a great area.

      TOM OUTDOORS Hi Tom. Thanks for that. As this will officially be my first solo wild camp, I think I will be brave and head out alone on this one! Cheers though. Perhaps a hook-up when I return there though? I’ve scouted out another spot actually that’s about a mile from your camp ;-)
