I live in Victoria, Australia and do a lot of deer hunting in our alpine region. One year, I was hunting from a site where I'd pitched my 4x4 with its rooftop tent. I returned mid afternoon after a morning hunt that took me about 3km from my camp site, and found a group of guys had pitched on the same spot as me. They were the full bogan types too, sinking beers and blasting music obnoxiously at like 2:00pm. They weren't too close or anything like that. In fact they were a good distance from my site. However, when I got to my 4x4, I immediately noticed boot prints that weren't mine around it, and that half a bag of firewood plus my good steel framed axe had disappeared. Guess where the prints led... I sauntered over to them with my 308 rifle forward slung, stepped into their view and loudly said to them, "I understand you may have borrowed some of my kit, it's now time to return it". After shitting their pants, they sheepishly returned my axe and now a quarter of a bag of firewood. With weak excuses about forgetting their own axe etc. I went and packed up, then left. I wasn't going to chance any more issues. How's the cheek though, to flog my stuff thinking their numbers would dissuade me from confronting them.
They're like the weirdo who gets on the bus and sits next to you even though the whole rest of the bus is empty. I don't know what is wrong with some people, you sort of think people who enjoy camping like you have similar interests would have the same values and sensitivities but no!
Had a similar thing happen to me 2 years ago… I waited until the middle of the night and went down to take a massive shite right outside the entrance to their tent 👍
Nobody taught them manners. We live in a culture which forbids any confrontation, forces to "tolerate" everything. Nobody ever confronted them, so how would they even know. Also, they just went for this exact spot, just a few meters from the road and car park, it seems it was "their local" spot, where they "always" fish&drink, and didn't have any idea how it would be in another one... The paradox is, they also might've been "uncomfortable" that someone took "their only good" spot...
Albeit I agree that people need to work on their manners, I don't think people in the olden days would be particularly different, it would be same shit by a different asshole
I had the same thing happen to me, I was on a canoeing/fishing 3 day camping trip up a small creek in the middle of nowhere, just me and my french bulldog, I thought no one would ever be there as it was quite a paddle to get to and quite out of the way up a small side Creek. During my trip to get there, I passed a boat with 8 adults and 6 kids having a rather loud party, they also had a couple of jet ski's and a rubber dinghy. As i continued my trip I noticed that I was being followed by them, but i didn't give it much care as I knew where I was going was going to be hard for them to get to in their large boat. I soon lost them around the shallow water bend in the creek entrance. I got to my camp site and started setting up when I heard the jet ski's/ dinghy in the next creek along, which I presume they thought was the one i went down. I could hear them yelling "where did he go? Which I have to admit had me a little worried, but I continued to unpack my gear and set up camp. I made lunch then decided to go further down the creek to fish, about a 20 minute paddle, the whole time still hearing the sounds of outboard motors. After about 30 minutes, I heard a jetski getting closer and thought this is getting really strange, then I see this guy on the jet ski see me then turned around straight away and take off, I had a bad feeling so started to paddle back to my campsite, as I get within sight of my camp I notice the jet ski's and dinghy on the shore, 5 tents had been set up there, a fire pit bbq going (which was my fire pit) and music blaring through speakers. As I reached the bank they all just stared at me like I was an unwanted trespasser although the look on my face probably wasn't one of happiness at this point. As I made my way up the embankment I noticed that my tent had been un-pegged and dragged to the edge off the camp-site, my fishing gear I left had been gone through with some missing and my esky had been gone through and my 3 tomahawk steaks, bacon, sausages, eggs, bread rolls and my 2 bottles of rum were gone, needless to say, I was not happy and started to make my way over to the group to confront them, as I approached I notice one of the older guys pick up a axe quite menacingly, by now their kids have also hopped into my canoe and started going through my stuff in there. I could see my steaks/sausages cooking away on my fire pit grill along with their terrible sizzle steaks and cheap sausages, my half drunk rum bottles on their table with buttered bread rolls/salads ect among their food and drinks. I said to the group as I approached why did they move my tent and steal my fishing gear/fire pit and food, to which one of the guys said they had to move my tent as it could have caught on fire from the BBQ pit, but denied going through or taking my stuff, to which I replied that it seems amazing that everything I'm missing you seem to have, to which the guy holding the axe told me I'd better leave as I'm making the women with them feel unsafe and he might have to do something about it, I decided it wasn't worth my life arguing with these low life thieves, so I decided to cut my losses and retreat to safety and some place that I could get phone reception to call the police. As I was trying to pack my belongings into the canoe while getting drunken abuse hurled at me, I kept having to tell the kids to get out of my canoe, to which the parents told me I have no right to tell them what to do. When I was packed two kids were refusing to get out so I pushed off with them in still in it, the adults started screaming and running for the jet ski's, but the kids quickly jumped out in waist deep water and walked to shore as I was pelted with abuse and rocks. Also one of the women in the group really liked my dog and kept calling her over, telling her she was a good dog and saying how I was cruel to take her camping and she was going to keep her and give her a better home, unfortunately for her she couldn't hang on to her as she struggled to get back to me. The police said they went out there but couldn't find them or my stuff, but I doubt they did as I returned about 6 months later and found my fire pit still in the same place and my 2 broken fishing rods there minus the reels my empty rum bottles and all their garbage they just dumped. I now take mace whenever I go camping alone.
@abl1699 This isn't the only time I've had a bad camping experience caused by people who were over intoxicated but was definitely my worst. I've had a lot of good times camping with no problems at all and have generally felt safe.
This happened to me and my husband. We had a fire on the beach, having lunch and 6 cars show up RIGHT NEXT TO US, like, 1 car width away and out pops 22 people! They were city folks and they were so loud. They had the entire coastline to choose from. They’re were barely any people on the beach that day. We packed up and left but I was effing livid!

I've had a similar experience in Ontario, Canada. My group had set up camp close by the water of the campsite, so our shelters were not easily visible upon entering the campsite, however we made sure to leave our water filtration, chairs, and other things in the main camp area so people knew we were there. A family comes and "claims" the site. I tell them we are literally camped down by the water which they could easily have seen where we were at. They refused to leave the site as we weren't camped in an obvious spot. It doesn't matter where we were, we were part of that campsite. I told them they can pitch their tents on our site if they want but they'll have to shit in the same hole as us, eat at the same table as us, share the same food locker, and walk through the same areas as us if they were to stay. They left afterwards after realizing their entitlement would inconvenience them and ruin their trip. I've also had experiences where I've gladly helped fellow Hikers set up camp at our site if it was raining and sun was setting and they've asked respectfully.
I once returned to my tent to find someone had erected theirs right next to mine, they even put their guy ropes inside my outer skin. Luckily I snore pretty loudly and they left early the next day 😂
In life choose your battles, better to turn the cheek an move on and live for another day, no need to fight they were wrong and all know it, you came out the man and winner.

I mean, you could wait for the night and do all sorts of things that would probably make them never want to camp ever again, but realistically, it is easier to just fvck off and enjoy a different campsite. I think the dude made the right choice.
That's the problem with this world, everyone trying to make everyone else a good little boy, but no one really knows what that means. We've lost a lot of our humanity to complacency and domestication. We are actually made weaker, dumber, and less independently viable because of it. Even the average human brain size has dramatically shrunk over the past 3 thousand years or so. Basically, we're turning ourselves into ants who like to play as being adventurers instead of having the competence to actually live our lives.

I can understand a couple of hikers pitching up next to you after struggling to find a pitch and being knackered, but a whole group like that is just taking the piss! People like that spoil it for all of us!

Exactly same thing happened to me last week in a camping ground in Germany. I was the only one on the green, went out, came back and 2 large tents were build right before my nose. Family gathering. Before my tent there was a table with banks and people were sittingthere having dinner and a childrens riding hors. The whole place was empty, they did this purposefully. I took my tent and moved away and one of the guys said, I did not want to disturb you. (Yeah)...
That´s when you stumble with a fire source and burn their tenst down, with the words i did not wanted that your tents burn down.... . I assume you are German than you Know: Der Klügere gibt nach ( the samrter one gives in ), which i follow up with : Wenn die klugen immer nachgeben, wird die welt bald nur noch von Idioten regiert. ( if the smart always give up the world will be ruled by idiots ). But that´s just me, i try to bother nobody, but be aware if you bother me it will end badly, i have a short short ignition cord, and act first think later.

You can't say they didn't intimidate you when you literally dragged your tent away. Can't say for sure what the motivation was setting up right next to you . But the dude said he camps in that spot all the time , he probably felt like you encroached on "his" spot.

I woke up early one morning to find a tent set up behind mine and a little kid trying to light a fire in-between our tents while his mum watched. So incredibly inconsiderate some people are.
Back in the 1980s my son and I would do a back country canoe trips. One year there was a group of teenage girls with adult counselors leading them. They camped right next to my son and I because I had a firearm and there were bear around. The next day we left down a river and they caught up with us at lunch because we were taking our time fishing. We passed them later in the day and I figured out they wanted to camp next to us again. In the evening we pulled off and I figured I’d fake them out. We set up just our rainfly and had supper when they pulled in and set up camp. We packed our rainfly and headed back down the river a few miles. They were freaking out, but at least we had peace and quiet that night.
Some people have zero social awareness 🙄. The gaul of them to stalk you (like is bear) is nuts. Though, you must have given them some impression to follow considering the pew-pew/bear discussion.

Because people are too polite. I'm reading these comments and just keep thinking, if this happened to me... I'm SO much more evil than all of you. Come set up RIGHT ON TOP OF ME? Touch my shit? Oh, that will be retaliated tenfold. They like to drink and party? Neat, I'm partying with them then. Except I'll be on that sneaky water while shoving my vodka shots on them. Around 3am or whenever they start to crash out = I would begin to set up a bit of a prank. Kind that leaves you not camping anymore, just drunk in the woods with half your shit gone or ruined, suddenly and with much commotion. There might be carefully considered rearrangements of sharp sticks that can't be seen in the dark. Combined with missing light sources. All that cordage yet have you ever actually tripwired anything? Things that could walk off quietly while drunks slept might have been on fire for a full hour before I kick things off. If I know where they parked this is going to get expensive. Boats = the same idea except I have always wanted to fully sink one. And I will be gone by the time anyone is aware of what I've done quietly and quickly in the dead of the night. But a message will be sent.
I gave up camping at that spot years ago. Arseholes like that have left a dump of plastic, beer bottles, shitty toilet paper, and even used tampons, etc. Google Earth further south and explore through dense vegetation, there's some superb one-person pitches right on the water. Eeek, intelligence is rare. They likely meant no harm. Folks come up and fish right next to me when there are miles of open shore. I just ask them politely why they chose to fish right where I am. I then 16:27 politely tell them that I have myo interest in their company and that they may take this spot but not to even think about taking my next. You'd need a time machine and a condom for the parents of those types to fix the problem.

I had the exact opposite problem. Went camping about 1hour from very small town. (Very small, one pub, one servo and no houses) with 3 other adults. That night we were hassled by station kids partying in their utes and trucks for a couple of hours out at the national park.
As kids and young adults, mind you we live in bc canada 🇨🇦 camping capital, we'd travel on old logging road to remote places and rarely had problems. This was pre 1990s. Now all those remote places are covered with camp grounds that will cost you over 20$ a night. It's wise to reserve, and they are still beautiful places to go. Since then I moved to acreage to camp every day😅😅😅😅.

You gotta remember alot of city people go to paid camping sites often where everything is packed. City people are usually never alone for long and they see another tent as a friendly SPACIOUS camp site since there's ONLY one tent. Really different mentality and I'm sure explaining etiquette to people in a mature way while you're pissed off isn't the easiest to do

Same thing happened to me in the Cairngornns over one New Year. Already pitched in the snow sheltered behind a bank with my wife. Two winter walkers rocked up and pitched 8 metres away. In a 6 square kilometre valley. I asked if they were pitching there and the reply was "good a place as any". Went hoping for solitude and ended up listening to their route planning conversation all evening.
I live in Nevada close to the California border on the eastern flank of the Sierras. I do quite a bit of solo camping as I live on my own. I don’t often run into these types of situations and I think it’s because I live in America and I take guns with me when I go camping and it’s safe to assume everybody else does too, so it really creates a nice and polite environment so everyone gets along.

Totally understand your frustration. We all struggle with this and it's getting worse with my RUclips feed full of people comming to Scotland as some kind of mecca for wild camping. G'day, from NZ, our forests are vast, and we don't have these problems (except in the high tourist areas), but having said that, one time I was in a very remote area and was surprised to find that when I awoke in the morning, there was a tent pitched about 5 metres from me. there was plenty of places to pitch (it was by a river) but they decided that my place was the better one. I was out for 4 days, and this person was the only person I was to see. It does spoil the remote feeling, but this is very rare. Anyway, that's my little story on that subject. The person might of felt lonely or scared alone at night. People need to be less hard hearted and caring for others but if the holy spirit gives concernment and you see this person to be aggressive , drunkard or too quite then by all means just get away for your own protection and peace of mind... Many years ago myself, my wife pitched a tent on a 10 acre field in Norfolk. We were the only tent In that field, we went out for a few hours and when we came back another tent had appeared 10 feet away from ours. We just laughed, packed up our tent and moved

Most people who camp, especially in places where a permit is needed, are decent, respectful and responsible people but there are always exceptions. Clearly it was a local pitch for local people.... Kudos to you for keeping your cool and being the adult in the room

As a Brit Down Under that’s par for the course with Ozzie’s where ever you pitch a tent, sit in public somewhere or even park the car where there will be loads of space elsewhere but they seem to want to setup or park right on top of you! You did the right thing to move plenty of morons about!!
I'm also Aussie and mate it does get pretty bad down here like that. People have a weird craving for socialization towards other people, and whilst sometimes it can just be meant as trying to be friendly, often it's for no reason other than perhaps a strange herd mentality. With no consideration that maybe we don't all want to start a flock!
lol, yes. I’ve been there. There is an ENTIRE wilderness, yet you are next to me? Once in Yosemite, a camper put his tent literally a foot from mine, I left the next day. Not just because of that, but the people across from me strung high powered LED lights all over so it looked like I was in the city. Do t get me started on the music. 😮
there was someone having a similar problem and they bought some very strong fart spray online.and it was extremely noxious. The next time they had neighbors that were too close they sprayed it outside around their camper van. The people left right away.
Good call moving. A night next to the trackie bottom brigade would be horrible. Out of order what they did. I done a bike packing trip last week well away from there had a 81mile ride home after climbing over rest and be thankful I emerged at Lomond looking for easy relaxing mostly flat ride home after that. Nothing but mess and a holes unloading camping gear right out their cars/campers. It's a no go zone for any true campers now.

Bout 30yrs ago me my wife and our two young boys were tent camping in the Mt. Hood, Orygun Forest. Soon a bunch of younger ppl pretty much took over the small camping area complete with a large sign by the road. They did their best to make us leave, saying they have this big party every year and they would be too loud for us. I said the noise wouldn't bother us, so he gave up. A state cop showed up told them what they were doing was illegal (too many ppl in one spot) and kicked them all out !! We had a nice chat with the Officer, peacfully sitting by our camp 🔥 fire ... I would've done the same as you in that scenario.

Looks like you should find a more secluded site. I bought a boat to go up rivers and it’s been awesome . More are getting that idea too now so I gotta go further away by jet boat now
I'm mixed on this. Why those people might have been assholes and their might be plenty other spots, I don't think anyone is entitled to have a spot just for himself. Nature is a public place, and I think it is a good practice to not privatise it, even temporarily. If one want to be alone, just don't pitch on the best spot in the area.
A real pain. I'm sorry to hear that.I would have felt exactly the same as you. Spoils the experience many of us hope for. If people want a fenced in campsite with toilets etc then they are available. but these guys wouldn't have gotten away with a rowdy night due to people pressure and they would have been outnumbered. Rain doesn't help it has to be said. Or midges...

Man, that sucked, i had people try to pitch or pitch their tents way too close to mine a few times as well. A lot of people don't respect others privacy and space.
Have stayed in that hotel its beautiful. We didn't go on coach holiday we went self drive. It's lovely. My husband is Scottish and we love going to the lochs so beautiful. Have noticed since van life has become so popular there is a lot of mess left behind. Not nice to see Shouldn't spoil beautiful places for own selfishness
You've never camped in any of the trailer courts they call campgrounds in the eastern US. Last month (Oct.), I decided that 60 years of camping is enough. I'm through. It's not that this old grey mare ain't what she used to be, it's camping that ain't what it used to be. "Do you have a reservation" "No." "There's just one site I can give you." I was in a van and my assigned parking space was in a double to be shared with my neighbor with her rooftop tent. I never slept that close to the sister I shared a bedroom with! Then it occurred to me that the population density there was at least as concentrated as an apartment building. Concentration camps. What I'm quitting isn't really camping anyway.
I mostly do dispersed camping (TVA or USFS) now as I'm on a motorcycle in the lower Appalachians and a small tent or tarp. No reservations, just 1st come and typically no fee (no water or bathrooms). Last summer I decided to go back to a large 25 space campground. USFS has stopped taking envelope money ($10/night) and wants me to pay by app in an area with no cell service. It was noisy, crowded, banging RV doors all evening, bright lights, generators, TVs, kids running wild, banging trash can lids (nobody seems to be able to close a lid slowly). I may use such a site again in the off season but if they are too damned lazy to pick up money, they are obviously too damned lazy to clean the sites....just outsourced garbage pickup and broken well heads.
@@STho205 My final experience WAS in the off season (Oct.). I optimistically expected the place to be half empty. And it was. So they closed 1/2 and kept the other 1/2 just as crowded as in the peak season. So I went to another state park 1/2 hour away. Same thing, but about 3/4 : 1/4, by reservation only. So I went back to the first place. The office had closed by this time. So I stayed in an empty reserved space. No fee (Ha, Ha), and in the AM, I just drove the 4 hrs. home. My own home has much more of what I want in a vacation than any of these noisy concentration camps.
@@dinahnicest6525 they just don't want to clean them anymore and camp hosts are finding the job isn't worth it to them anymore....so the parks limit usage keeping folks close. Dispersed camping is best as you expect little but a plot of ground...come prepared to be self sufficient and don't overly imagine getting attacked on your own...it is a better time. Many campgrounds went to sh-+ in 2020 when they closed and never restaffed
@@STho205 I started camping in 1965. For the next decade, anyone could easily find enough firewood to last most of a weekend trip within 1/2 hr. of arrival. In an off season, no one ever camped within sight. It was often an ear strain just to hear their axes. My kids never took to camping the way I did. I couldn't understand it until I realized that they never experienced what I did; and what I have been loving about it was all in my imagination and the memory of a distant past that no longer exists.

Thats too bad. I feel sorry for you. I would have mentioned something along the lines of ''You should have asked me first. I had a very loose stomach last night and thats right were I squatted to do my buisness'' Cant you smell it?'' Explain that you cant get far from your tent before you need to squat. Explain you have a 'condition' and thats why none of your friends will camp with you so your always camping alone. You could get really creative if you have a chocolate bar. Melt some and smear it on your hands or face.... Make sure to try and shake their hands afterward. Keep asking them if they have any extra toilet paper. Explain to them, in detail, of your horrendous bowl movements and how it got ''everywhere'' Keep asking them '' Are you sure you want to sleep right there in that mess?''
This is also familiar in Finland. Guys who always leave behind a lot of empty beer cans, cigarette butts, garbage, trees condemned to death near the campfire that have been cut down with birch bark or pine bark for kindling. I had a lovely little space years back, all out the way but the oiks needed a place to do pallet fires and questionable things with paraffffenalia so sadly I had to do the same, bear in mind I usually was out with a rucksack of photo op "cutlery" so a case of walk away and deal with it, barely got out since...
Camping use to be good back in days . And then we had more campers and litters , the place became a mess . And then they decided to control and make money out of the lot , creating those camp sides full of idiots , and you had to pay . Best advice next time , don’t pay , walk a little further of the bam and enjoy your evening . Scotland outdoor is fantastic a little bit further is awesome . Go further , free , no rubbish , no idiots .
We were at loch lomond as well. There are camp sites which allows to camp officially. But you have to pay for it first for like 4 weeks earlier. So the areas are relatively small and after walking 25 km and paid for that area. I understand that guys.
Sorry that happened to you dude; there are good spots further south outside the permit zone at Dail, All't a Guanan outflow and Mark bothy. You used to be able to see if any other permits had been sold when you were booking a spot, I used to use it to help me decide where to go. Hope it rained on the neds and they caught nothing.
That looks like a beautiful place What a drag having to set up a second time in the rain. Those nimrods seem like the type who would be noisy all night and be peeing in the stream above where you get your water.
That is the attitude of today, they did the wrong thing and you did the right thing, and I guarantee if you had a mate or two along with you they wouldn.t have acted like that, loch lomond is a magnet for these types.
I've only had this happen once. I took my holster and switched it to open carry and then told them "you're gonna leave, one way or the other, in the next 30 minutes."
It all depends on the situation...You arrive late, there's no place... You find a spot and ask nicely if they mind that you pitch your tent and don't make noise and go to bed.... that's fine by me. But a group like this with this situation.... kinda rude
It is inconceivable how cras, selfish, ignorant and down right arrogant some folk are! They clearly have no clue at all about the sanctity of outdoor life and how important it is to let people just be and get on with their own thing. I used to live in Kent and do a lot of open canoeing. One of my regular trips was just a day out along a short stretch of the Medway for a cuppa and watch the world go by for an hour or so, before heading home. One day, having found my preferred spot was clear and no fishermen or other users were there, I pulled the canoe out and set up my small day camp with my chair and stove etc. I settled in for some lunch and tea and was watching the Kingfishers darting up and down. Along the footpath about twenty mins in, a double family of two large muscular dads and heavily made up mums and four small kids in swimming kit arrived and dumped two huge back packs which had inflatable paddle boards, two large cool bags full of picnic stuff and a huge blanket. They set all this up actually touching the small piece of tarp I had under my own chair! They then stood there looming intimidatingly with the two mums not speaking but staring at their iPhones. It turned out from listening to the kids and dads that they were Russian. Then one of the dads approached me standing on my tarp and said, "How long you gonna stay?" I was utterly gobsmacked at these utterly rude sods! I told him as long as it took me to cook lunch, eat it and then drink a pot of tea and decide how long I wanted to stay. He looked really pissed off and just stood staring at me. I asked him to get off my tarp and stand away. He did, but the other guy looked really nasty. Anyway, just to piss them off, I just carried on. After about another twenty minutes of it getting really annoying, I decided they were never going to back down; by this time they had inflated the two paddle boards and were already looking at trying to move my canoe to use the same bit of bank to launch. So, I made angry noises and said I couldn't believe how rude they were and packed up and buggered off. It was really incredible and I was so angry but had no way to get rid of them. I never saw them again and I felt they may have driven from out of town and walked a fair way from their car to the spot. At which point, they just asserted themselves by intimidating me and invading my chosen spot. Clearly invading other people's space is a Russian trait! 🤬
I go with a little rule for myself. If you can park at the spot it ain’t worth the bother. Put in a little graft walk a hour or so gets you away from the park & piss it up crews. Well done for keeping the head tho mate that must have took some will power 👍
This is why whenever I go camping, I go as far away and to the most inaccessible spot I can find… I’ve completely stopped trying to go to any campgrounds or places where other people can come and easily invade my space. I can get a bit territorial at times and wouldn’t hesitate to become confrontational… that being said, 5 against 1 aren’t odds I’d like to have stacked against me without some form of force multiplier.
Happened to me at st marys loch, went for a walk and some people came and pitched right next to me, tents basically touching and were playing loud music, had to pack up and leave which sucked after a 7 hour drive and a hike haha
Pity that happened. Too common on Loch Long and Loch Lomond, even with the restrictions. Hard men in a group but probably fannies alone. Duck Bay? Do they still have a nightclub? Worked there in the 90s when I lived in the Vale.😂😂😂
From Australia, I've never experienced this when out hiking though I have had to deal with rowdy behavior at larger camp sites. I actually camped at Loch Lom in 2019 with my aunt and it was quite nice. We didn't experience this when camping but quite a few locals in the smaller towns were quite abrasive. One lady would only cook fried eggs...no scrambled...it was a hilarious conversation to say the least. We ended up staying in B&B's for the remainder of the trip because the rain was NON STOP! Hunting in the states, i found an old logging spot where a rough bridge was built over a creekat a deadend. I parked my truck just passed the bridge which prevented anyone eles from crossing.
First time watcher. Shades of the empty car park at Southwaite. 2am Buy's a coffee, sits in car with window open. Shuts my eyes Wakes up to a woman parked literally inches away from me. I couldn't have opened my car door. Don't know if she was just wary of sitting having a break in an empty service area on her own. People can be strange at times.

My wife and I were camping up in the Rocky Mountains and two guys came into camp and started to get aggressive until they realized I had a pistol in my belt under my shirt then they left

I had a permitted site in a national park in the US and that night at 11pm, an entire Boy Scout troop rolled into my reserved site. Itvwas meant for one tent, maybe 2 max. I didn't know how many there were until the morning. It was just headlamps shining into my tent and yelling. Daylight showed 8 tents!!! And most were pitched on protected vegetation. I left without even having breakfast.
I once had found a nice place to camp, but there was already a group German people camping there. I asked them nicely if it was okay if I came camping there as well, which they were completely fine with and we also held a little chat. The next morning we went both our own ways. Doesnt always have to be a bad experience to camp with strangers 😄
I've had this exact thing happen to me in the absolute middle of nowhere. At first I was angry as hell but thought I'd handle it like I generally do when someone I don't like talks to me. I "acted" weird as hell, overly friendly, told some odd creepy stories you don't want to hear a random bloke tell you in the middle of a forest. Generally made a nuisance of myself. They made their excuses and left without much fuss 🤣 Better than ending up having a blazing row and probably stops them doing it to someone else next time 🤣
There seems to be a lot of asses camping out now. They have no respect for the countryside or other people. I try to get right away from folk now. I just can't be bothered with the scruffs anymore. All booze and messing it up for the rest of us. If its on Loch Lomond, they need a permit. Maybe it's time to put the prices up and take registrations.
My husband and I have had similar experiences. We do a lot of Hiking and camping in remote locations, love getting away from others and being out in nature. I don't understand why people do those sorts of things? Is it because they are bullies and purposely trying to ruin some else's experience? I mean that's all I can think of. Why else? One particular time we were skinny dipping on a summer evening, not a soul in sight at this backwater spot, a boat suddenly came from across the way and out of the hundred plus yards of sandy beach areas they could have pulled up on they pulled up right on our beach camp site. We were completely naked and we got out of the water bare asses got dressed and sat there till they finally left. Such a weird time. They partied awhile till it got dark and left. 🙄
I live in Victoria, Australia and do a lot of deer hunting in our alpine region.
One year, I was hunting from a site where I'd pitched my 4x4 with its rooftop tent. I returned mid afternoon after a morning hunt that took me about 3km from my camp site, and found a group of guys had pitched on the same spot as me. They were the full bogan types too, sinking beers and blasting music obnoxiously at like 2:00pm.
They weren't too close or anything like that. In fact they were a good distance from my site. However, when I got to my 4x4, I immediately noticed boot prints that weren't mine around it, and that half a bag of firewood plus my good steel framed axe had disappeared. Guess where the prints led...
I sauntered over to them with my 308 rifle forward slung, stepped into their view and loudly said to them, "I understand you may have borrowed some of my kit, it's now time to return it".
After shitting their pants, they sheepishly returned my axe and now a quarter of a bag of firewood. With weak excuses about forgetting their own axe etc.
I went and packed up, then left. I wasn't going to chance any more issues. How's the cheek though, to flog my stuff thinking their numbers would dissuade me from confronting them.
And then everyone stood and CLAPPED

There have always been cowardly men who behave badly when in a gang, throughout history and in every country.
Nobody taught them manners. We live in a culture which forbids any confrontation, forces to "tolerate" everything. Nobody ever confronted them, so how would they even know. Also, they just went for this exact spot, just a few meters from the road and car park, it seems it was "their local" spot, where they "always" fish&drink, and didn't have any idea how it would be in another one... The paradox is, they also might've been "uncomfortable" that someone took "their only good" spot...
Albeit I agree that people need to work on their manners, I don't think people in the olden days would be particularly different, it would be same shit by a different asshole
I had the same thing happen to me, I was on a canoeing/fishing 3 day camping trip up a small creek in the middle of nowhere, just me and my french bulldog, I thought no one would ever be there as it was quite a paddle to get to and quite out of the way up a small side Creek.
During my trip to get there, I passed a boat with 8 adults and 6 kids having a rather loud party, they also had a couple of jet ski's and a rubber dinghy. As i continued my trip I noticed that I was being followed by them, but i didn't give it much care as I knew where I was going was going to be hard for them to get to in their large boat. I soon lost them around the shallow water bend in the creek entrance.
I got to my camp site and started setting up when I heard the jet ski's/ dinghy in the next creek along, which I presume they thought was the one i went down. I could hear them yelling "where did he go? Which I have to admit had me a little worried, but I continued to unpack my gear and set up camp.
I made lunch then decided to go further down the creek to fish, about a 20 minute paddle, the whole time still hearing the sounds of outboard motors. After about 30 minutes, I heard a jetski getting closer and thought this is getting really strange, then I see this guy on the jet ski see me then turned around straight away and take off, I had a bad feeling so started to paddle back to my campsite, as I get within sight of my camp I notice the jet ski's and dinghy on the shore, 5 tents had been set up there, a fire pit bbq going (which was my fire pit) and music blaring through speakers.
As I reached the bank they all just stared at me like I was an unwanted trespasser although the look on my face probably wasn't one of happiness at this point.
As I made my way up the embankment I noticed that my tent had been un-pegged and dragged to the edge off the camp-site, my fishing gear I left had been gone through with some missing and my esky had been gone through and my 3 tomahawk steaks, bacon, sausages, eggs, bread rolls and my 2 bottles of rum were gone, needless to say, I was not happy and started to make my way over to the group to confront them, as I approached I notice one of the older guys pick up a axe quite menacingly, by now their kids have also hopped into my canoe and started going through my stuff in there.
I could see my steaks/sausages cooking away on my fire pit grill along with their terrible sizzle steaks and cheap sausages, my half drunk rum bottles on their table with buttered bread rolls/salads ect among their food and drinks.
I said to the group as I approached why did they move my tent and steal my fishing gear/fire pit and food, to which one of the guys said they had to move my tent as it could have caught on fire from the BBQ pit, but denied going through or taking my stuff, to which I replied that it seems amazing that everything I'm missing you seem to have, to which the guy holding the axe told me I'd better leave as I'm making the women with them feel unsafe and he might have to do something about it, I decided it wasn't worth my life arguing with these low life thieves, so I decided to cut my losses and retreat to safety and some place that I could get phone reception to call the police.
As I was trying to pack my belongings into the canoe while getting drunken abuse hurled at me, I kept having to tell the kids to get out of my canoe, to which the parents told me I have no right to tell them what to do.
When I was packed two kids were refusing to get out so I pushed off with them in still in it, the adults started screaming and running for the jet ski's, but the kids quickly jumped out in waist deep water and walked to shore as I was pelted with abuse and rocks. Also one of the women in the group really liked my dog and kept calling her over, telling her she was a good dog and saying how I was cruel to take her camping and she was going to keep her and give her a better home, unfortunately for her she couldn't hang on to her as she struggled to get back to me.
The police said they went out there but couldn't find them or my stuff, but I doubt they did as I returned about 6 months later and found my fire pit still in the same place and my 2 broken fishing rods there minus the reels my empty rum bottles and all their garbage they just dumped.
I now take mace whenever I go camping alone.
So camping is not safe at all. Families behaving like this is messed up.
@abl1699 This isn't the only time I've had a bad camping experience caused by people who were over intoxicated but was definitely my worst. I've had a lot of good times camping with no problems at all and have generally felt safe.

This happened to me and my husband. We had a fire on the beach, having lunch and 6 cars show up RIGHT NEXT TO US, like, 1 car width away and out pops 22 people! They were city folks and they were so loud. They had the entire coastline to choose from. They’re were barely any people on the beach that day. We packed up and left but I was effing livid!
Surely, if you own the coastline you politely point that out to them and ask them to leave?

I've had a similar experience in Ontario, Canada. My group had set up camp close by the water of the campsite, so our shelters were not easily visible upon entering the campsite, however we made sure to leave our water filtration, chairs, and other things in the main camp area so people knew we were there. A family comes and "claims" the site. I tell them we are literally camped down by the water which they could easily have seen where we were at. They refused to leave the site as we weren't camped in an obvious spot. It doesn't matter where we were, we were part of that campsite. I told them they can pitch their tents on our site if they want but they'll have to shit in the same hole as us, eat at the same table as us, share the same food locker, and walk through the same areas as us if they were to stay. They left afterwards after realizing their entitlement would inconvenience them and ruin their trip.
I've also had experiences where I've gladly helped fellow Hikers set up camp at our site if it was raining and sun was setting and they've asked respectfully.
I once returned to my tent to find someone had erected theirs right next to mine, they even put their guy ropes inside my outer skin.
Luckily I snore pretty loudly and they left early the next day 😂

That's the problem with this world, everyone trying to make everyone else a good little boy, but no one really knows what that means. We've lost a lot of our humanity to complacency and domestication. We are actually made weaker, dumber, and less independently viable because of it. Exactly same thing happened to me last week in a camping ground in Germany. I was the only one on the green, went out, came back and 2 large tents were build right before my nose. Family gathering. Before my tent there was a table with banks and people were sittingthere having dinner and a childrens riding hors. The whole place was empty, they did this purposefully. I took my tent and moved away and one of the guys said, I did not want to disturb you. (Yeah)...

That´s when you stumble with a fire source and burn their tenst down, with the words i did not wanted that your tents burn down.... . I woke up early one morning to find a tent set up behind mine and a little kid trying to light a fire in-between our tents while his mum watched. So incredibly inconsiderate some people are.
Back in the 1980s my son and I would do a back country canoe trips. One year there was a group of teenage girls with adult counselors leading them. They camped right next to my son and I because I had a firearm and there were bear around. The next day we left down a river and they caught up with us at lunch because we were taking our time fishing. We passed them later in the day and I figured out they wanted to camp next to us again. In the evening we pulled off and I figured I’d fake them out. We set up just our rainfly and had supper when they pulled in and set up camp. We packed our rainfly and headed back down the river a few miles. They were freaking out, but at least we had peace and quiet that night.

Neat, I'm partying with them then. Except I'll be on that sneaky water while shoving my vodka shots on them. Around 3am or whenever they start to crash out = I would begin to set up a bit of a prank. Kind that leaves you not camping anymore, just drunk in the woods with half your shit gone or ruined, suddenly and with much commotion.
There might be carefully considered rearrangements of sharp sticks that can't be seen in the dark. Combined with missing light sources. All that cordage yet have you ever actually tripwired anything? Things that could walk off quietly while drunks slept might have been on fire for a full hour before I kick things off. If I know where they parked this is going to get expensive. Boats = the same idea except I have always wanted to fully sink one.
And I will be gone by the time anyone is aware of what I've done quietly and quickly in the dead of the night. But a message will be sent.
I gave up camping at that spot years ago. Arseholes like that have left a dump of plastic, beer bottles, shitty toilet paper, and even used tampons, etc. Google Earth further south and explore through dense vegetation, there's some superb one-person pitches right on the water. Good luck on your future adventures

I had the exact opposite problem. Went camping about 1hour from very small town. (Very small, one pub, one servo and no houses) with 3 other adults. That night we were hassled by station kids partying in their utes and trucks for a couple of hours out at the national park.
Yes, assholes hooting all night boozed up, why they dont stay at a bar and do that, is what pissed.me off, we came.for peace now we have that trash.
As kids and young adults, mind you we live in bc canada 🇨🇦 camping capital, we'd travel on old logging road to remote places and rarely had problems. This was pre 1990s. Now all those remote places are covered with camp grounds that will cost you over 20$ a night. It's wise to reserve, and they are still beautiful places to go.
Since then I moved to acreage to camp every day😅😅😅😅.

You gotta remember alot of city people go to paid camping sites often where everything is packed. City people are usually never alone for long and they see another tent as a friendly SPACIOUS camp site since there's ONLY one tent. Really different mentality and I'm sure explaining etiquette to people in a mature way while you're pissed off isn't the easiest to do

Same thing happened to me in the Cairngornns over one New Year. Already pitched in the snow sheltered behind a bank with my wife. Two winter walkers rocked up and pitched 8 metres away. In a 6 square kilometre valley. I asked if they were pitching there and the reply was "good a place as any". Went hoping for solitude and ended up listening to their route planning conversation all evening.
Thats when you politely saunter over to their tent, and begin pissing all over it. "good enough place as any"
I live in Nevada close to the California border on the eastern flank of the Sierras. I do quite a bit of solo camping as I live on my own. I don’t often run into these types of situations and I think it’s because I live in America and I take guns with me when I go camping and it’s safe to assume everybody else does too, so it really creates a nice and polite environment so everyone gets along.
Really sorry that happened to you, pal. Some people think the world revolves around themselves. Can see it rattled you a bit, and it would me even more! You handled it perfectly and set a good example in face of a terrible one when it would've been easy to stoop to their level 👍

G'day, from NZ, our forests are vast, and we don't have these problems (except in the high tourist areas), but having said that, one time I was in a very remote area and was surprised to find that when I awoke in the morning, there was a tent pitched about 5 metres from me. there was plenty of places to pitch (it was by a river) but they decided that my place was the better one. I was out for 4 days, and this person was the only person I was to see. It does spoil the remote feeling, but this is very rare. Anyway, that's my little story on that subject. Many years ago myself, my wife pitched a tent on a 10 acre field in Norfolk. We were the only tent In that field, we went out for a few hours and when we came back another tent had appeared 10 feet away from ours. We just laughed, packed up our tent and moved

I'm an Aussie and I'm constantly frustrated with this behaviour.
I'm also Aussie and mate it does get pretty bad down here like that. People have a weird craving for socialization towards other people, and whilst sometimes it can just be meant as trying to be friendly, often it's for no reason other than perhaps a strange herd mentality. With no consideration that maybe we don't all want to start a flock!

there was someone having a similar problem and they bought some very strong fart spray online.and it was extremely noxious. The next time they had neighbors that were too close they sprayed it outside around their camper van. The people left right away.
Good call moving. A night next to the trackie bottom brigade would be horrible. Out of order what they did. I done a bike packing trip last week well away from there had a 81mile ride home after climbing over rest and be thankful I emerged at Lomond looking for easy relaxing mostly flat ride home after that. Bout 30yrs ago me my wife and our two young boys were tent camping in the Mt. Hood, Orygun Forest. Soon a bunch of younger ppl pretty much took over the small camping area complete with a large sign by the road. They did their best to make us leave, saying they have this big party every year and they would be too loud for us. I said the noise wouldn't bother us, so he gave up. A state cop showed up told them what they were doing was illegal (too many ppl in one spot) and kicked them all out !! We had a nice chat with the Officer, peacfully sitting by our camp 🔥 fire ... I would've done the same as you in that scenario.

I'm mixed on this. Why those people might have been assholes and their might be plenty other spots, I don't think anyone is entitled to have a spot just for himself. Nature is a public place, and I think it is a good practice to not privatise it, even temporarily. If one want to be alone, just don't pitch on the best spot in the area.
The problem is they said they're locals and they're not moving. Territorial locals are the biggest problem.

If people want a fenced in campsite with toilets etc then they are available. but these guys wouldn't have gotten away with a rowdy night due to people pressure and they would have been outnumbered. Have stayed in that hotel its beautiful. We didn't go on coach holiday we went self drive. It's lovely. My husband is Scottish and we love going to the lochs so beautiful. Have noticed since van life has become so popular there is a lot of mess left behind. Not nice to see

I grew up camping in the Loch Lomond area and over the past 25 years it has got worse. It has really spoiled whatbused to be a specual place.
You've never camped in any of the trailer courts they call campgrounds in the eastern US. Last month (Oct.), I decided that 60 years of camping is enough. I'm through. It's not that this old grey mare ain't what she used to be, it's camping that ain't what it used to be. "Do you have a reservation" "No." "There's just one site I can give you." I was in a van and my assigned parking space was in a double to be shared with my neighbor with her rooftop tent. I never slept that close to the sister I shared a bedroom with! Then it occurred to me that the population density there was at least as concentrated as an apartment building. Concentration camps. What I'm quitting isn't really camping anyway.
I mostly do dispersed camping (TVA or USFS) now as I'm on a motorcycle in the lower Appalachians and a small tent or tarp. No reservations, just 1st come and typically no fee (no water or bathrooms).
Last summer I decided to go back to a large 25 space campground. USFS has stopped taking envelope money ($10/night) and wants me to pay by app in an area with no cell service.
It was noisy, crowded, banging RV doors all evening, bright lights, generators, TVs, kids running wild, banging trash can lids (nobody seems to be able to close a lid slowly).
I may use such a site again in the off season but if they are too damned lazy to pick up money, they are obviously too damned lazy to clean the sites....just outsourced garbage pickup and broken well heads.
@@STho205 My final experience WAS in the off season (Oct.). I optimistically expected the place to be half empty. And it was. So they closed 1/2 and kept the other 1/2 just as crowded as in the peak season. So I went to another state park 1/2 hour away. Same thing, but about 3/4 : 1/4, by reservation only. So I went back to the first place. The office had closed by this time. So I stayed in an empty reserved space. No fee (Ha, Ha), and in the AM, I just drove the 4 hrs. home. My own home has much more of what I want in a vacation than any of these noisy concentration camps.

Dispersed camping is best as you expect little but a plot of ground...come prepared to be self sufficient and don't overly imagine getting attacked on your own...it is a better time.
Many campgrounds went to sh-+ in 2020 when they closed and never restaffed
@@STho205 I started camping in 1965. For the next decade, anyone could easily find enough firewood to last most of a weekend trip within 1/2 hr. of arrival. In an off season, no one ever camped within sight. It was often an ear strain just to hear their axes. My kids never took to camping the way I did. I couldn't understand it until I realized that they never experienced what I did; and what I have been loving about it was all in my imagination and the memory of a distant past that no longer exists.

I would have mentioned something along the lines of ''You should have asked me first. I had a very loose stomach last night and thats right were I squatted to do my buisness'' Cant you smell it?'' Explain that you cant get far from your tent before you need to squat. Explain you have a 'condition' and thats why none of your friends will camp with you so your always camping alone.
You could get really creative if you have a chocolate bar. Melt some and smear it on your hands or face....
Make sure to try and shake their hands afterward. Keep asking them if they have any extra toilet paper. Explain to them, in detail, of your horrendous bowl movements and how it got ''everywhere'' Keep asking them '' Are you sure you want to sleep right there in that mess?''

This is also familiar in Finland. Guys who always leave behind a lot of empty beer cans, cigarette butts, garbage, trees condemned to death near the campfire that have been cut down with birch bark or pine bark for kindling. Of course, you can't "get" the firewood from the firewood shed next door. Illegal campfires....burnt marks left by the woodstove on the wooden tables, on the seats, several wildfires in the summer because of the woodstove idiots.

Who would just stroll up on another pitch and make camp? Without a hiya, would you mind? I had a lovely little space years back, all out the way but the oiks needed a place to do pallet fires and questionable things with paraffffenalia so sadly I had to do the same, bear in mind I usually was out with a rucksack of photo op "cutlery" so a case of walk away and deal with it, barely got out since...
Camping use to be good back in days . And then we had more campers and litters , the place became a mess . And then they decided to control and make money out of the lot , creating those camp sides full of idiots , and you had to pay . Best advice next time , don’t pay , walk a little further of the bam and enjoy your evening . Scotland outdoor is fantastic a little bit further is awesome . Go further , free , no rubbish , no idiots .
We were at loch lomond as well. There are camp sites which allows to camp officially. But you have to pay for it first for like 4 weeks earlier. So the areas are relatively small and after walking 25 km and paid for that area. I understand that guys.
Sorry that happened to you dude; there are good spots further south outside the permit zone at Dail, All't a Guanan outflow and Mark bothy. You used to be able to see if any other permits had been sold when you were booking a spot, I used to use it to help me decide where to go.

I've only had this happen once. I took my holster and switched it to open carry and then told them "you're gonna leave, one way or the other, in the next 30 minutes."
It all depends on the situation...You arrive late, there's no place... You find a spot and ask nicely if they mind that you pitch your tent and don't make noise and go to bed.... that's fine by me. But a group like this with this situation.... kinda rude
It is inconceivable how cras, selfish, ignorant and down right arrogant some folk are! They clearly have no clue at all about the sanctity of outdoor life and how important it is to let people just be and get on with their own thing.
I used to live in Kent and do a lot of open canoeing. One of my regular trips was just a day out along a short stretch of the Medway for a cuppa and watch the world go by for an hour or so, before heading home. One day, having found my preferred spot was clear and no fishermen or other users were there, I pulled the canoe out and set up my small day camp with my chair and stove etc. I settled in for some lunch and tea and was watching the Kingfishers darting up and down. Along the footpath about twenty mins in, a double family of two large muscular dads and heavily made up mums and four small kids in swimming kit arrived and dumped two huge back packs which had inflatable paddle boards, two large cool bags full of picnic stuff and a huge blanket. They set all this up actually touching the small piece of tarp I had under my own chair! They then stood there looming intimidatingly with the two mums not speaking but staring at their iPhones. It turned out from listening to the kids and dads that they were Russian.
Then one of the dads approached me standing on my tarp and said, "How long you gonna stay?"
I was utterly gobsmacked at these utterly rude sods!
I told him as long as it took me to cook lunch, eat it and then drink a pot of tea and decide how long I wanted to stay. He looked really pissed off and just stood staring at me. I asked him to get off my tarp and stand away. He did, but the other guy looked really nasty. Anyway, just to piss them off, I just carried on. After about another twenty minutes of it getting really annoying, I decided they were never going to back down; by this time they had inflated the two paddle boards and were already looking at trying to move my canoe to use the same bit of bank to launch. So, I made angry noises and said I couldn't believe how rude they were and packed up and buggered off. It was really incredible and I was so angry but had no way to get rid of them. I never saw them again and I felt they may have driven from out of town and walked a fair way from their car to the spot. At which point, they just asserted themselves by intimidating me and invading my chosen spot. Clearly invading other people's space is a Russian trait! 🤬

I go with a little rule for myself. If you can park at the spot it ain’t worth the bother. Put in a little graft walk a hour or so gets you away from the park & piss it up crews. Well done for keeping the head tho mate that must have took some will power 👍

This is why whenever I go camping, I go as far away and to the most inaccessible spot I can find… I’ve completely stopped trying to go to any campgrounds or places where other people can come and easily invade my space. I can get a bit territorial at times and wouldn’t hesitate to become confrontational… that being said, 5 against 1 aren’t odds I’d like to have stacked against me without some form of force multiplier.
This is why you need to be prepared with countermeasures.
Happened to me at st marys loch, went for a walk and some people came and pitched right next to me, tents basically touching and were playing loud music, had to pack up and leave which sucked after a 7 hour drive and a hike haha

From Australia, I've never experienced this when out hiking though I have had to deal with rowdy behavior at larger camp sites.
I actually camped at Loch Lom in 2019 with my aunt and it was quite nice. We didn't experience this when camping but quite a few locals in the smaller towns were quite abrasive. One lady would only cook fried eggs...no scrambled...it was a hilarious conversation to say the least.
We ended up staying in B&B's for the remainder of the trip because the rain was NON STOP!

Hunting in the states, i found an old logging spot where a rough bridge was built over a creekat a deadend. I parked my truck just passed the bridge which prevented anyone eles from crossing.

I had a permitted site in a national park in the US and that night at 11pm, an entire Boy Scout troop rolled into my reserved site. Itvwas meant for one tent, maybe 2 max. I didn't know how many there were until the morning. It was just headlamps shining into my tent and yelling. Daylight showed 8 tents!!! And most were pitched on protected vegetation. I left without even having breakfast.
Only eight tents? That's just a patrol.
I once had found a nice place to camp, but there was already a group German people camping there. I asked them nicely if it was okay if I came camping there as well, which they were completely fine with and we also held a little chat. The next morning we went both our own ways. Doesnt always have to be a bad experience to camp with strangers 😄

I've had this exact thing happen to me in the absolute middle of nowhere. At first I was angry as hell but thought I'd handle it like I generally do when someone I don't like talks to me.
I "acted" weird as hell, overly friendly, told some odd creepy stories you don't want to hear a random bloke tell you in the middle of a forest. Generally made a nuisance of myself.
They made their excuses and left without much fuss 🤣

My husband and I have had similar experiences. We do a lot of Hiking and camping in remote locations, love getting away from others and being out in nature. I don't understand why people do those sorts of things? Is it because they are bullies and purposely trying to ruin some else's experience? I mean that's all I can think of. Why else? One particular time we were skinny dipping on a summer evening, not a soul in sight at this backwater spot, a boat suddenly came from across the way and out of the hundred plus yards of sandy beach areas they could have pulled up on they pulled up right on our beach camp site. We were completely naked and we got out of the water bare asses got dressed and sat there till they finally left. Such a weird time. They partied awhile till it got dark and left. 🙄
Mostly because they feel uncomfortable. They do not have enough skills. They are scared of being at night in the middle of nowhere.
