Kee is a year 13 Regent's student who hopes to study medicine.

He’s making pretty decent jokes but the silence is making me super uncomfortable, poor guy. A really interesting talk though.

Even if you're asian, stop saying that this particular Tedx talk is bad; a rant.
This guy is just explaining Asian stereotypes. He may sound like endless complaints but you want to know what is the worst? Us asians becoming these asian stereotypes. He may be quiet bias to the fact that these stereotypes are ridiculous. But, as being asian, these things are true. Plus, if no one talks about this issue, who else will?

I know this person. His name is P'Kee (obvious, I don't need to point that out XD). He's very nice and feels passionate. Before you say that it's not Tedx-worthy, keep in mind that this is a talk at a school where students can talk about ideas that are worth sharing. If he wants to complain about this, LET HIM. He threw in emotions and hate to prove a point. Just by reading the comments from some people, I can tell that he won. You thought that it was worth expressing your opinion about it and therefore, he caught your attention! Better yet! You might have told your friends about this 'guy who throws in endless complaints and hates everyone'. Great! The video and his message were spread out. The 302 people that clicked like, THANKS! But... the 31 DISLIKES show that people paid enough attention to come to a conclusion that his talk was 'bad' enough to click the thumbs down icon. Maybe this video and P'Kee's talk stuck in your mind... I don't know. But in my opinion, I think that he won because he got his point across and made you pay attention to it. Oops!

The goal, is it not, is to action and innovation and ideas on ways for us to do so -correct? Don't we have the internet for the memes of life? For me, being an Asian-Australian it's almost the same situation. Except for the fact that my Mother (being Japanese) didn't really teach me Japanese or anything. Of course I can understand common sayings but I am not able to participate in a legitimate conversation in Japanese. To add to that, I don't exactly look Asian either, at all. Also, my school actually exposes the kids to Japanese culture since Japanese is a language they teach. This whole thing SUCKS.
People don't even realise they're plain out insulting half of my race in front of me. In my school it's the norm to have black racism frowned upon except asian racism are okay? Personally i'd rather no racism at all but this fact is infuriating. Also, any attempt I make at defending half of me, my mother and my grandparents is perceived as me being "sensitive" or having no sense of humour. There are also so many other things like people saying "learning Japanese is a complete waste of time and the language and culture sucks anyway" or "imma just write kim kung chong chung and get an A."
To me, these kinds of things really need to be addressed and more often than not goes unnoticed.
I find it rather cool that you have japanese roots .... i went to japan some years ago and what i perceived was instead as in europe that it was civilised people in a civilised country ... [ europe = just civilised countries ] ....
@Sebastian Snoeck You're doing exactly what the OP is pointing out...Seems you made an assumption that Japan might not be 'civilised' before you got there. But why that assumption though? And what's 'civilised' anyway? If you mean ithat Europe is industrialized, then consider that industrialization is having a negative impact on the planet. There are advantages and disadvantages to most things. We should stop looking down on people for how they live because if we look closely at how we live, we will start seeing that we have issues too.
I was talking to two of my friends who are boys (I'm a girl), and we were discussing our favourite school subjects. Mine was math (I have blonde hair), and Brian said that he hates math. Calvin said "Aren't you supposed to like math?" I looked Brian in the eye and said; "Grow up".

No joke, I was in Taiwan for a month and made a friend. He looked at a photo of my friends and I back in the US. All of us had different eye colors, hair colors, and hight. Then he said "you all look the same". We both died laughing.

Thank you for that great talk. I have so many experiences like that, even now working in a hospital as a doctor, people around me with academic backgrounds making that kind of “funny asian jokes “. For me they are insulting my race. There was one time I freaked out after 2 weeks of daily asian jokes, i said “shut the f*** up”. Suddenly i got suspended and was called to the chief. I had to apologize, but those people didn’t have to apologize for their asian jokes. Because in their and the chiefs mind, those comments are not racism. Even if i point out, that its racism, no one believed me. They keep telling me, that i am the one who is constantly overreacting. And I was thinking, maybe they were right. I started blaming myself. But thanks to the asian community in the internet and your talk i realized, that the problem was them and not me.
So damn true, In my physic class, When Asian solved the hard problems , the teacher told us that I didn’t believe you could solve it, so I thought you are cheating, wtf, .....

I'm a white Canadian living in Asia. Sometimes kids point at me and call me a "foreigner" while others characterize me as every stereotype under the sun. It is important to grow a spine and recognize that it is impossible for others to have shared your own life experience. Everyone makes generalizations about everything. Next time the professionally offended lecture you about this, ask them, "What's the difference between Niger and Nigeria?" Watch them stumble into their own trap.

Stereotype is different for different Asian. For Maths etc is Chinese/Korean. Not Thai. For Thai people think massage/escorts/ladyboy/kickboxing.

When people ask me what kind of asian i am i say. Yes its all true! We are half breed aliens thats why we are good with math and have weird eyes then I do the alien spacecraft sound.

I'm an asian myself and I definitely has more sense of humor than this guy. He could bring this topic better, it's sound like an endless complaints with a pinch of hate the whole time.

I'm sick and tire of seeing all these Ted talk where Asian ramble on about Racism and Stereotypes over the simplest thing. These Ted talk is adding fuel to the fire, not putting it out. talking and mentioning racism and stereotype DON'T stop people from doing it. Just stop talking about it. and mentioning it. and stop being butt hurt over the littlest things.

Someone asked me if I am from Colombia, Mexico, Nicaragua etc but I am Asian. I am not offended I find it funny lol. I asked a local in Austria how long he has been studying german (he is a local by the way), I thought he was english.

It's better and more polite to ask "where your parents are from?" rather than ask them "where are you from?"
Everything that is a stereotype should be something that we all should do opposite. Except the smart at math and science, that one we accept.
But if they say we are weak and small, then we should start researching how to get taller and stronger.
What will Change the world thoughts of stereotypes is if more Asian go into the NBA, NFL, Hockey, weight lifting, More Asian male celebrity starring in American movies, more romantic scene with Asians.
All of this will help change people perspective and stereotypes. They gonna realize especially if there is h Th e majority of us. They will start to question themselves.

Intentions may have been good but his performance and delivery were cringeworthy as it comes off as hypocritical. He thinks all people think the way he thinks.

I happen to be a white guy living in an Asian county... I get asked all the time where I am from, and people that don't ask assume I'm from the US (I'm not). I don't get your point. How is that different from assuming all Asian people are Chinese for example?
People here assume things about me that often are not true, but I can see those stereo types have a history and some truth behind them. I politely explain we are not all the same but it doesn't bother me. I get where it comes from and who am I to get pissed of at them for not knowing everything about the world? Most of them have never left the country let alone speak English.
Are we supposed to lecture all people all over the world how they are supposed to think? All uniform, all the same? Punish those that think different or god forbid just don't know? I don't want to live in that "perfect" world, I'll take it with a bit impurity thank you. Would be pretty damn boring otherwise.
There's a difference. I got that people are ignorant and all, and people who never really had interaction with other races or travelled enough, they can't tell the difference among the same race, I got that. But, in the USA, Asians are degraded or stereotyped in the media, whereas in Asia, this phenomenon doesn't exist. The worst is that a lot of Americans believe in those stereotypes.
Good point. I wonder if anyone's done research on the type of different treatment certain races/cultures receive in different countries. From my experience, a white or black person would receive better treatment in an East Asian or South East Asian country than an asian person would in a more Western country.
White people would receive better treatment but for black people maybe not so much. Asian countries have huge exposure to Hollywood films that basically set the beauty standard in Asia, along with k pop and other Asian pop cultures. Plus, Asian people usually treat foreigners very well.

OK. Iam tired of all the ethics coming to western countries and then complaining about not being accepted. If you are so great then why don't you stay in your countries. Why don't you build up your countries so that the west has to recognize your power. Why do you constantly whine. Why do you come to West and demand rights? Why not fight your government back in your own countries and gain your freedom there? You come to West and demand to be treated just like the people that built these countries. On what basis. I am not a westerner by the way.
sadly he is just a product of the oversensitive generation we live in. None of those things he talked about were actually "racist". Also it is borderline arrogant to think that if someone does't know every detail of your personal culture or that is simply incorrect about their thoughts of what your culture might entail, that they might be racist or insensitive. Humans are prone to make stereotypes because when you see trends in a group your brain is wired to establish guesses or notions in order to defend itself or for it to improve your life. And as far as your opinions of memes. dont be so sensitive of humor, humor is what it is because of the freedom within it... you dont have to like it all the time. but if your feelings are hurt every time a meme suggests a stereotype to asians , then you are in for a long rough life of hurt and awkward confrontations.
Sadly, you are one of the millions of people who don't understand how truly bad Asian representation is in America and England. While I can't speak for the rest of the western countries, I do know that our stereotypes; we being the butt of jokes make up a large fraction of how we are portrayed in the media and so why wouldn't we complain? Because of how little people know or understand what our culture is or how we struggle, too much of a large population think it's okay because they cannot empathise. How much do you know about discrimination towards Asians in the past? How much do you know about Asian culture outside of our stereotypes? Why is it that the history books never talk about latino or Asian who lived their countries?
Yes, the man in this video could have delivered this better. A lot of the time people who complain are just oversensitive and can't deal with it but this problem is something that we shouldn't just live with. People need to be educated more about Asian culture or at least Asian-american/English because we are seen too much as a joke than we as are people.

The problem with the majority group leveling stereotypes at the other groups is they do not see them as 'normal' people or distinct individuals. Their actions get grouped in with people who look like them and it's unfair. The majority group sees themselves as the default. They get to be individuals. Their actions do not reflect on other people of their group. People should try to learn about others, and especially if someone says something is offensive to them, listen.
