  • North Korean defector, Hyeonseo Lee opens her own life and losses to the world in order to illuminate a human rights tragedy that has for too long rested in the shadows.
    Great or small, our losses stay with us, unshakeable even as we grow beyond them. Hyeonseo Lee knows about loss. A North Korean defector, Hyeonseo once thought her country the best on earth. In 1995 her beliefs and life were shattered as the truths of famine, death and brutality crashed upon her. Her survival depended on her ability to escape North Korea to restart her life, but at a high price̶the loss of her family, home and country. Since escaping North Korea, Hyeonseo has risen to be a powerful voice for human rights, speaking in front of the UN Security Council and sharing her story and the plight of North Korean refugees across the world through speaking engagements and written articles featured in major newspapers, magazines and journals. By opening her own life and losses to the world, Hyeonseo Lee has helped illuminate a human rights tragedy that has for too long rested in the shadows, and along the way, has transformed loss into the promise of hope.

      +Happy Hamster Korea has only been split for about 70 years. It seems unlikely that North Koreans won't be "up to speed" in a few generations.
      And even if the GDP per capita goes down a bit, so what? Surely humans are more important than money. It is unlikely that Korea will become so poor people will be starving.

      +eizhowa are you Korean?. Yes,Korea has been split only for seventy years,but for sure I can tell you North Koreans would die trying to integrate to a society as complex as South Korean... I spent five years of my life in Seoul... :)

    • @eizhowa
      @eizhowa 7 лет назад +123

      +Happy hamster No, I am not korean. I was speaking based on my experience with foreigners trying to integrate into my society (Norway). My experience is that the original immigrants often struggle to adapt to our society, but their children grow up understanding the society/culture they live in because they have been to norwegian schools, learnt the norwegian curriculum, had norwegian friends as well as being exposed to the society all their lives.
      The example wouldn't be as effective if all koreans from the south stayed in the south and all the koreans from the north stayed in the north, but if the entire country had the same laws and same curriculum at school, they will soon start to see the world in a more similar way. New businesses opening in the North would also aid the integration. I can imagine that businesses would love to expand into the north, because I think they would see North-Korea as an untapped market where they could make big gains.

      aand this is what's toxic with our society. Just because someone has it harder than you (and there's always that someone), doesn't mean your own struggles are not worth talking about. Rememeber, as hard as she has it, there are people who have it even harder than her. Of course if your problem is 'oh, I lost my phone I'm so depressed I wanna die' that would be a case to tell you, you're ricridlous. But a lot of people in 'safe' coutnriesn also face real struggles, which society often acts like can't be. What, a country that is devleoped, has a democracy, how on earth can one complain? Yes, it can happen. I'm from Germany and while it look like an awsome place, a lot of people too struggle and live in poverty.

    What a brave young lady. South Korea needs to find means to make it easier for North Korean defectors to enter the country to freedom. There's absolutely no need for them to have to go through Thailand or Laos, that's ridiculous. These people suffered enough under N. Korea! May God bless her, and may He set the other captives free.

    • @IcewhipRoxx
      @IcewhipRoxx 7 лет назад +72

      It's true that more countries should come to the aid of North Korean people (not to enact Godwin's law, but it's pretty obvious that Kim Jon Un is only a few concentration camps away from being Hitler). However, I don't think it's that simple. They have an army, and they aren't going to be shy about using them. North Korea already has enough beef with South Korea without them taking in refugees.
      They need to protect their own people, or both Korea's will be fucked, either in all out war that tears apart both countries, or from Kim Jong Un taking over South Korea in said war and turning the entire area into one big North Korea. Now take that into consideration and add that to the fact that if South Korea opened it's boarders, nearly everyone would want to leave. Add in also the fact that North Korea guards it's boarder of the South more powerfully than we guard the White House, with guards ordered to shoot on sight. It's not that easy. The South Korean government is walking on very fragile egg shells here, and nothing is so simple when tip toeing around powerful people.
      Until there's an all out war to take him down, no amount of refugee harboring will help enough. Kim Jong Un and his loyal army will tear down the door of anyone he needs to in order to keep the fear of him alive in both his people and his neighboring countries. He needs to be taken out of power (or out of this mortal coil. Whichever works) if these people are ever going to be free of him.
      I think a more effective solution would be for the UN to gather together in secret and formulate a plan to take Kim Jong Un out of power. That way, it will be safer for other countries to offer asylum without the threat of an all out war hovering over them.
      It sucks that we can't just take them away to some blissful Neverland of freedom and democracy. It's not fair, it's not right, and it's infuriating. But unless there's either an organized, planned agreement to take Kim Jong Un down, or some North Korean, rebellious, gun-wielding Moses come to crash take down the Korean Pharo and set his people free, there is really nothing that can be done without a ridiculous amount of effort and risk on the part of the refugees. Sad, but sadly true.

      The bigger problem is not in freeing them, but in what happens afterwards. because every citizen is mind washed and completely believes in the lies which are taught there from birth. there is no internet, no one even knows there is something like the internet in this world there, television only has 3 channels which all only show kim jong, no form of communication, their kindergarten poems are all based on his greatness.
      and the cost of stabilizing the country afterward is too much for any country to bear.

      There's no way that can be done practically, unless China's government made the rather radical decision to send Koreans to the South. That could cause numerous complications!
      For what it's worth, defectors also have gone through Mongolia, Vietnam (I think), and Russia. Plus, there have been maritime defections to Japan or straight to the ROK, plus a few soldiers have gotten through the DMZ.
      All in all, the best thing would be for the US government to heed John Feffer's expert advice and get off the peninsula. The US presence in the ROK (and nearby in Japan) is a massive factor preventing the Koreans from solving their own problems. The ROK is a prosperous country that can protect itself (they have an already strong military, twice the population of the DPRK, and dozens of times the economic power). The same is true for Japan, by the way.

      don't believe everything you see in the internet. most of these are just black propaganda. lots of so-called defectors came out to speak against NK and the 1st thing you will wonder about is that - they are very good in English. there was a number one speaker who have attended lots of public shows regarding this issue. she escaped 3 to 5 years ago but her English is really good. there is a Korean woman who was working in an English speaking country for a long time and married an american and lived in the US for more than 27 years already, and her English pronunciation is not as good as this lady in the vid or the girl that escaped 5 years ago from NK. my point is that - there are groups who hire koreans to *speak against NK* to strengthen the hate that the world have for Kim Jong Un. i don't agree on his style, but what is the difference of those people who creates *lies* about NK too?

The one child policy (now two child policy) is still violently enforced in some areas. What I mean is, I spoke with a man whose friend lost teeth. Beating women as a method of forcing them to miscarry happens sometimes. I know another man who spoke out about this and was imprisoned for slightly over seven years for obstruction of traffic. This was the obstruction of traffic which he was supposedly responsible for when the police were placing him under arrest (since the police cars blocked the road). As a Chinese myself I do know some stories of people escaping from NK to China by crossing through the northern boarder, and those are the most courageous stories I have ever heard. No regime in the world can lock their people from the truth forever.

    omg she is so brave... She ran to a foreign country on her own, seperated from her family for a long time, gets hunted all the time, flew back to the hell hole, brought her family with her, almost got everyone arrested and then here she is now, making this speech... I feel like we take sooo many things for granted and forget to appreciate what we have, while there are people out there dreaming for a life like ours... Thank you so much for this speech Hyeonseo, it was really an eye opening speech and i hope you live a good life with ur family

      No. They were told- and showed photos of- rows and rows of people suffering and dying on the sidewalk outside a hospital, and told that's the common condition here. Hell yes we have a grossly immoral number of people who die from lack of healthcare here in the richest country on Earth, but we do NOT have rows of people dead and dying on hospital sidewalks. Yet, anyway. Give Trump a little more time.
