She now uses her camera (and her superpower) to shed light on the clash of cultures between Muslim parents who prioritise honour and their children's desire for freedom. Deeyah Khan is a critically acclaimed music producer and Emmy and Peabody award-winning documentary film director. Her work highlights human rights, women's voices and freedom of expression. Her skill as a multidisciplinary artist led her to film and music as the language for her social activism. Born in Norway to immigrant parents of Pashtun and Punjabi ancestry, the experience of living between different cultures, both the challenges and the beauty, dominates her artistic vision.
Her 2012 multi-award winning documentary Banaz: A Love Story chronicles the life and death of Banaz Mahmod. Her second film the Bafta-nominated Jihad involved two years of interviews and filming with Islamic extremists, convicted terrorists and former jihadis.
Deeyah is the founder of social purpose arts and media production company, Fuuse which works to create intercultural dialogue and understanding by confronting the most complex and controversial topics, and sharing alternative views and excluded voices.

It’s true. The amount of times our parents didn’t let us do something because they were scared about ‘what people were going to say’.

Because of Banaz Mahmod, the UK now has a unit dedicated to the (mostly) women who are being forced into marriage. They have a 24/7 hotline & officers who have been specially trained on what to do, what to ask & how to act. And they can & DO act fast to save those who are being forced into marriage. Australia also has teams. In the larger cities, many US police depts. followed suit. Because of her, Banaz has helped save many MANY lives. Although the world would be a better place with her in it now, her death was not in vain. She's a hero to many.

@Juli E...Thanks for the reminder. Europe must demand integration for people who come from other countries to live there. The laws must apply to everyone to keep a cohesive society. I am so glad there are people helping these women. The 'AHA' organization in the U.S. helps women in these circumstances. I hope if there is a desperate woman out there in this kind of circumstance, she will read this, and find the correct help.
@@serpentines6356 I'll probably get yelled at for saying this (not by you tho) but, in a way, I feel a responsibility to young girls & women that I see are in the situation or may be & I tell them where they can get help. How would we know? Women know. We see it in their eyes & actions. Some women may not be able to find the info or be so isolated that they can't know. There's ALWAYS ways to help. From a slip of paper to asking for help with your baby(even if you don't HAVE a baby) & tell them what they can do. Some will react with confusion, some may feel insulted. But most that I've told give me a simple nod & I've helped them start an independent real life.
From the news I read about UK it still looks to me that UK police will ignore crimes from islamists because they are so afraid of being called racists.

Even Charles Darwin was married to his cousin, just around a century and a half ago and therefore had children with genetical deformations. In some protestant denominations you can easily marry even your first cousin which is totaly absurd considering the seriouse scientific reasons to avoid that.

I was very moved by this talk. It was so confidentially told with empathy, sadness and a sense of purpose. As a Muslim you have my full support and feel that with a people like you things can only get better.
My bf is pakistani muslim, and I am a Muslim myself. We've been in a relationship for one year. These days we've been through hard times.. his parents have set up a marriage for him with someone (arranged marriage). And I told him.. just tell them that u have a gf. Then he told me like he's scared if there's something bad happen to him if he does that. Now I understand and I'm kinda scared too at the same time. I know it's hard but.. thankfully he is not gonna meet her. So we both decided to just focus on studies and be successful. All I can do is just have a hope and keep praying.
I really love him and I hope I can be with him, spend the rest of my life with him

@Safiyyah Umar So you think it’s ok to marry complete strangers or even cousins and then after marriage live miserable life because both are now found to be not compatible. You can’t use religion as an excuse to rush two people to marry when they don’t know or don’t love each other. They should take as much time to know each other before taking the biggest step to there future. It’s one time chance you either end up happy or miserable. And even if couple want to Marry the Muslim families are against it. It’s a world of misery and unhappiness growing up in Muslim families. I’m glad most are rebelling and even leaving Islam.

@@bmotion7648 Hey! I was actually wondering the same and think that over the years I found an answer to this which I just wanted to share with you. I think it's problematic to simply label this as something that the "left" has brought up. The question of why race has a much higher significance in the US than in some other countries also has to do with its history of being a country of immigrants and the fact that in North America there was a system of slavery which lasted for centuries and was grounded on racial difference and racial inferiority/superiority. When I first traveled to the US 2 years ago, I was shocked when an African-American girl (now my girlfriend, luckily) asked me, a white German dude, if I had ever dated somebody outside of my own race - I noticed how strange this question seemed to me and I honestly felt a bit uncomfortable. The reason why I felt this way was that for many Germans, even using or reading about the word race (of which the German equivalent would be "Rasse") can cause confusion or irritation because it is most commonly associated with Nazis and the racial ideology which they propagated in the 1930s and 40s. In American culture, however, race has a very different cultural meaning as it has shaped American society basically throughout the nation's entire history and actually continues to do so in the 21st century (systemic racism as a good example for that). I don't know where you're form, but depending on your cultural context you might get the impression that "race" plays a much larger role for Americans (or you might even think they're somewhat obsessed with this issue). Hope I could share something newsworthy with you :)

Implicit in that proverb is the threat of violence if one does not get his way.
It's the sort of sinister, arrogant and self-serving statement now conveniently only heard, probably, on the streets of Europe. A rallying cry for the sorrowful and self-pitying, who have been given, as they see it, permission to only see the developed world's glass dealt them as half empty. Never as half full.

I do wonder how many "brown men with beards" would even entertain listening to this wonderful and intelligent woman with amazing superpowers. The world would be a much better place if they opened their minds and hearts and listened for once.
You'd be surprised how many Muslim men genuinely want the best for their daughters. They want them happy not beaten down. At least western ones. But the change required within Islam is vast. It means the equivalent of the enlightenment across the whole Muslim world - over 1 billion people, many in poverty and oppression.

I would say the parents are victims too. Nobody did them any favours. But is it a cultural or religious issue? Or both? I would say both. The speaker here seems to be saying that within the European Muslim communities, there is a minority: an unrecognised minority within a recognised minority that is ostracised by the recognised minority. And although she goes on about how much young people are suffering, this relates again to a minority within the minority: I figure from the talk that most young European Muslims see themselves as good enough Muslims in their particular community's eyes. In other words, they also conform. There is nothing essentially wrong with that in and of itself: good Catholics in a village live according to the proprieties of their society.
A leaf, however, must be taken from the page of the Jewish experience of immigration into America in the first half of the 20th century. One hundred years ago, Jews to America embraced music, the stage, drama, film, showbusiness. Already you say this is impossible for a Muslim, any Muslim. Well, take the very first "talkie": about a Jewish cantor (singer in a synagogue) in New York in the 1920s going against his rabbi father's wishes to become a popular singer on stage. That film? The Jazz Singer. It might be fictional but it surely reflected the tension between tradition and society at the time for immigrant Jews in America. Perhaps the Jewish producers of the film intended it to be an advertisement for as well as an invitation to Jewish self-expression in the arts and entertainments. It became a very famous movie, very quickly. And, well, what confidence the Jewish community must have gained from it, in America in the late 1920s!
There was lots of poverty back then. But the heap of opprobrium to be visited on 'wayward' Muslim youth (or youth of Muslim background perhaps) is much greater from their own community in the first half of the 21st century in Europe than it was for Jewish youth from their own in America, in the first half of the 20th century. So is all this really the West's problem? Is the idea of self-expression the superficial difference between a Christian society and a Muslim one? And are there not millions of Muslims outside the West, many trapped in poverty themselves but aware of the world, frustrated by the lack of courage and imagination of people of Muslim background now settled in the West but who steer clear of anything artistic? Lest it compromise somehow their pious appearances? Much, as I've said, can be learned from the experience of Jewish people immigrating to America in the early 1900s.

It has been 2 years since you wrote these words. I am still thinking of you and hoping you are doing well.
When walking through my Dutch village, I always try to smile at everyone I pass by, as most villagers do.
Theres just two kinds of people that don't dare looking me in the eye or don't acknowledge me altogether; Im a small brown(not arab) woman and half-white; It's muslims and white soccer moms with a 'kort pittig kapsel'(the kind of hairdo I fear). One is doing it out of fear for being rejected. The other one is doing it out of rejection. Though it took me a while to see the difference, though both is a form of self preservation; theyre both looking out for themselves and their people, I realized I can't blame either for it.
I have the same superpower Deeyah has, and my resolve is to keep smiling at everyone, indiscriminately, without judging, putting my own feelings of rejection aside(when neither smiles back); I will give an honest and inviting smile to anyone, although neither of those groups will feel invited, at least I tried. In time, my smile will reach some of them. In time, Ill find more ways to reach out to people that don't feel like they can. In time, we will all find a place where we belong.

I find that quite sad..I can't understand why they won't smile even though you say you understand.
I do also find that the muslim women will not look towards my face they appear to purposefully aim to not look at me at all. Something I guess they are trained to do from and early age. I passed 10 or 12 on a several layered stairway, today, as they came down and I went up. Not a flicker of any recognition I was there and moving well aside so they could pass, what with covid, protecting each other and all that; from any of them. The boys stood in the doorway as I came in the building, making it practically impossible to get by. Mothers are supposed to get respect? Not this white almost 60 year old. I held the door a long time waiting for them to come through or let me take a turn to pass. I was a total insignificance. I have a smile for anyone but it is not always looked for and you feel its not wanted. I find it very sad more than anything. I find I want to catch the eye of people who are different to me and smile, we are all human and we have the same basic needs. We need to connect. We all need to treat each other better.
My tear trickled down unknowingly as I listened through this talk. What a fantastic, brave, coherent, inspiring, articulate, compassionate woman! This has definitely broadened my knowledge and understanding of an ethnic group that I barely pay attention to. Thank you. And I hope together all of us can all do out bits to make this world a more humane place to live for all.

I have Asian Muslim parents.
Being raised in Europe, I always felt like I didn’t belong.
My parents forced me to learn Arabic, to read the Quran, to Pray 5 times a day. I HATED IT. They never asked me how school was, how many friends I had, which style of clothes I prefer. They always told me how to dress, how to talk to their friends, how to behave. To never talk to boys.
I grew up WITH THE CONSTANT FEAR that I’ll be sent off to my parents’ country if did something wrong and married off to an uncle.
Now I’m older, and I realise that I was PSYCHOLOGICALLY ABUSED.
This was my life, EVEN LIVING IN EUROPE.

Until the 50s (and even beyond in some families) of XX century, in Portugal, then a very conservative catholic country for a girl to choose a music or theater career was perceived as shameful in many families. Yes, the Arabs were here for 800 years but apparently, and according to a genetic study of Tel Aviv University, "only" 18% of the portuguese population has Arabic genetic markers, being the rest 32% Jewish and 50% European.

A very important video. Reminds me of time trying to help Asian Women in a project in the Midlands (UK). They fell between the desire to keep their parents happy, whilst being honest to themselves and fit into the new culture to which they were attracted. The sad consequences for many of them are reflected in this video.
Spitting in someone's face is just _low._ I can't imagine doing it to anyone. I can't say I'm not an angry person. There are lots of people I can't stand. But I'm not angry enough to spit in someone's face. That's just disgraceful.
During university I had an evening job as an ice hockey referee. Ice hockey has a deserved reputation for violence, it's pretty rough. But spitting on another player is just about the worst offense in the book. It's an automatic match penalty. You can sneak up on another player, swing your stick like an axe to the back of their neck and you'll probably receive a lesser punishment...

@@patriotretiree903 A British-Asian family friend of ours was run over deliberately and almost killed by racists here in England. They were certainly after killing him and ran over his body more than once. I have absolutely no doubt that many more are capable of spitting in a woman's face.
About ten years ago, I watched a Channel 4 news item about racism in Dublin. A British-Asian journalist went undercover working in a chippy. The first time I saw any of this first hand was about 1976. I was working in southern California and staying in an apartment house nearby.
A friend of mine and her friend were sitting in the entrance area talking. The visitor was sad, crying, and I asked her what was wrong, was there anything I could do to help.
She said "no" and told me why she was sad. She had come to the US as a student and decided to pursue law in her studies. She had been told from relatives still living in the middle-East that she could never return home, not even for a visit. The danger was too great, and she would likely be killed if she tried. This was because she had pursued a career in law in America, something that was totally forbidden in her homeland.
I moved soon thereafter and never saw either of them again, but it was so sad that such nonsense and madness prevailed. I hope she was able to find happiness.
She is strong. Her story is inspiring and how she is helping young people is amazing ❤️

I can only imagine what it feels like for you. My parents are borth europeans but from two very different countries and even I feel like I don't belong. My culture is a mix of my parents cultures, just like yours probably is. The Quran isn't just a book of Sharia, it's also a book of History. Those verses talk about some battles in the prophet's life (don't forget that the prophet pbuh was also a military and political leader and with the words of our modern world, a president). So reading any verses of the Quran as it is on the surface and copy pasting it to use as an argument is pretty shallow. Either you search the context of the verse, build your argument and use it or never reply with this verse just like that because your argument is very weak then.

Hopefully things will get better as generations die. I recall working with a young Muslim girl who got married and when she came back to work she was clutching her side. We insisted on looking and she was full of huge bruises. She was very slightly built and we we're horrified, obviously realising what was going on. One of us said she could stay with her, another would take her to the police station but she refused both offers. I left the company shortly afterwards but I often think of what become of her. How can a parent say they love their child or let religion get in the way of allowing that to happen. It's simply unacceptable in the Western World.

I for one, grew up in multicultural environment and have been dealing all my life with the likes of myself, understanding and sympathising with those who have trouble of self realization and continuously fighting their way against the hypocrisy and bigotry of the community they live in. Those who suffer from such treatment within their societies have one out of two choices; either to accept the injustice forced upon them OR leave the place all together and save their lives. i can relate to her a little bit. i have never said the world "i love you" to my parents. weve never had a funny-akward conversation that makes our bond stronger. weve never talks about things we hide from people. i would say my bond to my best friend is closer than my parents bc ive tell my best friend my secrets and theyre not mad about it but im always afraid of my parents would be mad and change the whole mood. i have never want to hate my parents, i love them.. inside but not outside. my parents only told me that they love me and they care for me 24/7 when were on a fight not when we feel the love. and i dont wanna be that type of parent in the future ❤️

Powerful talk. I don't condone discrimination and racism in any communities/countries. Nevertheless, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. When staying in a foreign land, follow the customs of those who live in it. Many muslim families (not all) who decided to live in Europe or N. America for a better living condition, chose to keep their custom/tradition and forced it to their own families. For example: The Shafia Family murders took place on June 30, 2009 in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Shafia sisters, Zainab (19), Sahar (17), and Geeti (13), along with Rona Amir Mohammed, the girls' step mom (50), were found dead inside a car that was discovered underwater in front of the northernmost Kingston Mills. They were killed by their own family just because the sisters loved to act and dressed up just like their classmates/friends. Forcing their belief/traditions to their own family is certainly not right, moreover, forcing their belief/traditions to their neighbour/community where they live in, is totally wrong. For example: please read the story "Landlord found to have violated Muslim tenants' religious rights loses appeal". Tolerance and respect should be both ways, I think.

Really thought-provoking and inspiring talk. You touched on the core issues of an identity crisis and sense of belonging that people yearn for. The issue is parental expectation and lack of consideration from your people to accommodate both sides of the argument, which leads to a lack of communication and distrust between family members. Parents are not happy with their children and the children are not happy with the expectations of the parents. It takes courage to find the middle ground and to discover and live with mutual understanding and respect. Your talk shared very clearly your superpower!!! I agree with all she said in her speech. I'm British and proud to call my Zainab, who was born in Lebanon, an actual best friend. Because she helped me far more when my sister died than anyone I went to school with. She helped me build my courage back and even answered questions I had about her life and culture in Lebanon. What I do not understand tho... if - as parents or just people - your personal view of how to live a good life is so different and contrary to how a certain country/culture does...why would someone go to such a place ?
I would never go to North Korea for instance, because how beautiful or nice the country may be, I absolutely do not wish to live in such a society and way of living that’s normal there. I don’t see how people could go to a very different culture that they do not like, it must be frustrating to see that around you everyday. And it’s also pretty unfair to expect kids that grow up in the middle of such a society, to not behave somewhat like that. Kids take time to find out who they are and they experiment. That’s how they learn. They make mistakes. If they’re not allowed to... it’s too difficult for them. So sad :(
People can focus so much on differences and refuse to understand each other that it creates such division that will result in these things...

Excellent point. But I think you misunderstand the point of Islam, it teaches that there will only be peace if the entire world is Muslim. Convert, die or live as a secondary class of sub human. Those are the choices... that's why they live in countries that are not Muslim. You don't abide by those laws so logically for you, you can't see the point of living in North Korea for example... or any other country that directly defies the culture and morals you grew up in.

This seems to be the nub of the matter. With modern media, technology and Internet you are aware of what North Korea is like, so you can make an INFORMED decision not to go there. The people who left Pakistan, India, Bangladesh after the 2nd World War and the people who left Iraq, Afghanistan after the War on Terror were so busy running AWAY from horror that they never studied what the culture was they were running to. Many use their original language in their homes and they never understand the society the next generation is growing up in. I believe it should be compulsory for refugees and immigrant parents to learn the language and history of wherever they settle and start to make their own family with new traditions encorpoating both the old world view of the parents and the new world view of the next generation. Knowledge and comprehension is power.
