    Having issues getting RUclips to process 4k for this video but I didn't want to delay this any further so hopefully the system sorts itself out!
    Thank you all so much for your patience over the last ten months that it has taken to make the trip and get these videos completed. This is just about the hardest I have worked on... anything, and now that it's finally done I'm very excited to do anything else. The total runtime of this mini series is just over five and a half hours, so anyone who actually watched the whole thing is a real trooper. The idea was always to make watching the series feel like a bit of a marathon, not unlike the trip itself, but it did get a little out of hand there. One more video from the trip is coming, in the form of some leftover extras/outtakes, but this episode is very much the finale of the road trip. Certainly not the last you will see of this car, but the end of one hell of a journey. Thanks for joining us on it!

    This wasn't just a series about driving a car home... This was a story of friendship, determination, perseverance, and the power of the human spirit. I'm sitting here crying as feelings of nostalgia for a time that will never come again. My friends and my family have all grown and scattered like so many leaves in the wind, and I had to say goodbye to my parents last year as cancer and illness took them both before they could reach 60. Those polaroids in the credits - snapshots of the journey you undertook and the people that made it possible - was such a beautiful visual. And the dedication to your parents just hit me and brought it all home. Ugly crying. You should feel so proud of this whole series. No other video has ever hit me in the heart like this. Well done... Well done.

    I'm disabled and can't afford to do stuff like this (it's my dream, tbh). Thank you for letting me live vicariously. I hope this series gives your channel the subscribers and recognition it deserves. The pop-punk/acoustic soundtrack was 10/10.
    As soon as I saw you pull into a Semi shop, I was thinking, "I'll bet they're tempted to throw a semi radiator in it", and 2 seconds later, LOL! I'd look for binding (rubbing parts that shouldn't be/excess friction) in the driveline, as the only time I've had transmissions blow fluid everywhere like that was when they were very overloaded (too heavy a trailer @ 75mph through the mountains of WV in 95 degree heat, not good, lol). Considering all the vibrations (and the generally everything is loose/Jerry-rigged condition of the build) I'd really look at the transmission/converter first. That oil cooler in front of the radiator probably allowed you to run it that hot for that long! Seeing what finally is the overheating culprit will be so satisfying! (for you guys the most, I'm sure)
    I live in Shrewsbury, PA (1st exit off I-83 in PA, 4 miles from MD), so if you want to diagnose it together, I'm down!

    Your road trip sounded so familiar... loved your whole video series. Mine started in Fresno California and ended in Queens NY with a 72 Datsun 210 2 door (paid $200 for). Somewhat the same type of issues involving bailing wire or speaker wire, ball point pen casings, duck tape, truck stops (for showers), a cooler full of lunch meats and such, and what seemed like hundreds of gallons of water along a southern route on I-10 till around the pan handle then up the east coast to ny. The only company I had was an old Midland cell phone, a map of the United States and my full sized collie (like Lassie). Was definitely a adventure... After around 1 year and 6-8 months in NY, alot of work, customizing, a guy came knocking on my door asking if the car was mine ( he said he tried several houses around the area) and offered me $7000 (yes he did) and a Mazda RX7 in trade. He desperately wanted the car. Hated to see the car go but she tured out to be a very reliable car and was catching alot of attention ( some unwanted by NYPD). 15 yrs later I now have 2 E150 vans (both has same paint scheme as the A-team van (one in black and one in white and both custom built by me) and a 48 Studebaker pickup. Fun times...

    Congratulations on getting it home! As an old Hot Rodder, let me throw my two cents in on what issues I see with the car. The first one is that the parking brake cables should go over the leaf springs, not under. The second is with the cooling system. At highway speeds, the fan does nothing in terms of cooling. It is only there for low speed traffic. Overheating at highway speeds points to too low of a capacity in the radiator. It needs a wider radiator, if at all possible. Maybe try one for a V8 Mustang II? As for the initial timing, I think what happened is that the inertia ring on the harmonic balancer has spun on the hub due to age, thus throwing off the timing mark. I would do a static time of the engine to confirm that the timing mark lines up at TDC with the engine off. I believe that the engine also has too long a water pump snout, which is why the crank pulley and alternator pulley are spacered out to meet it. So, it should be possible to move the radiator back once you figure out the accessory drive issue.

    • @randallkasholo2026
      @randallkasholo2026 2 года назад +12

      I said from the start this radiator was to small and not Big enough and everyone shot me down. Never seen a v8 with a skinny rad like that one.

    • @computercrack
      @computercrack 2 года назад +1

      @@randallkasholo2026 well it's not like they were pushing the engine to the limit? I remember from the earlier vids they were just cruisin around basically and the car would overheat badly and would only cool down when basically idling on the side of the road. When cruisin around you only need like 30 horsepower, that shouldn't be an issue even with a radiator that is too small

    • @MegaDirtyberty
      @MegaDirtyberty 2 года назад

      Agreed.

    • @3rdworldgarage450
      @3rdworldgarage450 2 года назад +1

      @@computercrack It's not about the horsepower so much as it is about the load and engine speed. Hold your engine at 2750 RPM for half an hour in the driveway and it will get warm because you don't have the capacity to cool it under those circumstances. (plus, you would not have the airflow through the engine bay to evacuate the heat from the headers, etc.) This is also why cars overheat during a flat tappet cam break in. Remember too that headers add more thermal load than cast manifolds because they have a thin wall and allow more heat to escape in the engine bay. With cast manifolds, the heat is carried down stream to the exhaust pipes.

    • @computercrack
      @computercrack 2 года назад +1

      @@3rdworldgarage450 yea exactly its about the load of the engine. Just checked, my car is doing like 2400rpm @70mph but I was pushing the gas pedal only like 10-20% down so really light load in any case of course it's a modern engine with computer controlled injection (car did like 50mpg today but mostly only driving 50mph or less) so I don't know about carburetors maybe the Pinto is dumping the same amount of fuel into the engine no matter the load (or the position of the throttle). Maybe he finds what's wrong, we`ll see

    What an absolutely awesome adventure to watch, and feel part of. Great comradely, and something that has created lifelong memories for numerous people. I had a smaller adventure like this in 2004 when I bought a car interstate. 5.6L Holden V8, in a 1987 Commodore. Trip home was “only” 1100km (approx 660 miles) and I got no more than 80km of run time between failures. Some we’re only 5km apart. It even failed dramatically just before half way and I was ready to walk away, but I persisted with it. I know all too well the feeling of dread when something breaks and you’re in the middle of nowhere. Coming up with temporary fixes, or having to wait until daylight for shops to open to buy something to adapt. Never sat below the red end of the temp gauge the whole way, and I went through all the same cooling system issues. At one point it was using 2L of engine oil every 100km. Not burning it. Rustproofing the underside, thanks to an old leaky rear main. It was a week of hell and haphazard emotions. I restored that car in 2010 and it’s been ultra reliable and has run cool ever since. Many times on that trip I questioned why I didn’t just pay for it to be transported home, but I now look back on that adventure as a positive thing, and a great learning experience - physically and mentally. Your adventure was 5x what I went through. That relief of making it home can’t be described. It took months before I wanted to work on that car again.

    I watched all 4 videos from Arizona to the end, twice. Wonderful! Thank you for bringing us along Mike! The most memorable adventures are always the ones where so many things went wrong but you still made it. For the rest of your life, every time you remember this trip, it will bring a smile on your face (Sean and Rob too). I know because it brings a smile to mine.

    The ending with the the photos flipping across the screen almost bought a tears to my eyes. 😭
    absolute trip of a lifetime! Cant wait to see whats in store for the pinto!

    Wow, just fucking wow. It is not often I comment on RUclips, but this video, and especially the ending is an absolute emotional masterpiece. I am glad to have been able to witness this journey as it might just be the closest I will ever get to making a dream of mine come true. A dream to fly out from Poland to the States, buy an old heap of American iron and roadtrip it across the entire nation. It might never happen, but this series was a great taste of what it could be. Thank you for taking the time and effort to share this adventure with all of us around the world. Sounds cheesy, I know, but I feel like I've been underneath that Pinto with you and got some dirt in my eyes now.
    Now...
    Where big block?

    So I finally had some time to sit down and watch this (mostly) uninterrupted and I've gotta say, what an excellent job. Mike, I hope you know all your hard work (both the physical repair kind and the mind-numbing editing kind) are greatly appreciated. You are an EXCELLENT video editor. I'm not talking about deadlines of course, but hey you did beat the 1 year mark! Seriously, you know how to tell an excellent story with plenty of detail and lots of heart. Beautiful job.

    The amount of work you put into this series is ridiculously mind numbing. I'm not sure that everyone will appreciate the hundreds of hours it had to have taken to edit this all together (I would have guessed a couple of thousand hours), but I do. 👍

    For like three years I had been watching you restore that 91 firebird and simultaneously watching Ronald’s fiero restoration and I cannot believe that you two random people who live so far apart happen to work together on this and the fact you’re literally a spitting image of him, seriously you’re like twins

    You have no idea of the memories that this video brought back to me... I drove my 1972 Pinto from Fort Bragg, NC, and shipped it to Okinawa, while I was stationed there, and brought it back to Fort Carson, Colorado after my deployment there... what an odyssey... thanks for the memories.
