Sparks are flying between our new working Border Collie June and our farm cat Luna👀

- We’ve heard of herding cats but this is next level😂. June our new 6 month old working border collie has a very high driver herding instinct and apparently that extends to herding cats. Our farm cat, Luna Cat is known for running our livestock guardian dogs, training puppies and being a master of dogs. This is a battle of wills we must carefully manage. Getting a new dog at this age takes time. You need to form a bond with the dog and get them to learn to work with you before you can really start managing the situation and training in a successful manner so for now we mostly controlling access while we tire June out with her bestie Pete and socialize her with the livestock guardian dogs. Boy are we busy! We will be posting as much of this long process as we can here😅. We also will be putting June in training soon which is exciting.

You can tell by Luna cat's vertical tail that she approached June in friendship; June just has to learn to respect the ranch manager or get swatted.

She did headbutt June which is usually a greeting for a friend. June just didn't respond the way Luna wanted*yet*.
Definitely. The fact that the cat has effectively educated several puppies, she’s figure out that this is a young dog, still in reality, a puppy, who needs a bit of education. It was so funny, watching her being followed by George and he was clearly wanting to chew her tail face was rich case of you to my tail and I will batter you and I don’t care how big you are the way her ears were going side to side.
I do think it’s healthy that dogs are raised with cats because it teaches some self control . Luna is a great cat and I can see why she’s so valuable to the farm, especially with her tolerance and ability to train young dogs to be careful with their teeth and show her respect.
The bottom line is you’ve got a young dog who still a puppy with a very strong herding instinct. And it’s just a case of education and learning self control. She’s a gorgeous dog . Here in the UK. You see quite a lot of working border collies and she’s a lovely example of the breed.

Doesn't matter the size of the cat, they all behave like 3000 lb tigers.
Cats know what they're doing for sure. They are good at teaching boundaries.
They teach their own boundaries, but they're not so great at respecting other's boundaries. Such are cats.
Luna instinctively knows what she's doing. It's important for her to quickly set the ground rules w/June in place without losing face with all the other animals on the farm. June isn't stupid even though she's still young, so she's also going to see the way the LGD's and Pete listen to and trust Luna.

Luna always had her tail straight up, even if it was a little bit flippy. She feels happy and comfortable but is always ready to defend her position.

June's one ear up and one down is just precious
Our cat was 50% Siamese, 100% crazy and had absolute boundaries. When she and our cattle dog got their ground rules figured out, they were best friends for life. They played together, groomed each other and slept together.

Probably the first time I've seen a cat approach a dog so confidently and calmly only to have the dog feeling invaded. It's usually the other way around.
June has some intense drive! She's in herding mode 100% of the time. My cattle dog/border collie mix is like that around anything that moves. It's exhausting and can be extremely annoying for the other animals. We've had to work with her alot, and still do, on an "off switch". Teaching her to be calm/relax around our cats and chickens, even if they are moving. And training a strong "leave-it" is a literal life saver. Good luck with this spunky girl! Take a deep breath!
I'm glad I happened upon this channel. Most humans would interfere with this process but you safety encourage it for the animals growth and harmony. How refreshing.
Truly admire your attitude letting the animals figure this out. Too many people are quick to interfere, and conjure human feelings on these animals. You seem great at reading animal body language.

One of my favorite animal behaviors is when animals come really close and put their face up to a cat so that the cat can punch it. I do this myself sometimes. It's so much fun, and the cats enjoy it too obviously.
I love how Luna goes at her own pace for training, you want it to go slower, but Luna wants to set ground rules fast!
She reminds me of my old cat Walter. Did he work on a farm? No. Did he train every animal he came in contact with to respect him as boss? Yes.
there was a cat at my grandpa's farm. there were no dogs, but she could strike fear in tom cats twice her size with a look. I have no doubt she put a few coyotes in there place. she lived to be twelve. quite old for a barn cat. did she work? she was the top ratter there, so yes

My Anatolian learned early that he can play with the kittens/young cats, but if he gets too rough my older cat will put him in his place. She's been through 5 dogs now and knows how to manage them. The Rotties learned quickly that yes, she is the Boss cat and what she says is the law of the land. Love both Anatolians and Rotts they learn quickly. Not too sure if I'd get an older herding dog with her though. at 12 yrs. she does not take guff from anyone... LOL
Gotta love Queen Luna!! She expects and demands loyalty no matter who you are or how new you are to the farm.. the scene with Judge following her is too precious😊.. Judge is her first, last, and only line of defense she needs.. But Lily and Bo are always nearby as well to protect The Queen..

Luna is unafraid. She is amazing. She has to set boundaries or June may hurt her (not on purpose I'm sure).
I was cracking up when Luna was on the tractor just smacking the shit out of everyone. She was funny with June....rolling around and walking right up to her 🤣🤣🤣❤❤ i just LOVE LUNA❤❤she lets everyone know she may be small but she is mighty

June will learn. Luna now has Judge "CREATING DUGOUTS " for her to perform " Necessary Kitty Surveillance " on the Farm. From her Dugouts she is able to Surveil areas without being as visible to HAWKS and other Birds if Prey. Judge enjoys providing the dugout holes for Luna. I am wondering if Luna as a Feline animal of Prey herself, has better vision at Nught for the Surveillance. She has the "SLIT" Corneas to regulate minimal light conditions. Course, I could be wrong.

Beautiful social dynamics going on on your farm. Everyone has got their own place.
Luna is a torti, torti and calico cats (99% always female) don't take crap from anything or anyone. You should still work on "leave it" with that border collie. Excitement can turn into prey drive quickly and be disastrous for Luna, especially if the pack is present. Just some friendly advice as I've seen it often over the years.
The Anatolians won't let anything happen to Luna. And lily knows how to correct without overdoing it.
You don't know what is going on especially with Luna she's not a ordinary cat she's the boss and they know it the other dogs would never let anyone hurt her if you don't believe me go ahead and try doing something to Luna in front of the pack and you will be carried by six and she won't be judged by twelve.
There's a difference between not taking any crap and always needing to feel like the boss.

I don't intend to rain on your parade...I really like your channel and videos. You mentioned that Luna is older...maybe you should have her train a kitten to accompany her in her old age and help her when she gets even older. Luna is a very special part of your operation. I don't know how it happened but she is special and so are your dogs. I really have enjoyed watching the kids run about. They are so cute and mischievous.
