Morgan - Something to be aware of as my uncle had a farm with many cats on it. In the winter time especially when you drive in with your car, the engine is warm so the cats would want to crawl up next to it. The problem develops that when you go in to start it, it cause them to jump and if they jump the wrong way they go right into the fan which is no good. He got into the habit of when he approached his car he would smack the hood to make a loud sound to get any cats out. Just somethig to think about as you move into winter.

Having been around barn cats I think Mollie's behaviour to Gini kitty is one of two things. One, she is forcing her to not rely on Mom to be there to protect her. Two It can take months and months for the hormones to be out of her system after being spayed, she may think she is in heat and ready to have more kittens, so she is pushing her away for that reason ( baby kitten protection mode)

Yup to both of those. I've witnessed more mama-adult kitten encounters in my life than I can count and the mother enacts a separation or barrier between herself and her spawn as they become older, especially if they are the same sex. It's difficult for us to understand, but due to their primal nature, this is a protection mechanism of the "pride". They may become friends down the road, but this is a transition time right now for them both.

    • @himarei
      @himarei 3 года назад +37

Yes, it is normal behaviour that I have seen in city cats also. Sometime it is much more violent. In the "wild", the teenage cat can be pushed to go find another clowder (group of cats). Since Molly doesn't seem to be very aggressive, Gini does not reciprocate and they have a big territory, it should not be a problem. My guess is that Molly will calm down during winter.

Dogs are pretty amazing at empathising with others, be it people, cattle or even fowl. Especially herding dogs and livestock guardian dogs. They recognise universal signs of fear/tension and from them know how far can they go without spooking the animal. Although that doesn't work well with cats, as their communication protocols are wildly different and a lot of misunderstandings happen before the two learn each other's ways.

Female cats are more likely to catch and not eat their prey: It's an instinctive; they have to catch prey for kittens. Boys might also start bringing what they catch to a kitten living near them (or their favorite human or a dog (or a horse!)). The act of giving food is very important to cats: That's why they always hang around and ask for food, even if they don't eat it. Giving food is the easiest way to prove to a cat that you care.
Also, (most?) mother cats start to harass their kittens after they reach a certain age: Mother's instinct is to get ready for new kittens. They don't have time to do that if the old ones aren't independent, so they start to harass them to make them start catching prey and look for a territory of their own.
Molly is looking at Ginny and sees Ginny is ready to live on her own. It may take some time before Molly realizes she isn't getting new kittens, and doesn't need to drive away Ginny.
I adore Pablo, and feel sorry for him not being allowed to share food with Toby. But in a year, Pablo is entering senior age, and it slows his metabolism. He is going to need senior food that spares his kidneys.❤

Fun fact: Even they kill rodents like mice and eat them it is often not enough for them to stay healthy. So it is important to feed outdoor and barn cats too. Don't forget that this cats are still domestic cats. It is hard for a cat to only live from what they catch so I'm really glad that people still feed them even they could catch something to eat. I read somewhere that a cat who gets feed by the owner even hunts more because they have more energy to do that. Hunting takes a lot of energy and a lot of hunting is no success. So a cat with more energy has more to spent on hunting because it is not a way to only survive.

You should get a float value for your 50-gallon tank. It's practically essential for the hydration of cattle. All it does is fill a tank until it reached a certain height, so it will ensure your cattle will always have water.

Cats are more crepuscular than nocturnal. Dawn and dusk are the times when they're most active, because that is when their prey is most active. The mother/daughter relationship in cats is complicated. Cats are all about territory and the mama cat's job is to rear up her young to go on to their own territory and get out of hers. Still, cats most often live in relative harmony, as yours do, in small colonies. They are not nearly as solitary as once believed and form tight bonds within their groups, and with the humans in their lives. It would probably reduce tension to feed each cat out of its own bowl instead of the double bowls. Thanks for treating your cats so well. I really enjoyed the footage from Ginny's day. I found you via Roots and Refuge and have subscribed. ~ Lisa

I think one of the reasons why Molly is being mean to Ginny
    Is one- she smells different
You get weird smells from the vet after surgery
And two, a mom animal (dogs do this too) basically tell their child that I don't feed you anymore, you're on your own
I'm not going to be nice mommy anymore
    But those are my thoughts
But definitely get another cat bowl
Feeding in the same bowl will cause fights instead of separate
Since Molly wants her own food
Plus Gonny is just wanting to take all the cat food as quickly as she can before anyone else can have it

Say what you will about outdoor cats, they are a godsend if you are rural even if you aren't farming/ranching. Living in a very rural part of southwest Florida I had a bad time with rattlesnakes because of the abundance of palm rats swarming about. I gained a sweet little calico and her three sons, a ginger and two tabby Tom's. Within a month of them going outside they had made a huge difference and the only trace of a rattlesnake that I rarely see is the rare shed I come across.
I can no longer let the cats out to do what they do best. The soft skulls thought it would be ever so eco-friendly and just plain swell to reestablish the panther to Florida and after several cats were eaten ALL my cats (those that are still undigested) are full time indoor cats who spend their days gazing sadly out the windows. Another win for Florida in their attempt to take home Gold at the Derp Olympics....I think they have it sewn up.

For what it's worth, mother cats don't keep their motherly feelings for their young once they're adults, so she won't be motherly with Ginny again. Also, female cats are generally quite defiant of other cats and get quite territorial, more so than fixed males in my experience. This also makes them more anxious and threatened if other cats get too close... I think they need each their own bowl to eat like Pablo has, at the very least.

So proud to see Ginny's first kill ☠ ! Someone's probably mentioned this, but Molly's hostility after Ginny's vet stay is normal. It will probably work itself out. Also be aware, mama cats often don't stay lovey dovey with their female offspring once they become teenagers. Just a sad fact of cat life. I'm glad Ginny's found a friend in Pablo though. He's such a sweet soul 🧡
As for the cattle, I think you're onto a winner with the "blue bucket" approach! Having their treats down by the poultry area may help create a positive association with the birds. The fact they're coming down to the lower pasture when the birds are asleep is a very good sign!
