Dude the small disc was under the larger disc when you took it apart

Oh man, nice catch! Yes, it was on video. It wasn't when I took it apart initially...and the recording was corrupted. So I had to re-record and do it over. When setup the "staged" disassembly I put it on backwards. I didn't notice it either until after I was done editing...after I'd already had it reinstalled on the car.
Getting some BTS view into the "magic" of RUclips creation, eh?

@@rhynosgarage Did you have to take it back apart and put the small ring on top.

You can tell it’s not original because the original cap and rotor were brown. If the sensor is Mitsubishi, it will have a small raised logo. Also, you have a Optispark 1 and you bought an Optispark 2 cap. That tube on the cap doesn’t go to vacuum. It connects to the intake. The OS 2 has a vacuum port on the housing. Pretty sure that won’t work correctly.

@@rhynosgarageit’s supposed to be underneath. You are going to wear out the reluctor wheel if you leave it like that.

Thanks for the video. Let us know how you make out!! my 96 trans am the opti just went , i have a oil leak behind the opti so i’m sure it thrashed it and oil got inside. i’m parking it and will do electric water pump and new opti… i read if you open an opti up like you did, lock tite every bolt, and rtv it, the chances of it failing are greatly reduced !!! an electric water pump also helps because it eliminates the weep hole on the mechanical ones that drips right onto the opti!

    • @rhynosgarage
      @rhynosgarage  Год назад +3

In my case I had no visible evidence of water/coolant in the opti. Just a lot of oil. Getting it all re-assembled to hopefully try to start over the upcoming long weekend. Stay tuned!

Mine just had green corrosion on the pick up & the cap has 1 burnt spark node.

Mine lasted 13 years. I have an ac delco one & as I’m going to work to replace her… she took a dump. What are the odds 🤷🏻‍♂️
    Good job & thanks.
( I think you need an inverted e4 socket to take her apart )

Pretty sure this one was either rebuilt before or replaced. No idea how long it was in there, but hopefully this one lasts a few years at least.

When you first took it apart the smaller rotary disc was underneath and when you reasembled you placed it on top. That will effect where the larger discs inside the pick up sits in relation to height.
Also you didnt seal the rotor cover so rubbish can still be drawn in.
Id seal all surfaces that mate together

yeah, just an recording snafu. The part on video was a re-film from footage that got messed up and I didn't recreate the video quite right. Nice catch though!

I like your video. It was really good. Only criticism that I have is I think you put the optic sensor plate and that other plate in reverse order from way you took it out.

Mine had oil too 900 dollar MSD only ran two years looked very well made with timing adjustment screw but failed putting in cardone unit see if it’s ok

It’s really just a terrible design altogether.

Keep us posted bro how the cardone unit holds up. Too many iffy sellers selling optis and not enough reviews on them.

It did and ran pretty good actually. It’s got no brakes yet so still gotta finish that up. Hopefully over the coming Christmas season.

I don't think these Optisparks will ever be truly demystified, but nice of you to say. One of the worst designs ever.

I can't stand them damn things. Went through three of them its the most ridiculous distributor GM ever came up with . It's the reason my firebird has been off the road the past 8 years. 😢

My Petris opti is throwing a code 36 after only 6000 miles. Out of warranty of course since I barely drive my 92 Vette. Installation was done correctly so I guess mine is an outlier.

@usaf20071989 this is literally the only bad experience I've heard!!! Sorry to hear that!! Everyone I've talked to with one has had great luck with them!! One guy I talked to said he went through 3 optis in as many months then put in the petris and it's been running perfectly for over 4 years now!! I'm hoping I have the same luck with mine!! Now you got me worried! Lol do you have factory replacement coil or aftermarket performance style?
