Agreed. I've shot canon for 10 years and I'm honestly pretty annoyed with their intentional crippling of models. I'll be revisiting my gear in a couple of years, but may well switch to Sony if canon doesn't change their business practices.
@@karikaru Same here. Currently own a C70 and R5. It is very clear the C70 could have been even better, just as good, or better as the C300mkii. And the R5 as well considering the models that came out quickly after had improvements that for sure could have been on the r5 as well. Meanwhile, when Sony released the Fx6, owners of the fx9 argued since the fx6 was better. And Sony simply said it was more modern with newer technology. I respect that. Plus, gives users the option to upgrade to a smaller camera that is even better than their bigger older model.
The best thing about Sony cameras are that they are not selective which tech is available at what price. It didn't take long before Sony introduced their amazing Eye AF tech to ALL of their later cameras after their debut with a single model. Their latest models are simply improvements over the older ones.
This time it seems this way and this camera looks awesome. But I still think they do the exact opposite with some of their other products, many of which I have owned. Let's just be grateful this time.
Bravo! Those voiceovers during the editing are a great way to entertain while reducing the time you would use to shoot everything again... keep this format Tony it works very well!
I'm very impressed by sony's offer here with the new lenses and FX30 body. They are definitly going after M4/3 users with a well built and well priced camera and compact lenses that are very practical (unlike what panasonic did with its huge and expensive 1.7 zooms). The GH6 still has some tricks up its sleeve, but the sales will take a big hit for sure ! ps : for people filming themself, the GH6 has a focus limiter fonction that is very quick to setup and makes it perfect (good tracking, no hunting to the background)

This is a terrible review. I took the FX30 out last night. I can tell you that the autofocus is spot on. I only used street lamps, and window lighting, never once did it lose autofocus. I cranked the ISO in a few cases to 8000, (just for testing) and on my 4k Benq monitor, the noise was more than acceptable. I went to ten spots, and my friend (test subject) walked around, spun around, walked 25ft away and the FX30 performed wonderfully. The images I got out of the camera were fantastic. I own a pair of a6400 units, and the FX30 is a major upgrade. Also, I had Canon FF 5Div, in terms of video, the FX30 is miles ahead. I believe, most full frame people are pissed. For $1800 you are essentially getting the same image as the FX3 or the A7sIII. Sure those are better in low light, but where are these people shooting? In an open field. For any APSC users looking to upgrade, the FX30 is a great upgrade.
I really like Tony's self awareness. Definitely the best part of this whole video 😂 I've used an iPhone to film a few weddings on a gimbal and it's worked fine. Honestly, they're good enough.

Good to know that the iPhone is the go-to camera (esp with a Gimbal) but if / when more is needed the ZV-E10, (Nikon Z30 - esp if better & affordable zoom lenses arrive) and FX30 are seem to be good next steps.
Love this video!!! Best amongst camera content creators, the video was not too technical and featured detailed comparisons with other cameras. Well-Paced, Entertaining, and interesting! Thumbs up!!!
Really hoping to see your Iphone 14 Pro camera review, because no other youtubers have given a satisfactory technical review on the camera yet! They only compared the resolution but not talking about lens sharpness, high iso, equivalent aperture, dynamic range, etc.
I have never had an Apple product in my life but d I clearly saw the comparison where the iphone saturates colors, distorts contour, and deforms face. In other words... apple is trying too hard to be likeable to lay people but not professional photographers who can discern what a good image should look like.
WOW the footage shot with the iPhone really looked weird. Is it just me or did anyone else think that? I lost track of which shot was done with which camera for the whole time the shot was on screen. Would have loved the camera name to be on the shots it was taken with. I know there was a side by side eventually but for the other shots a bit of text at the bottom would have been nice for me. As usual, an excellent review. You are a reviewer who really calls it as you see it. I count on that. Everything I need and nothing that I don't. Thanks for that.
This is probably the best review I’ve seen on the fx30. You hit the nail on the head when you said “4k60 is for covering up mistakes” I love that slow-mo. That’s why I always shoot in 4k60, but my projects are always 4k30. The reason I want to upgrade from my ZVE10 to the FX30 for my b-cam needs. Currently using the FX3 as my main camera but I hate shooting in 1080/60 with the ZVE10, and I also hate gimbals. I didn’t know someone else felt the same way I do about 4k60.. lol.
I want to get a 4K 120 capable camera for wildlife - especially birds in flight. I want the 1.5x crop so the A7Siii is not ideal. I shoot handheld so I'm not sure I could ever be as smooth with a small screen as I could be with an EVF. If the A7R5 has 4K 120 I would probably go for that. However, with this model Sony has all the technology they need to create an a7000, or some such model, with 4K up to 120, bird eye autofocus, and an excellent viewfinder. That would be an answer to the Canon r7 - especially if they put 4K 120 into it, which is something the r7 cannot do. Humorous video :-)
If you have enough money the FX3 with a good lens is the ideal choice. Otherwise is better to buy the half prides FX30 with a very good lens than the FX3 with a mediocre lens. At the end the very good lens will be usable at least a decade while the camera will be propably changed after five years.
As well as generally lighter. I could use the low light capabilities of a full frame camera, but would I like to carry those lenses around all day along with food and backpacking gear? Heck no!
This is so cool. I can't believe Sony was able to create this camera at this price point. I'll be saying so long to my Canon R7 and it's lack of rf-s lenses. It looks like my a6600 and a6400 will have a new teammate. Thanks for the info Tony!
Would like to see this up against an a7iii… considering this option as the a7siii is just too expensive for me and with USD being inflated internationally, might be a good alternative considering its 4k120p and 10bit
I have to say that I believe you have found your next occupation as a comedian if/when all the social media/photography income sources implode. Great Information and laughably entertaining. Great job and thanks for sharing.
Well, I ordered one at 10PM yesterday. I do interviews and my favorite lens is a Fujinon MK (15-55) that is Super 35 so I think it will be a 'perfect' match.
I'd go FX30 for its features. I'm pushing to make corporate videos, short films and mini docs as well as RUclips and livestreaming. The FX30 is a brilliant all-rounder when it comes to all these. Definitely has its limitations but most are easy to overcome. Currently running on the o.g bmpcc. Thinking bout trading it in for an FX30.
I could definitely see this camera being used as a 'B' camera for FX3/7SIII owners, or even as a 'Vacation/Travel Vlog' camera; I have the A1 but a lot of times don't want to take it out; this FX30 would be an ideal video camera to use with my FE 20mm f/1.8 G (30mm FF equiv) for videos
Great review. Very tempting. I use a C300 mkiii, but I use an A6300 for all my gimbal shots. I love the a6300, it's been a really great camera, but the FX30 is seriously tempting, especially with the 10bit colour and the amazing autofocus.

Thank you, this was a really practical introductory overview. Your comment that you would use the GH6 for ‘everything’ if it had better autofocus. What does the GH6 have that the FX30 doesn’t in terms of your practical workflow and other needs?
CaNT STAND THE VERTICAL FORMAT! I have all SHORTS blocked, they don't even show up on any of my feeds. Will NEVER use TicToc, and I don't even watch RUclips videos that are shot vertically that are not SHORTS. That being said, I Love your content keep it coming ! 😀
Viltrox AF 13mm f/1.4 XF APS-C lens is what most people us with the Nikon Z30 for blogging, they have a good line of APS-C lenses for the Nikon Z mount.
Have a pair of A7iv’s need a 3rd static angle for some weddings and don’t want/need to spring for another a7iv. So glad they are coming out with something at this price point!
I refuse to compromise artistic integrity by shooting vertical video in the same way that I refuse to compromise artistic integrity by over-processing my photos. I'll hold that artistic line against the dumbing down of the craft.
@@TonyAndChelsea Because it affects the framing of the shot and visual representation to the audience, and anything that affects framing and what the audience sees is part of the artistry of photography, film, classical art, etc. That's why a lot of people say horizontal shots look better than vertical shots, and some say vertical looks better than horizontal. Or a lot of people say that horizontal shots allow you to capture more of what's important in the shot, and some say otherwise.
Thanks for the review, the FX30 lol to be a real contender for my next camera. I think vertical format is a fad that will disappear like platform shoes and polyester suits.
Wow, this is the first time I've watched a video of yours with the humorous edits/voiceovers. I just wanted to give a bit of feedback for that. 1. Self deprecating humor: Love a humble approach backed by a lot of knowledge and experience. 2. Inspirational targeting of millennials (I assume - haven't done the research myself) Also, thanks for the great side by side useful review.
APS-C is inferior to full frame, but Super-35 for video is great, so the FX-30 is great! ;-) I think it's more of a great second camera for an FX-3 owner than anything.
You always create good content. Not buying the 60fps for covering mistakes though. You can still slow down a shot at 24fps. Why sacrifice the whole video for a 3 second shot to look better?? Just my 2 cents, but again nice video.
z30 is fine for me, decent performance at very affordable price. nikon apsc is also good in low light due to a bigger sensor compared to Canon aspsC. Nikon z30 can be bought at around $700.
I think you should have added a cinema camera that is currently being used in professional media production to your comparison, the Blackmagic series of Pocket Cinema cameras, since Sony is marketing this as a cinema camera.
This sounds sweet! I’ve been on the fence to ditch my Canon 5D IV & 80D for something newer with real 4k. I shoot my daughter’s club soccer games and I do a motorcycle YT channel. You had me cracking up when you were making fun of your self in this!! PS: Keep making podcasts too!
It still needs: 1) Shutter Angle 2) Internal Prores and/or partially debayered RAW 3) Proper HDMI info display (the rear LCD needs to stay active) and no windowing on the external monitor.
Cute idea adding the extra "blah blah blah" (boring details) to the video so you can use it both as B roll and as a self-deprecating humor gag! There were a couple of times in the video when I lost track of which camera you were using and had to rewind until I found the captions. 2 thumbs up!
13:06 Active (digital crop) stabilization looks great especially in the corners - no weird distracting warping - impressive since many wide-angle lenses create warping in the corners even when image stabilization is turned off.
Sony is the most innovative camera company. Their platforms are so well thought out and consistent. As you mentioned, the only place they fall over is talking with mobile.
Nice video. First of all - it is nice to FINALLY have a camera that has vertical mounting. Why it took them so long to ad one screw-hole when vertical content is a huge things for years…?Why is it not a standard on all cameras already…Secondly iPhone footage is awesome for a phone. The overprocessing sucks but the daylight footage is pretty darn good for social sites use. The sony looks good but I still rather get some full frame that is also capable of good photography….
I thought about the comparison and came to a conclusion: the pocket is gonna give you more image quality and flexibility but.. they have different purposes. I feel like the fx3 is more of a "youtuber" camera than a cinema camera. Yes, it can be a cinema camera, but the inclusion of IBIS, flip screen etc, tells me it is aimed at RUclipsrs and vloggers. It can also be a great option for travel videos and documentary I guess. Basically, they're different cameras.
So, I’m thinking of this FX30… I’d be getting it to record sermons and lessons for my church. Seems like a good option. Currently I use the ZVe-10. I’m considering this FX-30 for my upgrade… or should I get the FX3 ?
Holy cow, T&C actually mentioned "XH2s" out loud in one of their videos since the camera's release! Lol I would like to hear more about that, please! This was a great video, but the XH2s was so anticipated by the whole community, including this channel, and it remains popular. Why has this channel not done any sort of review, or even a remotely substantial comparison between it and cameras with similar prices/specs? One of my very favorite photography channels will barely mention one of my favorite cameras--one which happens to be both an extremely tempting option while being met with very mixed impressions by the community--and it's driving me nuts in a special way. T&C, please help. Thanks, Potential Fuji Fanboi
Tony, is there a reason why all manufactor place the plugs on the left where they block the screen and the card slots on the right side? I think the card slot on the left side and all plugs on the right side would be much better in handling.
As far as I can tell it just dates back to the early digital stills cameras... Japanese camera manufacturers tend to just copy each other and never rethink things.
Most people are right-handed which is where camera grips are placed and the majority of control dials are utilized. Unless one uses a stand-off handle mounted to a cage while hand-held shooting video, connecters coming off that side are a breakage/disconnect hazard.

Can't wait to get mine. I love how you can use luts in cam
This was such a good head up match & the 3rd person narration cracked me up🤣😂🤣
I'm enjoying these new scene transitions in your recent videos.
Make a video A7C VS FX30. Please
Tony I appreciate the voice overs on this video that trolls the trolls. 😂
Came for a review of a camera I'm never going to buy - stayed for Tonys self awareness!!
That voiceover commentary was funny, Tony. You should keep doing it in the future if it's not too much trouble. 😄
Have a pair of A7iv’s need a 3rd static angle for some weddings and don’t want/need to spring for another a7iv. So glad they are coming out with something at this price point!
Aspiring filmmaker leaning towards the FX30. Looks like this is it. No need to overthink it, just get it and make content. It will last for years.
I refuse to compromise artistic integrity by shooting vertical video in the same way that I refuse to compromise artistic integrity by over-processing my photos. I'll hold that artistic line against the dumbing down of the craft.
How is the orientation part of the artistry?
It won’t be a fad as long as we have vertically-oriented phones 😅
@@daniels9877 Do you have vertically oriented eyes?
@@daniels9877 Phones still work when you orient them horizontally! 😁🤣
@@daniels9877Because it is sooooo difficult to turn the phone to landscape.
@@krishnastock iPhones don't have landscape orientation for their OS.
Wow, this is the first time I've watched a video of yours with the humorous edits/voiceovers. I just wanted to give a bit of feedback for that.
1. Self deprecating humor: Love a humble approach backed by a lot of knowledge and experience.
2. Inspirational targeting of millennials (I assume - haven't done the research myself)
Also, thanks for the great side by side useful review.
Excellent coverage of the camera Tony!
Great comparison!! Is there going to be a video about iPhone’s 14 pro RAW files??
Yeah working on it now.
@@TonyAndChelsea thank you sir!
Awesome review. Please consider comparing amount of rolling shutter as well.
z30 is fine for me, decent performance at very affordable price. nikon apsc is also good in low light due to a bigger sensor compared to Canon aspsC. Nikon z30 can be bought at around $700.
I think you should have added a cinema camera that is currently being used in professional media production to your comparison, the Blackmagic series of Pocket Cinema cameras, since Sony is marketing this as a cinema camera.
Tony bullying himself in the voiceover is the best part of the review 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Haha 😂enjoyed the interjects, great review Tony
Glad you enjoyed it
This sounds sweet! I’ve been on the fence to ditch my Canon 5D IV & 80D for something newer with real 4k. I shoot my daughter’s club soccer games and I do a motorcycle YT channel. You had me cracking up when you were making fun of your self in this!! PS: Keep making podcasts too!
It still needs:
1) Shutter Angle
2) Internal Prores and/or partially debayered RAW
3) Proper HDMI info display (the rear LCD needs to stay active) and no windowing on the external monitor.
Cute idea adding the extra "blah blah blah" (boring details) to the video so you can use it both as B roll and as a self-deprecating humor gag! There were a couple of times in the video when I lost track of which camera you were using and had to rewind until I found the captions. 2 thumbs up!
“This is the fx30 informercial” fixed the beginning for you 😂😂😂
13:06 Active (digital crop) stabilization looks great especially in the corners - no weird distracting warping - impressive since many wide-angle lenses create warping in the corners even when image stabilization is turned off.
Fantastic!!!
I love the voice over talk getting bored about the stuff you said in the video.
soooo funny.
LOVED iT... GREAT VIDEO Tony. Really enjoyed.
Sony is the most innovative camera company. Their platforms are so well thought out and consistent. As you mentioned, the only place they fall over is talking with mobile.
Great review, thanks! I would love to see a comparison between the FX30 vs. XPERIA 1 IV.
Can we see this compared to the new Fuji releases since this is an APS-C in a future vid?
Lovely stuff - agree on the iPhone skin tones, it's ridiculous! Just rules it out completely. Will you be doing a review?
Yeah definitely
I want it! I actually would use it as a cinema camera. Budget lenses make it a monster and all those color options from Log to cinema.
It would be interesting to see a comparison with the blackmagic pocket 6k
Well the BM raw is i think way better than the slog
I thought about the comparison and came to a conclusion: the pocket is gonna give you more image quality and flexibility but.. they have different purposes. I feel like the fx3 is more of a "youtuber" camera than a cinema camera. Yes, it can be a cinema camera, but the inclusion of IBIS, flip screen etc, tells me it is aimed at RUclipsrs and vloggers. It can also be a great option for travel videos and documentary I guess. Basically, they're different cameras.
I said fx3 but I meant fx30
This is the first video of yours that I watched all the way through and wasn’t mad at you.
Thanks?
@@TonyAndChelsea LOL I love your videos!
"There's not really a direct competitor to this..." umm, the $1,995 Blackmagic Pocket 6K G2? Other than that, thanks for the great review.
So, I’m thinking of this FX30… I’d be getting it to record sermons and lessons for my church. Seems like a good option. Currently I use the ZVe-10. I’m considering this FX-30 for my upgrade… or should I get the FX3 ?
Nice desk setup as well as review 💯🔋🔋🔋
Thanks,
Potential Fuji Fanboi
Yeah, just give them some time to do that!
@@filippov123 They've had time! XH2s came out way before FX30. The time is now lol
This video was super super helpful! Thank you
Tony, is there a reason why all manufactor place the plugs on the left where they block the screen and the card slots on the right side?
I think the card slot on the left side and all plugs on the right side would be much better in handling.
As far as I can tell it just dates back to the early digital stills cameras... Japanese camera manufacturers tend to just copy each other and never rethink things.
Most people are right-handed which is where camera grips are placed and the majority of control dials are utilized. Unless one uses a stand-off handle mounted to a cage while hand-held shooting video, connecters coming off that side are a breakage/disconnect hazard.
the nikon roast is real 🤣🤣🤣🤣 more of this sarcastic side please!
I like your self-aware commentary. Great work. Also informative. The first iPhone review that could really show me why a dedicated camera does have a real advantage.
Tony, You always do a great job. Thank You. SONY has a hit w the FX30! I use a GH5s on a Tilta rig with a B4 LONG lens ( w adapter ) and the Pan. (made by SONY) 2ch Hot shoe Mixer like the FX30 and a Pan.10mm WIDE when on the Ronin S. I prefer cinematic, not really a vertical vlogger, but do have a new Sam22 android for all that.
How do you find your GH5s in today's new cameras? Video quality in comparison with Canon R7 for example
@@renovatndacayisaba8131 The relative value of a GH5s or any camera depends on what you're using it for, stills or motion pictures, where motion blur isn't necessarily your enemy.
